On wearing the hijab | Narjes Jaafar and Sally Beydoun | TEDxLAU

  • The hijab or veil has become one of the most discussed pieces of clothing in modern times. One cannot read the news without stumbling upon a story of discrimination related to what a woman was wearing at some specific time, and things seem to be getting worse.
We often judge people before we hear their stories, and this is what Sally Beydoun and Narjes Jaafar are trying to battle. Narjes, a second year medical student, and Sally, a fifth year pharmacy student, are not at TEDxLAU to present a drug that will make people less judgmental and empathize before they jump to conclusions. They are actually going to put their medical background behind and join forces to present their personal journeys with the hijab.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is a BEAUTIFUL presentation. I love how they juxtaposed the two opposing choices in such a respectful way via a back and forth discussion with each other. Simply lovely. We could all learn to do this more with people who differ from us. I am putting this on facebook. Thank you for sharing your perspectives.

I wore hijab because in my family they used to tell us that women who don't cover up will be suspended from their lashes! And they will burn in flames after death! That made me grow up with a weak personality and low self love and esteem because I wasn't convinced that I should do this or follow that and at the same time I couldn't take my own decisions ..Growing in a muslim family who doesn't understand islam as it should be understood is the worst. now I'm trying to find the path that's most real and true to myself it's not easy but I'll try

So did christian men and women. They have been terrorized like this during 19 centuries living in other eyes, judgment and fear of tyrannic God.. Thank free thinking, Giordano Bruno, and other philosophers . We now can choose , Laïc system is a relief since 1905 it took us 68 years to free our brains from inside chains of foolishness.

It's a personal choice to wear it or not.
I started wearing hijab since my first day in college (med school) and it was my choice, no one forced me to wear it, my parents even didn't want me to wear it since they were thinking that I was still young and my older sister doesn't wear it, but at the end they accepted my choice
What I want to say is that not all hijabis are forced to wear hijab!! why is it so hard for you guys to understand?
    Sorry for my bad English...

with your personal experience regarding Hijab it seems like you believe it to be a personal choice. but in the eyes of our Creator , the muslim women are suppose to wear it. I mean in Islam, it has not been made an option for the women. you see there is this difference.

Omair Enam there is a choice of doing good or bad. There are many things we do that we are not supposed to do and it’s natural. We just can’t stop doing wrong stuff. We shouldn’t judge anyone based on what they do unless they are harming us or the society

It's not personal choice. It's obligatory for all women.we can't simply say this is my choice and i wish i don’t wear. What if the decision come jahannam/hellfire even you bring lot of good deeds, prayer, sadaka, fasting etc?If we don't wear hijab which is the obligated for us it might be happen with us.
Remember hijab doesn’t mean just cover head and hair by a piece of cloth and wear tight fit pants t-shirt. Covering all body head to bottom by lose cloth which cannot understand the part of body.

What we have to remember is that the hijab means covering, not the headscarf. I am a Muslim, but I do not wear the headscarf. Even though I don't wear the headscarf, I still dress modestly, not wearing any form of clothing that exposes too much skin. For me personally, modest dressing includes a t-shirt, up to at least elbow length, as well as knee-length trousers, skirts and dresses. As well as this, (my own choice!), I don't wear make - up or make my hair look fancy as this is something I've had no interest in whatsover and because by not wearing make up or having my hair a certain way, people don't fixate on something superficial. Instead, it is my personality and intelligence (I hope!) that seems to win people over.

Beautiful!! Thank you for expressing what closed minded people need to hear. All people should have the freedom to make any life choices that "work" for them without hurting others. And, most especially, women need to support each other's choices regarding education, marriage, child rearing, employment and reproduction. The premise of our great nation is to strive for respect and opportunity for everyone.

Technically speaking the term "Hijab" actually means decency or respectful and it applies both to men and women, the men have to do hijab as in be decent and respectful towards women as in not to look at her in a perverted manner or out of lust or desire or as a piece of meat and to wear modest clothing and not dress up like a stripper or a porn star out in public and the same goes for women.
The thing you're talking of is just a veil.

I have so many friends that don't have what society considered "perfect" body, fuller lips, skin color,etc...so those friends feel less beautiful than everyone else. Are they really not beautiful? They are so beautiful but they allow society own the say rather you're beautiful..or not. However by putting on my hijab, it tell me that I'm different from what society expects me to be :). Therefore, I don't have to worry about the standards society puts for me to follow.

Actually if you read the Hadiths you will realize that the Veiling was the idea of Omar bin Al Khattab, the companion of Mohammed. One day while he was vising Mohammed he saw Sauda in the open attending to the call of nature. He came back and told Mohammed that he should ask their wives to cover up as many people visit him and some of them may have bad intentions towards them if they saw her face and body. Immediately the next day the verse of Veiling was revealed exactly as Omar had mentioned.(hadiths of Bukhari). If it was not because of OMAR BIN AL KHATTAB , muslim woman would not be veiling themselves. It was not the idea of the prophet.Volume 6, Book 60, Number 10: Narrated Anas: Umar said, "I agreed with Allah in three things," or said, "My Lord agreed with me in three things. I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Would that you took the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.' I also said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Good and bad persons visit you! Would that you ordered the Mothers of the believers to cover themselves with veils.' So the Divine Verses of Al-Hijab (i.e. veiling of the women) were revealed. I came to know that the Prophet had blamed some of his wives so I entered upon them and said, 'You should either stop (troubling the Prophet ) or else Allah will give His Apostle better wives than you.' When I came to one of his wives, she said to me, 'O 'Umar! Does Allah's Apostle haven't what he could advise his wives with, that you try to advise them?' " Thereupon Allah revealed:-- "It may be, if he divorced you (all) his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah).." (66.5)

Funny how the same people are saying Hijabi women are oppressed are just commenting on the other woman's body and appearance. I too wish that as a woman my body didn't define me and I would be respected for me even if I wasn't fully covered. However this is clearly not a reality. All the men who complain about hijabis being oppressed are not feminists? they're simply sexists who don't like the freedom being covered gives a woman. They don't like us to have a choice. They do't like us not being sexualised. They don't like to be forced to see us as a person, rather than an object. Respect to both women, to freedom of choice and all the open-minded people.

Of course I and many people can and should, this is not my point. What I am trying to say is unless a woman is covered certain people, especially men will look at her and as a piece of ass and tits etc. Wearing a hijab forces you, whether you agree with it or not to respect the person for who they are and not sexualise them.

women "should" NOT do anything. Especially to gain respect, certainly not. Everyone deserves respect no matter what they're wearing. But if they feel like they're freer and more respected covering whatever the f they want then they should have the right to without being judged, hated on and criticised. As I said, I support both women by their decision. I am simply stating my opinion about why the hijab might be significant for many. And, to them, is a symbol of freedom rather than oppression.

I wish the issue of whether a woman should put a cloth on her head or not was not even a topic of discussion. We should be concerned about solving poverty, malnutrition, and access to water, not wasting time regulating what a woman chooses to wear or not wear. Not sure why, but I get the feeling that - wearing a hijab does indicate that you feel that if you don't wear a one then you are being immodest, or vulgar or drawing attention to other parts of you. I would totally believe the claim that it forces people to focus on just you instead of everything else, only if everyone, both men and women were required to dress in a uniform, like in old British schools. Where the purpose of wearing a uniform was to remove inequality among students and remove distractions of varying colors and accessories that could indicate richness and poorness for example, and leading to sole focus on the student's character through uniformity. Saying the hijab defines you is like saying the make you wear defines you. In my humble opinion, material things don't define you, only you and your actions define you, regardless of the clothes and accessories you wear.

I find this disturbing, regarding talk about Muslims and the Islamic world. That there is a push toward the idea that Muslims are an ethnicity and that somehow Arabs have a monopoly on the religion of Islam. Everyone who is an advocate of Islam or speaks to interpret Islam in recent years looks the same way which I- being an African-American from an Islamic background, which many of us are-find disturbing. Islam is not an Ethnicity. It is a religion, interpreted through culture. The problem the US has with certain majority Muslim countries is a political problem. Am I wrong?

I come from an African background myself and grew up in London. in my year Group alone there are Chinese, Morocco, Somali, nigerian, Pakistani, Algerian, Jamaican muslims. so no muslims are not an ethnicity. but we are one ummah regardless of what are cultural differences are. so in a sense we are (or ment to be anyways) one unit if that makes any sense.

Many women who wear the hijab are independent, strong women, not oppressed or forced to wear it. However, the notion of covering "the adornments" to not evoke lust in men should also be debated! And we can be open and tolerant and still wanting to dicuss why it should be any woman's responsability to cover herself to avoid creepy behaviour from men. And why is there a correlation between a state with bad women's rights and the amount of body parts the woman needs to cover? Why is it that the burka is something Taliban and ISIS wanted the women to wear? Is there NO common idea shared between covering the hair and the whole face? Why are there more women wearing the niqab in Saudi Arabia (poor women's rights) than in Jordan? Say what you want, but the hijab is not a symbol of women's rights.

no one mentioned why we wear the hijab? The hijab is not only a scarf. It is covering your whole body in a respectfil manner. Its funny how its difficult to accept someone covered ip but someone walking around half naked is acceptable. What does the statue of the virgin Mary look like? Think about it. In the end it is a question of respect for any choice taken to wear or not. Allah jugdes us based on our good intentions.

mariam Guilbeault I think the issue is that there is not a history in Western civilization where women were, or are, forced to walk around half naked. To say that wearing a hijab can be a personal choice and nothing more reminds me of white southeners that choose to fly the confederate flag and say that it now represents their white southern pride, nothing more, as though it can be divorced from its oppressive, centuries long history, when of course, it can't.

This is so dumb. The girl who affirms her personal choice to wear the Hijab, tells you that she grew attached to the idea of wearing it, when she was asked why she wasn't wearing one, and don't come tomorrow without one, at a Muslim religious camp. Then even after she left, was reminded to conform and obey, by other members of her peer group. But of course, it's her 'choice' to wear it. There are 3 verses in the Quran that mention the way a woman should dress. None of the versus, names a hijab (barrier or screen), as a part of a woman's recommended attire.

Well I guess I'll add my 2 cents worth to this:
    1. I find the whole head scarf thing quite stylish if a little impractical in a warm climate
2.I find the Ned Kelly Burqa look rather depressing and repressive and I'm at a loss to understand why anyone in their right mind would wear one without significant coercion unless they're planning a criminal act. Note my exact words her so as not to draw the wrong conclusions as to what I'm saying.
    3. Humans are social animals that tend to follow social norms with the people/circles they identify with. Therefore there is a strong suggestion that willingly wearing clothes or adopting appearance that identifies you in a certain way is really reflecting your position on things. Have a think about it. Again please carefully read my words so as to correctly understand what I'm saying.
All of this is a perspective and an understanding based on known behavioural links to personality, not a declaration that for example all Burqa wearer are criminals or such tripe.

why they argue abt hijaab is becoz they wear only a piece of cloth on their head with pair of tight jeans and tshirts which definetly does not make any difference between women wearing it or not wearing it,,,,so better to take it offf because it looks like a custom instead of necessity of wearing ,,,like wearing a head gear....what hijaab truly means is covering ur whole body with a loose garment from head to toe and sometimes due to environmentt around u must cover ur face as well so u may be saved from harassments....i live in india and here non muslim girls cover their faces even in night when they go out...just becoz of harassment they face everyday.

    A WOMAN'S DILEMMA
I wear the hijab for fashion - Islam is my passion.
Vanity knows no pain - Is Islam full of restrains
Who should I blame for this state of dilemma
I know that I have a brain but they say I have gone insane
When for the sake of fashion I take off my hijab & abaya.

Smithpolly in Quran it said not to force things on others and that includes women the women aren't forced but if some are wearing it and not believe in it that is mostly because they feel that they would be socially accepted wearing it as women. Even in Saudi Arabia many women just wear the Abaya and not their hijab because they think that they are "too young"

It would help a lot if well educated and self confident ladies as these two would speak more often like this. Still I do not understand why women voluntarily wear a headscarf if not to protect against the climate, and why men who can't resist the beauty of women don't simply stay at home or wear a blindfold, and what all this has to do with god or religion, not to speak about real spirituality. For me it's simply patriachrism, certainly one of the biggest issues on this planet.
But it's good to see that all kind of social repression (religion, beauty cult, ...) does not hold back such great women on their way to more freedom and influence in the society and the world - as the world needs educated, open minded and powerful women.

The hijab is not only a headscarf, to adhere to it appropriately is to refrain from sexual indecency, to allow a man to look at you with respect and not mere sexual desire. Hijab means barrier, a barrier from evil doings, something that reminds us of our lord almighty as he is the one to tell us to wear it, not men. I myself was not told by any man to wear it, I choose to wear because my lord tells me to wear, its not simply for the men, its me telling my creator that I submit to him. Its a sign which binds me with all of my other muslim sisters in islam, when I walk past any of them, they smile at me, we knowling share an open secret. I cannot express in any words my love for the hijab, men and women alike respect me so much more when i have it on. My hijab gives me honor, makes me feel secure and I wouldn't take it off for all that is on the earth. Now please don't tell me about the women in afghanistan or saudi who are oppressed by it, because that isn't the hijab, or the religion, it is the men that claim to follow that religion, and in its name they commit atrocities that are against the same religion they claim to follow.
Quran, chapter 2 verse 256: "There is no complusion in religion"
hope you get what I mean, don't mean to offend, just clearing up misconceptions. peace and love sister :)

Noreen Khan Your reply sounds reasonable and reflected to me, though I don't share your concepts and still feel you worship a patriarchic god / religious cult, originating in patriarchic thinking. I don't believe that a visible symbol is needed (which also limits the freedom of action of only women again), and which is pretty exclusive. Everyone should restrain herself/himself from doing evil by her/his heart's decision, with or without gods or veils or whatever concept or symbol. I think I understand what you mean, but your hijab cult still belongs to the realm of thought, emotions and outwardness, doesn't it? Likewise the whole discussion about hijabs and other outwardness is driven by our egos and we should simply give it up. Peace, sister.

its ok till u cover the head but once you cover your face it becomes suspicious because your face is the simplest way to recognise you and if you choose to cover it up it naturally makes people to think that u have something to hide or u have committed something sinful that requires you to hide your identity from the world.

no i don't recommend men to cover their faces rather i sayin nobody should hide their identity by covering their face, because firstly it makes u look shady and if that's not enough it reduces the importance of ur identity by hiding it from the world. And i dont have to recommend men to cover their faces they do it already while robbing banks or comitting other crimes.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful”
    [al-Ahzaab 33:59]
    With regard to the Ahaadeeth:
1 - It was narrated from Safiyyah bint Shaybah that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) used to say: When these words were revealed - “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” - they took their izaars (a kind of garment) and tore them from the edges and covered their faces with them.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4481. The following version was narrated by Abu Dawood (4102):
May Allaah have mercy on the Muhaajir women. When Allaah revealed the words “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)”, they tore the thickest of their aprons (a kind of garment) and covered their faces with them.
Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari: There is a report of Ibn Abi Haatim via ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Uthmaan ibn Khaytham from Safiyyah that explains that. This report says: We mentioned the women of Quraysh and their virtues in the presence of ‘Aa’ishah and she said: “The women of Quraysh are good, but by Allaah I have never seen any better than the women of the Ansaar, or any who believed the Book of Allaah more strongly or had more faith in the Revelation. When Soorat al-Noor was revealed - “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” - their menfolk came to them and recited to them what had been revealed, and there was not one woman among them who did not go to her apron, and the following morning they prayed wrapped up as if there were crows on their heads. It was also narrated clearly in the report of al-Bukhaari narrated above, where we see ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who was so knowledgeable and pious, praising them in this manner and stating that she had never seen any women who believed the Book of Allaah more strongly or had more faith in the Revelation. This clearly indicates that they understood from this verse - “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)” - that it was obligatory to cover their faces and that this stemmed from their belief in the Book of Allaah and their faith in the Revelation. It also indicates that women’s observing hijab in front of men and covering their faces is an act of belief in the Book of Allaah and faith in the Revelation. It is very strange indeed that some of those who claim to have knowledge say that there is nothing in the Qur’aan or Sunnah that says that women have to cover their faces in front of non-mahram men, even though the Sahaabi women did that in obedience to the command of Allaah in His Book, out of faith in the Revelation, and that this meaning is also firmly entrenched in the Sunnah, as in the report from al-Bukhaari quoted above. This is among the strongest evidence that all Muslim women are obliged to observe hijab.
    Adwa’ al-Bayaan, 6/594-595.
2 - It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to go out at night to al-Manaasi’ (well known places in the direction of al-Baqee’) to relieve themselves and ‘Umar used to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “Let your wives be veiled.” But the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do that. Then one night Sawdah bint Zam’ah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), went out at ‘Isha’ time and she was a tall woman. ‘Umar called out to her: “We have recognized you, O Sawdah!” hoping that hijab would be revealed, then Allaah revealed the verse of hijab.
    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 146; Muslim, 2170.
3 - It was narrated from Ibn Shihaab that Anas said: I am the most knowledgeable of people about hijab. Ubayy ibn Ka’b used to ask me about it. When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) married Zaynab bint Jahsh, whom he married in Madeenah, he invited the people to a meal after the sun had risen. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat down and some men sat around him after the people had left, until the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood up and walked a while, and I walked with him, until he reached the door of ‘Aa’ishah’s apartment. Then he thought that they had left so he went back and I went back with him, and they were still sitting there. He went back again, and I went with him, until he reached the door of ‘Aa’ishah’s apartment, then he came back and I came back with him, and they had left. Then he drew a curtain between me and him, and the verse of hijab was revealed.
    Al-Bukhaari, 5149; Muslim, 1428.
4 - It was narrated from ‘Urwah that ‘Aa’ishah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray Fajr and the believing women would attend (the prayer) with him, wrapped in their aprons, then they would go back to their houses and no one would recognize them.
    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 365; Muslim, 645.
5 - It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The riders used to pass by us when we were with the Messenger of Allaah (S) in ihraam, and when they drew near to us we would lower our jilbabs from our heads over our faces, then when they had passed we would uncover them again.
Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1833; Ibn Maajah, 2935; classed as saheeh by Ibn Khuzaymah (4,203) and by al-Albaani in Kitaab Jilbaab al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah.
6 - It was narrated that Asma’ bint Abi Bakr said: We used to cover our faces in front of men.
Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah, 4/203; al-Haakim, 1/624. He classed it as saheeh and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. It was also classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Jilbaab al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah.
7 - It was narrated that ‘Aasim al-Ahwaal said: We used to enter upon Hafsah bint Sireen who had put her jilbab thus and covered her face with it, and we would say to her: May Allaah have mercy on you. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And as for women past childbearing who do not expect wedlock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment” [al-Noor 24:60]. And she would say to us: What comes after that? We would say: “But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them”. And she would say: That is confirming the idea of hijab.
    Narrated by al-Bayhaqi, 7/93.
