    What is the next next step if it *is* lead paint? What do you do then?

      Great question. If you're a homeowner or DIY'er, it is advisable to call in an EPA lead-certified painting contractor if lead is detected. Every state has different regulations and rules. A good place to start is on the EPA website, where you can find certified contractors in your area and learn more about the rules: www.epa.gov/lead/how-can-i-find-certified-renovation-firm-my-area

      Depending on how much law you want to break, how much lead you want to ingest, and how much soil you want to contaminate with the lead paint chips and dust. 6 mil plastic from Amazon tends to feet out, 2x4 on top to hold it down, a p100 mask, tyvek suit from Amazon, gloves, dustless brand hepa vacuum (not regular vacuum), dustless brand scraping hose attachment are a good start.

    The problem with scraping old peeling paint is, "How far do I go with it?"

    Well, as I thought... this is the RIGHT WAY to prep to do an exterior paint job.
    However, I'm looking for an EASY WAY.
    I've painted it before... 12 years ago. It was a lot of work.
    Doing a lot of work ONCE is bad enough... but to have to do it over and over and over... is just not my cup of tea.
    So... I'm calling my local Home Depot and the "boys" are coming with VINYL SIDING tomorrow.

    The scotch bright type 4" grinding wheels remove all the paint really fast down to bare wood. Youll use a fair amount of pads but they dont clog up like sanding does you dont have to scrape and when your done the surface is ready for fresh paint.
    And the end result is what lookes like painted new wood.
    Id just go to town on that house saving hours of unnecessary work and a lot faster then scraping loose paint. Its like running the wood in a planer down past the dry cracked wood surface into solid wood.
    The paint jobs going to last a lot longer.

    What do you do with dryrot or damaged siding? Do you at least replace the rotted areas before paint or call a carpenter?

    • @HydeTools
      @HydeTools  8 місяців тому +2

      It's highly recommended to replace rotting or damaged siding. Once you've removed the siding, you should also inspect the structural elements beneath the siding (sheathing, wall studs, sill plates, corner posts, etc.) to ensure the damage hasn't spread beyond the siding. Some painting professionals will take on siding replacement if it's minimal, but you'll likely need to call a carpenter if the damage has reached structural components. Good luck!

    What about caulking?

    • @HydeTools
      @HydeTools  Місяць тому

      Great question. There are a variety of scenarios where caulk is called for during exterior house prep. We recently made a video addressing the need to caulk where siding meets trim (you can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/6VNjBZ942BY/v-deo.htmlsi=_RaQY-b8wJMqw5ZK). But there are many other scenarios where caulk may be appropriate. We'll keep this in mind as a possible future video topic -- thanks!

      Alot of different building materials are porous and you definitely want some completely dry depending on what you are applying on top. Like if you are plastering brick or block you actually want a little moisture so the plaster adheres better. Paint prefers dry surfaces.
