    It was an HONEST, REALISTIC video that showed all the things that could go wrong while changing the brakes. Now I know a regular guy like me can do it too.

    Man you're amazing, thank you so much. The hardest work for me was to remove the freaking drum, OMG what a nightmare. I used two bolts 8mm by 1.25 in the little two holes in the drum and that made it lose a little, from there it took me forever to get it out haha. Thanks for this video, saved me $300 lol

      Jonathan Sandi awesome man, the whole reason I was watching this is to figure out what size bolts I need to pull it,he doesn't say in the video and you just saved me a whole bunch of aggravation. 👍👍👍

    I am replacing the rear shoes on my 2011 versa..i couldn't figure out why the drum wouldn't go back on..it seemed as though the shoes were to big..then I realized that the adjuster needs to be all the way in...and the top springs go into the slot that is farther away..so thank you for this video..ill fix it in the morning..

    If you haven't done drum brakes in say 25 years changing both rear brakes with new drums, shoes & spring kit on a newly purchased used 2007 Nissan Versa, (4 speed automatic transmission, Not the CV Transmission!), with 175,000 miles on it where the rear shoes were Never replaced, get ready for heartbreak garage! I couldn't get the adjuster to back off the shoes through that tiny 1/2" hole. The old shoes had "Cut" a 1/8" deep 2" wide pocket groove, 360 degrees on both sides into the drums & those suckers did not want to come out! Side one, first success, got the 20v hand grinder with the thinnest disc and cut the drum from outside edge to center hub hole & then hammered a flat punch into the cut making a 1/4" gap and pried off the old rusty drum. Side two, I didn't like side the one method so using the same grinder & disc I simply cut a a 2" X 2" square window where the stock 1/2" parking brake adjuster was. That gave much better access to the adjuster & adjuster lock & I was then able to back off the old shoes 1/4" & I finally pried off old drum #2. I guess being a retired NASA Prototype Machinist for many years didn't hurt!

    those springs can be a pain in the ass... Here's what I did that made it much much easier. Use a shoe lace around the hooked end to extend the spring into place then push it into slot with your other hand. Especially useful if the kit you get has small springs that are really difficult to stretch that far.

    I would just add to ALWAYS match up or compare the new shoes to the original ones before installing. just to make sure the auto parts store gave you the correct parts.

    Doing rear brake drums on most cars, can be a pain, especially if you don't know when the last time they were replaced. The main springs that connects the two shoes together, are of Hercules strength!, And, are designed that way! This is one of the main reasons they are very challenging to replace!

    See the access plug on the drum at the bottom at 12:53. It is so you can adjust the brake pads with the drum on. After putting the brake drum on and holding it in place with a lug nut, I pump the brakes a few times to center the pads then adjust the the brakes so that there is a little bit of drag.

      White Lithium in moderation...just enough to live the parts so they work freely...also on the backing plate where the shoes contact it...a little white lithium on each...(3 contact points per shoe)

    question this.. what happen if I had it tight. which is like when you turn the axle its hard to turn it. or hard to put the drum back.. so I need to redo the spring and adjust the adjuster back? or put it to the lowest.. and readjust for right tightness. why youtube that this just shows up. lol.. been searching for 2009 versa tutorial.. now just saw this, 4 hrs to late. :( thank you again.

      lol.. bad move driving it to work on the highway.. the drums were overheating. I head back home and loosen the adjuster. The good thing the drums and pads were still good as new. :)

    This vid is step by step except for the removal and replacement of the parking brake pins without damaging them. Please advise anything more than using a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to make this as easy as possible. Removal has me worried that the pin will not be in good enough shape to use as a replacement for the new brakes.

    • @dimiloland125

      I ended up buying the brake drum replacement kit. It had all the springs but I only needed the clips. $10 at AUTOZONE. I bent them off. They were not reusable.

    Or. There is another hole in the drum, has a rubber grommet in it, pop out the rubber and you can adjust that brake with the drum on

  • @lawrenceshdow
    @lawrenceshdow 5 років тому +1

    theres a hole on the front of that drum to back off the breaks... Am I wrong? I'm pretty sure there is on all the versas without a hole in the back.

    • @thomasbriansavingmoney
      @thomasbriansavingmoney  5 років тому

      that hole is not for adjustment. you run a bolt in there and it presses up against the axle plate to remove the drum if the drum is stuck, or if the brakes are locked up. great question. thanks for watching.

    • @thomasbriansavingmoney
      @thomasbriansavingmoney  6 років тому

      push it back on, if it doesn't leak, ( most times it wont ) your ok, if it does leak ( when its back on ) then it has a hole and must be replaced. its gonna leak a little if it was popped. if you lost any fluid, you will need to bleed the breaks.

    You have the knowledge for sure. However most of the things people would get caught on is the removal of pins, bolts, springs etc. They never see you use pliers to remove the springs or see your technique. If people are watching this as instructional the hard parts for them is gonna be the pieces you cut out. You make it seem so easy but someone with not much skill could have a terrible time removing springs themselves because they cant see it done in your video. You seem to be an excellent mechanic just a little polishing around the edges is needed to provide an excellent training diy video.
