The Fantasy on themes from the opera "Marco Spada" by D.-F.-E. Auber op. 101 is one of two opera fantasies that Tulou composed for the concours at the Paris Conservatoire. The opera was premiered by the Opéra Comique on 21 December 1852. Tulou used two melodies: from the quartet "Dans ce séjours tranquille" (Act 1 No. 2), the melody of Angèle, and the coquettish ariette "Vous pouvez soupirer" (Act 2 No. 7), by the Marchesa Sampieri, both soprano voices.
Three students won prizes in 1853: a first prize went to Eugène-Jean Devalois (27, making him the oldest documented student to win a prize) and Martin-Édouard Alvès (19). Jean-Baptiste Laflorance (17) received a second prize. One of these three students would later be employed himself by the Opéra Comique.
The flute used in the video was made in the Triébert workshop around the middle of the 19th century. Triébert mainly made oboes, and this is also noticeable in this flute. It does not have the typical characteristics of a French flute from this period. Its tone is softer and less radiant, the third octave responds very difficultly, from A3 onwards only with great pressure, its articulation could almost be called lisping. The flute has an unusually large number of trill keys for French instruments (B/C, B/C sharp and D/E), which are unlikely to have been used in the everyday life of a flutist. The piano is a Pleyel from 1829.
The score is available on IMSLP.
