Riz Ahmed in the Sound of Metal is possibly THE best performance I have ever seen. The subtlety and depth of emotion he is able to portray is incredibly impressive. Shout out Paul Racci too, his last scene with Ruben/Riz is fantastic acting. Well deserved nomination for Supporting Actor.
All respectable choices in my opinion. This young man has no need to be concerned about the films he chose. And I'd love to see which films Mr. Kim might choose in twenty to thirty more years of life and film experiences.
I know. I was surprised to see how when I got mine. I hadn't received the Ingmar Bergman set yet because they had to press more after the first editions sold out.
'The Philadelphia Story' is a classic Hollywood comedy, one I find even more endearing for making reference to the classic Tang Chinese poet Li Bai (though not by name) and being, to the best of my knowledge, the second film in history in which "Over the Rainbow" is sung, only a year after its perfect introduction in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Katharine Hepburn's queerest movie, incidentally, is 'Sylvia Scarlett', the strange and beguiling 1935 drag dramedy from director George Cukor, which finds Hepburn's character passing herself off as a boy and having a succession of consequent misadventures, a really audacious premise for Thirties Hollywood.
Excellent as always, especially Godzilla haha. To Criterion: please consider experimenting with the lighting a bit to see if you can eliminate or at least minimize the risk of glare on the covers when the cases are held at reasonable angles. I'd also appreciate a superimposed image of the cover in the corner, so I can get a better look at it while guests are talking about it. But that's only a nice-to-have, especially compared to the glare issue. Thank you for creating such a brilliant idea for a video series.
It’s nice for someone to get the Godzilla box set. I hope he doesn’t drop it because it’s heavy. I know cause I got mines. Love his choices of The Others and In The Mood For Love.
I think Mothra represents more of the maternal qualities of the kaiju genre. Gonna say great call on Sound of Metal. Just an amazing film that pulls you in from the get go.
I love the picks, but I’m so OCD, and I’m seeing all the format picks and there’s 4K’s Blu-rays and DVDs all mixed. The DVDs would have to be exchanged for me. Lmao
I always have said, if I had the chance to go into the Criterion Closet, my 1st pick would be Gojira!! I didn't even know there was a collection like that. NOTHING wrong with his tastes, hahaha!!
@@christophermccandless8352 Yes. The original title is a Chinese idiom, and its literal translation is "Spring light suddenly appears." However, the phrase is often used figuratively to describe a romantic or intimate moment between two people, especially when their feelings are just beginning to emerge or become apparent.
People arent upset in the comments cause of his choices, it seems obv to me that people are upset because an asian gay man discussed briefly his identity....
just took a sec to read your other comments, you post about gay people all the time. sweetie, you’re gay. 🎉 congratulations now quit being a little bitxh

Can’t agree more

And lots more additions to the collection!
Are you on the movie fire island on Hulu???
So glad he mentioned Happy Together, such an amazing movie.
The Others.. also one of my all time favourite horror films
Same, I rarely hear people give it a shout out. I was stoked 😊
That Godzilla collection is gigantic!

First time I've ever seen someone mention The Big Chill. Really a fantastic and forgotten movie about adulthood and maturity.
I hated that movie when I was younger. Now that I’m an adult, I love it.
Joel's version of The big chill. I would watch that. Great movie picks.
I would be first in line! I hope it gets made someday.
Finally someone grabs the Godzilla set! 😃
Excellent as always, especially Godzilla haha.

Great suggestions seconded by me!
I'm the same. Mothra is my favorite Kaiju as well.
I love what the series becoming. I’ve checked out a lot of recommendations on here. Will definitely be checking out Happy Together.
Loved “Sound of Metal”
It’d be really cool if you chose me, a normal person, to do a stint in the Criterion Closet. Really cool idea. Think about it, @criterion
I just saw Joel doing a comedy panel show today in Australia, cool!
love the hedwig and the angry inch pull
just saw it for the first time myself and adored it
What about The Iron Giant?
Great picks!
"Bad opinion on cinema" and he picks literal bangers I mean
Are you the one on rhe movie fire lsland? On Hulu?
Yes, he was in that. Wrote it, too. 😊
Love me some JKB 💜 all solid choices, no notes

Love his choices of The Others and In The Mood For Love.
If he's smart, he'll ask them to send it to his house via DHL (or whatever Criterion's preference is)
Joel shouldn't sell himself short, he has impeccable taste. In movies, and in MEN! Riz Ahmed is gorgeous 😍
Glad he took the original release of In The Mood For Love with the good colour grading. Bought that one myself recently 🙂
Hedwig!!!!! Masterpiece!

I’d only pick 4K lol. Only normal blu-ray coming in my house are anime.
@@37654 I have so many movies. I upgrade them with format changes, but if I can’t get it in 4K, a BD will do!
I always have said, if I had the chance to go into the Criterion Closet, my 1st pick would be Gojira!! I didn't even know there was a collection like that. NOTHING wrong with his tastes, hahaha!!
Sound of metal 4E !!
we love Mothra
Nice guy with deep cuts.
This dude has IMPECCABLE taste
OMG I ADORE HIM ❤
wow!
who?
mothra is gay coded. alright i'm on board
Wait, am i gay for liking Mothra?
Mothra's always been my favorite but I thought she was a girl. 🤷🏽♀️ Anyways, you better go to the theater this weekend in either 3D or IMAX. 😉
Mothra is THE female kaiju, that's how she always have babies grow up to replace her.
Is mothra mother or a mother
Mothra was gentle?????
great taste for a guy who eats (drinks?) blended-up chicken breasts
‘Happy Together’, yes. An emotional movie but a horrible title, meant to be ironic?
…yes
I've heard the chinese title is better

My man pressed random on the name generator
This is a really lovely one, he has better taste than he gives himself credit for hahaa
People arent upset in the comments cause of his choices, it seems obv to me that people are upset because an asian gay man discussed briefly his identity....
GO JOEL
I need to find someone like Joel.......... #MANIFESTING
I think that man is gay.
thanks eagle eye
this is beyond embarrassing. His movie fire island was beyond repulsive. Why are you promoting DEI hires?
Blah blah blah
y’all are supposed to have ME on it. ME. its cool that you have this guy on it i guess. but it’s mostly ME that you should have on it
Who picks these guests? 🙄
Even by Criterion standards, this is nauseating.
feel free to throw up until you’ve got nothing left, you little snowflake 😂
just took a sec to read your other comments, you post about gay people all the time. sweetie, you’re gay. 🎉 congratulations now quit being a little bitxh
Yikes. You must have terrible taste then.
Sorry, why??
Cause he doesnt approach them by discussing the cinematography and the second unit direction?
Why are you even here ruling 528? Shouldn't you be trolling elsewhere?
Beside In the mood, it’s pretty-pretty bad
I don't think so at all. You just sound like a film snob, to be honest.
In the mood might be the worst pick, wong kar wai sucks.
♥️✨
where the f LIST?!?!?!?!?!?!
Man, the artwork on the Lone Wolf and Cub pack was unbeatable, but the Godzilla pack is a piece of crap from Criterion.
