I have been trying different channels on UA-cam and still had the same error. The most satisfying feeling is when you follow a tutorial once and your system is back to it's original self. This tip helped tons, wouldn't be the first thing coming to my mind that the damm thing was getting confused lol.
That said, when I was the process, the fucker said the data was corrupted, had to format again, thankfully worked after, was kinda nervous that the port connection was fucked up something that I wouldn't be able to fix...

this was really the best video I found on the topic, nothing was working with my other usb so I bought a new hard drive and new 1gb usb on amazon, removed controller cable and the update worked!! thanks so much man I was worried I bought a bricked ps3 now I can finally play skate 3 again lets gooooo

If I wasn't having problems with this error and with the help of this video solved it... I wouldn't have believed the solution in my head, I'll be saying the solution here is not logical and it's something else. Thank you got my PlayStation back and I just subscribed.
It worked fixed my system corruption loop on my ps3 and upgraded to a different SATA hard drive from 160GB > 1TB then I couldn’t transfer the data from the fucked up HDD so I had to use the computer to do these steps and it worked now the PS3 works quicker, no more crashes or strange audio bugs finally can get CFW next and optimise the console properly. But I am also happy to play GTA IV again that was my main motivator. Thank you mate you’ve fixed my console from miles away across the world.

I did this with two usb as soon as i removed controller cable i put the second usb in and it did the trick.

I used this method on a Slim model 3001a. I used a 256gb memory stick in fat32 format to install a SSD to cut down on overall heat. Unplugging the controller was what made it work for me. Thanks for the video!

My bro gave me a PS3 ages ago after he got a Series X, and after maxing out my capacity for SSDs on my PC recently 'cause of Prime Day--I figured I'd re-use a spare 850 Evo 500GB laying around instead of just letting it collect dust. I know there's a debate over whether there's any benefits of an SSD on a PS3, because of SATA I...but it has to be better in some way than the 10+ years old HDD that was in it. So I had to do a re-install. xD

Thanks for this! I watched a video about upgrading my hard drive to a new 1TB and it left out this information. So after the old data was backed up, and the new hard drive was installed I was stuck. This is exactly what I needed to get the new hard drive running.

Right on! Had this same issue on my bros ps3 installed cfw decided later to upgrade to 1tb sata. While upgraded mine to 1tb sata then done cfw. I have noticed on my cfw if controller is plugged in xmb wigs out. I tried this unplugging and it reformatted new sata drive and updated back to cfw! Awesome video thank you!
After hours of messing around, it was this simple fix, I was using a 32GB USB adaptor with a micro sd card and it kept on asking for the update file, so I found a 2GB USB stick and the update worked first time, great video.

Yeah my first jailbreak I thought I was smart had a micro sd card and adapter that was the issue 32gb flash stick no issues however I found a USB stick the size of mouse 2.4 dongle that supports a micro SC card. That has been working perfectly since I have about a dozen 512 to 1 tb works great formatted to ntfs exfat for installing ps3 games without needing to split the files due to fat 32. Also worked great for installing cfw and backups from old hdd to new ssd . Am..son where I found the usb to micro sd card.

for me is still not working i am using a 8GB usb ps3 super slim and the update downloaded is the 4.88

Thank you so much!!! I was doing everything correctly and the console could not recognize the usb drive update. I tried formatting again and again, no luck. Finally unplugging the controller as soon as I press start/select worked!!!

what i had to find out: DONT FORGET TO SET THE PARTITION TABLE TO "MBR" (instead of GPT) you can google how to do that or just rightklick "this pc", manage, drive management, format the whole drive, then you can rightklick on it and say "convert to MBR" or just use "ease us partition magic"

I used a large USB stick like 256GB and it worked. MUST unplug the usb cable connecting the joystick while it is checking the update file. Thanks for the post

Ok I'm trying to do the same thing but it's with a hard drive I swapped, do I still have to use a flash drive for the console to recognize the new hard drive?
pulling out the controller worked! and it didn't force me to format the drive either, which is a major blessing because that's a decade of game saves that are not backed up 💀
legend mate,,, 2 counts!!!! 1 being use anything other than google chrome to download , and 2 the usb wire i was using was a powered green light 1 and my god what a headache until i pulled it out at the start select stage... so can confirm that a normal usb would be better. thanks

hey I still get the same message it won't update... it says 2.70 but then it shows the data not applicble error message but everytime i try with ps3 on it says on every single update file "data corrupted" socan't seem to update either way--al this struggle is just to be able to get ps3 and ps2 games on the ps3... it's jailbroken but still can't manage.. i have it all, webman managuns multiman.. but can't seem to get ps3 to read/detect pkg or iso files.. what am i missing? is ter a way without having to update? i have no 2gb flash drive only 32 or 64 and have no way of getting a smaller one right now..

Just wanted to say this was very helpful, i was stuck for months on this after scrapping my old hdd, only recently bought a replacement, on the website when it says right click and save as, dont do that, you need to left click it for it to download the correct file and not get corrupted. I tried downloading the file through firefox and it worked perfectly. Think this was the first time i prayed that something worked out for me lol
To quote a Reddit comment that fixed it for me:
Make sure the USB is partitioned as MBR to do this, Open CMD, Type “disk part”, Then “List disk”, Find the USB, Type “Select disk X” (X = the number next to your USB), Type “Clean”, Then “Convert mbr”, Then select the usb by typing “Select disk X” like last time, and type “Create partition primary”, Then “select partition 1”, Then “Active”, Then “Format fs=fat32 label=(the name of the usb) quick” Promise you that if the folders are set up and its not working this is your issue.

@@JaredsGarageYT if you don’t have a corrupted/ burnt out hard drive, I assume it would work. Lucky for me, mine did go bad, and I was forced to buy a whole new hard drive. If this doesn’t work for you, it might just be time to get a new hdd or ssd.
