Sounds a whole lot more realistic than "Ukraine is gonna win. Russia Bad. West Good. NATO is just fine, we got this."
The whole world is on the cusp of a MASSIVE change. Our collective leadership hasn't made a single good decision on anything crucial in 25 years. Probably 30.

If you also consider the fact that Erdogan was in talks with Putin and Zelensky in Ankara working on a deal, then its probably right that Russia was trying to force Ukraine to honor the Minsk Accords as stressed by Putin in Munich the week prior. If Russia wanted to take over, that 40 mile convoy would have walked in guns blazing, and the FAB bombs we see today would have levelled Kyiv. His point of view is reasonable given the following:
      1. The government likes to classify everyone as a terrorist, adding scepticism whenever that word is used.
      2. There are many more evil regimes around the world that don't get that title applied.
      3. He never said Hamas was good, but since they are also an elected government, it puts them in similar categories like China and Iran.
I like how open he is about all the faults with the CIA, our near-sightedness, how intelligence is different from facts, and how uncertain the future is. I disagree vehemently that America's interests == maintaining our superpower status and remaining the #1 economy. Those weren't even remote possibilities or considerations when our country was founded. We became great from following those principles, but now we want to remain great by sabotaging our competition. The CIA has lost its way.

He definitely has no understanding of Israeli - Palestinian conflict, but is very opinionated. I would probably agree with his assessment of the general US foreign policy today. The US only does what is convenient for the US and any alliance with the US today is not worth much because it can be unilaterally broken by the US at any point because we lack consensus in the country and our politicians are tearing us apart. Just look at our recent track record with Afghanistan, Kurds, Ukraine, Israel. We need to get our $#it together before we completely loose all respect and all friends around the world. The war in Gaza has just begun. Israel created a terrain guerrilla armies thrive in snd the IDF has proven itself to be an undisciplined, babaric group with no focus.
Bombing unarmed civilians shows weakness not strength. Hamas will exploit that weakness if the IDF tries to militarily occupy Gaza. They'll meet the same fate the West has met in all their asymmetrical wars, defeat.

Once again Francis asks the best, most logical questions. This guest makes Hamas out to be non-extremist because they were overwhelmingly democratically elected, but Israel is the supposed theocracy...what a distortion. Also the West's unrelenting perspective that everything is economic - which is the reason the West will never understand the Middle East. People here actually live their ideologies. People willing to die for their ideology don't support a country just because their bread comes from there.

    Three comments:
    1. In 1918, briefly, the Ukrainian people proclaimed their own country. The border of this Ukraine did not include Crimea.
    2. In WWII, one in 300 Americans was killed. For the Soviet Union this figure was one in seven. And at that time the Soviet Union was a significantly larger country than the United States.
Russian paranoia of an invasion from the West does not come out of nowhere.
    3. Putin asked to join NATO, but was refused. Operations against Serbia and Afghanistan were done under the auspices of NATO (not exactly the defensive operations one envisions when one thinks of the purpose of NATO). Against this background, if you were the leader of Russia, wouldn't you be concerned of having NATO-member Ukraine on your border?

A super-confident person who is half-off is a very dangerous person. His over-confidence gives the impression that he knows what he's talking about, when he doesn't. Ukraine COULD HAVE pushed out Russia had the west been FASTER and more GENEROUS with advanced high tech arms. But the west dillydallied around, allowing it to become not a blitzkrieg victory but a war of attrition loss. The US spent a trillion dollars each fighting the relatively minor countries Afghanistan and Iraq. Correction: Islam AND Judaism. The underlying issue has always been, for more than 2000 years, religion.

@@BBshark000well Israel was always willing to compromise with the Arabs. Palestinians then and today have no interest in that. Judaism isn’t the problem. I mean the extreme orthodox in Israel are a problem, but they aren’t the reason there’s no two state solution

Here I thought Israel was an Authoritarian regime, but thanks to the CIA, I now know that if you have an Authoritarian regime on one side of a conflict, then the other side is good and represents freedom! Thanks, CIA! For not backing dictatorships for expediency and making sure that the world isnt Authoritarian and based upon financial security rather than human rights.

I'm agreeing with all you guys in the comments. The guy never bashes the CIA, was married to a CIA agent (still) and yeah, he comes across as giving reality doses, but its like reverse psi-ops sort of speak he does. Its meant to get you to worry by telling you the exact opposite of what your comfort zones are resting on.

The guy sounded ok until he started with the “Hamas are legitimate because people voted for them” moral equivalence. Not read much history then?

you are missing the point, he is not telling you what is right or wrong, moral or immoral, this is just the reality. ppl did vote for them and if you want to resolve the problem you can't just ignore that, because you are bound to make more mistakes and get even more ppl killed. You don't like them, don't approve of them, you think they are terrorists, well tough break, you have to negotiate with them.

I have never seen anyone as obsessed with his hair as Andrew Bustamante’s! This obsession borders with psychopathology! Poor guy! It is not an accident, I guess, for this guy to have been fired by the CIA!
