He might be my N°1. I rarely choose a favorite in any type of art, but when it come to actors his range is so huge, he played so many different characters and killed it in these very difficult and different roles, its crazy.
He puts everything into every film he makes. Even if the film is a bad film, Willem might be the best thing in it.
Oh, yeah. He's amazing, one of my favourites is The Hunter. Might be a bit simpler, but it's a beautiful film, where as always, Dafoe does an amazing performance.

The fact that he wanted to remake Onibaba and didn’t because he RESPECTED the source material so much that he didn’t end up doing it, makes him fucking even more awesome in my book. If you’re gonna remake something it cannot disrespect the source material. Cronenbergs the fly is a perfect example of an amazing remake.❤

The 2018 suspiria remake, while polarazing to some, is also an example of a great remake to me. It takes the concept of the origibal and twists it into something diffrent while still showing respect to the original. I see it as the film equivilent to the jimi hendrix cover of all along the watch tower, same tune played in a completely diffrent way.

Agreed. Dario himself said he didn’t like it much, and I understand that, he’s probably very protective of Suspiria because it was him and Daria Nicolodi that originally unleashed it on the world, but while the remake definitely has a lot of flaws and needed 20 minutes cut off the runtime, it’s still an extremely engaging film, almost just as much as the original Suspiria, but in a very different way.

There was a time that I was running a video store in Orlando, Florida and we were one of the only stores to carry Last Temptation. Had a few people come in and complain. One day an older couple came in, the seemed sweet enough and asked to buy our copy. Turns out they were Willem's parents. The story gets better as years later the first big Hollywood film I wrote on was "Pavilion of Women" starring....Willem Dafoe.
Why were there complaints? Was it just a liberal contempt for conservatives sort of thing? Or because the movie is so graphic? I’m not religious myself, but… you know… if I had a problem with religious art or imagery, I’d consider myself mental.
@@colin5577 The film was hated by Conservatives, mostly. It was considered a sacrilege. It was massively protested and picketed and even banned in some countries all over the world.

I just remember that on its small budget, it brought in a profit roughly equal to America’s national debt. It also seemed to kill Jim Caviezel’s career. Anyway… I guess some people are always unhappy about something.

I could genuinely listen to Willem Dafoe talk for ever, he just spills wisdom and fun in the smallest of anecdotes. He has lived a really interesting life. It also helps that he has such a nice voice to listen to.

We all know why present-day Hollywood does it with mainstream stuff, but why remake a movie like Onibaba? Or Nosferatu (Eggers) for that matter... Pick an obscure b-movie and improve it, like a real filmmaker would do.
His performance in the Lighthouse is off the charts. Incredible.

@jamesmack3314 Ugh I mean I put etc? It was a throwaway, and you can't get them all, there's a whole lot of underrated character actors like: Jeffrey Wright. Actors who even in supporting roles absolutely dissolve into the role. Dicaprio is a great actor, but as I get older I find some his ticks a little cliché. Matt Damon does not invest nearly the same energy as he used to, he's a good actor but get him off there. Christian Bale is years ahead of Dicaprio. I mean all of this is subjective, but watching movies all these decades I feel a pretty strong intuition for acting based on its service to the script, transformational physical traits, vocal control, intonation etc. If an actor is ticking all that stuff perfectly and I'm also often forgetting who they are while I watch them perform its a pretty good marker... I think Dicaprios most nuanced performance is in Killers of the flower moon, and the departed - but neither of those ever reach something equal to CAPOTE or There will be blood" - where I literally cannot recognize or believe what Im watching; Not overdone or overacted either

It was so cathartic to see Willem get his long overdue Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, and now his Criterion picks. Despite him not winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Godwin Baxter, Hollywood and Criterion find other ways to honor him.
The Walk of Fame stars can be bought though. Agents often buy them when an actor is promoting something. It's actually cool he is so late getting one as it's probably because he doesn't care too much about it.

I watched the first 15 minutes of that movie and it seemed really dated.
i watched it for the first time a few days ago. i rated it 89/100. i particularly love the style and william peterson's performance. great photography and great score by wang chung. dafoe was a great choice for his role in it; i think highly of him as an actor. a very skillfully made movie. an exceptional pulp thriller.

He's like a kid in a candy store!! I absolutely love his enthusiasm!! It reminds me of the increasingly-rare time people can have these moments in a video store. And the several hours I used-to spend exploring the aisles, humorously observing what other people were talking about movies as they would pick something out to rent or to buy. It's an experience much more lively than a bookstore or library, and it has gone by the wayside. I don't feel old saying this either. I feel like an antique fly on the wall.

Many years ago, I was delivering some props to Bray Studios in England. Willem Dafoe suddenly rushed up to me, in costume, and asked me anxiously if I knew where in the studio they were filming 'Victory' because he was starring in it but had got lost! I said I didn't know where they were filming it but I'd try and help him find it, and together we got him to the set in the end. He was lovely!

Willem is such a different person to most of his character roles. His characters are often uncomfortable and cold but he is so warm and has such a positive attitude. Seems like a really nice guy.

Loved him in Oliver Stone’s ‘Platoon’.
I've been following his career since I saw a screening of "The Loveless" some 40 years ago. I saw "Streets of Fire" and "To Live and Die in L.A." over the next couple of years, and then finally "Platoon". I've been following him religiously ever since. Kills me when people ONLY know the Green Goblin. He's given so many masterful performances.
One of my favorites is his character in Boondock Saints. I think it was the first movie I saw him in when I was a kid, and he really nailed it.
He is an actor who gets even better with age (like a fine, stout wine). Platoon was excellent and his work in recent films such as The Florida Project and The Lighthouse cement his status in my personal pantheon of favorite actors.
Michael Shannon and Daniel Day-Lewis are also amongst that throng of thespians.

As a Gen Z guy who knew him first from Spider-Man, I agree entirely. The guy has had so many roles in both blockbuster and arthouse films. His Goblin is iconic, but he has been in so many classics over the years and he's carried every poor film he's starred in.
He is amazing in New Rose Hotel (a William Gibson short story, so it's cyberpunk but on the corporate side of the genre). It's basically just him and Christopher Walken doing crazy dialogs with Gibson Corp jargon, with some Asia Argento thrown in there for a bit.
Life Aquatic is one of my favorite films!
These videos being me back the good old dvd days man. There’s something about physically picking out movies and reading the back. Streaming is too easy. You feel more connected to the movie when you drive somewhere and get it or consume it via video store or the movie theater. Thank you for this, truly.
A-list royalty in the closet. Hopefully Light Sleeper gets a Criterion 4k in the not too distant future. A masterpiece, cult film, underappreciated in its era. Perfect for a Criterion release.
This movie is absolutely gorgeous. However Le Samourai is also not bad. Both deal with solitude in some way.
I'd love Criterions of Light Sleeper and Affliction, both Paul Schrader and Dafoe pairings, though Dafoe's role is smaller in Affliction. Excellent films, though.

Seeing Will taking Ashes and Diamonds warms my heart. I was blessed to see it in cinema. Cult classic here in Poland. I recommend to watch more Z. Cybulski movies, all are great!
After reading about Ashes and Diamonds in film books when I was young back in the '70s I was beyond thrilled when Embassy put this movie on its International Collection VHS series in the mid 1980s in the U.S. (along with the other films in Wajda's war trilogy). There was one local video store that catered to higher-brow movie tastes just because the owner was a badass and progressive and he had these movies. I was a loyal customer. Man was still alive in his 90s as of two years ago. His memory was fading but I was glad to talk to him one more time. The original novel of Ashes and Diamonds is even greater, but it's a hard book to find. Luckily I own it. Amazing read.

I adore Willem Defoe. One of the few great actors with an appearance you can not forget.
Dafoe is always great, but his role in Poor Things just blew me away! He once said that he likes to play characters that draw the audience to the world they’re depicting and him as Godwin Baxter really shows. In one brilliant stroke of comedy in the opening of the film, he completely disarmed me and told me to just enjoy the experience. And what an experience that was! I know it might be a bit premature to say this, but, in my opinion, Poor Things is one of the greatest Films I have ever seen! Everything is note-perfect! Especially Dafoe’s funny, touching and unique work!

Unquestionably one, if not the finest, actor of his generation for the daring variety and flawless performances in the roles he's done. I really appreciate that he loves Onibaba and wanted to remake it but stopped when he felt he couldn't be true to the source material. That's a humility too rare in movies. I'm fine with remakes but to me it seems like too many filmmakers are either certain they "get" the original or they don't care about it. Cool to see Willem has the self-awareness.

Trying to find the words to express gratitude, there’s too many. To have Mr. Defoe guest lecture in my self selected courses on cinema…I benefit from these videos and thank you. I often get a disc version of these ideas, not streaming, and make an event (complete with popcorn) with friends and family. Cinema appreciation lives. 🙏🏻
