Impromptu, J. T. De Sutter
Anne Pustlauk, flute.
Toby Sermeus, piano.
2024
Jules-Toussaint De Sutter (1889-1959) composed the Impromptu in 1913, at the age of 24. It was written for the final flute examination at the Brussels Conservatoire.
De Sutter studied piano and composition at the Ghent Conservatoire. During World War I, he went to England where he performed for Belgian refugees. After the war, he studied conducting in Germany and returned to Belgium where he worked as a conductor.
The wooden cylindrical Boehm system flute used in the video was made around 1880 in the workshop of Eugène Albert in Brussels. The Albert workshop was active for more than a century, starting with Eugène in around 1839, at a time when the Boehm flute was played by only very few flutists. In 1867, Albert’s flutes won a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition. In 1887 he retired, and his three sons Jean-Baptiste, Jacques Émile and Joseph-Eugène took over the business. Jacques made mainly oboes under his own name; the other brothers made all kinds of woodwind instruments, from 1886 to 1895 under the name of “Albert Frères” and later under their own names. After their deaths, their wives took over the workshop. The last Albert workshop closed in 1950.
Albert flutes don’t have serial numbers, and documents from or about the workshops are rare. It is therefore difficult to date their instruments.
The grand piano, made in 1884 by Pleyel, Wolff & Cie., is in the collection of the Museum Vleeshuis in Antwerp where the recording took place.
Toby Sermeus, piano.

Hendrik VdA
Hello, Thank you for such a beautiful performance. Out of interest, where did you source your information on Charles Allard. He is my great-great grand father and I would love to know more about his life. I have his exam certificate of his 1839 performance of this music at the conservatoire de paris. Thank you
Hats off everyone and I mean everyone who ever spent thousands of hours blowing into a hole in a peice of wood or metal hoping that something beautiful might result - eventually.
hello, can you send me these notes please!!!!
Beautiful!!!
The timbre of the middle register! I would compare it to Meursault!
Beautiful! What again were the supposed benefits of the Boehm flute?
This was 5 month ago... I miss you and I hope & wish you are well ❤
Very interesting! Would Donjon have played simple system? Did he switch to boehm and compose for it in mind with his 8 etudes and pieces like “Pan!” or was he always a simple system player? Did students under Tulou HAVE to use his flutes?
This is extraordinary good and very pleasant to listen to.
Absolutely beautiful. So sweet and pure. And such seemingly effortless virtuosity. I'm so glad this popped up on UA-cam. Thank you so much both of you.
Early Romantic music played on historical instruments using HIP approach? I love it. It is clear the difference between late Baroque flute and early Romantic flute. Thanks for sharing this amazing performance.
After having listened to this performance it is hard for me to do it with modern instruments. Thank you two a lot for this elegant masterpiece of Tulou's!
phänomenal
unfassbar beeindruckende Interpretation
These are very interesting and beautifully played performances. I look forward to hearing more of them.
Played virtuoso while retaining the intimate character right down to the breathtaking final variations. Amazing!
Très réussi, très touchant, superbe technique, jolie sonorité. Bravo!
Merci Anne, c'est merveilleux. Bravo
amazing music, thank you
Bravo!
O SOM QUE EU GOSTO, NO PIANO.
Very nice performance! I love Tulou's work. Please continue to play a variety of his pieces.
Magnifique !!! Prodigieux !!!
fantastic as always! Very interesting to compare the subtle differences between the French flutes in your previous recordings and this German flute. A terrific sounding instrument.
Beautifully played and with an amazingly clear and strong tone from the flute.
Bravissima!
Wonderful, thank you.
Brava! Musical! In tune! Inspiring!
... okay, let's not say "in tune". The prowess on this instrument ,however, is spectacular! Brava
