Hey....great post, I did wonder when you started the drive where the review would end up but nice to hear you’ve finished on a very positive note! I pick up my first Porsche next week, a cayman718. I’m so looking forward to it, saved all my life and at 51 there’s one coming home. Nice you’ve included Mum and Dad! 👌🏼
Enky Nakamura as a former 6 owner of Boxster and Cayman S, 911 and Macan S - I would disagree. The only time the new 4 sucks is moving it slowly such as parking. On start up I always rev the bolts off it as I did with my 6 and 911's and Macan S. 718 engines lack at crawling speed a half decent engine note.
You are missing the best engine sound coming from a 6 cylinder!! It just howls!! The new GTS is a much faster car but the sound is horrendous to me, if I had a choice between the old GTS and the new GTS I would have a hard time picking the new GTS 🙁
I owned a 981 S, have driven the 981 GTS and own the 718 GTS 2.5 and the 718 is the best I’ve driven by far. The 981 sounds incredible, it is a memorable sound but the moment I drove the 718 I forgot about it lol. I’ve got turbo whisping, exhaust crackling, this things on a whole other level. The driving experience in a 981 vs a 718 isn’t even comparable, it’s like a lovely touring vessel versus a rocket ship.
I have a 981 GTS and freaking love it, the sound it makes is incredible.........but I tested the 719 S and was blown away at how quick it was and how much it pulled once the turbo kicked in. Porsche is just an incredible brand and the cayman to me is the best bang for your buck out there 👍🏻
@@bryanfuentesfr6 I'm 987 owner here and one guy i know got turbo kit on his 987 3.4L i think it makes 450hp. Serious bit of it especially compared to it's weight.
Good balanced review. I have the 718 Boxster S (in crayon too, gorgeous colour!). Absolutely love it. Having had V8 cars and a 911, I have some experience of engine sounds. Of course, a lot of it is personal preference but although nothing really compares to a V8, I much prefer the sound of the 718 to my 911. It sounds angrier somehow and even compared to the v8 makes a pretty decent growl at speed especially with sports mode on. If anything, it has far more character than the 6 cylinder which always sounded a bit like a wet fart to me (just my opinion, no offence meant but is how i described my 911 when I had it). As I say, each to their own, but I genuinely don’t understand the extreme comments about it. Just not my experience of my new car...it is so much fun to drive....
Great video although I wish the audio was a bit better as it was difficult to hear your voices. I have a 981 Boxster base in black with PDK that is now for sale. I really enjoyed it over the past 4 years of ownership but in the end, wanted much more torque. Once I test drove the 718, it was game over. The 718 is a rocket and super exhilarating to drive; especially the S and GTS variants which have loads more of both HP and torque (the most important number for most of us, imho) over the 981 variants. I watched many videos about the 718 and was initially put off by the negative comments of flat-6 purists who all raved about the performance and design of the 718 but got hung up on the exhaust note. Because of those videos, I was seriously considering ignoring the 718 and buying a 2016 Boxster S instead. BUT, I kept getting drawn back to test drive the 718, again and again. I ended up test driving the 718 three times; a 718 Boxster GTS with PDK, a 718 Cayman S with manual transmission and finally the 718 Boxster S with manual transmission which I ended up buying. I was simply just blown away by the performance and driving experience each and every time. It feels like I am driving a true performance race car. To quote another 718 enthusiast, "The car (718) is a corner-devouring, jet-engine propelled beast of a machine. Porsche has produced one phenomenal machine that incorporates the best from its stable of cars. The aggressive sounding, throaty exhaust let you (and those around you) know that there is something under the sleek design, and that something propels you from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds (Car & Driver instrumentation testing, 718 S or GTS variant). It achieves a top speed of 186 mph (Automobile Magazine-Autobahn speed test), and it is easily put to the test on a highway or snaking back road. This power is EASILY accessible, unlike the predecessor, that required you to ring its neck or beat the horse to death to achieve top acceleration in each gear. Honest Porsche dealers will tell you this is THE car to buy in the current Porsche line up, and that it will outperform most of the 911s." By the way, the 718 was selected as the 2017 World Performance Car of the Year over the Audi R8 and the McLaren 570S! Regarding the exhaust note, yes it is definitely different than the flat six 981 but as you said rewarding all the same. I do really like the pops and burbles that the 718 makes in sport mode. My 718 S is fitted with Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) and I quite like the sounds it makes. If you have or end up getting a 718 without PSE, you can always fit it with an after-market exhaust (I like the AWE Exhaust system with one side touring edition and the other side track edition) and easily make it sound awesome. I still have the 981 in my stable (it's up for sale) and it still looks beautiful but when it is next to the 718 (in jet black metallic which is an amazing color), it now looks really dated. It's a bit like being the uglier sister. Don't get me wrong, the 981 is still beautiful to look at but the 718 definitely steals the show now in every department (except arguably the sound department which is easily fixed) and especially in the looks department. I actually think the 718 looks better than all the 911 models with the exception of the GT3. Like you with your GTS, I specifically chose the 6-speed manual gear box to have more interaction with the car. The PDK is an amazing gearbox, but all one end's up doing with that is steer the car and push/pull the paddles. Not much skill level required for that. The manual transmission is just MUCH more rewarding from a driver's experience, imho. For those who are considering a Porsche Cayman or Boxster, my advice is GO TEST DRIVE a 718! You can now find 2017 models on the market with very low miles and that are still under warranty. Many have been CPO'd by Porsche which means you will have 4-5 years of warranty left. You will save a ton of money buying your Porsche this way.
@@borinvlogs Handling are of two different world. Just like I'm asking you to buy a Ferrari / Aston V8 instead of a Cayster if you are looking for really exciting sound.
I had a 981 GTS and yes the sound in that car is amazing - tested the 718 GTS today and I don’t think the sound is bad at all - people are comparing it to the 6 cylinder engine regarding the sound but people could compare it to other 4 cylinders on the marked today and I don’t know any that pulls and sound like the 718 GTS. It’s seriously quit and I think most people would love it if they went for a test drive.
Great review. I am really enjoying my new 718 Cayman with the 20" Carrera S black alloys; competition exhaust and manual box. Love the sound and the overall driving experience. It's a real sports car.
Brilliant video, honest opinion. Watching this feels like just sitting in the pub having a genuine chat about cars. Coffee percolator Time... Oh god, I'm never going the be able to listen to a sports exhaust in the same way again :p
Totally agree with your conclusion. Better car, and it still sounds great, unless you are hung up on older Porsche sounds, but they are a thing of the past as all the road cars go to turbo.
They are something else aren’t they, people will start to understand one day - the press have been so harsh on them, I think they wrote them off in their head before they even drove them because of the 4 cylinder
Nutts On Cars It was not the fastest car ever because of the famous super tall gearing, but I think it’s more involving in some aspects than the new line. Overall though, the modern ones have improved so much that it’s a better car on balance - it’s just missing that emotional resonance for me.
Nutts On Cars it was quick, but that engine was awful, couldn't wait to get back in a 6 cylinder, also had 918 bucket seats which were uncomfortable on the run

James Smith Yeah all good stuff mate, yep will probably go with the PPF on the front bumper, hood and mirrors. Let’s just drive then hard when the first 700 miles are out of the way according to my Porsche centre 👊
thanks for the honest review, sometimes I think journalists have to find a talking point so it was good to get a honest look at whether the sound, by itself, is good or bad, and it sounded ok to me. No use complaining about the 6 cyl, because thats like comparing a 6 to an 8.. good insight too that the cayman is the easier to work with over bigger machinery on A/B roads. Do you know if the tail lights were tinted there, couldn't really tell, and also was that the high gloss black front and window surrounds or standard?
And the debate rages on! Such a tough call but like the questions you asked to tease out a conclusion. I owned a 981GTS for a year and that sound was something else. There's a reason car companies (for better or for worse) pipe exhaust sound into their cabins through the speakers. I'm in a 987.2 Spyder now and love it except for missing the 981 soundtrack. A SOUL performance exhaust is shortly going to remedy that. Reality is, these cars are impeccable and anyone would be lucky to drive them regularly. Cheers for the vid!
Thank you for the review. I'm one of those who's hung up on the sound. I'm certainly not a fan of what turbos do to the sound, and will be left behind until manufacturers figure out how to get the desired fuel economy from a NA motor. Plus, turbo motors generally do not actually achieve the numbers they promise, because to get that wonderful power, you have to rev it, which significantly increases the fuel usage. How much lag is in the turbo for this model? On the twin turbo models, they seem to have made the delivery smooth and lag-less, but on single turbo cars, you have to trade off power for a bit of lag, even with the variable vane technology in this model.
Almost Lag-less I would say. Plus, if you are experiencing serious turbo lag in turbo cars it means you are lazy to put it in the right gear. It's 2020s not 1980s now. ;)
@@lolowong439 To be fair, I *am* stuck in that timeframe. I love the sound, feel, and responsiveness of a big V8. The fuel economy? Not so much. One of these days, I'll go and try one of these turbo cars to see for myself. That said, the market went from crazy to stupid, so I'm flat out not going to pay more for a used car than a new one, and new cars are going over MSRP right now. I can wait.
Of course, the Cayman GTS is still an amazing car in every way, including the sound, in my opinion, but that's way down on my list of concerns in any case. I care about overall driving performance and the 718 sets the bar in that dept.
Are the carbon seats a euro/uk option only? I have asked a dealer here in the U.S. and they couldn't let me spec a GTS with the carbon seats. Thanks. -Z-
@@richnick1911 It's great. I sold mine at around 11k miles. I wouldn't pay anything over 75k for it though. Also depends on what you want to do with the car. For me if ask me to choose again, I'd buy a 18 cayman s with a 6 speed instead.. Basically the same engine and can be tuned to the same power level like the gts reliably while not breaking the bank..
@@youtubeDaddy525 this one is a six speed. I'm trying to get it for 70,000. The most I'll pay is 72,000. The Porsche dealer will give it a two year, unlimited mile warranty which is a plus.
Every journalists loves to knock the sound of the 718. It’s very easy to resolve. Purchase an aftermarket exhaust for less than than the Porsche sport exhaust. I installed a Fabspeed cat back, which made my engine sound like a small block V8. Even my Porsche dealer said it sounds like a Porsche should....and a lot better than you hear on UA-cam videos. The 718 is a much better car than the earlier Caymans. So stop knocking a superior car and provide solutions just because you want have something to complain about. As we Americans say “fake news “.
I think you should spent longer with a manual 981 gts, as a purist to me the 6 cylinder it a better engine which makes it more involving for the driver. If you’re spending at least £60k do you want a 4 cylinder car. The new 718 spyder/gt4 is going to be a six cylinder for good reason. The cayman chassis is already compromised as it starts as a boxster (cayman and boxster very similar weights) and now that it has lost the 6 pot it really has lost it’s selling point to me. The new alpine seem a lot more driver focused even though it has an auto. There also does seem to be a lot of fake noise pumped into the cabin.
Mothelawn the first Maybe they could have put a defined version turbocharged 3.0 flat six, it’s just a real shame it’s lost the 2 cylinders it’s really lost its appeal to me. I know it’s a really good car performance wise but it seems to lack so much character compared with the old. Hopefully on the next one they’ll change it back to a 6 but I doubt it. They’ve spent to much developing it.
Great review mate, laughing at the skinny wife banter! So torn on this car, there's one going at the right price at the moment and I need to get out of the M2. But the M2 day to day sounds more exciting I think. That car definitely sounds better in the higher revs actually which is something other reviews haven't really highlighted.
Finally a review of the new 718 GTS ! Well that’s what I thought but no facts, figures a look inside at the interior or possible spec options just a rich kid having a joy ride with his mum
Well said moto I agree with you ! The title of the clip is Porsche GTS review why call it that if your not going to do it ?? Plus if anyone’s a Dickhead it’s him for driving like an idiot on country lanes with him mum in the car !!!!!
Didn't the original 718 have a 4 cylinder flat engine? So porsche is staying true 2 it's history of the car, I'd b fine with the sound, if anything it would make it unique
I'm looking for the all new 718 cayman gt4, that's my dream car .the gt4's driving performance and the sound must be batter ,but the question is gt4 will come to china or not. i wish the master of the Porsche can read this and the answer is yes. haha~
The excitement of power wears off. The responsiveness and smoothness stays. Post another video after spending a year with it. You're still on honeymoon there.
Will you regret swapping the boxster for the cayman forget the noises just think about the wind in your hair. You have got the 911 do you need another roof with the gts.
Nutts On Cars I bet it doesn't. Porsche purist's went nuts apparently. As a previous Subaru owner I've just bought a RS3 rather than a 718 because they went flat 4. For me a Porsche should have 6 cylinders. Nice looking car though.
The title is "Is The Sound A Problem?" Well, I don't care too much for the sound of the Cayman GTS, but it's not as bad as the overall sound quality of the video. I had the volume turned up all the way, but I could hardly hear what you or your old man were saying over the background noise. You seemed to be mumbling all the time. You need to use separate microphones attached to your clothing (eg, lapel of your shirt). If you make continue to make these videos as you do now, you will lose subscribers, not that you have many now!
In the natural aspirated flat 6’s found in previous models there were 9 different soundtracks depending on rpm. In the 718 there are just 2 types of sounds. Horrid! Do not buy a 718!
Aaron Ming I test drove the 718S but I was totally disappointed with the engine sound. It's true the 718 has more HP and torque but it did not convince me to trade my Cayman S 981. IMO with few mods I can easily have as much HP as the 718. In addition part do the enjoyment on driving the V6 is the symphony of the engine sound. Not to my surprise Porsche will retain the V6 of the upcoming 718 GT4.
Ed P981CaymanS you’re right. But the new gt4 could have a turbocharged flat 6 from the current 911’s Definitely keep your 981 👍 I’ve got a 987 Boxster and a 991 C2S and they both have the signature Porsche boxer flat 6! It’s not a v6

On the twin turbo models, they seem to have made the delivery smooth and lag-less, but on single turbo cars, you have to trade off power for a bit of lag, even with the variable vane technology in this model.
same, got an M2 at the moment & after driving the S I was put off. Certainly with the M Performance Exhaust... but, I still come back to it :S
Gees mate you’re right, the weather mate, it’s shite! The 718 Cayman GTS, brilliant.
Are the carbon seats a euro/uk option only? I have asked a dealer here in the U.S. and they couldn't let me spec a GTS with the carbon seats. Thanks.

I had an 2018 boxster gts and I just realized how similar it sounds to my 01 Impreza 2.5rs….. and I love both…
It’s different but still a great noise
Looking at a 2018 GTS Boxster now. 11,000 miles. Thoughts or suggestions?
Can you do an review on the 718 gts talking about the interior and the body?
Every journalists loves to knock the sound of the 718.
It’s very easy to resolve. Purchase an aftermarket exhaust for less than than the Porsche sport exhaust. I installed a Fabspeed cat back, which made my engine sound like a small block V8. Even my Porsche dealer said it sounds like a Porsche should....and a lot better than you hear on UA-cam videos. The 718 is a much better car than the earlier Caymans. So stop knocking a superior car and provide solutions just because you want have something to complain about. As we Americans say “fake news “.
The internal exhaust noise in a 718 is fake...look it up #BMW
Cant hear a word you say
I've got a 718 GTS on order in Carrera white - what colour is the one in this video? Difficult to tell.
Great colour - thanks for the quick reply
Couldn't really hear the part on Carrera T vs this much because of the road noise 😔
The engine sound is louder than your voices in the video. So I guess it’s not that bad..
I like the video however the audio was a bit low. Maybe tweak it a bit to get more volume or speak up next time .
Great video though .
The GTS looks proper exotic, great review. .."Yeshua / Jesus is the way "
Jdor D not the only way, huckleberry.
Didn't the original 718 have a 4 cylinder flat engine? So porsche is staying true 2 it's history of the car, I'd b fine with the sound, if anything it would make it unique
I'm looking for the all new 718 cayman gt4, that's my dream car .the gt4's driving performance and the sound must be batter ,but the question is gt4 will come to china or not. i wish the master of the Porsche can read this and the answer is yes. haha~
Hell yeah brother
Sounds like a Jap Spec Scooby... bit of a fail really .. wont be too expensive to synthesise a flat 6 sound inside the car. Sorted
The excitement of power wears off. The responsiveness and smoothness stays. Post another video after spending a year with it. You're still on honeymoon there.
Yes definitely the sound is a problem, not from the car but your video. Hope you get it right next time.
Will you regret swapping the boxster for the cayman forget the noises just think about the wind in your hair. You have got the 911 do you need another roof with the gts.
除了只會說排氣聲 981全敗 要聲音去買2018 MUSTANG GT V8 便宜又好聽
I think it's nothing to do with sound and more to do with the stigma of another brand famous for flat 4 engines.
Nutts On Cars I bet it doesn't. Porsche purist's went nuts apparently. As a previous Subaru owner I've just bought a RS3 rather than a 718 because they went flat 4. For me a Porsche should have 6 cylinders. Nice looking car though.
Ian Clark RS3 will still depreciate faster than the Porsche flat four
The title is "Is The Sound A Problem?" Well, I don't care too much for the sound of the Cayman GTS, but it's not as bad as the overall sound quality of the video. I had the volume turned up all the way, but I could hardly hear what you or your old man were saying over the background noise. You seemed to be mumbling all the time. You need to use separate microphones attached to your clothing (eg, lapel of your shirt). If you make continue to make these videos as you do now, you will lose subscribers, not that you have many now!
Your mum's right, it sounds like a 'coffee percolator'. Nice car though and very quick.
In the natural aspirated flat 6’s found in previous models there were 9 different soundtracks depending on rpm. In the 718 there are just 2 types of sounds. Horrid! Do not buy a 718!
The flat 6 sounds like a v12 at some point in the rev range
718 > 981
Oh, Subaru er.. Porsche
The 718 sounds like rubbish.....pity.
