Americans should just take caffeine pills if they don't actually like coffee. They wouldn't need to worry about spilling a gigantic thermos on themselves while trying to commute an hour to work or going about their day. There is no real coffee culture here because of our weird habits.
We have one also here in Italy. Alessandro Cecchi Paone. A tv host, and clearly gay guy, who have made some really great cultural programs about history and science. He was really appreciated here in Italy, still not on the top 3 podium of best divulgators of Italy, but still beloved. You know, here in Italy those professors that goes on tv teaching history or science are treated like demigods, stars. The first one right now is Professor Barbero, beloved mostly by our young people. Then there's the couple father-son Piero and Alberto Angela, unfortunately mr. Piero passed out few years ago. Yet he's still remembered with love and appreciation. Then there are the lesser gods, like Alessandro Cecchi Paone and some others. Artists here have even made songs in honor of these people. For Barbero, a medieval-style metal band have made a track that is quite funny.

I work at a café and one time an american family came in and order latte. They all insisted on getting 4 pumps of vanilla syrup in their latte except one girl. She wanted 8 pumps of vanilla and 2 of hazelnut….. I recreated that drink for myself after they were gone (but just half the size) and I had sugar taste stuck in my mouth for almost two hours after 🤢
Wait but how big was the latte? Maybe they were expecting you to make a 950ml latte for them like they’re used to, so they sugar amount would have been bearable.

I live in Australia and work in an Italian restaurant. Once a week we have people coming for Italian lessons and when they finish they order coffees. One of them decided to order an americano, but, translating literally, he came to me and ordered a “Lungo Nero”… I had to explain him what “lungo nero” means in Italian and why you should never ask for it in Italy. 😅
By no surprise whatsoever, Milan has Starbucks. I wont lie, the actual establishment is stunning, but the clientele are exactly who you’d expect it to be.
It is also an italianized version, quite different compared to the average American Starbucks. In any case, nobody felt the necessity of having one of those places around...
That s so interesting, because in Vienna (Austria) there is also a big culture about coffe, but it is very common that you sit in a Kaffehaus (cafe) for hours with ordering nothing but one espresso
I studied in a small town in Tuscany for a semester years ago, before the Starbucks revolution had fully reached Europe, and I have memories of ordering a latte with "all the sugar" every day. The old couple at the café by my apartment probably thought I was deranged. They usually just patted my head and gave me pastries I was not allowed to pay for. In other words, do you think my husband would mind if I left him for a few years to recreate that life experience?

I visited that Starbucks in 2018 and I'd be surprised if tourists would actually buy something there considering how easy/cheap it is to get good coffee literally everywhere in Italy.

Amazing! Having a caffe at the bar in Italy is my favorite thing. While traveling in northern Italy my wife and I discovered Caffe Musetti. It's now our favorite. Every time I take a shot it brings me right back to the bar in Italy!
My nona drank at least one full pot of coffee per day...she would bring a giant thermos to drink in 95°+ heat while working outdoors. Not content to drink coffee alone, she used to make me warm lattes in my baby bottle. Yes, I drank coffee from my infancy.

Well, make an effort to exclusively speak only Italian with them, others will speak English with them. Don't worry, they will speak both languages perfectly as long as you stick to one language and not mix it with other one. Keep it pure or they will pick up your bad habits.

About the Frappuccino: some years ago, Starbucks announced it was going to open a branch in Italy. Somebody asked Ernesto Illy, the padrone of Illy Caffe, if he was worried. He replied, with typical Italian asperity, “Starbucks does not sell coffee. Starbucks sells milk.” And BTW, I live a few blocks from you in the West Village. Why do I have to travel to Ultima Thule, or worse, Indianapolis, to see you perform, per caritá?
I was a Starbucks barista on Long Island, my cafe was one of the 2 acceptable cafes on the entire island. I made it a habit of at least adding doppio espresso ristretto shots to every frapp

Greetings from Greece, land of frappé coffee (literally the most popular "breakfast" +cigarettes). Personally, even though I think espresso is the best coffee, I don't like the traditional way of drinking it. I prefer to drink it americano style (hot or iced, we call it "freddo espresso" here). That way, at least, you have an excuse for not getting things done 😛
I like how everyone jokes about Italians not working, and nothing being done, and living "la dolce vita", etc... meanwhile we are always among the first 10 global strongest economies, with an actual size/population that is a fraction of giants like the US/Russia/China/Brazil/Canada. There is Starbucks in Milan. It's nothing like the Starbucks in America. It's located in an old Post Office or Train Station. I forget. No, Cappuccino after eleven/noon is due to the milk. Italians follow a Mediterranean diet. Health is very important to them. Milk has to do with digestion. Better digested in the morning hours. Lastly, coffee is served - cafes or at home you drink with a glass/cup of water. You are suppose to drink a little bit of water before the coffee and then finish the glass of water after the coffee.
lavazza have started selling instant americano here in the uk, the can has the text in italian as well as english, i can't work out if it's italian for marketing purposes or if they actually sell this in italy

There is Starbucks in Milan. It's nothing like the Starbucks in America. It's located in an old Post Office or Train Station. I forget. No, Cappuccino after eleven/noon is due to the milk. Italians follow a Mediterranean diet. Health is very important to them. Milk has to do with digestion. Better digested in the morning hours. Lastly, coffee is served - cafes or at home you drink with a glass/cup of water. You are suppose to drink a little bit of water before the coffee and then finish the glass of water after the coffee.
Every single coffee drinking person, outside of Italy, especially in Melbourne Australia, should watch this and learn from it.😉😆
