Okay, I totally would buy the $75 sweater because, as you said, it looks exactly like the more expensive, was soft, washed well, and only had 2 minor issues. That's $225 invested in my retirement account while still looking classic... that's what would make me feel best. Feeling good is as important as looking good in my opinion. Great video, I like this experiment, do more of these please. 🙂💕
Except it won't last. Better quality lasts for decades, as opposed to one or two years. Depends what you want.

@@maryokeefe5351 keep in mind that just because something costs more, doesn’t mean it’s better quality. You have to investigate yourself. I’ve purchased more expensive cashmere before and some of those sweaters haven’t held up as well compared to most of my $100-$125 cashmeres.
@@elizabethmcdonald546 you’re so right. And sometimes it’s simply the name of the shop that dictates the price. For example, I can get an organic cotton t-shirt in one well known chain store in Australia for about $10 or I could go to one of the more upmarket stores and pay $70 for exactly the same thing. The quality of the garments is the same. And I’m betting that the workers in the factories that are contracted to the more expensive shop aren’t treated any better than those contracted to the cheaper shop.
@@maryokeefe5351 - Except the cheap one will last at least a few years, which is all most of us need. I don't need it to last 10 or 20 years because it wouldn't anyway, basing on how I wear it. I wear cashmere turtlenecks every day in winter, I prefer them to sweatshirts, and I like to have them in several colors. I wash them in a washer in a handwash setting as often as need. I really don't need this sweater for decades, and I don't believe the one for 300 would last decades if I wore it every day. Not possible, not when you have kids, want to wear that sweater on the train, bus, on a walk with a dog, under winter coats. In this case we are not talking about a 20 dollar or a 50 dollar sweater. We are talking about a natural fiber and a sweater reduced to $75.
Totally agree with high quality materials lasting longer... I have a hand-me-down cashmere sweater from my mom's. It is over 50 years old and i have been wearing it for decades. Washed & dried in machines even and it is still in top shape. And surprisingly I still get compliments every time i wear it. It's my favorite piece of clothing in my closet. Thanks Audrey! 💕

I would that on top of high quality materials, clothes made 50 years ago were likely constructed better compared to mass production today, even with high quality materials. How lovely that you have something from your mom that you still can wear and get so much enjoyment from.
@@sheilap2621 I agree. The materials from decades ago are completely different from the ones today. I even have 20 yr old suits that I still wear & wash in my machine & they still look great.
My husband owns a cashmere suit that was also passed down to him by his dad. It is also over 50 years old and in perfect shape, and steals the show at every gathering. Needless to say it's also one of my husband's most beloved treasures.
Yup, today they want you to buy more often so they make more money. Even once "higher quality brands" put out crap products. I learned about differences in cotton quality and stitching just so I know what to look for now.
I actually preferred the look of the cheaper sweater frame by frame, so I was surprised to learn it was the cheaper one

Funny you say that. I always seem to gravitate towards the expensive things even when I don't know the price! The expensive cashmere looked thicker, it was cut better given it was more fitted at the waist and wrist. It's a no brainer for me once she said the expensive one pills less. I'd rather spend $300 once in 5 years than $100 every couple of years and have to constantly maintain.
@@MG-uz5mr But I can have 3 sweaters for 300 and wear them every day the whole winter or actually 2-3 winters. I would need to spend 900 on expensive sweaters if I wanted three colors and wear them the entire winter. With the less expensive I can take a risk and wash it in the washer. I also don't believe the more expensive one would last me longer. All sweaters can pile a little. It's easy to remove it. Not all of my less expensive cashmere pile
@@laliday I agree. I have a couple of inexpensive "sweater combs" that take off pills quickly and easily. For those reading this who don't know, they aren't really combs; they have an edge that grabs the pills and removes them from the surface of the fabric. I use them on lots of things; anything that pills.
Vintage cashmere sweaters are exceptional. If you come across one that fits and flatters, grab it.
I decided to "treat my body" and buy soft, warm clothes this winter. I tend to feel cold, and I don't want a huge electric bill, so I keep my house cooler. If I wear 2 layers of wool, I'm feeling good. I found a couple cashmere sweaters second had for a steal from someone who was cleaning out their mom's '80's sweaters. After watching your videos and experimenting 2nd hand this winter, I'm sold - it's the way I'm going to shop moving forward.

Great video Audrey! my best purchase ever was a 2nd hand cashmere sweater for $10 - 12 years later I'm still wearing it and feel great when I put it on! Quality over quantity every time.
Yep, I have a $10 2nd hand black cashmere turtleneck that’s one of the oldest items in my closet; timeless, awesome every winter, and machine washes just fine.
I am an advocate for second hand, but when unable to find specific pieces, I also look for sales on off seasons.
A lot of times you can get sweaters half off if you buy them when the winter is almost over .

Audrey, what a fantastic video! I have a few nicer cashmere sweaters, and several $50 cashmere sweaters from the brand Quince and I've been pleased with my "cheap" cashmere sweaters as easy workhorse garments. I can tell the difference between my own, but both absolutely have a place in my wardrobe for different occasions. I'd love to see you do a comparison between two silk garments, this could be a really delightful series!
Quince is par excellence. I've had great success with J Crew cashmere
I second the sentiments on Quince. The baby cashmere sweater on their site is the softest that I own and definitely worth the price. I would also like to hear more about silk as there are many options out there right now at all price points.

Wow, I thought the sweater on the right was more expensive because the shoulder seams seemed smoother and more even. I just bought a black Italian made Wool and Cashmere coat in EUC at Goodwill for $11.99. Definitely the best second hand purchase I've ever made for an article of clothing. Same here. Much nicer and smoother stitching than the 300 one! The cheeper one looked much much better than the expensive one!

OMG!! I loved this video content. I was convinced that the $75 jumper was in fact, the most expensive. I visually preferred the look and the shoulder stitching of the more budget friendly option.
I could tell which was the $75 and which was the $300 based on the construction of the collar. The collar on the $300 was seamless while the $75 one was a bit wobbly like there was some shrinking. Nonetheless both are beautiful but I’m not willing to spend $300 on a sweater 😄 Thanks for the informative video, Audrey!

I have a sleeveless cashmere tee that I thrifted. It has become a wonderful staple except in hottest months. I even had to remove a stain recently. It worked and it has remained soft with very little pilling.
I think wool and silk would be excellent subjects for future videos.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between an item that cost more and one that cost less. I have a number of tee shirts that I bought at Walmart s few years ago, and they still look brand new. I also have a couple of tee shirts that I spent ten times the price of the Walmart tees on, and they have not lasted nearly as long or as well, and they came from a quality clothing company.

It's a cheap one and it gets fuzzy really quickly. This could be a great time to look for that second-hand sweater on Ebay following your tips on shopping off-season.

My husband and I have been loving Naadam's $75 sweaters since they've been a wonderful gateway for us into cashmere. I've definitely found some decent and good quality cashmere sweaters on second hand websites for much less than $75 as you've mentioned in your video! That's such a great recommendation for people wanting to upgrade at a lower price point. I liked this comparison because we've debated whether to get more expensive cashmere sweaters now that we know we love cashmere and know how to care for them. Our Naadam sweaters experienced some pilling, but we were able to use a defuzzer to quickly fix them up to look new again. I'll definitely keep your notes in mind when we're ready to purchase more cashmere!

Thank you for putting together the video. Visually, the expensive one has tighter knit, and I actually guessed it correctly from this visual reference. I have a few I bought from years back and the newer ones. I find that the older ones were made of better quality. Now there are more cashmere, but many are made with less material, 2-ply vs 3-ply. I would like to see you create a video on silk, different kinds of silk, weight, texture, and colors it holds due to the different types of silk.

I bought a very thick knitted cashmere jacket at a factory sale of a very high end designer about ten years ago. I wear it almost daily as a sweater, House dress, coat and dressing gown. I machine wash it at least once a month ( flat dry). It is as beautiful today as the day I bought it and it has not shown one pill. Best $250 I ever spent (today this company sells a similar item for over $4000).

Like many I was totally fooled by the details and thought the cheapest was the most expensive. I like it better too. I love cashmere, even in a blend it will add softness to any sweater if you can’t afford the real deal. Love this type of video, you can definitely do more like these and make us guess until the end. I bought a 2nd hand cashmere sweater last autumn from a higher end brand and I absolutely love it. I definitely notice a difference in quality compared to my other cashmere sweater that's more middle range, same as you described it.
By the way, I could tell the higher priced one right from the start, it has kind of a halo around it.
My higher quality sweater regains it's shape after every wear just by hanging out in my closet over night ...

I've bought a lot of super-high quality designer sweaters secondhand - you can really hit gold in the men's section, especially if you're looking for something slightly oversize and cozy. They're a fraction of the price of new and they LAST.
@@rebeccaw2197 thank you for reminding me of the mens section. I can't ever find sweaters long enough and broad enough for my lanky broad shouldered frame so I have shopped the mens section and found one sweater. It can be tricky though as they think men should have big biceps to go with them.

Not just second hand. Retailers like Land's End and Talbots have clearance sales when you can buy cashmere or merino wool sweaters for 75% off online. I also bought two brand new $200 Land's End cashmere sweaters on ebay, still in the packages, for $50 each.

I like hunting for pre-loved cashmere. A few of my favorites are a 50/50 silk cashmere mix. So amazingly soft and thin 💕 getting them second hand is not as hard on the budget obviously. They must have cost a lot new. Almost no pilling and no wrinkles after washing. Just pulled them into shape and dried laying flat. Awesome quality and basic colors which will stay with me until they disintegrate 😄
Up close, I guessed which one was more expensive, but when you wore them, the $75 sweater looked better/more expensive.

I kept on choosing the $75 version during the comparison images before the price reveal, and for $300, you can literally buy 4 different cashmere sweaters in 4 different colors: it's a no-brainer.
What if the 75$ one was made by a Bangladesh woman who was paid less than 2$ per day? Is it still a no-brainer?

I couldn't tell the difference, but in a light color I can see it being an issue with continuous wear. I think wool coats versus blends would make a great tutorial. It's a reason why I look for vintage pieces. Also jeans are a good idea since so many fabrics replace cotton today. Thank you Audrey!! I got a pair of bittania's from the 70's I love them. BTW it had the tags on.

Ah yes, it's Audrey.
Actually, fibres like cashmere and alpaca (very similar in properties) are hypoallergenic. The goats and alpacas don't produce lanolin, and their fibres are so fine and soft, they don't produce irritation. I react to some wool garments too, but never to cashmere or alpaca
@@katherine6571 I always have to wear something underneath a cashmere sweater to keep from itching. I don’t think it’s the lanolin as I use lanolin on my lips and skin with no problems. I dont think it’s really an allergy, just irritation if it’s touching my skin.
you might not be allergic to cashmere. it;s much softer.
@@katherine6571 Nope, I can't wear any wool or most cashmere next to my skin without something underneath. For me, I don't think I'm allergic, I think it's the texture. And what some people think is really soft is like pins sticking into me. I don't think it's an allergy for me because I can sometimes wear merino wool just fine. It depends on how smooth it is.

I'd never bought cachemire before this winter, when I bought a pullover and pants set for my baby from, I know, H&M. It may seem counterintuitive to buy something so expensive for someone who won't be wearing it next year but this was THE BEST clothing purchase I made for her. She literally wore it every single day as a second skin from autumn to spring, sandwiched between onesies and outer layers. It was so soft I couldn't stop petting this tiny pullover when it first arrived in the mail and it was still incredibly soft when I handed it down. No pills, no shrinkage, nothing.

I got in December last year 2 Uniqloo cashmere turtlenecks and i cant believe the pilling after each wear both under arms and on the sides and in the tummy area to the point that I have to use the little de bobler thingy every time i,m wearing them. On the other side I got a few Brunello Cucinelli and Eric Bompard pieces on Ebay about 10 years ago and they look like new. So id you do your research and of course store them properly (I use cedar balls during the summer and store them in air tight bags over the summer) you can score some amazing cashmere that will last you for a long time 😊
Another great video!💕 I 2nd hand shop a lot. It is inexpensive, great for the environment and allows me to afford quality pieces for very low prices. I have a huge blazer collection, and I thrifted them because the quality is so much better!
Same for me! I would have never been able to have such a nice wardrobe without second hand shopping. My blazers are all like new and amazing quality. I see so many cheap blazers in the stores for pretty much the same price and they are all made of polyester. About 70% of my wardrobe is now second hand shopping. For all the same reasons you mentioned, this is my favorite way to shop. When I want something, I always try to find it second hand first.
@@frenchstyle7038 glad I’m not the only one that knows the secret lol! I grew up 2nd shopping with my mom and I always loved it. I love vintage! I feel like clothes are just not made the way they use to be. Most vintage clothing seem to have been made with great quality and care. I’m plus size and can still find amazing pieces!

“Oh Georgie! It’s cashmere!” Every time I hear the word cashmere it reminds of the Seinfeld episode where George bought Elaine a marked down cashmere sweater and it had a red dot mark on it. Ok now that I got that out of my system, I thoroughly enjoyed why cashmere is so expensive. And I was surprised that the less expensive one pulled a bit. I don’t have the budget for either sweater but if I do happen to come across one second hand, I will pay attention to the details you shared. I would enjoy other videos with comparisons. I’d like to learn how to identify quality fabrics etc. with more knowledge. Great video 💕
I love cashmere and have several cashmere items. One other difference is in the ply. I have a couple of 2-ply sweaters that were more expensive due to their thickness. I also shop second-hand and have bought several used cashmere sweaters. Year-end sales are also a good place to find them. I am a quality over quantity girl 😀
I agree! I choose a mid-range cashmere price point ($120 to $240-ish) -from a company that sources ethically and garments are certified free of toxic residue- but always wait until there’s a good sale, or deep-discount end-of-season clearance. During lockdown I decided to prioritize at home comfort and bought several cashmere sweaters to wear instead of sweats. They were so comfortable that I actually felt nurtured during such a stressful time! There is no going back! 😉 Any itchiness or pilling would be a dealbreaker, so spending a little more was well worth it. I wore them *every day* and figure that they will soon pay for themselves because they enabled me to lower my thermostat by 5 degrees!

I had an Old Navy I bought on Ebay years ago so it probably was old when I got it.
It was the softest cashmere I have ever owned.
I wore it a lot in cold weather. Evenutually the elbows got so thread bare it was pathetic. Then I noticed the area right below the armpits was getting bare. Poor old cashmere I finally was embarrassed to wear it if anyone might come to visit.
I couldn't bear to trash such a nice old friend. It still hangs in my closet so I can compare it to the others once in awhile. LOL
I have one amazing T-neck that I love to wear but only at home. For taking off on the motorcycle I opt for the merino wool ones. They are tougher so I don't think I have to worry about the jacket rubbing bare spots on them. The cashmere is just too soft to risk that way.
Just So you know, the merino can come close to cashmere IF it is the good quality version.
Also, you mentioned washing yours, I would be most grateful if you would explain exactly what you do. I suspect the ones I have bought on ebay were sold because they tired of paying the high price of dry cleaning.
Nice video. I saw just in the end wich one was the expensive one because of the hang of the fabric. I think high quality fabrics usually have a special "softness". But the rest was very similar.
The Kashmir goat at 1:03 looks as if it's enjoying being combed! Honestly, I couldn't see the difference between the two sweaters. Love your striped shirt-- I can tell it's high-quality because the stripes line up all the way across, even on the sleeves.
I get my cashmere from House of Bruar in the UK, mostly because the sizing is so accurate- they give you the actual garment measurements. My favourite is a cashmere/silk but oh my goodness it pills, but it's a cableknit. i think the plain sweaters run around $150 Canadian. When you have a few short sleeve crew neck sweaters in pima or cashmere you don't need much else. Also there is 2 ply versus 3 ply to keep in mind.

As w/ any purchase , be it clothing , home items or even a car , how it is used , cared for & maintained is key for longevity .
Love cashmere sweaters and have several thrifted ones and several $75 Naadam ones....I love them all and they have all worn, washed, and dried well...a touch of pilling but a quick comb and all good.....Big Hugs....and looking forward to more comparisons...I honestly believe that we do not need to spend $$$$$$$$ on items all the time...sometimes the less expensive version is just as good if not better....This is a great series honey...
I agree. Actually I prefer not to spend too much on items of clothing or handbags because I feel like they should be saved for special occasions, like I don't want to mess them up. I'd rather buy 4 $75 cashmere sweaters than one that costs $300, that way I get to wear them all the time guilt free.

Dina Wiltshire exactly! That's probably how we end up with some of those nice thrifted finds.. from people who saved things for special occasions that never came or they outgrew. I wrote in another comment that I just bought an Italian wool/cashmere coat from Goodwill for $12. It was another $12 to dry clean, looks great. I almost bought one from Nordstrom for $500 last winter, so glad I waited! Because I paid so little I will not have any issue wearing it as a daily coat. Gotta love thrifting! Xox
I am a goodwill shopper too. I have some gorgeous pieces thrifted for less than $10 and in most cases $5.99. Love hunting there for treasures 🤩🤩🤩

Really interesting. I love cashmere and once or twice a year in the sale I buy a piece of cashmere from Brora, my favourite cashmere shop.
I have jumpers 10 years old and they still look like new and are softer with washing.

I just had to recycle my 15 year old cashmere long beige sweater. It was about 300 euro, when I bought it and I wore it, washed it, put elbow pads on when they wore through, but It finally wore out under the arms. It was my faithful friend! Gave it to my rug hooking friend, so it will live on in a work of art! I wore it all the time in the winter! I will miss it!

Great video. The only cashmere sweaters I have purchased are from thrift stores. Anywhere from 6 to $12. Finding them off season is our best bet so in the spring and summer I search though sweater section. Unfortunately many of the ones that I've seen have lost their shape or have the pin point moth holes, so those are things that I examine the garment for. Pilling doesn't bother me because I have a nice sweater shaver I use
