- The comedian, actor, and director talks about loving the relatable weirdness of GREY GARDENS and the compulsive passion of CRUMB; praises Miranda July’s singular, offbeat voice; and shares how THE 400 BLOWS (a Natasha Lyonne recommendation) evokes empathy for the pains of growing up.

She had me at "most people in the Criterion closet don't know how to hold a tote bag." After that, I smiled all the way through.
How is she holding it better
Men don't hold bags like that.
It is kind of refreshing to see a filmmaker pick out a particular Blu-Ray and hear her admit she hasn't seen it yet. It's something you don't see every day on this channel.
More folks should select films they haven't seen.
I saw her two days in a row in NYC. The second time, I was standing behind her on line at a coffee shop. I broke my habit of leaving celebs alone because I was in my peak Brooklyn Nine Nine phase. Told her it was the second time in as many days. She said it must be fate and the abruptly turned back around 👏🏼👏🏼
"stakes up the wazoo" is the funniest phrase to use to describe trainspotting but so true
She was on the christmas panel show, "big fat quiz of the year," and the Host Jimmy Carr was introducing her saying, "we're so happy you agreed to come on." She said," I googled all of you and didn't know anyone, but I appreciate the free trip to London." Love her so much
I was charmed by the blind/semi-blind picks. Wish more people did that.
Love that she brings a goofiness and awareness of trying to be lofty and pretentious
She’s a Comedian too and has that mastered
@@TangoDelta70right?
Selecting Bergman titles inspired by your love of fruit? Based.
Honestly disappointed hearing she never saw wild strawberries
Wild strawberries take so real...wild strawberries are literally so good...
@@zackalbun9830 The 1987 film 'Housekeeping' has a brief scene of a character eating wild strawberries.
"we are all doing that" she got the movie's idea without watching it
jumping from Trainspotting to Crumb. chefs kiss all the way brilliant.
Trainspotting W. I don’t care how many ppl had the poster on their wall back in college, the movie (and book) are still 10/10
I had the birdspotting poster from Loaded mag lol
Definitely on every dorm wall you can imagine
Try the whole trilogy. The sequel and (subsequent) prequel are just as good as the first book.
I definitely had this on my wall in college. Hilariously because I thought I was so different. "Yea you guys watch Transformers or whatever but I watch obscure underground art films like Trainspotting"
@@crustymcgee6580 I hated the sequel. Couldn't stand the characters
A+ Criterioning
Kudos to her for sneaking The Blob in there at the last moment 😄
Been a fan of Peretti's for years. Such a natural, smart, sharp presence. I love strawberries too. Will be watching Mikey and Nicky on the Channel tonight, thanks Chelz!
I love seeing people do a blind pick of a movie in the collection! I do that myself all the time and it’s a great way to find movies you never would see otherwise!🥰
I wish this was twice as long.
The Brooklyn 99 Queen!!! Keep influencing us Gina.
This is now my favorite closet picks video
I also love strawberries. 😀
Yeah, but I only love tame strawberries.
@@cgbleakboooo
she's so real actually
Loved this. Been a fan of hers for awhile. Her blind buy of Girlfriends right out the gate is a great choice. Her mentioning Miranda July, Natasha Lyonne, and Elaine May just makes the whole video perfect. Great work Criterion getting her in the closet!
the way she just casually dropped "i hate child actors" lmaooo
Plucking Red Balloon off the shelf. I got misty--the "children's movie" that made us wiser to the world. A great double bill with 400 Blows.
"A breath of fresh air blows gently and welcomely into the Criterion closet, known for it's name-dropping and high-brow flexing."
Love Chelsea Peretti! So genuine and hilarious. Spinster was an understated gem. Her podcast is a blast. Solid picks and charming as always. Thanks CC!
Her standup special is one of the best. No idea why she doesnt do standup anymore
I think I heard her on a podcast saying that she hates doing standup. It's a shame because she's so great at it. She hosted some award show a few years back and her monologue was hilarious.
She’s come such a long way
I can still remember watching “Smoking Gun’s World’s Dumbest “ with her (and others) doing comedy commentary for all this home videos.
All those films are top notch. The Red Balloon is my origin story from childhood of the magic of cinema.
My mother also showed me The Red Balloon when I was a child ❤
Wait what, did not realize until now that Gina from Brooklyn 99 was married to Jordan Peele. Also yes, never expected to see her here. Speaking of which, her "Wild Strawberry" bit does sound very much like it was Gina speaking haha.
I did not know these two things. TY
Natasha Lyonne and Chelsea Peretti discussing a ‘pretentious’ movie would be brilliant.
bhai tu idhar bhi aa gaya😭😭
@@AbhishekThakur-ux4zhGirl it’s Criterion. Everyone is here 😂
Her comments on miranda july is so awesome I’ve been waiting for someone to pick that movie, it’s one of my personal favourites
Movies for adults and kids:
My Neighbor Totoro, Ernest & Celestine, Song of the Sea, Ponyo, The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant is on Criterion???
@@Adrianovaz2007not yet. let's hope so real soon.
@@thevoid99other company has the rights already with a special edition so doubt it
They’re not concerned about kids which is fine. There’s other companies for that
“Girlfriends….. Not the TV show 😉” Thank you for making that very important Black cultural reference Queen!
I’d trust her recommendations. She’s awesome ❤
This is the best Criterion Closet Picks I’ve ever seen.
400 Blows is my all time favorite film. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
This series and the letterboxd top four series give you insight into which actors and directors have taste in movies and who don't and I find that interesting lol. But I'm glad that we get to watch people get over the hump of finding movies intimidating to just enjoying what the world has to offer, and services like CC are making good movies more available which is cool.
Chels Peretts! One of the greats
Is there a step stool in the closet? The higher shelves need more attention. Also I’m happy for Chelsea’s tote-holding insight.
We watched "The Red Balloon" multiple years during my elementary school run, which, in hindsight, was a little odd because I grew up in the burbs in Houston, TX. I've asked other folks that went to school in other parts of Texas if they watched it as kids and they look at me like I have two heads. Maybe it was more of a generational thing than a regional thing, but, whatever the case, I love that little film.
400 blows is brutal and brilliant.
Probably the best one of these vids, I love Chelsea 🤣❤️ her humour is unmatched
A breath of fresh air
Mikey and Nicky is one of my favorites! And yeah, I also avoided The 400 Blows for a long while but loved it when I finally saw it. Wish they had The Blob '88
Blob '88 is Shout/Scream Factory and if they (or Arrow) ever start doing closet segments, I will pursue a career in the cruel, cutthroat world of showbiz as a pretext for getting in there, haha
@@jobjoho Arrow Video ftw!
“As a mom, totally bag 😜” lolll love her realness
Goodfellas & Trainspotting are my 2 favorite films of the 1990's. They are the only films i still watch consistently every year from that decade. Yup even more than Pulp Fiction or Titanic.
The Red Balloon was the OG version of the plastic bag nonsense in American Beauty.
I appreciate your comment SO MUCH! As a chatterbox kid I HATED the Red Balloon with a deep deep passion. 😂
Nah. Red Balloon is a beautiful film, but that scene was copied from a Dorsky film.
Nonsense?.... 🤨
@@pabloata4708 I’ll concede that maybe it’s an acquired taste.
Can never get enough Chelsea.
Not sure if the ''Strawberries'' was a bit (that was hilarious).
Can't wait to watch her (film) movie.
I love you, Chelsea! Can't wait to see your FILM!!!
The Red Balloon finally appearing in a closet pick. Thanks Chelsea! One of my all time faves, a wonder of a movie ❤
That was great. Great shirt too.
There really should be more representation for kids or family friendly films in the Criterion Collection. Outside of Wall-E, the closest is maybe The Princess Bride. How is there not a single Muppets or Jim Henson-related movie in there? Or heck, how about The Iron Giant?
The Black Stallion
Kes, Fantastic Mr Fox, Watership Down.
@@thecinematicmindOh yes, you're right. Although, given how many kids got nightmares from Watership Down, I kinda question categorizing it as a kids movie. Heh.
Why? You have Disney and studio ghibli and whatnot. Stop trying to take up space from lesser known films, lost classics, and international gems for the muppets
@@Nothereforit174 Alternatively, we could have both.
Petite Maman is really close to being an arthouse kids movie. I wish it went more in that direction (slightly more telegraphed conflicts and emotions mainly).
The Red Balloon? Lucky her; very lucky her child. What a truly magical film❤❤❤
“Thank you Criterion for 30 minutes of peace” 😂
I love when guests stuff the bag to the brim, and she could definitely teach a class on proper tote bag handling!
I love her. Shes so cool
how DO you hold a tote bag ?
Yes!I feel the same way about Grey Gardens! I love that movie
Her and her husband must be the smartest and funniest married couple on the planet.
I first saw Girlfriends in a film class in 1982!! It was a Women and Film class in college. Melanie is great in it. An early role!!
chelsea is truly for the people
I love when she picked the Wild Strawberry movie !! ❤❤❤ I love it that she says , I love strawberries ! She did a fantastic job in picking out great movies in the closet pick ! I was so happy that she picked the The Blob movie with Steve McQueen 😊😊😊👍👍😍😍🤩🤩!!
So glad Girlfriends is finally on disc! Well worth tracking down.
Girlfriends from 1978 . I was 20 and either right before or after I went to Army Basic Training then college. I was clueless about women. I watched this film and was probably even more confused. But I went drinking with friends which was something I could handle well back then. 🤣Trainspotting was fantastic. Films like 'The 400 Blows' its better if you clear your mind's cache that you are sitting down to watch a famous Director. Then you find yourself caught up in the characters and let it take you where it should. I'll admit I went to see many of these films because I wanted to absorb Art in film, galleries, Theater and more but luckily I just fell in without feeling like I was fulfilling some character building obligation. Funny how it goes.
oh Chelsea, you had me at Wild Strawberries... ❤
She's a riot. I'm glad she discovered Girlfriends in there.
Wild Strawberries is one of my favorites.
Couldn’t help but think about Miller’s Crossing when she said joie de vivre.
I LOVE the direction of her comedy special "One of the Greats" - it is so funny in its cutaways and it made me wonder why so few comedians make the format of their specials funny. Pure joy!
One of the best comedy specials of, like... the last 20 years? Maybe that's too much. But it's very good. It's not on Netflix anymore, so I guess it reverted to her.
Now I kiiiinda want random comedians doing bits on classic, indie, and art movies/films that literally nobody else would understand but us. 🤣
Love your work...met you at Pete's in Greenpoint back in the day and you were so nice. Good luck on your filmmaking career. Good kids film The White Balloon..
Best one line review of Crumb ever lol
I watched The Red Balloon a lot as a kid, put the tape in myself. Underestimating what little kids can handle is such a cultural sin.
I wish she was cast in everything! She’s as solid in everything and elevates anything she’s in like Paul Rudd.
She’s married to arguably the best director of the last decade.
I used to work at an Art theater when some of these films were released and remember when we showed some of her picks.
So hilarious in Brooklyn 99. But that cast was something as well.❤❤❤
Loved her on Brooklyn Nine Nine!
„Wild strawberries - I love strawberries“ is like saying „breaking the waves? Hell yeah, I love surfing!“ 😄
Wow, great movie, right out of the gate. Miranda July is a treasure.
love what I have seen of Chelsea Peretti in this clip!
I just started watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Netflix, and now, I'm in love with you.
SHE picked 2 I own:
400 blows & Grey gardens
I like her sense of humor and definitely agree with her opinion about children in movies.
Miranda July is so underrated!!
Bergman film. No shredding!!🎉! I am a long time Ingmar fan since teen yrs and ANY TIME someone discovers Bergman is an exciting day. Its my fave Bergman film. No snobbery allowed. Also...400 Blows is beautiful and sad. Loooove it. I love her deadpan comments but so down to earth!! Love her.
Anytime we had a substitute teacher in elementary school they busted out Red Balloon. Was surprised that Chelsea hadn't seen it. Surprised when anyone hasn't seen it.
Excellent picks, I’d recommend Zwigoff’s Louie Bluie.
She's the most down to earth celeb in this series so far 😆
I just listened to her album!
"Thank you Criterion for 30 minutes of peace" 😆
I love that she picks things she hasn't seen yet.
These are so delightful.
comments are all so pro chelsea, but who are disliking the videos???
Probably negative comments are removed which is okay in this case because people comment some truly disgusting stuff on the closet pick videos. I swear Criterion has both a really amazing group of fans as well as the worst scum of the earth.
I hope she likes Girlfriends, its so good. Also, I think this is the first time I have seen all the movies (FILMS) chosen - so this is a very big day for me.
she’s really lovely
Is it 400 or 500 Blows? I forget.
One of the most gorgeous women has finally made it to the Criterion Closet 😍😍😍
This is why men are so disliked now
