    The Ram ball visible on the handlebar clamp is not an official Triumph accessory. Other than that, the bike is 100% stock at the time of filming.

      @@jamescourt4703 Thanks! MSRP is $12,700 USD for the non-black colors. I paid about $10K brand new ($11,400 out the door, after tax and dealer bullshit). That was a great deal at the time, but I'm seeing more and more Speed Twins listed in the low $10K range these days.

    Tips for lubing your chain. 1) Save your old socks (or the ones that lost their mate in the dryer). 2) get a box of nitrile gloves. 3) General rule to keep in mind: lube your chain after a ride, when the chain is warm. The dirt and grime will have an easier time coming off the chain, and the lube will set up better while it sits overnight instead of being flung off your chain, and all over your bike, if you spray and ride immediately after. 4) Put on a nitrile glove, grab a sock (may it rest in peace), cup your hand around the chain and then spray into the little pocket you create. You'll limit overspray this way and get more lube on your chain. Wet the whole chain first, then just grip the chain with your hand and wipe it down, removing excess lube and the dirt and grime you just loosened up (Ahhhh memories of your teenage years). 5) repeat with a new sock, or turn the dirty sock inside out and repeat if your chain is an embarrassing knackered shameful mess. 6) when your done, hold the rag in your gloved hand, pull off your glove over it, and then throw out the disgusting mass (do not light it on fire and throw at your cat. Unless your cat is a right bastard, and your not inside your garage. And no one is watching. I hate that cat.) 6) go have a beer and bask in the glow of your now clean chain (and possible burning feline), unsullied rear wheel, and clean hands.
    If you get in the habit of doing it after every ride (within reason, don't be a nut) you'll be rewarded with a clean chain that not only looks good, but will last longer as well. Bonus material: You'll also get a sense of how your chain tension is, and wont suddenly discover you have some floppy bits dangling between your legs in an embarrassing fashion. Nobody likes that. We'll maybe the cat.

    Correction: Contrary to what you stated in the video, almost no Japanese street motorcycles require valve adjustments at 6,000 miles, and literally none require a valve adjustment at the initial 600-mile service. The 600-mile service is usually nothing more than an oil change and re-torqueing of the bolts. The average valve-adjustment interval is 16K (most Hondas), 26.6K (most Yamahas), and 15K for most Kawasakis and Suzukis.
    That one error aside, this was a very well done, informative video. Beautiful bike, too. Congrats!

      24,000 miles for my MT-07. Picking up the Speed Twin soon when the dealership's DMV processor is back up and running. Been waiting for 3 days for them to fix it. Hopefully soon!

    I do have a beam toggle switch on my Twin (European). Plus that push button that does the same. Can't get used to those bar-end mirrors. My old bike had like an inch long static bar ends and I used to fixate my little finger on that to keep a constant throttle. With this many potholes and road cracks we have in Hungary, whenever I go over one and the bike bumps, the throttle bumps with it as well.

    I sat on one the other day along with the T120 and liked the T120 a lot better. The speed Twin's foot peg position is right in the way of your legs at a stop. I have a short inseam of about 28" and the foot pegs would hit right at my shins. Notice a 4:16 when the foot peg is digging in the riders calf. The T120 felt a little lower to the ground and the foot peg was perfect for me. The bars on the T120 is a little higher and felt perfect for my short arms. I'll be getting a T120 before getting the Speed Twin because of my stature. The T120 even felt lighter to me.

      The T120 has the advantage in ergonomics, especially for your stature. Performance wise, it'll do 90% of what the Speed Twin will in the hands of most real-world riders. Plus it's better equipped. I still prefer the Speed Twin because it's the 👌perfect amount of sportiness for me, and I'm fortunate enough to find it comfortable.

    The headlight flash / passing light is used for several signals in Europe (which depends on the country in you are in) and so its position is very useful. Incidentally, the toggle also functions as the high beam, simply flick it forward with your finger and the beam remains on. Much easier to access than with your thumb.

    3:39 The Speed Twin is not Euro 5 compliant - Triumph updated the T100, T120, Street Twin, Speedmaster and Bobber in February, the Street Scrambler and 1200 Scramblers in April, and is finally updating the Speed Twin next month to conform to the regulations.

    Nice video!
    The additional key turn to the left (past the fork lock) also lights the headlamp with a soft LED glow, not just the tail lights.

    I wish I had seen this before I bought mine in February! Locking my handlebars was always a fiddly business, and I had my fuel cap on back to front.. and those seat loops. The valve adjustment interval is simply spectacular isn't it (private gloating when I meet a Moto Guzzi owner). So this should be REQUIRED viewing for my local dealership when handing over the keys on pickup day. Great video sir!

    Hey there, Thanks for the video and thoughts mate.. well structured and not boring at all. Something that worked great for me to from TEC bikeparts is the engine protector mounted below the CAT, in black its barely visible but still offers that extra protection. Here in Europe we need to comply with the number plate to be placed passing the wheel base so sad we need to see an ugly long piece of black plastic hanging out, in the other hand, the tail lights are neater and better suited in my views than the american version. I have also added the throttle spacer ,from ( ducatispacers.com), this basic mod made a huge difference on the response and control at low speeds.

    Hi Van - really good one , one small detail you might have missed - is an USB slot, at least in Europeans versions. Pretty handy thing if you plan to charge your mobile nor plug in an external GPS devise ( why would you actually ???) Cheers, Greg

    The best review I have seen so far. Can you please tell me if foot peg position good for long ridings? how long have you ridden before it becomes tiring.

      I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam, and I've ridden it 350 miles in a day without getting sore. The pegs are slightly crouched, so a tall person might feel cramped, but not me. My butt starts to hurt long before any other part of me does.

    The momentary toggle switch on the headlight is a passing light. In Europe, on faster motorways, you'd us it to let someone know you were coming up on them so they'll move over to let faster traffic pass. In the states, where everyone has generally forgotten how to drive, it's generally used as a remote control to the slower driver's middle finger.

      The Speed Twin does not have heated grips, but they are available from Triumph as an accessory. The Bonneville T120 does have heated grips though.

    Wondering what you do for gps to navigate, is the under seat use adequate, where do you run the wires, and if you do use your phone, what ancour mount do you recommend for the speed twin?.... oh and hello from your Aussie viewers 🙂

      I actually don't use GPS navigation very often. I prefer to try to memorize the route ahead of time. If I do use GPS, I just keep my phone in my pocket and let it read me directions through my Cardo. Everybody seems to love QuadLock mounts these days, but I personally don't trust any motorcycle cell phone mount. Today's phone cameras are just too sensitive to vibration.     I've been debating between this and the Thruxton R. I like everything about the Speed Twin except the suspension. I'll most likely get the Speed Twin. If Triumph ever decided to make a Speed Twin R with the Thruxton suspension, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

      I have no doubt that a Speed Twin R is in the works, but I am content with the standard suspension on my Speed Twin. Granted, I am 155lb and my riding is spirited but not aggressive.

      I lust after the Thruxton R unfortunately its extremely uncomfortable and kills my wrist after 30mins. I'm quite happy with the Speed Twin and can cruise on it!

      @@ponderguy7724 that's what I felt after my test drive. I absolutely loved it but could not see myself taking long trips with it. The Speed Twin looks like it is more comfortable but I need a stronger suspension. Only time will tell if they release such a Speed Twin.

      It definitely has the right brakes and tires for the track, and enough power, but I suspect that a skilled rider would notice the limitations of the suspension pretty quickly

    Is it possible to lower the bike for a 30" inseam rider to have both feet flat on the ground? BTW, Very good video! Thumbs up all the way!

      Thanks! I think you'd have to look into lowering links; the seat itself is pretty thin so I don't think there's any height to be lost there. My inseam is 30" and I can actually flat foot it if I really cram up against the tank. I also weigh 160lb, so if you're heavier the bike may sag low enough for you to get your heels down.

      My Buck Rogers throttle body covers have pit RUSTING. I wonder how hard it is to convert these to the bobber's.

    I'm not a beginner rider, but don't need a big or heavy bike. Maybe ride 130 mi at most but rarely. Interested in the Triple 660...how does this Twin compare? I like both but wut's the diff between 1200cc vs 660 cc?

      Totally different personalities I'm sure. I'd expect that the 660 triple wants you to rev it out a lot more, as opposed to the 1200 twin which has enough torque that you can ride it lazily if you want to.

      If I'd had the money for a Speed Twin at that time (which I didn't), then I would absolutely have picked it over the Street Twin. It fixes all of the shortcomings of the Street Twin--no top end power, poor brakes, no 6th gear, no tach, ugly side decal--without increasing the weight at all. It just comes down to whether or not you think those improvements are worth an extra $3,000 USD.

    Great video and i would love this or a bobber black for my next bike. But what you said about japanese bikes clearance service is not all that true. Most Japanese bikes(Example: kawasaki parallels and Yamaha CP engines) have a 40,000km ish valve clearance service. I just bought a ninja 650 mostly for the price i got it for but also because of its 42,000km major service intervalls :) Not like my old scramblers measly 12,000km major service intervalls that cost 900£....

      Yeah, I should have done my research on that point. My 2013 CB500X, 2005 CBR600RR, and 2012 TU250X all asked for valve checks at the 1,000km and 12,000km marks, so I thought that was normal. I'm just glad Triumph's engines are more reliable than they used to be.

I almost bought a cb500x once. Was not aware it had that bad intervalls. Almost as bad as my scrambler 😅 But definetly subscribed and I like your content, so im looking forward for more 😊

    Value for money is the new model 2019 on , worth the extra when buying used ? Thinking exhaust and suspension specifically?

      What are you comparing it to? 2019 was the first year of the Speed Twin 1200; older than that, your options for street-focused upright Triumph liquid-cooled twins are the Street Twin and Bonnevilles T100 and T120. You'll find the suspension and exhaust note of those models to be virtually indistinguishable from the Speed Twin 1200. If you don't need a big top-end rush and want the best value per dollar in a current-generation Triumph modern classic, look for an early Street Twin (aka Speed Twin 900) which have been popping up for $6K USD in my area lately. If you want to be wowed every time you wind out a gear, up that budget to $8500 and get an early Speed Twin 1200. An early T120 is also great and might fall in between those two in both performance and price.

      Oh if price is in any way a concern then absolutely go with the older one. The differences are not worth thousands. Hundreds, maybe, but not thousands.

      It's no Goldwing, but very useable. The bike certainly has enough torque for it.

    Do you know about any Speed Twin Gear Box issues?
    I was going to purchase a T120 but they seem to have a lot of Gear Box problems.

      I've only heard two things about that: one was that some Speed Twins were subject to a recall due to failing shift linkage, but my bike's VIN wasn't on the list. The other was a guy who rode his T120 20,000 miles in one year and the transmission broke; Triumph's solution to that one is to change your oil every 5K miles instead of everything 10K like the manual says.
      I don't feel worried about it, but then again, I did pay for the extended warranty....

      VanBlamm Yes would make sense just to sell one type,I have a 2019 Street Twin and I’m very happy with it.I’ve fitted a front fender extender to keep road crap out of the radiator and will be fitting a sump guard to protect and hide the cat.

      Hmm, not that I'm aware of aside from a lowering link. The seat is very thin as is. Maybe try some Daytona GTX boots with the really thick sole?

    Great video brother.
    I'm ditching my XE1200 for a Speed Twin when all this lock down is over! Think I made the wrong choice when buying, I loved my test ride on the ST and need to do track days again. Will you decat it? I'd put some 2 hand stock thruxton pipes on too and ditch the black ones.

      Hi, thanks for watching! The more I ride it, the more sure I am that I'll eventually decat it. I'll most likely do the all-in-one kit Raisch that includes a PCV with the correct tune already loaded onto it. The stock pipes certainly aren't for everyone, but I'm happy with them for now. If you do move to a Speed Twin and decide to track it, you're probably going to want to upgrade the suspension.

      @@VanBlamm hi, yes I'll de cat and swap out the suspension with thruxton R shocks and Tec bike parts front fork up grades. I've got it all planned ha ha. Might do a gold yellow style tank but keep the black stripes. We shall see. Good luck with yours

      I haven't done much beyond oil changes, but I don't think they have any notoriously tricky jobs (think Desmo...)

    As a speed twin owner with 15k miles, I thought you need to come to a complete stop to change ride modes and had no idea about those loops under the seat!

    Most Japanese motorcycles don't require valve adjustment on the 600mile mark.
    Other than that, excellent!

      I based that on the fact that my former CB500X, CBR600RR, and TU250X all called for valve inspections at the 600 mile mark in their owner's manuals. Clearly I should have researched that point a bit. Thanks for watching!

      I believe it's the same(or 12.000km) on a cb500.

      It did for the first few hundred miles, but the noise faded away over time. My old Street Twin did the same thing.

      I'm pretty sure they added a regular high beam on/off switch to the US-spec models. No other updates that I'm aware of.

      You're not wrong. I'm light and I don't ride very aggressively, but even I am thinking about doing the TEC fork upgrade.

      ​@@VanBlamm Last october I was buying my first bike, and mainly I was choosing between Triumph Speed Twin and Kawasaki Z900RS/Cafe. Even though I liked Speed Twin look slightly better in the end I bought Z900RS Cafe. Kawasaki has adjustable suspension, bigger tank, windscreen, has comparable build quality and finish, and it's noticibly cheaper. I know after some time I would want to try and put the windscreen on the Triumph, which would probably spoil the look. And the suspension upgrade would set the price difference even higher. Now after 2000 km I can say that I really want to raise handlebars a bit, and to put nice sidebags. Other than that I'm in love in my bike, almost every time I ride people show thumbs up and asking about it, all of them dudes though :D

      The bike certainly has enough torque for it! It's not the biggest pillion seat in the world, but it's much more comfortable than any sportbike. Just make sure you crank up the rear shock preload.

      Worried that it won't be enough? The Speed Twin is very fast, but compared to anything with that 900 triple motor, it's not as eager to wheelie, and has just a little bit less at the top end. The Speed Twin does make more torque than the XSR900, but it also weighs ~40 pounds more.

    This question is in general for the entire triumph bonneville range (t100/200, street/speed twin). Do you think these can be the bikes to tour cross country and particularly, in areas when there is almost no roads like the Himalaya’s. I guess I am awestruck with the classical & cafe racer looks but, the trips I want to accomplish are beyond tarmac and into wild. tough to find an all-rounder.

    I don't know who told you Japanese bikes need the first valve adjustment after 600 miles, but that's not true. 600 miles for almost all motorcycles is the first break in service, no valve adjustment needed.

      I wish I had researched that point a bit more first. I was basing it on the three Japanese motorcycles I've owned (two Hondas, one Suzuki), all of which called for valve inspections at the 600-mile and 8,000-mile mark, according to the owner's manuals. I shouldn't have generalized based on a sample size of three though.

      @@VanBlamm Lots of great info in this vid, and happy to hear the valve intervals are so long on the Speed Twin, but I'd put them at the top end of average with most bikes requiring between 16-24kmi between valve checks. Some are lower, like air-cooled Ducatis and KTM 690s, but they're the exception these days.

      It's pretty much the same motor. In the Speed Twin (and Thruxton) it's badged as the 1200HP and makes 96 horsepower and 82 ft-lb torque. In the T120 and others it's badged as the 1200HT and makes 80 horsepower and 77 ft-lb torque.

    incorrect most Japanese bikes valve inspection is at 15k-18k and most owners skip even doing that since almost all usually are in spec.Example I had VFR800 and never checked and never skipped a beat.

    The bike is in need of a new name. The Triumph Squeal Twin. A lot of owners(myself included) have a loud and annoying squeal from the front brakes. Triumph admits there is a problem and as yet, they do not have a permanent fix. Their words, not mine. Buyer beware. It’s really annoying.

      I have experienced this too. A lot of folks say it goes away over time, and mine largely has, but I still get the squeal when braking below like seven mph. Doesn't ruin the bike, but it's very stupid that Triumph can't or won't figure out a solution.

      Triumph definitely cheaped out on the suspension, although I've been living with it just fine. The Brembo front brake is fantastic, but unfortunately it's mated to a shoddy off-brand rotor that's prone to seizing if the bobbins get even a little bit dirty.

      @@VanBlamm push the bike slightly or get two up on it, you will see the brakes are so limited with the front suspension . Almost wish triumph did a proper version like a throxton rs better brakes and better suspension. very nice bike otherwise.

      Kawasaki z900rs takes care of both problems without sacrificing great retro look. It also has a much easier access to gas tank, although I use premium and get around 46 mpg.

    Hate your videos. They make me want that bike soooo much. Have a Tracer 9 GT right now which is perfect, but does not have a soul…..that is really the only thing wrong with it. Will probably get the Triumph anyway.
