If you guess what video I blatantly stole the intro from, you get a cookie and a heart comment! Anyway, one thing I couldn't find a way to add in the video -- the music. Tbh, the OST is pretty nice, not my favorites but good. I will have to say that the song that left the most impression on me was Zanmu's theme (or whatever had the crying echos in the background) as it genuinely unsettled me on first listen. I do like Zanmu tho, such an interesting instigator-esque character. Anyway, you might see me cover Touhou 19 again in the future (like an impressive tournament or something like that), since I am not too passionate about playing it rn. Next Touhou game I will review it Koumakyou, so stay turned for that :))))). Considering Netplay was an afterthought that was pushed for later in development, it's not surprising that balance wasn't being taken into consideration. I would say this has been one of the most well-received games on release, all things considered. The characters debuted to nearly universal adoration compared to other recent cast additions, and the multitude of character interaction possibilities gives us opportunities for more than just the typical main characters to talk with people. I honestly hope ZUN finds a way to incorporate that for even the non-phantasmaghoria games. Honestly, the people who 'lost' the most from this game are the people who play the games beyond completion. Which, I hate to say it, is significantly smaller than the people who just want to see the new characters.
It's true ZUN succeeded in that regard, he's quite good at making parallel stories (I.E POFV) And i think the recent characters are fairly good and fresh, i wasn't looking forward to them since UM was... something, but it made me appreciate them a lot more. As for the Netplay, it's broken and everyone will use 3rd party modifications, ZUN was better off not including Netplay in UDaLG so late in developpement, or create the game with netplay in mind from the start considering its state
I agree, it's pretty epic that ZUN released a half baked game because grape girl appeals to my yuri fetish. Actually playing Touhou games is cringe anyway.
I actually think Chiyari being "ugly" is good characterization. It shows she's more casual and laid-back, design-standing-out aside. Also, I remember some mentioning she's actually really skinny(see her damaged dialogue portraits). Especially stands out, because ZUN never really gives any character distinct body types in his own artwork, apart from height(and even that's obscured a bit for gameplay's sake).
i would like to drop something art design wise, regarding chiyari. i know its very fun to use "le drugs" as a joke on chiyari, due to her design, but it is way more intricate than that. starting off with the first: needles and blood vials. chiyari as a chubacapra as mentioned draws blood from their victims, very apt and something that fits her, being a hell being. though it is a bit more deep. she draws blood from herself too, in order to use those attacks. with that in mind, her design begins to clear up. her green shirt is actually a green hospital gown, but with a print to make it look more detailed. a very common concept, is to get blood drawn at hospitals. may it be for donating blood or help other in need quickly. your blood type matters! this will also explain her way of being around, shes slow, has slurred speech, which is common symptoms of getting blood drawn. you see... Transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) happen when one of the blood vessels that supply your brain with oxygen-rich blood becomes blocked. This interruption in the flow of blood to the brain means it cannot do some of its normal functions properly, leading to symptoms such as slurred speech and weakness. this is something that occours often when drawn too much blood at the time. it sucks, but it would make sense, since she has to use her own blood for attacks at the get-go. with all this said, as plain as chiyari looks, i do like her design and i appreciate what ZUN tried to do with it. i know its a childrens game so needle pricks wouldnt give it a good look, which i do find fair. overall , chiyari is currently broken , but has a backstory and mytholgoical and real life examples of reasons to be an really interesting character. i hope this clear up some of those memesters who thinks she is a drug addict in some way.
Fiction constantly tells us that blood magic is not banned from use because usage is dangerous or cruel(when using someone else's blood), but rather because it is absolutely broken lmao.
From a mechanics perspective, I feel like this type of game could become an instant classic if instead of it being made by just one person it was made by a small indie team that could balance it really well. ZUN is ultimately one person, and he likes to experiment and give a lot of personality of the characters through the way they fight. This can sometimes lead to weird or even bad design decisions. I hope that one day the community, or even ZUN himself, can make a patch/mod that better balances the game.
I think there's a fanmade mod that changes overall damage outputs and some aspects of EX attacks that can be downloaded via the Touhou Community Reliant Automatic Patcher, the fanmade tool for translations and the sort.
That's what I've been saying as well! I think it'd be cool if ZUN could assemble a small studio or get more devs on board for the 20th game in the series.
It is worth highlighting that ZUN's situation today is not the same as that of 20-15 years ago, ZUN is married and has children, so he barely has time for developing games, and since at least 2004 ZUN also spend time in derivative works such as books, etc. When ZUN had the time to dedicate the development to its games (despite working at Taito atm), they were much more elaborate than the current ones, EoSD, PCB and IN have notable differences even in the sprites of the playable characters themselves, while from PoFV onwards a recycling of assets began notable (which is not necessarily a bad thing and had already happened in the PC-98 games) and precisely IN is the Touhou game with the most content to date, and with the passage of time it became more pronounced. Before 2010, ZUN used to release a main game annually, with only 2 interruptions between 1999-2001, and the small hiatus of 2006, from 2011 onwards ZUN only releases a main game every 2 years, which coincides with its marriage. To solve this issue ZUN would have to abandon its release cycle based on conventions like Comiket to avoid working under pressure. He could also go for the development team path, but he's one of those who prefers to have full control of his own projects, so I see that as highly unlikely.
@@prizmastarz742 late as hell but yuyuko is BUSTED. She's not a character that you can just pick up and start winning games nonstop with, but if you learn how to play her she is a MONSTER that DOMINATES the neutral
Technically, everything is always intentional, but zun made it clear in the Omake.txt that his goal first and foremost was putting as much stuff as he could in a game, and making something creative (and presumably uniquely flawed) that modern ai couldn't. But with a cast of 19, that balance could have only been a mess, so it's good that tournaments have agreed to ban the Chupacabra.
@@momsaccount4033People who have the capability to create bugfixes but won't because "replay compatibility!" in a nutshell: Edit: Actually, lol. I just realized the irony when Touhou 19 does not even have replays. People straight up have no excuse for their ZUNism this time.
I managed to clear Hard Mode with each and every character and I do believe I've spent a lot of time on the game itself too, so here are a couple of suggestions of improvement that would definitely be needed in this otherwise somewhat "unfinished" game: - bring back scoring system + replays, extra stage would also be nice - generally speaking, the shooting power of characters are mostly lackluster, so by default the player should be equipped with Narumi's card at least at the beginning of Story Mode - stacking cards on VS/Online Mode; by unlocking achievements, the player should receive benefits such as +1 or 2 slots for multiple cards to be used during match to make the gameplay more interesting and to take better advantage of the card system (just like in TH18) - as it's quite easy to fill up the charge-o-meter during boss fights, the intensity level of attacks should be cut in half (for now, if you summon a LVL3 or LVL4 attack, their intensity levels immediately change from LEVEL1 to LEVEL2 and so on making these attacks harder than last time, when it reaches LEVEL8 the game's difficulty quickly turns to lunatic, even if you play on VS mode/normal mode - so my suggestion is for LVL3+4 attacks to remain on the same level twice in row before increasing a level) - fix Nazrin's/Enoko's/Chiyari's EX attack not to be summoned directly at you forcing you an instant miss - tone down AI in general, a lot (good thing we have a timer thingy on VS mode though, otherwise a match against AI would barely ever end even on normal mode) - include a functional Online Mode About the characters: - tone down Reimu's LVL2, seriously, stahp. Her LVL3 attack could remain the same but with the small versions of yin-yang orbs instead of the sadistic Misumaru gigantic ones, she would be way more balanced this way - tone down Marisa's LVL4 boss fight a bit, it's way too unfair and hard compared to many other boss fights - buff up Sanae's LVL1 attack or at least make it non-homing so it cannot be misdirected - improve Ran's movement speed a bit, she's supposed to be a fast character right? - Aunn - who is like the worst playable character to me in the game - should have a bit stronger shot and less crappy exorcism aura - FIX NAZRIN'S GODDAMN EXORCISM AURA, homing is a good concept but executed horrendously due to its poor speed, it should be way quicker-to-react at least to be useful - As soon as I've learnt the proper strategy with Orin she doesen't seem like a bad playable character anymore, but she's buggy as hell; using her LVL2 can cause one miss sometimes for no appearant reason unless you stay on the bottom of the screen (or it might be intentional ionno) and her LVL3 attack should be toned the fuck down as its increased level versions can fill up the screen with a lot of fuckin bullets in no time (at least the spirits should cease to fire bullets by the time they arrive to the bottom section of the screen) - strengthen Tsukasa's shooting power and boss fight while tone down her EX & LVL3 attack for the same reason as with Orin - buff up Mamizou's LVL3 attack a bit, maybe her LVL4 boss fight too, she seems a bit weaker compared to other characters in terms of these attacks - strengthen Yachie's shooting power, tone down her EX otters - strengthen Saki's shooting power, her lasers are not doing shit, I also encountered a bug with her on VS mode; appearantly she cannot be equipped with Marisa's laser card, buff up her LVL4 attack too - tone down Yuuma's EX eagles, they seem to be the strongest but fastest too among all EX beast spirits, buff up her LVL2 as it's barely inflicting any damage - make Suika move slower during her LVL4 boss attack (not all exorcism aura types are good against her) - strengthen Son's shooting power and LVL1 attack, they are so weak - remove Chiyari from game or at least fix her EX, LVL2 and LVL3 attacks - buff up Hisami's shooting power, LVL1 & 2 and tone down her LVL3 attack which can crash the game too lol - tone down Zanmu's EX attacks by toning down her LVL2 too (there should be a limit of how many attacks she can summon to the opponent's screen, same with Orin)
“I feel people appreciated the game for it’s story and design rather than it’s actual gameplay” Yeah, like that’s new for Touhou. I think a lot of Touhou fans are more of a fan of the idea of Touhou, rather than the games themselves.
It is hilarious how the one game actually being played for being a game is TH1. Simply because the story barely exists, so people only seriously pick it up if they like the gameplay concept.
The real cool thing about Yuuma's kit is that she expends her scope to slow everything and eat up all the power on the board, and then throw it at the opponent. It's very in character, and it's so much fun that even when they are pretty dodgeable by the computer, you get so much energy and feel so much power build up that you throw absolutely everything you can until it kills the AI.
My take on all of this is I find it funny how Suwawako says ZUN, like, "son" instead of what you would normally say in Spanish (And in JP for that matter) "zun" (Similar to soon).
I think people choose Yuuma for the charge radius taking up the entire screen, not only slowing down bullets on the whole screen, but also if a boss is out, getting bullet money to drop right at the boss's location as they shoot out bullets, making it super easy to get out several EX attacks from one boss. edit: meant charge, used to 18.5 calling it bullet money
I think the game is okay. Not bad, but not the greatest. I enjoyed it, and managed to capture a texture glitch where the characters sprites turn blue (I posted it on the Touhou subreddit). Edit: I uploaded it to youtube.
I have some interesting things to say about the new introduced characters from Touhou 19. Son Biten looks cool and I lile her design, her theme is really nice and that her interaction with Sanae was cute. Enoko is interesting to me because she has meet before Marisa, like possibly the time that she first came to the Forest, but our beloved Magician doesn't remember her. Chiyari just looks funny to me, and also to add that she is both seen as a Chupacabra and a Tenkajin. Hisami became instantly into my favorite of the new characters, her design is good and gives a catching presence, something that mixes well with her ability, and how mixes well with Zanmu. Zanmu is also my favorite of the crew. Also that her originally being a Buddhist monk that became an Oni, and somehow is capable to maintain "order" and be good enough to foil the plans of the different families of the Animal Realm is impressive and admirable.
I opened the game trying to find a match for a little too long, so I thought it would be a funny idea to check global steam statistics on how many people are playing, low and behold I was the only person online. How are we meant to play online again? You need people playing it in the first place...
Omg please don't trust the touhou wiki at this early stage and use the actual in game lore. The translations are already finished on the patch center. Chiyari is a Tenkajin not a chupacabra.
I thought that this game was great, i love it even tho the balancing is a bit funny (btw zun commented he consideres patching the game in the tournament, so if he does it would improve the game a ton)
Pretty good coverage of the game this far! I will say though, I had a hunch the game would be so polarising since day 1 on the virtue of ZUN mentioning it was going to be different... Which led to me prematurely making a server for the game even though it wasn't out yet lol. Granted the hindsight is in how people who played Soku weren't as welcoming to the float fighters especially with HMs initial reception. We're a month out from release but there have already been some nice nuggets coming out lately. There have been things said on Chiyari counterplay where mainly Yuuma is notably good at surviving with the spirits around due to her c1. That's generally why she's pretty high up. Another thing is that currently in development we have a netplay client that works league's better than the official netplay. It's currently only delay based but it's a night and day difference compared to the base games netcode. I think someone might be working on something for replays also? I dunno I might be spewing nonsense on that end. Point is though, even if the game has been pretty polarising the community has been doing their best to make it all work in the end. Even if we have to work with something pretty whacky we all just want it to be fun for those wanting to get involved anyway.
Fun game, maybe i would play on local, but i dont see much drive to play the story again after finishing it, maybe when the full translation is ready, but this game i would say is a pretty good entry point for the phantasmagoria games, mainly thanks to the manual and forgiving story mode.
Well, here are my opinions and funnies about this game (they can be bad, of course): 📌 Rin has been properly punished for ruining everyone's 1CC clears waaay back at TH11 lol 📌 Chiyari is... kinda cute lol? I mean, when I saw her, I immediately thought she looks like Aunn but from Hell, also Hecatia T-Shirt brand confirmed lol 📌 Ran Yakumo ❤️ 📌 Once again, we got a fanon explosion due to the mistranslation where Hisami is a masochistic stalker of Zanmu, but I kinda like that too ig? 📌 Netplay sucks even with VPN 📌 Enoko is very cute doggo and is need to be protected at all costs UPD: 📌 Yuuma's portrait is so cute, I want to waddle and squish her (prob thx to Flan)
I wouldn't be so sure for Rin tho... Her shot and C1 are pure concentrated garbage but she pretty much steamrolls most characters with little efforts by spamming her C2 and C3. To give you an idea of how broken her attacks are, she's the only character apart from Chiyari that can actually kill the opponent in story mode, rather than beating the boss.
@@johan-nn6frIt wasn't. Touhou Wiki editors are just Touhou Wiki editors. It'd be one thing if it were the single line in her profile suggesting it was merely 'adoration', but she has way too many battle quotes along similar lines for it to be platonic. The specific phrase was edited from 'crush' to 'adoration' on the pretense that it was rarely used to mean romantic feelings, but you can definitely find it being used in those contexts as well.
Missed opportunity for not including Hecatia and Clownpiece as playable characters in this game. So much stuff about Hell, and not the Hell American Fairy and Goddess of Hell?
Even though the game was a bit broken i was really happy that i got Touhou 19 on August 13 for my Birthday although i now wish i could understand the story more.
11:14 honestly, I think people are low key kinda sleeping on Nazarin. Her shot damage is low and it combined with her scope can be unwieldy if you’re not careful but her attacks are actually pretty good. People aren’t dodging her ex level 8 and pendulums on the enemy screen stop enemy shots slowing their gauge build up and combine that with killing pacified spirits (which counters some characters) and you honestly have a perfectly workable character. Just give her a damage card.
Touhou 19 Is just REALLY close to be one of the greatest Touhou games out there. I think the best aspect Is that every character feels very distinctive, either for playing as or playing against
Well if you consider it's flaws it can be the worst too, i think it's not good because i don't think removing replays and scoring is a good feature considering it's been there for a while now, and the netplay brings this game down
@@OK4Lisateur I'm just saying it gameplay wise, most of the characters are fun to use (PoFV was very samey due to the limited things everyone could do), and can at least try to defeat the AI, but with Enoko and Chiyari it's simply unfair to the point of it no longer being fun, Zanmu at least have a very exploitable Boss that fastens the flow of the game. And with the severely underpowered characters it's just dull (trying to use Saki Is a chore) i could get the fun in using Cirno and even Mystia in PoFV, but with Nazrin and even Sanae it's just not worth it.
@@Eltipoquevisteayer ZUN made a multiplayer game with bad characters, i think making a multiplayer game with bad characters isn't good game design, but they suck because multiplayer was implemented later in developpement (no thought put into balance), so even gameplay wise having unusable character isn't good if you're going to make a versus game anyways except for the challenge but there's a moment when bad is too bad
@@OK4Lisateur Idk, I've haven't tried net play but playing against the AI has been fun, the story at one point it's just a chore. As for bad/good characters, the fun Is there, just needed some balancing to make you consider most of the options.
The netplay for the demo can only be described as a powerpoint presentation. Believe it or not, me and my friend we're laughing our asses off while playing it, and legit had a good amount of fun.
Personally, I won't compare Chiyari's brokenness to Meta Knight's brokenness in Brawl. (WARNING: I am not a Brawl Expert nor an expert in Touhou 19, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt.) It is true that Brawl is focused a lot more on a casual audience and contains more content that catered to said audience, such as Subspace Emissary (which was absolutely amazing). But it is important to recognize that a possible reason for Brawl's casualness was as a result of the Melee Competitive scene which Nintendo discouraged. This may be a reason the devs added new anti-competitive features, like random tripping. Meta Knight is broken because, in the right hands, he can perform combos that can absolutely destroy any character he is faced against, counter tripping by being in the air, and glide, allowing him to recover from literally anywhere. I am not sure if Touhou 19 is supposed to be catered to a more casual audience. If it is, then why isn't there more features, like replays, extra stages, or some extra features, to enhance the casual experience to a more party-game-like experience. I mean, Touhou 9 has more features than Touhou 19 and these features cater to more to both a casual and competitive audience, like replays, a (somewhat) balanced character roster, and extra mode. In addition, Touhou 19's mechanics are not as significant as Brawl's. Chiyari is broken because, regardless of whose hands she is in, she can summon those weird spirits orbs that chase players and (almost) never go away, leading to weird situations where the player is cornered and can't escape. I feel that Meta Knight is evidence for Brawl's brokenness (mechanic-wise), but Chiyari is just a broken character who needs nerfs. In this way, I would compare her to... _Bayonetta._ To keep it short, Bayonetta is broken because she has features that make her broken (*cough* *cough* Witch Time *cough* *cough*) and the solution to this was to nerf the character to be less annoying. Chiyari has a broken mechanic, it should be nerfed in order to make fighting her far less painful.
Something amazing about Smash is that twice in a row, the worst character in the game was a counter to the strongest one. Ganondorf in Brawl is horrendous, but he for some reason does better than expected against Meta Knight. Jiggles in Smash 4 is at least playable, but still kinda sucks...and coincidentially kicks Bayonetta's butt because her broken combo-design makes her go into into the rest-hitbox.
I 100%ed the game and enjoyed it! I think the only sore spots for me were being forced to play Tsukasa and Aunn's gamemode (Tsukasa especially feels like agony to play), and the Chiyari spirits spawning on your location. Balance is definitely needed (especially since damage matters so much in this game in the vs mode), but overall it feels good.
I really do believe that having Mima back for this one would have been great. I mean it’s a story about hell and who is the notable boss of hell from pc98 Mima. However at the same time the story won’t warrant her appearance. Maybe in Touhou 20 when the climax to the hell story comes to hopefully a close
Zanmu is definitely "the best waifu" of the TH19 cast. Mamizou is still the best waifu, don't even question it. And it's fantastic that she's finally a playable character in the mainline game (aside from fighting spin-offs).
I wonder if there ever will be a review about Touhou 18 since the card system is probably the best mecanic Touhou games ever had. Compared to this game, I feel like that’s the one Touhou game were ZUN did the most right.
I could have swron Chiyari was banned from competitive play already edit: you know, you refering to Saki as a hard extra boss makes me wonder if i got too lucky beating her first try the first time i got to her edit2: My first impresion of Chiyari was "she looks like a hobo", but after the initial phase, i grew fond of her desing for some reason, maybe reddit had to do something about that, idk edit3: i just call the charge attacks l1, l2 and so on
I beat Saki on my second try. Meanwhile, Alice, Flandre, Ran, and Yukari are other Extra Stage bosses I've beaten that took me dozens of tries to beat on my first time. Saki is *definitely* one of the easier ones.
Some of the missing features (especially spell card practice) are extremely frustrating but I LOVE all the new characters and how we have so many different stories to play through. Some minor characters like Seiran have been fleshed out in a way I really like. The music is beautiful and innovative. Honestly it feels great to just settle in with a beer and knock out one of the lower-difficulty character stories. Overall I am positive on the game but I understand people's dislike of it. I think if it had stayed in the oven for a few more months to straighten out the practice modes I wouldn't have any real complaints. If a mod solves this then I'll be a very happy camper
For me personally I enjoyed going through Reimu's, Marisa's and Ran's story, but playing as Sanae in her story felt down right impossible even on Normal. Also I'm kinda in the same boat where I prefer PoFV over 19 as a game since 19 doesn't feel even remotely replayable which imo is the keyword for it.
Ok, something I need to point out: there's Gran Turismo 4 race menu music at around 8:00 & I was NOT ready to hear that. (First comment on a Suwawako video & it's about GT of all things.)
I remember someone on discord defended this game for not having replay mode or score, 2 very basic features with "design philosophy". lol I didn't know making bad games and removing basic features was a "design philosophy" What an awful excuse, that can excuse any bad game.
Honestly I don’t know the guy’s argument but he’s probably right. Replay mode and score don’t really make a whole lot of sense in this game. Score would arguably be the worst of the two items as it would incentivize you to draw out story mode in super lame ways to farm graze. The game was already rushed, why spend resources on stuff that wasn’t important to this vs based design?
it's not that hard dude, touhou fans are like pokemon fans, as long as zun makes it they will defend to death they don't have the notion that liking something flawed or bad is okay
@@marcar9marcar972 I checked the messages again, this is just laughably stupid. "ZUN’s philosophy has always been about making games that he finds fun to make and play. He probably thought the removal of a scoring and replay system to have a more fun experience was ultimately for the better." Do I have to explain why this is awful reasoning?
@@marcar9marcar972"It would incentivise drawing out the story mode in lame ways". You just described TH7 score runs. Without cap tho, yes, score makes sense to remove. Replays tho? Ehhhhh, not really.
Chiyari is totally busted; but Reimu honestly is not far behind. Best defence, good power, best lv4 in the game and one of the best lv3's. Chiyari is Chiyari tier; and Reimu is SS ahead of everyone else. Also another display of Chiyari is her being the only character who can reliably kill the AI in story. Oh; and it's not JUST Chiyari's lv3. Her lv2 strengthens her lv3; makes the flames bigger and last longer. [Also her scope is Reimu's but it deals damage]
I find this funny because as a casual Zanmu is easily the most iconic character. She's a pretty weird final boss, made everyone fight each other so they wouldnt launch a coordinated attack on Gensokyo. Her theme is pretty iconic too, with those mongolian vocals/instruments.
Every aspect of Chiyari is silly lol She has the so "ugly it loops back to being kinda cute" vibe (to me at least), she looks like she shops in the same store as Hecatia tbh, that drug dealer chuppacabra look is great. Also girl make the AI rage quit with her purple spirit balls and another million bullets. So broken that she got banned for good. Truly one of the 2hus of all time,
Tbh i guess my main complain would be that Chiyari and Enoko are fundamentaly UNFAIR, something that it's ironically rare in touhou. Like yes, the game is dificult, but there was always strategy to most bosses, but there's simply no strategy for Chiyari, even imposible spell card gave you tools to overcome the bullcrap and even then there were strategies for clearing these spells sans items.
I haven’t really gotten much of a chance to play 19 multiplayer proper yet. Most I have is using Parsec to play with someone (it’s more usable than the actual online mode but it isn’t perfect or that good either). Despite this I have has fun for what it is, I am just happy 17 stuff has a lot of relevance in this game. If I compare purely the single player campaigns I did prefer 19 over 9 so far, but also 19s single player is way different to the actual intended gameplay so not really fair to compare there.
Well I’ll just give my thoughts on UDOALG here: Albeit before that I will say i genuinely did not care about the game nor news surrounding the game until about a week after it released so maybe that might have have an effect on my verdict but personally I think Unfinished Dreams Of All Living Ghosts is Great. While yes it’s real unbalanced considering that Chiyari is Brawl Meta Knight as well as Reimu and Zanmu being similarly OverPowered ( and also has a very similar name to a certain Tengu that I dispise, though that could just be conspiracy on my part) and meanwhile Sanae, Nazirin, Aunn and Mamonzu(I may have spelt that wrong) are the ambassadors of Gensokyo’s Finest, none of whom would survive a western shootout in the boondocks. The other stuff is good in my opinion: The Game’s Fun, Son Biten’s My Favorite Newhu and as per usual the soundtrack is good Particularly Yumma’s Theme is GOATED and some others like the themes of the other beast leaders are great as well. Also on an unrelated note pardner I’m staring to really like Saki, both because of her Theme, I find her fun to play as and because Beating People with Brute Force Alone is kinda my Modeus Operandi. And on a slightly more related note do y’all have any tips for playing as her. Edit oh yeah and now that I think about it it is odd that there is no replay system.
Honestly still it's impressive Zun managed to make around 19 games which is a my opinion very insane which most would move on with the first three games and then work on the next franchise. Zun however unbelievably persist the franchise and constantly make it more and more creative and interesting, I mean seriously that is not a trait easy to accomplish even final fantasy having many mainline games all the developers worked the developers who worked on the classic isn't present with the modern final fantasy. Like so many different changes and different teams and stuff working on different final fantasy games. Zun however consistently still works on each mainline Touhou game without getting replaced by either successor or different company which is seriously amazing kind of persistence and determination that is admirably. Which is even more impressive to me is making 19 games without forgetting what the original vision of the games he is making compared to final fantasy that eventually loses its original identity and just becomes a complete stranger to itself. Anyway enough of my crazy little rambling, all I'm just going to say still I am amazed of his accomplishments.
i do love how they fresh out ran story thought, over all story is alright and i will always see this game as casual fun time (also saki finally got right arm)
w...wait wait wait...how can your youtube seems like the old day suwawako? can you give explanation to this, im curious and wanna try that too, thank you
I really love playing this game, the idea of the gameplay, and the characters, to the point of doing every Lunatic 1CC. But the netcode + how broken the game is really depressing.
This genuinely the first time i wash my pride and tune down the level from lunatic only to hard. I cant say the game is bad cause i enjoy playing it but i say it could be way better in terms of gameplay.
In my opinion Reimu is breaking Touhou 19 more than Chiyari. Reimu is better than Chiyari at cheeseing weak characters such as Aunn and characters that summoning C3 Reimu has made 10 out of 19 characters useless in competitive games.
I like the game. It just have a few hiccups that greatly impact it. For example my game won't progress past stage 1 anymore. I'll just get stuck on the new card screen
I'm thankful for Chiyari just for being the only one that can land an actual hit on the bot in easier modes 😂 but yeh, might not be competitive material
In terms of gameplay experience UDoaLG is better than PoFV. I don't have to destroy the Z key just to shoot and the single player has a clear gameplan to end the stages, while PoFV drags on forever until the CPU decides to let you win. Also UDoaLG has a much better story and plot structure. It sucks that the game misses some basic features however. My personal theory is that the card system ended up breaking the engine and ZUN couldn't figure out how to fix it. Replays and score will obviously come back for the next game... I think. I'd be worried if TH20 goes back to its standard cardless gameplay and they're still missing.
Admit it we all know you'll forgive and instant love this game if it has Suwako Jokes aside,I never realized this game was divisive,I thought everyone loves it as much as the prior titles but i guess it's just the causal audience not the competitive one. I am one of those weirdo who enjoys the franchise for its casual side, characters, music and even lore and this game is no exception too and yet never given myself a chance to play cus i feel like i am not ready yet, maybe one day i'll definitely play them all.
It's a broken game, thus I have the guilty pleasure of breaking it even more by doing some Reimu or Zanmu vs Orin CPU matches on VS mode. Yep, Reimu's Lv2 is the ultimate weapon at breaking Orin and the game with her. Also, that Lv2 can literally speedkill bosses. Unrelated note but Ran's last appearance before this game was in Violet Detector.
I like your last point about the fact that it's not your thing and that it's okay. It doesn't necessary make it a bad game, even though I don't want to play it too. I like it for the "universe" but not for the gameplay. And to be honnest, it was already the case with PoFV, some people still prefer to play Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream, but that's less pronounced because the two games share a lot of similarities. UDoALG is very different from PoDD and PoFV, so that's also why some people don't find themselves in this game, they were probably expecting something similar to PoDD/PoFV but got something different. And yeah, Chiyari is broken, but PoDD and PoFV both had broken characters too, so it's not something that would make this game a bad game for me. Just a game that ain't my stuff. And it's coming from someone who loves playing Touhou 04/11 and 18 the most, so I like various styles of touhou.
I see some people dickriding Zun and it just show how the fans will swallow the slop he puts out I knew it was over when i saw people defend the shitty netplay (of a supposedly finished product he sold btw) and the removal of the scoring and replay which is an annoyance at best, having to record over playing in real time sucks ass No UDaLG isn't groundbreaking and you have no reason to play it over POFV except for the new characters and that's it
My thoughts exactly. I think Touhou 19 having the firing, charge and bomb buttons separate was the best change, but Reimu's C2 demonstrates how the cast of Touhou 19 are EXTREMELY weak. Literally, pofv Cirno (worst in that game) would smash half the cast thanks to L2 spam. Sure, those can defend the game saying, "everything ZUN puts in the game is intentional"... yeah, definitely doesn't sound like you made a mistake in your drawing and you went along with it. It really does worry me how ZUN is rushing his craft, like yes it's cool we are getting games every year, but if it suffers like this? I am worried for the guy. I really wish there was a way we could tell him to slow down. (I mean, I ironically did that and I think my craft is increasing in quality, so I say it'd be worth a try!)
So this game is beloved for, one could say, it's "soul", cast of characters, story, being fun to just play casually or as someone interested in it's charm or characters, and yet is defined by odd design decisions, mistakes, poor netplay, broken design elements entirely and a catastrophically broken character that became associated with the game despite being meant to just be a newcomer? Never thought you'd review Brawl (okay that's a dumb comparison but Meta Knight is funny)
I still think the issues with Meta Knight were greatly exacerbated by the way people play at those tournaments, and a lack of options from Nintendo. His moveset with clubbing items is bad-mediocre with short range and unremarkable attacks, and his Final Smash absolutely sucks (you have to get in close range for a special grab that people can spotdodge, AND it barely does any damage/knockback for a FS). His strength is all in his base form, which is the only form tournaments use. If there had just been a way to make items not random (say, choose a clubbing item to spawn with on each new stock, or have a dedicated button for a once-per-match Final Smash, no spawns during matches), other characters' item movesets would have made it much less of a problem. Beamsaber Peach absolutetly destroys Beamsaber Meta Knight
Generally, i dont like split screen Touhou game. But I still play them because of the Story, music and the new characters. That's it. I just into Classic Touhou Danmaku gameplay than split screen danmaku.

It's true ZUN succeeded in that regard, he's quite good at making parallel stories (I.E POFV)
And i think the recent characters are fairly good and fresh, i wasn't looking forward to them since UM was... something, but it made me appreciate them a lot more.
As for the Netplay, it's broken and everyone will use 3rd party modifications, ZUN was better off not including Netplay in UDaLG so late in developpement, or create the game with netplay in mind from the start considering its state
>universal praise
it is because no one wants to play a blatantly unfinished game
I agree, it's pretty epic that ZUN released a half baked game because grape girl appeals to my yuri fetish. Actually playing Touhou games is cringe anyway.
I actually think Chiyari being "ugly" is good characterization. It shows she's more casual and laid-back, design-standing-out aside.
Also, I remember some mentioning she's actually really skinny(see her damaged dialogue portraits). Especially stands out, because ZUN never really gives any character distinct body types in his own artwork, apart from height(and even that's obscured a bit for gameplay's sake).
But you can make a character casual and still make their design good .~.
@@TheLugiaSong True, but I'm not called "Bingles Praise" for nothing.
Chiyari was also literally a shut in. Orin even asks her if she's okay going outside lol
i would like to drop something art design wise, regarding chiyari. i know its very fun to use "le drugs" as a joke on chiyari, due to her design, but it is way more intricate than that. starting off with the first: needles and blood vials. chiyari as a chubacapra as mentioned draws blood from their victims, very apt and something that fits her, being a hell being. though it is a bit more deep. she draws blood from herself too, in order to use those attacks. with that in mind, her design begins to clear up. her green shirt is actually a green hospital gown, but with a print to make it look more detailed. a very common concept, is to get blood drawn at hospitals. may it be for donating blood or help other in need quickly. your blood type matters! this will also explain her way of being around, shes slow, has slurred speech, which is common symptoms of getting blood drawn.
Fiction constantly tells us that blood magic is not banned from use because usage is dangerous or cruel(when using someone else's blood), but rather because it is absolutely broken lmao.
touhou games are children's games?
From a mechanics perspective, I feel like this type of game could become an instant classic if instead of it being made by just one person it was made by a small indie team that could balance it really well.
ZUN is ultimately one person, and he likes to experiment and give a lot of personality of the characters through the way they fight. This can sometimes lead to weird or even bad design decisions. I hope that one day the community, or even ZUN himself, can make a patch/mod that better balances the game.
Yeah, I want so much a mod that balances each character
Chiyari is basically the Brawl Meta Knight of the game.

Every aspect of Touhou 19 was completely intentional.
Even if something is intentional, doesn't mean it's good or healthy tbh
@@Suwawako ZUN is our god and you’ll do as he says
Technically, everything is always intentional, but zun made it clear in the Omake.txt that his goal first and foremost was putting as much stuff as he could in a game, and making something creative (and presumably uniquely flawed) that modern ai couldn't. But with a cast of 19, that balance could have only been a mess, so it's good that tournaments have agreed to ban the Chupacabra.

Edit: Actually, lol. I just realized the irony when Touhou 19 does not even have replays. People straight up have no excuse for their ZUNism this time.
I managed to clear Hard Mode with each and every character and I do believe I've spent a lot of time on the game itself too, so here are a couple of suggestions of improvement that would definitely be needed in this otherwise somewhat "unfinished" game:
- bring back scoring system + replays, extra stage would also be nice
- generally speaking, the shooting power of characters are mostly lackluster, so by default the player should be equipped with Narumi's card at least at the beginning of Story Mode
- stacking cards on VS/Online Mode; by unlocking achievements, the player should receive benefits such as +1 or 2 slots for multiple cards to be used during match to make the gameplay more interesting and to take better advantage of the card system (just like in TH18)
- as it's quite easy to fill up the charge-o-meter during boss fights, the intensity level of attacks should be cut in half (for now, if you summon a LVL3 or LVL4 attack, their intensity levels immediately change from LEVEL1 to LEVEL2 and so on making these attacks harder than last time, when it reaches LEVEL8 the game's difficulty quickly turns to lunatic, even if you play on VS mode/normal mode - so my suggestion is for LVL3+4 attacks to remain on the same level twice in row before increasing a level)
- fix Nazrin's/Enoko's/Chiyari's EX attack not to be summoned directly at you forcing you an instant miss
- tone down AI in general, a lot (good thing we have a timer thingy on VS mode though, otherwise a match against AI would barely ever end even on normal mode)
- include a functional Online Mode
About the characters:
- tone down Reimu's LVL2, seriously, stahp. Her LVL3 attack could remain the same but with the small versions of yin-yang orbs instead of the sadistic Misumaru gigantic ones, she would be way more balanced this way
- tone down Marisa's LVL4 boss fight a bit, it's way too unfair and hard compared to many other boss fights
- buff up Sanae's LVL1 attack or at least make it non-homing so it cannot be misdirected
- improve Ran's movement speed a bit, she's supposed to be a fast character right?
- Aunn - who is like the worst playable character to me in the game - should have a bit stronger shot and less crappy exorcism aura
- FIX NAZRIN'S GODDAMN EXORCISM AURA, homing is a good concept but executed horrendously due to its poor speed, it should be way quicker-to-react at least to be useful
- As soon as I've learnt the proper strategy with Orin she doesen't seem like a bad playable character anymore, but she's buggy as hell; using her LVL2 can cause one miss sometimes for no appearant reason unless you stay on the bottom of the screen (or it might be intentional ionno) and her LVL3 attack should be toned the fuck down as its increased level versions can fill up the screen with a lot of fuckin bullets in no time (at least the spirits should cease to fire bullets by the time they arrive to the bottom section of the screen)
- strengthen Tsukasa's shooting power and boss fight while tone down her EX & LVL3 attack for the same reason as with Orin
- buff up Mamizou's LVL3 attack a bit, maybe her LVL4 boss fight too, she seems a bit weaker compared to other characters in terms of these attacks
- strengthen Yachie's shooting power, tone down her EX otters
- strengthen Saki's shooting power, her lasers are not doing shit, I also encountered a bug with her on VS mode; appearantly she cannot be equipped with Marisa's laser card, buff up her LVL4 attack too
- tone down Yuuma's EX eagles, they seem to be the strongest but fastest too among all EX beast spirits, buff up her LVL2 as it's barely inflicting any damage
- make Suika move slower during her LVL4 boss attack (not all exorcism aura types are good against her)
- strengthen Son's shooting power and LVL1 attack, they are so weak
- remove Chiyari from game or at least fix her EX, LVL2 and LVL3 attacks
- buff up Hisami's shooting power, LVL1 & 2 and tone down her LVL3 attack which can crash the game too lol
- tone down Zanmu's EX attacks by toning down her LVL2 too (there should be a limit of how many attacks she can summon to the opponent's screen, same with Orin)

“I feel people appreciated the game for it’s story and design rather than it’s actual gameplay”
Yeah, like that’s new for Touhou. I think a lot of Touhou fans are more of a fan of the idea of Touhou, rather than the games themselves.
It is hilarious how the one game actually being played for being a game is TH1. Simply because the story barely exists, so people only seriously pick it up if they like the gameplay concept.
I'm not even surprised seeing how Touhou is not only more story than gameplay, but the few gameplay it has it's very niche, being a shmup.
The game might be good and bad and so but man, the zun drawings and tasofro gifs are so damn good
The real cool thing about Yuuma's kit is that she expends her scope to slow everything and eat up all the power on the board, and then throw it at the opponent. It's very in character, and it's so much fun that even when they are pretty dodgeable by the computer, you get so much energy and feel so much power build up that you throw absolutely everything you can until it kills the AI.
At least we got a hell of a lot of lore drops, good job ZUN, your world is still as enticing as ever you drunken madlad.

There's a netplay patch lol
Omg please don't trust the touhou wiki at this early stage and use the actual in game lore. The translations are already finished on the patch center.
Chiyari is a Tenkajin not a chupacabra.
it's too late
The tierlist of Touhou 19 is: Chiyari beats Reimu, Reimu beats Yuuma, Yuuma beats Chiyari. The rest of the cast is there
I thought that this game was great, i love it even tho the balancing is a bit funny (btw zun commented he consideres patching the game in the tournament, so if he does it would improve the game a ton)
Link? (Either someone translating what ZUN said or where exactly in the stream he said it).
Yeah a patch would be nice.
Oh, hype
actually dope if true
Patch when???
Well, here are my opinions and funnies about this game (they can be bad, of course):
📌 Rin has been properly punished for ruining everyone's 1CC clears waaay back at TH11 lol
📌 Chiyari is... kinda cute lol? I mean, when I saw her, I immediately thought she looks like Aunn but from Hell, also Hecatia T-Shirt brand confirmed lol
📌 Ran Yakumo ❤️
📌 Once again, we got a fanon explosion due to the mistranslation where Hisami is a masochistic stalker of Zanmu, but I kinda like that too ig?
📌 Netplay sucks even with VPN
📌 Enoko is very cute doggo and is need to be protected at all costs
UPD:
📌 Yuuma's portrait is so cute, I want to waddle and squish her (prob thx to Flan)
the hisami thing was a mistranslation?
@@johan-nn6fr I heard smth like that when the translations were on Day 1 of launch
I'm glad other people find Enoko adorable too.
Uh-oh. The war has begun.
I wouldn’t really call it a war. Most people with an issue is either going to forget or leave.

Personally, I won't compare Chiyari's brokenness to Meta Knight's brokenness in Brawl.
(WARNING: I am not a Brawl Expert nor an expert in Touhou 19, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt.)
It is true that Brawl is focused a lot more on a casual audience and contains more content that catered to said audience, such as Subspace Emissary (which was absolutely amazing).
_Bayonetta._
To keep it short, Bayonetta is broken because she has features that make her broken (*cough* *cough* Witch Time *cough* *cough*) and the solution to this was to nerf the character to be less annoying.
I could have swron Chiyari was banned from competitive play already
edit: you know, you refering to Saki as a hard extra boss makes me wonder if i got too lucky beating her first try the first time i got to her
edit2: My first impresion of Chiyari was "she looks like a hobo", but after the initial phase, i grew fond of her desing for some reason, maybe reddit had to do something about that, idk
edit3: i just call the charge attacks l1, l2 and so on
Pretty sure Saki is one of the easiest Extra Stages bosses ever.
@@ImmacHn she is
I beat Saki on my second try. Meanwhile, Alice, Flandre, Ran, and Yukari are other Extra Stage bosses I've beaten that took me dozens of tries to beat on my first time. Saki is *definitely* one of the easier ones.
@@FullHitPoints Yukari and Ran are also kinda on the easy side, they have spellcards that are impossible to get hit on
Some of the missing features (especially spell card practice) are extremely frustrating but I LOVE all the new characters and how we have so many different stories to play through.
2:51 crying so hard, maybe Touhou 20 guys... maybe Touhou 20.
touhou is my favourite sport
You enjoy Touhou, but do you enjoy the project part?
there will Never Ever be another game like Touhou 19
Ding ding ding 🛎️ 🍪
Bruh i finished all th19 3 days ago and i can say i don't wanna fight against Suika ever again
I CAN'T BEAT AUNN'S STORY BECAUSE YACHIE KEEPS EATING MY ASS.
Besides that, I liked the game :D
For me personally I enjoyed going through Reimu's, Marisa's and Ran's story, but playing as Sanae in her story felt down right impossible even on Normal.
Also I'm kinda in the same boat where I prefer PoFV over 19 as a game since 19 doesn't feel even remotely replayable which imo is the keyword for it.
Ok, something I need to point out: there's Gran Turismo 4 race menu music at around 8:00 & I was NOT ready to hear that.
(First comment on a Suwawako video & it's about GT of all things.)
I remember someone on discord defended this game for not having replay mode or score, 2 very basic features with "design philosophy". lol
I didn't know making bad games and removing basic features was a "design philosophy" What an awful excuse, that can excuse any bad game.
@@marcar9marcar972 then just don't rush the game, delay the game so it can be better. Or is it "Deisgn Philosophy" to rush out games?
it's not that hard dude, touhou fans are like pokemon fans, as long as zun makes it they will defend to death
they don't have the notion that liking something flawed or bad is okay
@@marcar9marcar972
I checked the messages again, this is just laughably stupid.
"ZUN’s philosophy has always been about making games that he finds fun to make and play. He probably thought the removal of a scoring and replay system to have a more fun experience was ultimately for the better."
Do I have to explain why this is awful reasoning?
Every aspect of Chiyari is silly lol
She has the so "ugly it loops back to being kinda cute" vibe (to me at least), she looks like she shops in the same store as Hecatia tbh, that drug dealer chuppacabra look is great. Also girl make the AI rage quit with her purple spirit balls and another million bullets. So broken that she got banned for good. Truly one of the 2hus of all time,
You use reimu because she's broken. I use her because I refuse to win the game without a 1cc so she's all I got
Reimu’s Boring though.
@@ultimapower6950 Not using anyone else until I 1cc. If I die I quit, so I literally don't have anyone else.
Tbh i guess my main complain would be that Chiyari and Enoko are fundamentaly UNFAIR, something that it's ironically rare in touhou.
Like yes, the game is dificult, but there was always strategy to most bosses, but there's simply no strategy for Chiyari, even imposible spell card gave you tools to overcome the bullcrap and even then there were strategies for clearing these spells sans items.
spell card rules:"I exist"
TH19:"No, you don't."
0:45 im willing to bet noone knows where this music is from xd
Edit oh yeah and now that I think about it it is odd that there is no replay system.
oh wow, my tier list got noticed lol
that pronunciation of hecatia really caught me off guard
There should be a danmaku cap so that it wouldn’t literally fill the screen
Also Nazrin is basically impossible
w...wait wait wait...how can your youtube seems like the old day suwawako? can you give explanation to this, im curious and wanna try that too, thank you
I really love playing this game, the idea of the gameplay, and the characters, to the point of doing every Lunatic 1CC.
Reimu is better than Chiyari at cheeseing weak characters such as Aunn and characters that summoning C3
Reimu has made 10 out of 19 characters useless in competitive games.
TH19 really is the tale of 3 characters being great, one or 2 being rogue counterpicks and everyone else is not great.
I love the eggplant woman, really funny design
He'll fix the game in the Mima DLC, I swear it!
Touhou if it was good:
Just like my sanity
I literally just subscribed like an hour before this went up oh my god
I like the game. It just have a few hiccups that greatly impact it. For example my game won't progress past stage 1 anymore. I'll just get stuck on the new card screen
I had this happen to me too. It fixed itself when I set player two to something other than "Gamepad1" on the key config menu.
@@H1_R3Z will try this, thanks
I think. I'd be worried if TH20 goes back to its standard cardless gameplay and they're still missing.
damn i love grape juise....
8:47 We got Scorestreaks in Touhou before GTA 6
Chiyari isn't Brawl Meta Knight. Reimu is Brawl Meta Knight. Chiyari is Brawl Meta Knight on crack.
SSB4 Bayonetta
Zun drinking beer from a jar is a mood in an of itself.
His Uni self never left him.
Goes without saying, but whether or not you like this game is a matter of opinion. If you don't like it, cool. If you do like it, cool.
Also, Reimu is god-tier as she rightfully should be.
Yeah honestly, and discussion is good too
Admit it we all know you'll forgive and instant love this game if it has Suwako
Jokes aside,I never realized this game was divisive,I thought everyone loves it as much as the prior titles but i guess it's just the causal audience not the competitive one.
I am one of those weirdo who enjoys the franchise for its casual side, characters, music and even lore and this game is no exception too and yet never given myself a chance to play cus i feel like i am not ready yet, maybe one day i'll definitely play them all.
It's only the purely competitive side that doesn't like things it did. Namely, removal of replays. This video calling it divisive is a dramatization.
I'm recommended for you try PVP mod for Madness Project Nexus.
3:46 HOLY SHIT THATS ACTUALLY ME
Where can i watch this masterpiece? 6:54
I see some people dickriding Zun and it just show how the fans will swallow the slop he puts out
I knew it was over when i saw people defend the shitty netplay (of a supposedly finished product he sold btw) and the removal of the scoring and replay which is an annoyance at best, having to record over playing in real time sucks ass
No UDaLG isn't groundbreaking and you have no reason to play it over POFV except for the new characters and that's it
My thoughts exactly.
@@Suwawako The idea of Cirno having become genuinely more relatively powerful by technicality of not being included it hilarious. Reverse-powercreep.
Can we get much higher?
AHHHH I LOVE SMELLY CHIYARI AND HER HAIRY P-
I love the new characters and their lore, but not the glitches and outdated engine. For the new competitive meta, we all agree: BAN Chiyari.
Wait I'm on! 12:56
Never thought you'd review Brawl
(okay that's a dumb comparison but Meta Knight is funny)
You pretty much said everything i think about this game, ain't no wae this game is better than PoFV, but it still pretty cool tbh.
Generally, i dont like split screen Touhou game. But I still play them because of the Story, music and the new characters. That's it. I just into Classic Touhou Danmaku gameplay than split screen danmaku.
Chiyari my beloved.
