  • This is why it's very important to pay special attention to emergency vehicles ahead.
    On July 13, 2021, a crash between a Lincoln SUV and a Mount Pleasant Police Department squad car sent both drivers to the hospital in Mount Pleasant, WI. The officer was sitting in the squad car, entering information into the vehicle’s computer when he was suddenly rear-ended by a Lincoln, driven by a 55-year-old woman.
    Both the officer and the woman were sent to the hospital sustaining minor injuries. However, there was significant damage to both vehicles.

      My only question is why didn't they pull further over off the road? It looks like he was taking up one entire lane in the roadway. Not blaming the officer but it seems like it would've been smarter to get off the road a bit more. The driver seems like an older woman who probably doesn't have the best eyesight. Depth perception is hard for some people at dusk.

    My son is a state trooper. When he became a cop I expressed how worried I was that he could be shot on duty. He assured me that, statistically, the chance of getting shot is extremely low. “Don’t worry Ma” he said, “ I’m way more likely to get hit and killed while on a traffic stop.” Thanks for putting my mind at ease, son.

      I know, right? It's where the term "walking wounded" comes from. The injured officer was not totally aware of his injuries and moving around may make things worse and he wouldn't know it until the adrenaline wears off. I came upon a scene of an accident many years ago, and it was pretty bad. One of the drivers that were involved was walking around unaware of his injury. Yeah, he was definitely in shock. I got hit by a car while running. I immediately got up and started running again because all I was thinking was if I keep running that means I'm not paralyzed. Seemed to make sense at the time, because I was in shock. Right after he got hit, he kept doing his job, but common sense was off. He overreacted by pulling his gun. Then, even though he was hurt, he kept moving around here and there, almost pointlessly. Anyone whoever's been in shock would recognize his actions. Hard to explain.

      One of the problems is, people tend to fixate on an object, like a police car on the side of the road. And, that results in them aiming TOWARDS that object without even realizing it. In dancing, you are taught when pivoting, to LOOK at where you want to go. Your body will naturally move in that direction. When there is something you do NOT want to hit, keep your eyes moving and do not fixate on it. Of course, it also helps if you are actually driving, rather than doing fifteen others things. And sorry women, you cannot multi-task. All that results in is doing multiple things poorly.

      It said she was trying to merge when she hit him. I take that to mean she didn't want to be slowed down (or miscalculated how much room she had) and slammed the car before she realized her mistake. No one wants to brake and wait for an opening when they get caught in an occupied lane like that. I personally believe she saw an opening and accelerated to get into it but ran out of space to do so. A little common sense and a little more patience could have avoided this entire incident.

      I was also wonderinf why the squad car looks unmarked. Unmarked police cars cant make traffic stops and people do not have to stop for them, even if they have red and blue flashing lights. It is a safety thing. Cops have to be in clearly marked cars and motorcycles so citizens know they are being pulled over by a real cop. And regular car with no decals with flashing red and blue lights is not legally enough. And though it happens, and cops get away with it (mainly because it is never challenged), but off duty cops cant make traffic stops. Even detectives cant make traffic stops. You actually have to be a patrol officers. Or whatever its called. Highway patrol and/or the cops that spend their days driving around in MARKED cars and motorcycles.

    If you can't see those bright flashing red and blue lights, then you have zero business operating a vehicle on a public roadway -- period. Move over/slow down laws are in effect in almost every single state in the country. You're supposed to slow down and give a wide berth to emergency vehicles. There needs to be far stiffer penalties levied against these stupid, inattentive drivers. As an avid motorcyclist, it's especially infuriating to see incidents like this one, because unlike the lucky police officer in this video, we are not protected by a 4,000 pound steel cage. All it takes is one careless driver to end your life.

    For those wondering why he drew his gun:
    My guess is that, due to the fact most are able to clearly see bright flashing lights at night, the assumption was that the crash was malicious and that they wanted to injure the officer. For this reason, he drew his gun while advancing on the vehicle to get the driver out. You never know what you might find yourself in, and do to both the speed and nature of the crash, he most likely drew his gun out of safety *just in case* the driver was malicious with the crash. Hind sight is 20/20, and we know that the crash wasn't malicious, but while on scene you never know.

    • @ErosEchos
      @ErosEchos 3 роки тому +62

      Malicious? Who is going to wreck their own vehicle or put themselves in that type of danger just because they don't like cops? It was just his adrenaline. At that point he wasn't thinking clearly and needed to sit down if he didn't have enough sense to see if the other people were okay.

    • @abbyvonzorro2782
      @abbyvonzorro2782 3 роки тому +110

      @@ErosEchos People do that. Sometimes they don't care about their own safety. People have intentionally struck officers or their vehicles on the side of the road even if it means injuring themselves. So yes, in my *opinion*, he was justified in pulling his gun. However, your point does have backing to it, as after he said he didn't really know what was going on. But, again, hind sight is 20/20, so we can critique people then. It's a lot different when you're on scene.

      He was not in the right state of mind it’s dark they weren’t completely clear off the road, makes more sense to see it being a accident then it being malicious. He was in the middle of a traffic stop it wasn’t like he was staking anyone out or given anyone a reason to target him. The excuse of just because he was hit is bs. If that’s your point then hell no one should even be able to drive by a traffic stop. He could have been concussed drawing a weapon immediately in that state is not safe. If he wasn’t going to check on her safety then he should have remained ether covered behind his car or not have approached the car at all if he really thought someone was trying to be malicious
