It’s a basic law of physics that air can only hold a certain amount of water vapor depending on the temperature. This is why relative humidity doesn’t mean anything unless you are comparing the same temperatures. The measurement that one can feel is dew point. Most humans begin to feel uncomfortable with a dew point higher than 60ºF. People vary, but for me it’s 60º. This is one of the best of the mini-split air conditioner designs. From what I have read this is excellent equipment and perfect for installation in houses not originally designed with central air conditioning as it doesn’t require any ductwork where much efficiency is lost in supply and return ducts in unconditioned attic and basement spaces. If dehumidification is inadequate and one is uncomfortable below 72º a separate dehumidification system should be used. Any house that does not feel comfortable at 72º has an over sized HVAC system that does not run long enough. If it is not running 24/7 on the hottest day of the year it is oversized and a re-heat system should be installed to add more heat load to keep it running for 45 minutes per cycle on.

A dry room feels colder because your sweat evaporates faster and that cools you down more. Instead of the a/c cooling you, you're cooling yourself! I think it works by cooling down the pipes inside the wall unit like normal but blowing a lot less air over the fins so that it doesn't cool the room significantly and the air has time to lose its moisture before passing through. It would have been nice to measure what was coming out of the condense pipe while running the experiment. I think the Chinese lady in my local take away did the translation for my Panasonic's installation manual so this is just a guess.

if you live in an area that is humid, especially if it's a seaside area where temperatures are much more regular and even, dry mode can feel almost as good as "air con", but energy consumption can be drastically less.

As far as I have learned, such a machine can not suck much water out of the room. It can keep the level flat if you breathe hard. If you shower, cook or have multiple people in the room, it's probably struggling a bit with reducing the humidity.
If the room temperature is already as low as you want it to and the humidity is too high, you should use the dry mode. :) If the temperature is higher than you want it to be, then it probably doesn't matter whether you use dry mode or cool. In case you expect the temperature to get lower than you want it to, or you are not at home and just want to keep your home free from mold/ humid air, put it in dry.
Only if it's certain that you need the cooling, put it in cool. Typically, cool or auto mode cools better than dry mode.

I think it would work in my house because the highest it gets in my house is 75 to 76 when its 90+ outside, if i ran hot the temperature wouldnt be so bad but ive started to put my non ductless whole house system at 74 because i get too hot when i sleep. Cant invest in a mini split right now but i know my mother has said that when cooling you have to keep it at a warmer temperature so the system doesn't ice up, i wonder if putting in dry would limit the ice buildup.

Just runs the internal blowers much slower to allow it to absorb more moisture from the air. At least this is what my Lennox units do which I believe are Pioneers. Edit: You want the humidity inside to between 35-50%. Above 50% and you can get mold issues, etc. Too low and well wood, leather, some other items can warp, crack, etc. Dry air feels cooler as your skin can evaporate moisture faster which allows your body to cool better.

So if it's at 55% it's better than 63 but it's still too high. Seems like that's where it leveled off in this video. Shame they don't suck more moisture out of the air than that. I have an actual dehumidifier running in my basement that i have to empty every day. I also have a heat pump down there that i usually don't run because it's always cooler downstairs but the humidity is high. I just found out about dry mode and i'm trying to figure out how it works.

Just to inject that the average relative humidity threshold I've seen is 65% for mold. I've never seen such a low threshold as 50% mentioned, before today. It is going to depend on temperature and mold species, but in any event, I wouldn't be concerned at RH levels of 63% and lower.

I live in Bahrain, a tiny island in the Persian Gulf. We get temperatures as high as 55C. I simply let some hot humid air into the office and once I feel it's equal to the temperature outside, I switch on the dry mode and lower the temperature down to 28C. And within a few minutes, I can feel the office space turn really cool and comfortable. Since I have an inverter, I don't have to turn the AC off, I just open the door and let some hot and humid air in once in a while and it works beautifully. I just have to clear the tub for the drainage pipe outside at the end of the day (gets filled to the brim with water).

@@cristobal.palmero4919 Basically, an AC unit's compressor functions to cool the copper rods in order for the air that passes through them to cool. Cool mode usually balances between air force (the fan strength or intensity) and the compressor's cooling temperature (how much it should cool the copper rods). This balance is great for normal humidity environments because 1) the compressor does not have to work so hard, and 2) Cooling hot air generates condensation, which can clog the drainage pipes after prolonged use at lower temps. When you switch to dry mode, the AC blows with less air force but keeps the compressor functioning at lower temperatures. The high humidity in the room will evaporate and take care of cooling the room down without needing too much air force. I don't know if it makes a big difference in the electricity bill though

  • @RedspawnSilver

Absolutely disagree with the energy use. I have an energy monitor on my main panel, and there is a drastic difference in energy use between AC mode and dry mode, by a factor of 4. It’s truly amazing, almost just like running it on fan only mode.

I have a Mitsubishi FS series 15k in my garage. Dry mode brings the humidity down from 70s to 44% and feels cooler. I’m waiting on a replacement because right out of the box the main board went bad and was replaced then the compressor won’t go into high mode. So all it does is run slow and steady.

    • @J-Mart

Thanks for the info, the comments are very informative .. I live on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Summers here, or at least July - October are hot .. 88-95*F High humidity.. I have a Mirage XLife ELF261H ..
I'm going to give the Dry mode a try. I have been running that unit in Cool set to 29c to 31c (32c is the highest you can set the a/c) as if I set it lower it feels too cold to me. If I set it around 30 or so it will cycle the compressor on and off to maintain that temp. .. I figure maybe the temp sensor is simply off or something..) Usually low fan speed.
When I set it to Dry it automatically went to 25*c on the unit and remote and went to low fan. I am able to adjust the temp, not the fan speed.. The manual says when you set the unit to Dry it will automatically sense the room temp and adjust the temp setting accordingly. SO maybe that 25*c is the real room temp.. which does sound more realistic imo.
I'll let it run on dry for a few days to see how it works

I left mine on dehumidify while I was out of town. Yes, they filled the buckets outside with water, but the humidity inside went up drastically.
My bucket dehumidifier absolutely takes the humidity down, but it struggles around 50%. This is the south eastern United States almost a sub tropical rainforest, but I really do not want to get mold.
Also, the dehumidifier setting all these mini splits seem to produce less water than when they are on regular air conditioning setting, I put watering jugs and buckets under the outlet outside. They get full very quickly but again dehumidifier. Seems like it just cools the room down I don’t know if there’s a difference .
Either way these things are awesome! These Willis energy is at a window unit and they don’t struggle, nice and quiet oscillating vans are great too
Especially how quietly they run outside compared to a heat pump or window unit. They can just kind of run smoothly. He barely hear it, but they do their thing I think is you’re fantastic but not a good way to remove excess moisture from your home

If your room is smaller than 350 to 400 square feet, a 9k unit is too big and will cause humidity issues! They make a 6k unit, but they are hard to find. My input after testing & evaluating.
Dry Mode will minimise fan speed so as not to cool the environment too much, just tipping over. But it is still cooling - kind of has to be, otherwise the water won't condense, to collect & drip away outside. My unit seems to have a fixed target of 50% humidity.
The odd thing though - is you can still 'set' the temperature. If this is higher than ambient - the unit will enter heating mode! I don't think it can be dehumidifying in that mode. I'm assuming that they're assuming that the adding of heat will automatically have the effect of dehumidifying - the way central heating (in the UK) is supposed to.

using my minisplit in ac mode seems to increase my humidity in one of my rooms. using dry mode decreases humidity in my room but it lowers room temp very rapidly to around 63 degrees in my room. could this be because my split unit is on a brick platform outside that is off level?

    • @J-Mart
      @J-Mart  2 роки тому

No its because in dry mode it's still running the compressor and doesn't stop cooling until it reaches a certain humidity level. This is normal and I hear the same issues from many others. Best bet is to run it in normal AC mode with a higher fan speed.

Hi from Australia. I was just wondering if you can keep it running on the dry mode all day? It’s always humid on the mid north coast of N.S.W. When I turn the dry mode on and have the fan on the 3 ( the second highest setting) the water from the water outlet hose just pours out at a small constant stream. Is that too much water coming out or is that normal ? And can I keep it like that all day. Anyway to you and your family have a great Christmas Day. 🇦🇺 ✝️ 👍🏻 ✝️ 🇦🇺

Hi Located in south Florida and have a single Mitsubishi compressor running two heads in a small space 550sq ft. (second head was installed to purposefully push air into the back area based on configuration of walls). I have had some mold issues and I had both heads deep cleaned and now I am trouble shooting with the dry mode. I set both units to dry mode with automatic fan and saw some reduction (cool as well). But humidity still 69-70. An ac friend said too much ac for area and recommends only running one head at a time at dry mode then again on cool mode and see what happens . In some of the replies below they say run fan at higher speed to pull more moisture out during dry mode. Does it matter if I have the larger compressor and only run one head or the other? Thoughts?

Look for the 💦 water droplet to select dehumidify: it cools the room better than a/c and seems more cost effective. In my experience, living in a 900 sq ft cabin next to a cave in east Tennessee, the dry mode is AWESOME. The a/c mode actually creates mold inside whereas the dry mode cools it and doesn't create the conditions for mold to form. Love this channel, BTW! Thank you :)

I came to figure out that one of the units was set to "DRY" while the other ones were on A/C.. Not sure how that occurred....but after researching it, I quickly determined that the one unit that was blinking was the one out of sync with the others. After correcting the mode setting, the blinking stopped and cooling resumed. Hope that helped (Four Months Later...LOL)

DRY MODE does NOT effect the temperature of the room; it reduces the humidity which makes it FEEL COOLER.
If the temperature outside is 73 degrees Fahrenheit & the humidity is 73% or above, the DRY MODE will make the inside of your home feel like 73 degrees. The “temperature reading” on the remote has NOTHING to do with the relative humidity in your home. So if you want your home cooler than 73 degrees Fahrenheit the COOL MODE should be on whatever temperature you want (72 or less) & that will take care of BOTH the temperature & humidity at a much higher electrical usage/cost.
FYI: July 4th weekend here on the east coast.
