The Muslims You Cannot See | Sahar Habib Ghazi | TEDxStanford

  • As an American Muslim journalist, Sahar often finds herself being "othered" because she doesn't fit into popular perception of what Muslims are, or, what she calls, the "Muslim box" built by Hollywood, the news industry and politicians. In this talk, she explains what being Muslim means to her and how the world's 1.7 billion Muslims are "so vast, varied, and intersectional that they cannot possibly fit into a box." Sahar also warns that powerful privileged people use this box to build structural Islamophobia. As the mother of a 4-year-old daughter and a former Stanford Knight Fellow, Ghazi says it is time to change the conversation about what it means to be Muslim today.
Sahar Habib Ghazi is the managing editor at Global Voices, a trusted international community of 1400 editors, writers, and translators who report on untold stories in more than 167 countries. Ghazi has lived half her life in the U.S. and half in Pakistan, reporting for The New York Times, DawnNews TV and Geo News TV. In 2009, she produced The Disposable Ally, the first documentary series on U.S. and Pakistan relations. Ghazi was a Knight Journalism fellow at Stanford University in 2011. As a multi-media journalist, editor and podcaster, Ghazi aims to disrupt unjust dominant narratives about marginalized communities.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The other thing about women in politics, in Islamic countries is that, these countries are not democratic in any sense. Therefore, certain families hold much of the emotional appeal, hence they rule. You won’t have a Benazir Bhutto as the prime minister of Pakistan if she was not the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was the military dictator of Pakistan in the 1970’s. She was elected in a pseudo democratic system which was backed by the army. These things are an eyewash for the world media. Women have next to nothing rights in Islamic countries.

Please update your information about indian history.........FYI The Indus Civilization was destroyed by the Aryans who are considered the earliest Hindus came to India in about 1500BC which was way before the Holy Prophet(PBUH) started to spread the message of Islam in 7th centuryCE and the Muslims came to India in the 12th centuryCE and by this time the indus valley civilization was ancient history. Thus, proving that your point that muslims destroyed the Indus Valley Civilization was wrong as it is almost impossible.

It shouldn't be a secret that big powers are after the geopolitical advantage that Muslim countries have due to their location as well as the resources in these countries and so they will use all their powers to take control of it including military power and media propaganda. Some people fall for such propaganda understandably though as they are good at it and most people readily believe news when the news describe "others" and if it is convinient for them to believe and therefore get a sense of belonging with surrounding society. Islam is the second largest religion in India and Muslim is the second largest community after Hindus in the country. Islam reached India in the very early period and it is believed that one of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)'s companions Malik bin Deenar came to India's western coast in 7th century and a mosque was built there in 629 EC which still exists. Since then Islam has a very strong root in India and Muslims spread across the subcontinent.
Muslims ruled India for over 600 years and contributed in many ways to Indian culture and society. Their contribution to literature, art, culture and architecture is part of India’s glorious history. The economy was so rich during the Muslim rule that India was known as the golden bird. After 1947, there is another phase of Islam and Muslims in India. For a few decades after the partition, despite being in large number Muslims’ role was negligible in many walks of life in northern India. However, southern India had very less impact of the partition and therefore socio-economic situation of Muslims is comparatively better in southern provinces.

@EnteBoi Islam and politics are intricately connected, it is not the full truth to say Muslim countries don't equal to Islam. Countries living under Sharia law do equal Islam, they can be no more Islamic.
To me it seems some do not like the quality of life offered in these countries and the quality of life this type of governance can provide (and many do like it), and some unsatisfied move to Western countries for the material and lifestyle differences. Many integrate well, but some only want to change the new country to what they're familiar with (which does bring many good qualities with it, but some changes are more difficult for established populations).
From what it seems to me, (I'm still learning and am not fixed in my ideas), it seems that peace lasts until the voting numbers change. With over 4 children on average in Muslim families, and 2 in other Western families, it only takes a few generations to be able to change political representation. Then laws change, and the probability of conflict increases (think Kosovo, Rohingya/Burma, Central African Republic, etc). Add to this the number of Muslim countries that are 95% Muslim or more, with conflict against minorities is unnerving for those that don't follow the Islamic religion (it looks like low tolerance from the outside). Also that Islam has continuing conflicts with Christians (Africa, former Yugoslavia), Isreal (Lebanon, Iran, Palestine), Hindus (India/Kashmir), and Buddhists (Burma). No other religions are at conflict with each other, Islam is fighting them all.
I hope I have not put the correct picture into place, and will watch Europe with it's rapidly increasing Muslim population closely. When voting majorities change, will the Muslims there try to change their host countries? Time will tell. The stakes couldn't be higher.

I like this talk and I can see her point of view, BUT the 'Us vs Them' separation was initially perpetuated by Muslims. It still is perpetuated by Muslims in many Muslim nations, including so-called 'moderate' Muslim majority Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, etc etc. Religious minorities are often treated as 2nd class citizens in Muslim majority countries like Egypt and Malaysia. Christians and other religious minorities are often not allowed to build or have so much restrictions on building churches and temples. So when anti-Muslim protesters call for the banning of mosques and Islamic institutions, they have to realise that these non-Muslim protesters are simply reflecting back to them the same restrictions Muslims in another part of the world imposes on their non-Muslim citizens. It's a push back and a way of saying you can't have your cake and eat it. Also, I have witnessed the shifting conservatism in Muslims around the world, particularly in South East Asia where many Muslims will not want to sit next to a non-Muslim in a public space and have their respective meals. They perpetuate this 'Us vs Them', we are 'clean' they are 'unclean', we are believers they are the unbelievers identity separation. Muslims are the ones initiating this. Maybe it's a superiority complex they feel. Though that 'superiority complex' they have has ZERO basis.
When Muslims try to shift the blame and say they are the 'victims', they have to be very careful because very often it is Muslims who subject religious minorities in their Muslim-majority countries to persecution and discrimination. Because Muslims are also the perpetrators of discrimination, non-Muslims see the double standards and resist the narrative that Muslims are sometimes victims too. The ball is in the Muslim court for them to speak out against the unfair discrimination by fellow Muslims (around the world) against non-Muslim religious minorities, women and sexual minorities (LGBTI communities). Only then will Muslims likely to see any form of discrimination against them diminish.

What is your explanation about the followings: (61). Accursed, they will be seized wherever found, and killed with a (terrible) slaughter. (64). Verily, Allah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a flaming Fire (Hell) Sarah 33. Al-Ahzab para 61 and 64. The Nobel Qur'an by King Fahd Complex.
    106. Whoever disbelieved in Allah after his belief, except him who is forced thereto and whose heart is at rest with Faith; but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is wrath from Allah, and their's will be a great torment. (Sarah 16. An Nahi, The Nobel Qur'an).
If Allah has the right to curse us, of course, we equally have the right to curse him. I don't think his words were not of a God's word, but came out of the mouth of a vulgar, failed, angry, and contempt drunkard!! If anyone believe such teachings, and if they truly follow him, they all will become like ISIS, the same mentality.

Then , you should stop point out , copy and write the verse based on your interest.. and start looking for it's meaning(Tafseer) .. so that you can get idea about what the verse is about ..

Why doesn't the speaker think deep about the below realities of Islam before claiming victim hood and not telling adequate stories
    1. Top 20 countries with low human rights are almost all Muslim countries
    2. Polygamy is legal in Islam
    3. Divorce is one sided in Islam, reserved for men
    4. Islamic countries doesn't provide equal citizenship for people of other religions
    5. There are 1.6 billion diverse Muslim people at the outset... But they all say "Allahu Akbar" and unite. They are much united than any other religious group on fundamentals. Islam is the least pluralistic of all religions. In almost every Islamic country barring places like Turkey and few others, 40% or more want Sharia law. Even in Russia and UK, Muslims want Sharia law to rule their country. This lady living in western land talks about a land she hailed from four generations back as her own land as if she lives there today.
It is time the speaker looks deep within before commenting on what others do to them..

Most think of non Muslims as Kufars, if America become a Muslim majority country in the future, her own children or grandchildren will take away our rights. This is the reason why she can’t be what she is in America, in any Muslim country or for that matter in Pakistan, as she mentions it.

Being a Eurasian (Half White and Half Asian) I have never realized that being a Muslim is such a burden.
I’m half Lutheran and half Buddhist. Not sure why anyone should feel insecure in the United States about their religion. I grew up in San Francisco (1953 to 1965) my first twelve years and never had to “explain” anything to anybody about who I was and why I looked “different.”
I give my Mother most of the credit for that. She taught me to respect people. She taught me that I was special but no more special than anybody else.
And to ALWAYS be aware of the feelings of others.
Shouldn’t this be the Universal Credo by which we conduct ourselves? Isn’t cross-cultural “getting-along” a two-way street?
I’m 68 years old. Grew up in an Italian/Jewish/WASP neighbourhood in San Francisco. I don’t lack for exposure to different cultures, etc, but my complaint with Muslims: Why do so many Muslims DEMAND special treatment?
    Just wondering 🤫

My lady the Pashion you show for Islam and your faith must be should also shown to people of other face who live in Muslim countries who cannot even say what you say so free and open in a free country because you are protected and you know that no one will kill you or your family, because it is not Pakistan, Saudi, or Egypt it is The United States and Predominantly Christian country.
I live in India and I know the problems that Muslims cause on a day to day basis. I am not telling that all muslims are bad but a good majority of them do not view secularism as a positive thing, in fact in their hearts of heart they don't want Hindus or Christians they want India to be a Muslim country they want us to be kicked out our women to be raped and people people like us to be dominated so I am really sorry but Islam is not a faith of peace.
So I am really sorry but islam is not a religon of peace but it is a religon of violence, terrorism and JihadI. Always felt when ever I saw my Muslim friends most of them who are nice Atleast outwardly that's they also believed in secular values respected our face but this is not the case repeated experience have taught me that as a General Group Muslims disrespect people of other faiths I can give you thousands of examples where non Muslims are treated as second class citizens but let me give you just a few examples.
    1. Christian and Hindu in Pakistan do not have voting rights neither can a Christian or a Hindu stand for an electoral position is this not discrimination and does Americans do the same with Muslims these are all questions that Muslims should ask themselves.
    2. Why doesn't Saudi Arabia,United Arab Emirates, Kuwait or Qutar give citizenship to people who are been staying in their countries for such a long time especially non Muslims why you got your citizenship in the United States why don't you question why Christians Hindus or Buddhist do not get their citizenship in your countrys.
    2. Let's take the example of your own country where you come from originally Pakistan where Christians are persecuted on a daily basis during the Independence when Pakistan got its independence that is also illegal because it partitioned India the population of minorities especially Hindu and Christians put together was almost 25% of the country's total population today both of them put together stay under 2% so how can you miss guide Americans and the Western population that Islam is a religion of peace no I will never accept it Islam is not a religion of peace neither was its profit neither is its followers we are not fools you always believe whatever crap you say you must demonstrate that you are really peaceful not just see and do all sorts of nonsense around the world.
I am so fed up by the lies that Muslims tell constantly in the media that they are a peaceful group of people they are not there absolutely not they are the most violent and destructive minded people they want to kill themselves and kill other that's the only thing they have Because that is what Islam teaches.
Let me ask you a final question why did your parents want to come and come to America to find the American dream why couldn't a stay back in an Islamic Pakistan and find all the freedoms that you find in America, Or even better why don't you think of going back to Pakistan.
And I really hope that one day Muslims are so nice that I can use my true identity to write or criticize Islam freely till that time I am really sorry.

    • @WowYaska
      @WowYaska 7 років тому

+Code Junkes As far as I know Ahmadis believe in innovative beliefs in Islam. They say there is another prophet coming after Muhammad peace be upon him, and even though we believe that Isa (Jesus) is coming we don't say that he is coming with any new message to his arrival. When you enter into Islam you do it by saying the shahada. Thats the declaration faith which is "There is only one God and Muhammad is His slave and final messenger" . Ahmadis have an issue with this by not embracing the fundamentals of Islam. The same like as if I call myself Christian but don't believe in the fundamentals of Christianity. With that said I'm not saying they need to be punished or anything, heck no. Its just problematic to call them Muslims thats all.

    • @codejunkes4607
      @codejunkes4607 7 років тому +1

They want to call them Muslims and it is their choice, you can not take it away form them that. Now ISIS may not think you are a true Muslims because you reject slavery and sex slavery which they think as a integral part of their version of the religion. They have their scriptural evidence for that. And according to you ISIS are not true Muslim for the same reason.
This is a endless debate so believe in Humanity and Human Rights, it is their human right to call themselves whatever they want. If each human human being respects others human right and give them equal right according human rights they the world will be a great place to leave without any war or violence.

Although I am not religious, but was grown in Buddhist family. I was happy to see my parents have their Buddha to mumbling to giving them a good feelings of hopes.
Buddhists believe Buddha always stays 3" above your head, monitoring your behaviors.
Doing each good thing, Buddah will accumulate your lucks to yourself, family and future generations.

Most of the first ones where and made great contributions to the western societeys they came to.
Her dog whistle blaming of colonialism did seem a bit ripe from an adherent to a er.. faith that actually had conquered a land empire that compared with the last of the the empires, the British.
Indeed , the British never actually 'conquered' India in the 'one big army beats other big army and takes over' scenario that was true of much of Islam's colonial acquisition.
And, if for a moment, she thinks that her brother muslims are being put upon then I invite her to a guided tour of Luton (handy for the airport when she wants to make a quick exit, and , well, chose...tower hamlets ...with those clothes and (very attractive ) hairdo?

Rumi saw the spirituality in Islam. How many Muslims actually read Rumi? Or how many Muslims ever know anything spiritual written in their holy book? All they know about is that they need to convert those who are not Muslims. Religion is a purely personal issue. No one can “force” anyone to follow a spiritual path - not even God. God only comes occasionally to nudge you into the right path. As for Islamophobia, it is about time you realise that it has come to stay till you come to accept that other religions also can coexist along with Islam and Islam is in no way the “only” religion.

All killing is wrong! wrong! wrong! regardless of who we are or where we come from, killing is wrong!!! while you concentrate on muslims killing non muslims...sophisticated arms are being used against muslims!! It's more muslims that are being killed!. ..These are all civilians! !! are you telling me this is right??? All of us that belong to the human race, need to stop this!! why are we not saying this instead of saying you did this and that? I am a muslim! I hurt when I see an animal killed, never mind a human! I hurt when you put me into the brand of terrorism yet I do not call for killing anyone! don't insult the rest of us muslims who are not criminals. dont tarnish our name just because few of our people have left the faith and have forgotten what God says!! not in my name!! not in Islam's name!!!
Thank you to this speaker. she talks so much sense. we need more of our people out there speaking for Islam. It is a great shame it has come to this. Were her forefathers forced to migrate to the US. Why don't they get back to their home countries and get things right for the 1.7 billion? compelled to ask these questions. That s all.

This would go for the Irish, Brits, Germans and the rest of the Europeans! Not sure what you mean by "they" and the 1.7B.

Bravo! Such an eloquently voiced piece. The tempo was so Much better than the majority of Ted Talks I've seen, where the speaker sounds rushed, anxious, or just desperately needs to switch to DECAF.
    Well-done.l

is there a ted talk about ex Muslims. it's like the narrative is only given about reasons for Islam and not reasons why some leave and the repurcussion in regards to leaving.

I largely don't agree with her because it is in 2017 why are we discussing this is because there is a specific community because of which world is becoming a little uncomfortable if you're living with your neighbour and you both are not comfortable with each other you need to talk or you need to move or you need to try to make each other comfortable and this particular community or the people are not trying at all to make rest of the fellow citizens comfortable there is no moves from your end there is just talk like this that you have been The victim off bad governance actually G Bush or Obama they want best for their country best for the people of America they don't care about Arab or Iraq and we should not fist I have to think about my own house. I think miss you really need to see the picture from a different angle you are looking at the situation just from your side.

Great Speech! It is to much injustice in the world nowadays. And it looks like almost nobody cares about humanity and peoples getting blown tortured every day. From the bottom of my heart I hope all this blood shed will disappear in my life tyme:/
