Hey bud. I’m having the exact issue. Replaced the thermostat with whatever the parts store gave me and didn’t fix issue. Went to ford dealer and they entered my VIN and tried to give me the thermostat that the truck was built with. I had prior knowledge of the “updated” part with the plastic tip so I told him about that. He went in the back and got it for me. I believe the number is the same as the one you are posting about. Changed it yesterday and still didn’t help. What do you suggest now? I’m leaning towards replacing the water pump now just to see if it helps. Also I am using the orange coolant and I seen on another post that ppl are saying to use the yellow instead. Thoughts?
I have a 2018 XLT. After Cam Phaser replacement this is EXACTLY what was happening. I'd get on the highway at 75 to 80 mph and the engine would heat up. Not completely overheating, but it would heat up enough to raise eyebrows. Also, the electric fan was running almost constantly. It sounded like I was driving a jet airplane! After replacing the thermostat with the new, updated thermostat, this solved EVERYTHING. Running great now!

Excellent job going the distance to take care of the customer! In this case I felt it was the thermostat and pleasantly surprised to hear it was. I also learned some new information about the cooling systems in these newer trucks. Keep coming with the great information. Thank you! 😊 🐶
Thanks Rich. Exact same thing occurred about a week after the cam phaser replacement on my 2018 F150. I noticed when cooling fans were running full speed. Dealer fixed it.
You're the best, Rich! Once again proving why you're an amazing person/mechanic - going above and beyond! Its great you truly have the customer in mind with each job. Thank you!
I had the same situation almost exactly. After phasers we’re replaced on my 18 f150 this past winter, once the weather warmed up, it would consistently get warm and show a digital temp once it reached 228. I saw it get as high as 240ish once. (August at 75-80 mph) Dealer replaced the thermostat, gasket and housing. All good for now. Mileage was roughly 45,000. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much! Had this problem yesterday on my first leg of a 1200 mile drive. Stopped by a ford dealer, bought both parts and brought it in this morning to get replaced and a coolant flush. And voila! No problems whatsoever today. Even got better gas mileage!
I had the same problem after my second timing chain replacement. Dealer changed the water pump, thermostat, and radiator and I still had the problem. Saw another video about the new design thermostat and then saw your video. Ordered the new parts and put it in two days ago. Temperature dropped at least 15 degrees and has not gone into the 220's yet. This appears to have fixed my problem. Thanks for this video. It showed the same problem that I had.
When I had my 2017 (114K) at the dealership for Timing Set and Cam Phasers replaced due to start up rattle, I had them replace the thermostat, water pump, belts, and hoses since I’m keeping the Truck and it was at my Expense. July 2021 No Issues For me it was better to put the extra money while it was tore down and spend the extra money on parts and save some money on labor. Keep the great videos coming!! God Bless
Did you pay all out of pocket for repairs? My cam phasers seem to be going out and I’m sure I now have to pay out of pocket since I never did the recall 🤦🏻♂️
Good information. Remember I was asking you about that no spark but would crank no codes. It was on 5.4 F150. It turns out it was a bad PCM. Thanks for the help.
I’ve seen a pattern of aftermarket thermostats causing slight overheat condition along with the fans running. On the 5.0’s. I only put in O.E in them now.
Thank you...My 2018 Raptor is going in for its 2nd round of cam phaser repairs. The first was at 47K and now again at 97K. Never had any problems with the eng. temps. However, knowing what you just shared, I'll talk with the tech and see if we can upgrade the thermostat. Much appreciated..
Nice work, I've found the same problem on lots of 17-20 F150s. Most are not even overheating but the customer complains of the Engine Fan running high/ loud more than usual. I've monitored the temp and found it runs near 10'C colder with a new thermostat installed, from near overheat to perfect Operating Temp. The Original Thermostats are pretty shitty when closely inspected, they wear and stick closed like u said not allowing full circulation when the engine needs it. The Fan's are so damn good that the thermostat has to be completely failed and the engine worked hard to overheat as the fans just ramp up speed as the temp increases and move a shit ton of air. I suspect most near 100 000kms could benefit from a new thermostat and the yellow coolant but most people don't have long enough drives or notice the fans. Probably that nasty Pink/ Orange coolant that made em fail in the first place.
Which brand thermostat? I just bought a 2018 3.5 ecoboost with 36k miles and I got p0018 and p0021 the 2nd week I owned it and then the CEL went off and the fans have been running hard since then, supposed to be going to a Ford near me since I bought it 3 hours away. Fml
@@joelexline9 Just Oem from the dealer, thhe part numbers are constantly updated for parts that are shitty. As for the Cam codes, kinda odd for the second gen eco to actually set cam codes if its full of clean/ proper oil and somebody hasn't messed up changing the VCT gears. If the Fans Roar all the time and full of coolant its probably not overheating. The same Gens have a common AC problem that causes the Fans the run high. If they start roaring after driving/ high loads, Probably thermostat. Can monitor Temps with Scan tool.
At least some of us actually care about taking care of the customers, doing our level best to avoid repeated comebacks. I have taken customer vehicles home overnight. I live kinda far from work and besides verifying my repairs I can get a feel for the car and listen for anything else they may be unhappy about, wind noise, dash rattles, brake pulsation, etc
Been following you for awhile. I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I have 2018 F150 3.5 with 48k. I had my passenger turbo replaced in December. Afterwards I noticed I was running hotter than usual. Just had my cam phasers finally replaced last week. Told the dealership that I had been running hot, above 230 unloaded. They said they road tested it and found no issue. My Ford pass app confirmed they only drive the truck 2 miles so I guess they really didn't care to review my concerns. After some research, I decided to install a new thermostat myself today. The problem is completely resolved. Thanks again!
That's a great tip! I've done several cam phaser jobs at my shop. I've always replaced the thermostat along with the repair and haven't experienced this problem. No I know about it and can use this information to solve overheating problems in the future. Thanks for the information.
I have also noticed since the cam phasers were replaced on my truck it has definitely run a bit hotter, fans running more often, even hitting 230 on occasions when driving up hills (not to the extent that your customer stated he had on the flats). I'm going to replace the thermostat and inspect it. My phasers were done end prior to the update in parts so it'll be interesting to see if I have the same wear marks. Thank you for caring enough to look further into the problem.
@@2WheelsdownN rubber diaphragm on the T-stat was torn. I replaced it with a 180F degree Tstat. Now under normal driving truck is at 185-195ish. Towing and hard driving it hits 205F highest temp probably 215F while towing our boat up hill to the lake. Mind you 215F was what I was running at under normal driving prior to replacing. I haven't heard my fans turn on since replacing so I'd say it was a success.
@@BlazeofFire524 that's great to hear brotha keep that ford going.im having a rattle on start ups when my truck sits over 2 or three weeks when we take the boat out .i got 178k on the dash.not sure if it's the phasers or timing chain Tensioner mind,it's 5.0 2011
Great job! You are a vanishing breed. Your honesty and strait forward explanation sets you apart from most dealers. Wish I lived close to you. God Bless.
Well jobber thermostats are only about 50 percent bad out the box, glad you figured it out sometimes we have such things show up to are shop they really get the thinking going
Glad it got all sorted out. Sounds like the original design for the thermostat was not up to long term spec and the engineers designed a better thermostat for that engine. Continue to be awesome :)
I never had a temperature issue in my truck. I only saw 225-228 degrees when towing up long grades on the highway. I had my coolant flushed and thermostat replaced by the dealer. Now the truck runs way hotter with and without the trailer. I normally see 230 on a slight incline no trailer. When towing I often lock it in 7th gear on climbs to maintain 230 degrees. I took it back to the dealer they said everything is fine and “that’s just how these trucks run” 2020 ford raptor. Wish I had a tech like you.
I had cam phasers done on my 2018 and I have this issue. They did replace the thermostat because I immediately complained. They assured me it’s normal (2 dealerships) and on the highway I run at 230-240. Right after the repair I was even hitting 250 if I ran at 55mph (low rpm in 10th gear seemed to make it even worse). I hit over 250F with ambient at -5F! I’ll be running by my dealership this week and showing them this video. Been dealing with this issue for a year.
@@2WheelsdownN I installed the new part number and i am back down to my original numbers! After warm up, I sit at 207/208 while cruising, and when I am at a stop light, I drop down to 198! I have not been on the highway yet, but just smashing the gas, I can get up to the mid 220s, but it immediately drops down to 208 again when out of boost. So awesome to not hear my fans screaming all the time!!!!
I had this same problem after my local dealership replaced the cam phasers in my 18 raptor. I put a SPD performance thermostat in it and that solved the problem.
What you have described is exactly the issue I had on my 2018 after phaser replacement. My truck would not get hot enough to go into power reduction mode , but would get close while towing. Ford told me it was normal. I knew it wasn't. The dealer and Ford refused to do anything about it, so I took it to a Lincoln dealer (other Ford dealers refused to repair it even if I paid) and the Lincoln dealer flushed and filled the system with a thermostat replacement. Everything is back to normal. Ford now refuses to reimburse me for any repair despite having video evidence of before and after.
It's incredibly frustrating. I was trying to proactively prevent a bigger issue and/or excessive wear and tear on cooling fans and other components. Unfortunately the tech working on my truck wasn't as observant as you. Your video will help a lot of owners. Thank you!
Had my phasers replaced and had several issues after. The main one being the solenoid that controls the blinds that open and close on the grill was put together incorrectly. I was driving around with no air flow coming into the engine and the coolant started to boil and foam. Temps were not out of spec either.
Just had one in the shop 2 weeks ago with cooling fan running on high after tech did phasers. Replaced thermostat and re bleed cooling system. Fixed. This will be the 5-6 one that we’ve had to replace thermostat in directly after replacing phasers
My 2018 ecoboost over heats if I tow my large trailer only at a certain speed and after driving 30 to 45 miles slow down alittle its fine. Think its the intercooler not getting enough air because of the shutter vents. I'll check my thermastat and go ahead and replace it with the newer style to be safe. Thanks 👍
Thank you for all you do i have a 2018 3.5 eco with around 49,000 on it. I just got my truck back from doing the phasers and saw this happen once and it was at 226 only popped up for a second. I was pulling a really small trailer but don't think I was going over 60. On my trip back nothing and I was going over speeds of 65 some of the way. I don't drive my truck much but I'm taking it to Ohio in August which is an 900 mile trip for me one way should I replace my thermostat or could it just have been an air pocket. My reservoir was on the low mark when i got it back i did fill it to the correct level. Should I take it for a run on the highway and do some tests thank you so much for your help.
@@FordBossMe it did come back when I was pulling a 5x8 trailer 3 times it goes to 236 then goes down quickly is there a tsb on this I want to call ford tomorrow and was this caused by getting the phasers done.
Good fix ,thanks for the information, My 3.5 is so quiet as well you almost forgot it’s running, I had a 2017 f150 3.5 w tow package and it ran cooler towing than my new truck does , the only difference is my 2020 is a maxtow 3.5 . Both trucks 10 speed,3.55 4x4s, if anything it should run cooler towing but it doesn’t. It never got over 220 but I was only pulling 3500lbs and in 50 degree weather … my old truck could tow my loaded enclosed trailer in august at 90 degrees, with the ac blasting and never go over 212. I wonder if that updated thermostat would help my 2020. I only have 10k mikes on my 2020…thanks for the part numbers.
think I'm going to try and put and updated thermostat in, but ill run my scenario by you and see what you think...used to turn wrenches years ago. Made a career change and moved on from that life. Still can do the work but I tend to have an old colleague, ( ASE MT) handle most of my issues now... Had the 17 f150 3.5 down to him for rear pinion seal replacement and to search for coolant leak. He replaced thermostat and seal with the one I supplied him with (not OEM). Prior to him getting the truck I did have a low coolant situation, but couldn't find an obvious leak and had temps climbing into the 230's+. As I said, he replaced the parts I supplied him with and I'm still getting temp spikes at highway speeds, in 10th gear mainly AFTER I let off the accelerator. IE cruise control up the highway at 75mph, 10th gear, and cancel the cruise control as I'm approaching my exit. Temp numbers will appear over temp gauge, 226-230+. Cam Phasers have NOT been done, but need to be. 100K miles on truck, all stock. Thoughts? Thanks for everything you do for us on here. Your videos have helped many of us out, more then once! God bless
I had my cam phasers replaced on my 2018 F150, and the next day left from nashville for California pulling a trailer, I had to keep the speed way down to keep from over heating the whole way out. It sounds like this is exactly the problem. But now I’m in California, and have to haul the trailer back. I’m thinking I might replace the thermostat myself, do I can make the drive home.
I think this is what was happening to my 2018 Expedition. Same issue of temp got up just a little. Dealer couldn’t find an issue. 3 days later while on vacation temperature suddenly goes through the roof and overheat warning went off. Pop the hood and coolant is all over the engine. The inlet and outlet hose were blown along with thermometer. Wish I had seen this earlier. It may have prevented a major headache, tow, and larger repair cost. Needless to say, I’m done with my dealer as I’ve seen several posts about it, and apparently Ford is aware of this issue.
Just started the rattle on my 2018 F150 ecoboost. Had my thermostat replaced 3 months ago as I would show coolent temp on any incline when towing my travel trailer. No issue with Just hit 80k, so Ford will only cover 33% of the phaser fix😢 We're on a 6 month road trip with the trailer and am a week away from an extended stay in Cali. The brake/accelerator hack works to prevent the rattle until I can get the phasers replaced.
Gotta love "updated part numbers" which you don't know about.... Was there a TSB for this? It doesn't sound like a comeback, you did good man! Love the videos as always!
Hey man, I have a 2018 F150 5.0. I've got what I believe is a VCT phasers rattle at partial throttle when deceleration when the engine is cold. I have had the TSB 18-2354 done, but it still does it. Any thoughts on this? or just drive it till the wheels fall off. Thumbs up! Thanks for your service and your videos!
Just had my dealer take a look at this for me. Fans run excessively and will get up to 225-230 going up any slight incline around 40-50mph. They said they could not replicate it. They said they saw it get to 222 but said that is fine since no check engine lights or trouble codes were present...Guess I will be changing it myself.
My truck is at the dealership right now for a similar issue. The Ford service reps are telling me that standard engine temp is 230-235 for my 2018 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. I went in for a cold engine start problem and now i'm dealing with temps between 230-255 and fans at full speed. The temps get to 235 with just 15 minutes of normal driving.
@@FordBossMe thanks for responding and great video. The Ford mechanic has changed the thermostat 2 times now and I'm still experiencing the same issue. I'm going to check on the part number they are using.
This could explain why I’m running 15-20 degrees cooler after replacing my thermostat this week on my 2018 3.5. Engine and transmission both 15-20 degrees cooler
I have this exact issue. Even at 3 degrees outside, I was at 220+ and having the fans kick on. Not that it's warming up outside I hit 240 if I accelerate for longer than like 10 seconds.
If you want to know your exact temperatures that your F-150 is before it gets into a warning Zone you can put your truck into engineering mode if you watch my video in the library on how to put your F-150 or how to put your Ford and Engineering mode you can actually monitor the trans temp from 0 up
Thanks for sharing there is a new version of the thermstat. What is not clear, why does it only happen after the phaser job, when the thermostat was fine previously?
Any chance you're located near Modesto, CA? If so which Ford dealer are you at cause I want to bring my truck to you from now on. You're absolutely awesome!
I’m guessing you’re already using a cooling sys vacuum to fill the system. If not you should. It may or may not have solved this problem but it’s a great tool to remove all air pockets from the cooling system.
So I mentioned in the video where I was using and I did mention that I'm using the vacuum cooling system filler and that will not save this issue from happening I've already explained this and there's many people in the comment section here that it was explained it has happened to them as well it is a common thing when doing this
Saint Ford Boss, not sure the Church has a Saint for mechanical problems, if they don’t this is our boy!!! I understand maybe 30% and love these stories!
We have a used 2017 F150 that we have this condition on. I've been battling it for a while. Started as consuming coolant and overheat, it was leaking water pump. Shop assured me they used Motorcraft parts upon my request and filled under vacuum, including parts you listed. I still have an overheat like that, I bought a new thermostat and will put it in (from what I've read they tend to fail out of the box sometimes). If that's not it, what else could it be? I don't think the cam phasers were done on our particular one. It's a Platinum, so should be gen 2 of that 3.5 Ecoboost.
Hi Ford Boss Me, I see you hearted my comment, but I was wondering if you would be able to respond? I tried to look on your channel but there's no contact info. I'm getting spikes of temps and now back to slowly losing coolant (about 1.5-2" on the overflow tank, both pictures taken when engine was cold). I love this truck, but am getting incredibly desperate, not sure if I can throw $6-8k for a head gasket at this.
I'm having The same problem with my Ford Expedition 2018.I Never have had this happen before when I travel a long distance with this car. I have Had it for 8 months. Recently I Drove about an hour and 20 minutes away. Started to give temperature notice 225 to 237 but goes away very quickly. I also notice my transmission temperature was at 217 I Hope it's just the thermostat issue. Thanks you.
My 16, F-150 has been at NTB for over a week now. I took it in for….AC stop blowing cold air, high temp & message on dash was “power reducing”. They said i would need to replace the water pump, thermostat, O-rings, gaskets and belt. I agreed since I’m at 150k so I wanted to be preventative and just do it. Now 9 days later they still don’t have this fixed. Would it be in bad taste to recommend they check the part number on the new thermostat? I don’t want anyone telling me how to do my job especially when they are not an I.T. person but I really need my truck fixed and back on the road to get to and from work. They have said it was probably air bubble, potentially a cracked block, sensors and different pressure tests.
I just completed the cam phasers and timing chain/ all timing components after my water pump went out. Figured it was one cover away and I’ve had the start up rattle a while. After completion the Truck runs great but it’s overheating at highway speeds and idle after a long run. Thought it was an air pocket and had it vacuum filled today. Drove 30 miles and degas bottle dropped an inch. I installed a brand new water pump and thermostat and housing. Housing had corrosion on parts where the hoses slide over so I ordered a new one that was smooth and wouldn’t leak. The housing came with a thermostat I never even took it apart to look at it. Possible the thermostat is faulty? All parts were ordered from ford. Temps getting to 240 at times in this heat. Also I think the active air damn may be damaged investigating that tomarrow. Gonna prop it open. Thanks for any help.
Do you recommend changing to the new thermostat even if your not really having a problem? I've only had my 2018 F150 3.5 get hot one time and that was when I was pulling my travel trailer up hill. It did surprise me though because I had went up other hills on that trip with no problems.
This solved exactly the same problem I had. But, now another problem, I think is related. driving at 65 mph towing a trailer that is 1/2 the capacity of the truck (so not overloaded at all). Before the thermostat fix, truck would overheat at any speed above 55 mph. Now it is running fine, not overheating. Then suddenly after towing for about 1 1/2 hour, the engine suddenly reduces power, truck slows to about 40 on its own, the dashboard flashes red that there is severe overheating, the temp gauge shows really high (this was all sudden), and check engine light starts flashing. I immediately stop. It was raining at the time. Let it sit about 10 minutes while I search for the nearest Ford dealer. Start it and it is fine, no overheating. Four days later on my return trip, the check engine light comes on, but not flashing. I get home, read the codes. Code is P0012 A Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1). And a code for overheating. The P0012 code for bank 1 was what I was getting when it was doing the CVT rattling, but always just on bank 1. So, was the engine retarding to protect itself from overheating so it kicked the code out? And if so, why only bank 1? If it retards, to self-protect, does it retard both banks? And why the overheating? My dealer is stumped. They said there is a new possible isse with debris in the solenoid, which they have not yet serviced. Ideas? Thanks.
Good info as usual. Let me ask an expert here. TPMS need help about flashing them and all that, all new to me lol. So if ya got snows and summer tires on their own rims and TMPS in them do they have to get flashed each change over? Please help very confused. Live in middle of now where so I change over tires myself, cant be running to shops for flashes they say. Please shed some light, I cant be the only one. Tks
I believe so, since the ECM can only learn 1 sensor ID for each wheel at the same time, it's pretty easy to do if u have the right tool, i used the Autel that is around $200, but if u know a shop and are a good customer they might not even charge u to do it since it takes like 5 minutes
@@denisgonzalezblandon1538 turn key to on, press hazard button 6 times. It’ll say “learn front left tire” on dash or similar. Can’t remember exact wording.
You are very welcome
Thank you for updating me
That's a great tip! I've done several cam phaser jobs at my shop. I've always replaced the thermostat along with the repair and haven't experienced this problem. No I know about it and can use this information to solve overheating problems in the future. Thanks for the information.
Yvw
I have also noticed since the cam phasers were replaced on my truck it has definitely run a bit hotter, fans running more often, even hitting 230 on occasions when driving up hills (not to the extent that your customer stated he had on the flats). I'm going to replace the thermostat and inspect it. My phasers were done end prior to the update in parts so it'll be interesting to see if I have the same wear marks. Thank you for caring enough to look further into the problem.
Update?
Such clusters. We never had to burp older cooling systems...they always cleared the bubbles perfectly.
It just happened to me following the cam phaser recall work on my 2018 F-150. Thanks for the video!
I’ve got the exact same problem in my 2018 3.5. Post can phaser job, overheating all the time. Thanks for sharing man. Really appreciate it!!!
Thank you for sharing! In my opinion you’re the best thing that’s happened to Ford in the past 5 years, keep up the great work! Be blessed!
I hope you get a gift card from Ford for Christmas this year you're for all the work you do to benefit the raptor owners
Awesome troubleshooting call 👍
Great job! You are a vanishing breed. Your honesty and strait forward explanation sets you apart from most dealers. Wish I lived close to you. God Bless.

Interesting, I like your take on this problem. You are on the case !
Job well done. Good catch man
Thank for the update I have notes some I do look different lol now I know thanks one again love the videos bro

Thanks ,by the way ,good job with customer support 👏 👍. Man that stand by his work 👏.
No cam phaser issues (knock on wood) so not related to that
I had cam phasers done on my 2018 and I have this issue.
Any update ?
@@2WheelsdownN I installed the new part number and i am back down to my original numbers! After warm up, I sit at 207/208 while cruising, and when I am at a stop light, I drop down to 198! I have not been on the highway yet, but just smashing the gas, I can get up to the mid 220s, but it immediately drops down to 208 again when out of boost. So awesome to not hear my fans screaming all the time!!!!
I had this same problem after my local dealership replaced the cam phasers in my 18 raptor. I put a SPD performance thermostat in it and that solved the problem.
Thanks for paying the knowledge forward
What you have described is exactly the issue I had on my 2018 after phaser replacement. My truck would not get hot enough to go into power reduction mode , but would get close while towing. Ford told me it was normal. I knew it wasn't. The dealer and Ford refused to do anything about it, so I took it to a Lincoln dealer (other Ford dealers refused to repair it even if I paid) and the Lincoln dealer flushed and filled the system with a thermostat replacement. Everything is back to normal. Ford now refuses to reimburse me for any repair despite having video evidence of before and after.
That's really sad
It's incredibly frustrating. I was trying to proactively prevent a bigger issue and/or excessive wear and tear on cooling fans and other components. Unfortunately the tech working on my truck wasn't as observant as you. Your video will help a lot of owners. Thank you!
Very good info. Thank you for your time and the passing of the knowledge. Take care brother.
Had my phasers replaced and had several issues after. The main one being the solenoid that controls the blinds that open and close on the grill was put together incorrectly. I was driving around with no air flow coming into the engine and the coolant started to boil and foam. Temps were not out of spec either.
There was no reason to even have those off
I really appreciate this! Thank you!
Just had one in the shop 2 weeks ago with cooling fan running on high after tech did phasers. Replaced thermostat and re bleed cooling system. Fixed. This will be the 5-6 one that we’ve had to replace thermostat in directly after replacing phasers
Another great video with an interesting issue. Thanks.
Thanks 👍
Hey Pat, did you have any resolution to your overheating while towing with the new thermostat?
EXCELLENT! As always Be Blessed!
I stopped watching ford UA-cam videos and my suspected cam phaser issue went away until I came back and watched another. 😉
Lol
Outstanding job nailing it down
Thank you for all you do i have a 2018 3.5 eco with around 49,000 on it.
Drive it around and see if it comes back
@@FordBossMe it did come back when I was pulling a 5x8 trailer 3 times it goes to 236 then goes down quickly is there a tsb on this I want to call ford tomorrow and was this caused by getting the phasers done.
Your awesome thank you for your time and expert knowledge!!!
My 01 F150 is trucking right along 😂 think I’ll keep it old school
Karl Benz would be floored if he saw where cooling systems are today!
Same symptoms. Changed out thermostat with new part number. Problem solved!!! The truck has never run this good.
think I'm going to try and put and updated thermostat in, but ill run my scenario by you and see what you think...used to turn wrenches years ago. God bless
It would be a good start and make sure ALL the air is bled out, use a vacuum fill coolant refill tool
Oops, no issue with coolant temp now.
Makes one wonder how many engines already destroyed especially with company fleet ones where drivers don't care. Crazy poor designed / made parts.
Thanks for the info. Big help !!!!
Well done diagnosis. Good info. Thx
Gotta love "updated part numbers" which you don't know about.... Was there a TSB for this? It doesn't sound like a comeback, you did good man! Love the videos as always!
Side note: Test driving that on your own dime, legend! Not alot of technicians like yourself
No tsb for the thermostat
Yeah change it
@@FordBossMe any recommendations on tools to properly refill and purge the coolant system of air?
My truck is at the dealership right now for a similar issue. The Ford service reps are telling me that standard engine temp is 230-235 for my 2018 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. I went in for a cold engine start problem and now i'm dealing with temps between 230-255 and fans at full speed. The temps get to 235 with just 15 minutes of normal driving.
Replace the thermostat it's not that hard
@@FordBossMe thanks for responding and great video. The Ford mechanic has changed the thermostat 2 times now and I'm still experiencing the same issue. I'm going to check on the part number they are using.
Thank you for the information God bless you too
This could explain why I’m running 15-20 degrees cooler after replacing my thermostat this week on my 2018 3.5. Engine and transmission both 15-20 degrees cooler
Yep
I have this exact issue. Even at 3 degrees outside, I was at 220+ and having the fans kick on. Not that it's warming up outside I hit 240 if I accelerate for longer than like 10 seconds.
If you want to know your exact temperatures that your F-150 is before it gets into a warning Zone you can put your truck into engineering mode if you watch my video in the library on how to put your F-150 or how to put your Ford and Engineering mode you can actually monitor the trans temp from 0 up
This man is badass 👍🏽
Tyvm brother
Thanks for sharing there is a new version of the thermstat. What is not clear, why does it only happen after the phaser job, when the thermostat was fine previously?
I think it's because you pull it out of the cooling system dried-out
Great video and information as always!
So I mentioned in the video where I was using and I did mention that I'm using the vacuum cooling system filler and that will not save this issue from happening I've already explained this and there's many people in the comment section here that it was explained it has happened to them as well it is a common thing when doing this
Thanks for the update
Excellent work
Saint Ford Boss, not sure the Church has a Saint for mechanical problems, if they don’t this is our boy!!! I understand maybe 30% and love these stories!
Tanks for the information
Any time!
Thanks you.
Again, nice work.
Thanks for sharing.
Heyyy what's up man, longtime no see.
Don’t try and burp this truck traditionally. You need to use a coolant re filler that pulls vacuum on a system helps with how a thermostat operates
Hey What else would you recommend changing with cam phasers? My truck has 70k miles on it.
i also heard that you never want to use any aftermarket thermostats in any of these engines, 2.7, 3.5 or 5.0.
Will continu to watch the Ford video this is interesting and content .
Could be faulty thermostat, yeah 240 is way to high
Should be max 215ish
Exactly my issue after phaser job.
Great video
Do you recommend changing to the new thermostat even if your not really having a problem? I've only had my 2018 F150 3.5 get hot one time and that was when I was pulling my travel trailer up hill. It did surprise me though because I had went up other hills on that trip with no problems.
No
This solved exactly the same problem I had.
Ideas? Thanks.
I've heard of the same issue and nobody knows why it's doing it
This is why I bought the 3.3 that's all I need.
I'll video this
No scanner needed
Remind me tomorrow at work
@@denisgonzalezblandon1538 turn key to on, press hazard button 6 times. It’ll say “learn front left tire” on dash or similar. Can’t remember exact wording. Take a flat head screw driver and let air out of that tire until you hear a beep from horn. Then you’ll move onto the front right tire and so on. When it learns each tire it’ll beep. After all 4 it’s learned.
Good job...most mechanics wouldn't give a crap
