The brains behind Alestorm, Chris Bowes, actually has three bands, each with a different theme. There's obviously Alestorm which is pirate metal, and he sings and plays the keytar. He plays the keyboard in Gloryhammer, which is a powermetal band which tells a futuristic sci-fi story following the Kingdom of Fife (The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee is a fun song). His newest band is Wizardthrone, which calls itself extreme wizard metal. I don't have a recommendation for that one, but they've only got one album out thus far.
Haven’t heard Alestorm in about a decade. This song’s a lot goofier than I remember them being; I thought they were just a bit tongue in cheek. Still, a very fun song and I love comedy metal bands like Psychostick. Also, the animation in this was incredibly well done; very fluid like rum lol 😂
You should definitely check out their most recent couple of albums it's not all comedic and goofy, they go back and forth a lot. Definitely more goofy then the original albums though so I understand where you are coming from lol
if you haven't listened to this since this video go back and watch the video again with the CC turned on, don't look for other lyric sites go with the cc it's meant to be used you won't regret it.
If youre looking for more Scottish metal, Hellripper is a one-man band from Aberdeen that does indeed rip Hell. "The Nuckelavee" is a recent career highlight with his most explicitly Scottish lyrics.
It's not just Scotland. Their guitarist is Hungarian, so of course they made a song "Magyarorszag" about living the pirate life in the landlocked country of Hungary.
There are a million and one serious songs and metal bands out there, and they are great, but music is about feeling and happy, fun, silly are just as valid an expression as any deep introspection thought provoking attempts to change the world.
Exactly. Music should be fun more than anything. I love a great political or social message being spread through art, but sometimes I need to turn my brain off to chaos of the world and just have a good time.
@thatmelisakelly So what does P.A.R.T.Y. stand for? Peter Alcorn's really tasty yogurt? Pirates are really terrible yachtsmen? People's association of rhinoceros tickers (Yucatan)?
Alestorm is we're on the way home fra work and need something lighthearted what for to listen to loudly. It's also brilliant when you're having a party as well, as long as there aren't sensitive types about.
There were many pirate captains who sold their souls to the Divell for such trifles as bullet invulnerability, incredible luck and so on... But there is only one, who made a deal with Old Harry in exchange for a keytar and a pair of ears that allow him to add some ten knots to speed while sailing a broad reach. All hail cap'n Christopher Bowes!
Alestorm is amazing, very first song I ever heard by them I heard in my local pool hall and was thoroughly surprised by the vocals, 1741 The Battle of Cartagena. by far one of my favorites def recommend it will surprise you
I can’t listen to it, my dude. I will almost certainly start Civil War, because it will make me feel like such a Scottish patriot, but I will start a movement to have Scotland cut in half a Hadrian’s wall, so we’re not connected to England anymore. 😆 🏴

Both of them are more hard rock than heavy metal, but they are both amazing. If you have never heard of them, you should definitely give them a listen. Cheers! 🥃
The artist who did that also made one of a song from the TV cartoon “Donkey Kong Country” known as “pirate’s scorn” Also done by alestorm, a cover at least… it’s pretty good
Yes! Wayyy late to this video but… such is life! I personally think the best album is Sunset On The Golden Age with the title track and 1741 being the best tracks off it… but it’s just great music and such a load of fun! Glad you had a great time! 🤘
Hi Melissa you need to watch The Sensational Alex Harvey Band if you want a good Scottish rock band or Hocus Pocus by Focus if you want any earwax removed
Off-topic, but you asked. The stereotypical pirate we all think of is mostly from one person. Robert Newton as Long John Silver in Dianey's Treasure Island. He used a west country accent for his character and the image stuck.
I don't think I know of a bad song by Alestorm, but I couldn't help thinking that if I were to pick a song to introduce this band to someone new it would not have been this one by a long shot. There are FAR more epic songs that I would have suggested first like "Keelhauled", "Drink", "Mexico", "Tortuga", "Fannybaws", and "Shipwrecked!" I WANT TO SEE YOUR REACTION TO THESE!

Oh, come on, Melisa! How could you become MORE scottish??? Red hair, freckles and bagpipes? For real, if you become more scottish, we need english subtitles! 🤣
Or the Bad News version of Bohemian Rhapsody… for a slightly deeper cut! If you do listen to that one bear in mind it was Brian May playing the guitar parts!

Please throw old Alestorm fans a bone a do a song form the first 4 records back when they were a least semi serious. Such a huge fan of black sails and back through time. I just don’t get this new stuff
Third comment in a row but fuck it. There has been arguments amongst the metal community since the first bands started to stray away from the classic and go in the direction of sublime and the ridiculous. One of the most maligned bands that splits the crowd when it comes to metal heads is Manowar. They don't write the comedy lyrics but what they sing about is often viewed as ridiculous or kitsch but essentially birthed the Scandinavian metal genre (some call it Viking metal.) From those kinds of roots you saw the advent of bands like Dream Evil who went hard into the fantasy metal. You get these shifts and trends in the metal world. The boomer metal crowd always seem to malign anything that isn't classic but there is a fairly substantial niche with bands like psychostick and genre straddling bands like electric callboy. You've got that absurdity that is Dethklok which is extreme comedy metal and they had their own whole cartoon with some of the most ridiculous metal and the most ridiculous animation. In one episode they did a song that was coffee jingle and people were like getting brutally killed as they are singing the song and the song is ridiculous, the antics are ridiculous but it's such incredible musicianship that Dethklok, even as something of a parody shreds with the best of them. You also have Powerwolf who sing about religious werewolf soldiers and have religious themed songs such as "resurrection by erection" and "coleus sanctus" amongst others. Again the lyrics are absurd but the arrangement and the vocal delivery is utterly sublime. Powerwolf demonstrate how to do that really well and still be taken seriously in the metal community. I don't think it would be fair to say writing comedy lyrics is harder than say a ballad or something but to write good comedy lyrics delivered with superb musicianship is a different skill set and not really comparable. Take psychostick and NSFW, the whole song is literally a dude singing the word fuck but it's the way they develop the musicianship behind it. You have Austrian death machine which is essentially an Arnold Schwarzenegger themed parody/tribute metal band. You have alestorm and I think it is the way they deliver the lyrics that makes them so good. Any other band singing songs like that would probably not hit the same way.
You like pirate metal? You like animation? You like hard partying? Then you NEED the antidote to this very song, _SOBER_ by Nanowar of Steel! Sorry, not Scottish (actually Italian), but three out of four ain't bad. (Warning: some bleeping may be required.) And then you can watch _Valhallelujah..._
