Ram 1500 suspension problems/DIY fix

  • My 16 ram sport suspension has been having problems with the cold winters in northern VT with the temps roughly -10’ to 8’ for days and sometimes weeks at a time,
    Truck first started with the front dropping almost scraping the ground and the back was in ATLEAST off road 2 , I first brought it to a place to look over it and fix it and it ended up being a corroded wire from the “compressor “ and I advise you before you take to anywhere you should try these tips with the heat pad atleast,
    Anyways after I got it back it was fine for a bit but another cold snap happened and the trucks back passenger side was in off road 2 and the driver side was in exit/entry mode and the front driver tire was inside the wheel well and passenger side was almost there so it was all over the place , so I picked up a heat pad ran by a extension cord from the house and some “air break antifreeze” as far as I no there’s really no difference in the brand’s except what they “claim” so I wrapped the compressor and put some of the antifreeze in the hose behind the tail light “one with filter” and drove it for a few minutes and bam works now with no problems I will update in a few days to make sure it’s still working

    I've heard of this fix, thanks. My 2014 was trouble free until 2 winters ago and only when very cold. This year it started at 28f.

    Going to try this. Thanks for the video. Had my air compressor replaced two years ago under warranty. Now it's starting to screw up again. I'm sure it's from frozen moisture in the system.

      Sorry for the late reply, this video was from last year and all summer I have had zero issues with it , I live in northern VT and just in the recent months it’s been getting very cold and still no issue I have yet to plug the heat pad in ether , so 🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s got to be doing something, IF anything I’d advise you to use a little rather than a lot ,

      It's mid January 2022, I've had this stuff in my air ride system for two months. Absolutely no issues. The truck seams to go up and down smoother than it did when it was new. Thaw your truck out in a heated garage, drop it down, locate the air intake hose behind the passenger side tail light, push your controls to take it up to off road level and put a capful of the antifreeze in the hose. I'm not an engineer but this does the trick on my truck. Thanks Clifford.

    I have a 13 with the air ride and personally I hate it, lol. Was told it was charged with nitrogen but I don't think so as you can add air brake fluid to the hose which means it can't be a closed system and when it does come up to height it vents.

      I absolutely love my air ride now that I figured it out, holds more weight , wash board is almost none existent and big bumps and dips in the road don’t slam your struts up inside your truck

  • @ArcolaBridge

    You got to fix the leak so it doesn't drain the nitrogen out and system doesn't have to pump in wet air that freezes in winter

    Awesome video, I'm going to try this but I'll do it in the fall when it's not quite as cold out. I know I'll have problems again this coming winter. It's inevitable at this point. The RAM air suspension is a complete trash system.

    Do you plug the blanket just overnight or do you plug it inside the truck?

      Currently I hAvnt had it plugged in at all , it’s still tied up on the compressor though, I was skeptical at first so anytime I got home after my drive I’d plug it in to a outlet outside , but then realized over time between my drives the truck was fine, ultimately I think once the air break antifreeze is in the lines your all set, I hAvnt had any issues since . Today the high was -8 “real feel” of -27 and the truck is fine,
      Thanks for watching

    I though that perhaps that liquid who go through your air compressor and fuck it up or something. I drive semi truck but that system uses true air vs nitrogen which is used in these ram 1500 with air ride suspension. I have one my self but it is a 2015 1500 Laramie edition. Never had to use air brake fluid for it. And I live in Ontario Canada where we can get up to -40 and under up north here.

      You could have a Corroded wire going to your bags or compressor.... generally when fuses blow it’s one of 2 things electrical or somethings working harder than it’s supposed to, when I had first purchased the truck I had a problem and under your hood on the wheel wells you have what looks to be sensors and in side the rear wheel wells there are lift links jiggled those and it stoped blowing fuses , they were loose some how, but in my recent experience when the fuse would pop it was because there was moisture in my air lines and in Vermont it gets very very cold and it would freeze my valves open/closed vice versa so the compressor wouldn’t run ,

    Not sure why you have a vent tube for that system. My 2015 is a closed nitrogen filled system with an air tank under the bed just behind the rear axle. There shouldn't be a vent line unless the system was an air system prior to 2015.

    • @cliffordsawyer2994
      @cliffordsawyer2994  2 роки тому

      It is sealed yes, but if the system thinks it is low on nitrogen for any reason the system pulls outside air in to fill completely, Iv gone in and out of these systems read thousands of threads and talked to many many mechanics about this issue ,

    • @brianarant1309
      @brianarant1309 2 роки тому +1

      @@cliffordsawyer2994 Wow, that kind of defeats the purpose of a sealed system. I had the same issue as you when my truck was 2 years old (2017) and it was -15degF outside in Colorado. They replaced the compressor and valve block with a redesigned version, recharged everything and I haven't had any issues since then (fingers crossed). Do you operate your suspension often? Mine always goes into Aero mode several times a day and I always seem to be playing with it. You would think if they were going to allow it to pull in outside air, they would they would have some sort of desiccant to dry the air out first.

    • @cliffordsawyer2994
      @cliffordsawyer2994  2 роки тому

      @@brianarant1309 agreed, and I think the “sealed” part is more like transmission “sealed” where if you knew what you where doing you could change/empty the fluid I think the same goes for this and this little fix hasn’t been around for very long all the dealership I spoke to said the last 3-6 years they completely stopped ordering air ride suspension due to cold weather specifically, but any where else in the world people absolutely love them, me including, Iv had struts and springs but NOTHING compares to the air ride , and to the “aero mode” yes mine goes in and out multiple times within my driving times I used off road 2 quite often because the snow plows love to build up massive walls so off-road 2 and lock the 4wd and over I go, one thing I have noticed as well as others who have messaged me personally was after putting a little bit of this stuff in there pump it’s much faster and smoother of a lift up and down,

      If you google the fuse box location for your year etc you should be able to find a diagram. It'll be typically right side edge, midway called F5 - (40amp) green (don't substitute a 50 amp) you can try a 30 amp if you have nothing else.

      @sebastian842 2 роки тому

      How did that work for you putting a 50 amp fuse in when it requires a 40 amp? Personally, I wouldn't do that. I would imagine it could cause permanent damage to the expensive compressor. I couldn't get 40 amp jcase fuses so I opted for a 30 amp & used those til I could find some air line / air brake antifreeze.

      To add to this thread, I would say. Before you add the air line antifreeze & if you can get your truck into a warm location & get the air suspension working. Get the system into the transport mode or even the entry-level height. Then add the air line antifreeze to the inlet behind the taillight (filter end) this way the antifreeze cycles through a little quicker, but nonetheless it will make its way to where it needs to go, I would suggest a little capful of this stuff yearly to keep it working optimal. :-)
