  • This is my latest update on the major upgrade to Sydney Central Station, as part of the Sydney Metro Project.
    The vast majority of the footage was taken in March 2023, with some earlier footage to compare the changes with now.
    I start with the new Chalmers Street entrance which continues to evolve and the Randle Lane side has now changed massively! This includes some footage of the new lifts and escalators that lead down to Central Walk.
    I then cover the lift and north escalators to platforms 22 & 23 that opened earlier in March. This includes taking a ride in a brand new Central Walk lift!
    I'll then give you an update on the remaining Central Walk escalators and lifts that will service platforms 16 to 21.
    I then reveal the changes to the Metro Concourse, starting with a new temporary connection to the Southern Tunnel.
    I then show you all the lifts and escalators up to platforms 12 to 14, and then glimpses of the escalators and lifts that go down to the Sydney Metro Platforms.
    It's then a quick update on the northern concourse, including some artwork and a ticking clock!
    And then finally, an update on platforms 12 to 14 at Sydney's Central Station, and this includes a guided virtual tour of platforms 12 and 13, and on train footage of platform 14.
    By the end of this video, you'll be bang up to date on the "once in a lifetime" changes at Sydney's Central Station.

    Accuracy
    I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
    Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
    All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

      @@eimjabegg5943 Thanks! I actually did an information officer role for the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension in London in 1999. That was before UA-cam was a thing! Some of the design concepts such as bringing in natural light and designing wide spacious concourses and platforms also happened on the Jubilee Line.

    I was in Melbourne recently and used the Southern Cross station. What I liked about it was the roof covering all platforms providing weather protection. I would have loved for Central to have full roof coverage. I think it's a missed opportunity for practicality

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому +1

      I was in Melbourne recently as well, to film Metro Tunnel. Look out for that in April. I spent a very enjoyable hour wondering around Southern Cross Station, watching loco hauled regional trains departing (it was the evening peak). I enjoyed the classic diesel smell that you don't get Sydney, and did notice the long canopies as well. It took me a little while to find the dual gauge tracks. Yes, it would have been nice to have the full roof canopies at Central (and elsewhere in Sydney), not so much for the rain, but more for the strong sun in the summer.

    Hi Paul 👋, I am pleased that you are taking your obsession with the escalators, step by step, which I am sure you find very moving 😀 😉. I must admit that I am looking forward to the finished product even though I find it a little overwhelming. I am a fossil, and it will take time for me to fully appreciate the design of this project, although I think it clashes somewhat with the original sandstone buildings. The platform canopies need to be built on platforms 1-11 to avoid the clash I mentioned. Great work, Paul, and I appreciate the hard work you put into each of your videos. Looking forward to your next video, Paul,I will see you there. 😀

In Central Walk and the Metro Concourse, there are lots of exits to escalators, so I don't think a travelator would work that well, unless it bypassed some of them. Good idea though! Yeah. A big improvement. But it does not make the trains any faster. Especially the Illawarra line. You still have to wait over an hour between trains. And trains to Cronulla & Waterfall are every 15 mins. And you sometimes get 4 carriage trains (in peak hour) on Illawarra line. Every train on Illawarra line to Central & Central to Illawarra should be 8 carriages.

      Hi Rhett, that's coming under the "More Trains, More Stations" program, which will bring the Wollongong to Central frequency to half-hourly and the new Mariyung trains should mean at least a 6 car train and up to 10 cars. The T4 line will also get 30% more trains. You can find out more here - www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/more-trains-more-services

      @@TransportVlog Hope so. 🤞 We also need a shuttle service between Thirroul & Port Kembla. Sometimes it is over a hour wait for a local train in both directions.

    I wonder what damage has been done to the Randal St. entrance building by this afternoon's fire. I believe it was the brown brick building you see on the left at 1:19 that was on fire and collapsed.

      Hi Ken, yes it was that building! I was there today, but couldn't get close to Randal Lane as its all cordoned off. However, from the front, the Chalmers Street entrance looks fine. I even managed to get a peek through the hoardings, as no workers were on site (for obvious reasons!). Anyway a Central Station update will be my next video, and should be out next week.

    I went to central today..
    There are no tactile tiles around support pillars garbage bins seats or hydrants.
    An unacceptable over-site In My Opinion !
    The glass panels for the skylights in the platform do not sit flush to the metal it is set into-it is a trip hazard.

    Hi Paul, interesting video. Will the station actually be split names with Chalmers Street and Central? If so, where exactly will be the location where the name will change. We are doing the opposite here in Melbourne, with out new planned rail line with a second Burwood station being built near Deakin University. The other Burwood railway station is further west on the Camberwell to Alamein train line. The two Burwood stations will be completely separate. Time will tell how that progresses. Maybe one Burwood station will have a name change as time passes!! Incidentally, how far are the north and south Central Walk escalators from each other? Interesting seeing Central Walk, which reminds me a bit of the walkway that we used to have at Spencer Street Station. However, this was all demolished when they rebuilt it all as Southern Cross Station. Will they be renumbering any of the platforms later, due to platform 15 now being gone? Which train lines used platform 15, when it existed? Just thinking, they more likely have spare seats and platform signs from platform 15, which they could now re-use on other platforms. Anyway, all the very best. Rob.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому

      Thanks Rob, the light rail stop for the L2 & L3 is called Central Chalmers Street to differentiate it from the L1 stop which is called Central, Grand Concourse. However, the train station is still called Central, and the new Chalmers Street entrance will be another way into Central Station. Yes two Burwood Stations would be confusing! Let's hope they change that! I would say the north and south escalators are about 50 metres apart at the platforms. It's about 3 carriages of a Waratah Train. No plans to renumber the platforms. It's too difficult these days, as the platform numbers are programmed into many different computer systems! Same scenario as Platform 11 at Flinders Street. Platform 15 was rarely used, and was primarily for stabling trains only. The platform signs have been reused, but the seats are new. Glad you enjoyed this video. I'm working on a Melbourne Metro Tunnel video at the moment, which I'm sure you'll love. Hope to release that later this month.

      I've got a couple of Central Station videos coming up. The first (probably on Sunday) will cover the new Chalmers Street entrance, which was damaged by the Randle Street fire. This will then be followed by a deep dive into the newly opened north-south concourse. I'm not sure which building you're referring to (the non child proof one). Maybe you can elaborate on that?
