      Been a ford man all my life and come from a long line of ford lovers.They have abandoned theyre values to longevity.They build nothing but trash now.If it was a pushrod engine it would live but it wears panties like it needs to sissy weak trash.Have a 2019 Expedition Platinum Max $80,000.00 vehicle top of the line ,58000 miles out of warranty ford wont touch it.First start it sounds like a bag of rocks rolling across a garbage can lid then throws a p0022 code.If this trash cant make it 60000 miles without a failure i dont need it. ive changed oil every 3500 miles since new.Ive turned wrenches for 40 years of my life and have never seen ill built trash like this unless it was a Caterpillar.Going to trade it tomorrow for a suburban and 16 fleet trucks will be dodge 5500 as soon as they can get them.Sad but the engineers at ford have 1 thumb in theyre ass and 1 thumb in theyre mouth and are waiting for somebody to say switch.

      @@philiplaflam7972 when was the last time a worker actually made any kind of a big decision in a company? Management, CEO, and investors' board made these decisions. That comes down to capitalists and their henchmen and these decisions were made with profit in mind. Profit fucks us all over and is both but theft. I'm a Sr master tech as well and I own a 15 f150 with the 3.5 and let me tell you I love everything about it. And I change my oil every 3k not just on that but all of our vehicles. But when I bought this truck I updated all the timing components, spark plugs etc. Even down to the turbos and coolant lines etc. I didn't know the history on it so that's why I done it. And when I tore it down it was actually really clean and taken care of but just for my piece of mind I done all that.

    I did all my oil changes on time and it still happened to mine , I got ford to fix it 12,000km after the warranty was over it started at 60,000km and I fought with them till I had 132,000km and they finally fixed it with no engine light on because they cleared the code a while back and it wouldn't come back on ,that was their excuse saying no engine light no fix under warranty until I ran out of warranty. It got to the point of me threatening to burn down their dealership and told them to call the cops because I was about K.O everyone in their shop, luckily they had just hired a new shop manager and he pulled up my trucks history of problems then took it for a ride , came back said it would be fixed under warranty , thanks to this awesome manager and his brother who also got hired at the time , he's their head mechanic now . Without those 2 guys I would be in prison and there would be no ford dealership in my home town . Thanks to Pat and Eric at lecours motor sales , ford doesn't realize how much they owe these 2 guy's.

      Honestly ford wouldn't care they'd hire new employees within the week and insurance would build the building back. Dodge dealer in Washington' nc did something very similar to me with a Ruff shifting transmission in a pacifica telling my wife it's her driving or it's normal, warranties are worthless when they get to decide if it's covered or not. I'm 100% for small government but these are great examples of when a government should step in and protect the victims of these bad car manufacturers and dealerships. But unfortunately our government made it clear who they are in bed with when they unconstitionally gave them handouts.

    Great video, super helpful info to get a basic understanding on and other things to consider. I’m in Canada, VCT solenoids alone are $1,100 all in which they said a big chunk is labour. Any time I’m told that it perks my interest to videos like this thinking if they’re already going shoulders deep into the engine then what else makes sense to tackle now and save some labour cost rather than waiting 6-12 months for another bill. 250,000Km on my 5.0 and still going. Shooting for 500,000Km 🤞

    I bought a 19 F150 5.0 with 48,000 miles and within a week I had this repair done at the dealership under warranty. Everything ran great for about 2,000 miles and then the check engine light came back on. I brought it to another dealer and they said it needs the repair done again! The dealer also brought to my attention that this repair has been performed on my truck 2 other times. Now my truck has barely over 50,000 miles and its had this repair done 3 times! I think it's time to trade it in for a good-Ol pushrod motor. First ford truck I've owned and it will be the last!

    You sir give me hope for the world. If only more people took pride in their work, and did the right thing when nobody was looking, it would be a better place. My local Ford dealer didn’t even bother to remove old wheel weights from les Schwab when I bought new tires from them. They just slapped some more weight on and counterbalanced. That’s why I do all my own PM and repairs. I’d do my tires too, but don’t have a balance machine lol

      My piggy bank got fat (I had the money) but my regular mechanic said he would do it, but then when I went to pick-up my truck, he says that I didn't need to do all that work. He just changed a coil & spark plug, the engine light went out. But my engine light came back ON after a few months. Before I took it to my mechanic, the light went OFF on its own! A few months later, it came back ON after driving it about 800 miles. I mentioned this to my mechanic and told him I was going to take it to him, then the dumb engine light went OFF again. Right now it's OFF, but I have a feeling it will come back ON again eventually. I can't find a good master mechanic near Houston, Texas. I'm not taking it back to my regular mechanic (fair price kind of guy, that's why I love taking my vehicles to him). The truck runs great, even when the engine light comes ON, but lately, I noticed it loses power when the engine is nice and warmed-up. It still drives, but I can tell is not accelerating properly. I would hate for it to stall on me at a traffic light. (yikes) Anyway, that's my update. I will probably take it to another mechanic, but hopefully I can find a master mechanic to change my phasers, timing chain, tensioners, water pump, etc.

If i drove it every day it wouldn't do it. I RELIGIOUSLY changed my oil with synthetic every 5000 km's. When I think about the thousands it would have cost me to do this job, turbos and manifolds..... no brainer dump the piece of crap! Now my truck is a 1991 gmc 2500. Never been happier.

    I currently have a 2016 3.5 Ecoboost F150, which I bought 'preowned'. When I purchased it, I found all/any warranty work, service where done at the same location the truck was bought new! So, I went to that dealer, and they printed out every single time the truck was in, and what it was in for...including oil changes. It obviously always had oil changes within a reasonable time, and it was the Motorcraft synthetic blend oil used, and the only time it didn't (but had a full synthetic used) was the non-Ford dealer that sold it to me, and they put all new brakes and rotors on as well. I'm currently at 127,000 miles, and the engine runs perfect. The only main issue, was it had one exhaust manifold changed on it, and one water pump, but has been good ever since. I did add a 'catch-can' to the truck to help hold off the majority of the gunk from the PVC, other than that all is OEM. I love the truck, as it has all the options I'd want in a truck, so I would certainly have VCT Phaser's replaced if/when they may go out, and I'd have a new chain and any other parts upgraded as well, 'but' my question would be, (unsure if there is anything that would fix this, or if I should) are the heads, as being a 2016 it would have the PVC being returned and mucking up the valves)? Not sure if one should change the heads at the point if the body is off the truck in having the heads cleaned & replaced, new heads or whether to bother with it at all? I'm just thinking 'Longevity' of this truck, so looking for information on if it would be smart to think about this possible head issue, or just do the phaser work? By the way, I drive my truck for getting the best fuel mileage, so it's not driven hard at all, with minimal if any towing.

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 роки тому

      Honestly it’s just not necessary to do all that work. I would replace the phasers if/when they tear up but other than that I wouldn’t do anything. I’ve seen plenty 300k mile 3.5’s that never had anything done but regular maintenance.

    I have a 2017 F150 Platinum 3.5 ecoboost with 48k miles on it. I recently heard a slight knock in the engine. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosised the the issue you have described in you video (cam solenoid).
    The remedy you described to prevent the issue, changing oil every 4-5k miles didn't work for me. The dealer changed the oil with the synthetic blend a couple of times at 3-5k miles. Then I had them to use their Motocraft full synthetic a couple of times. Then more recently I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. Each oil change was no more than 5k miles, yet I developed the cam solenoid issue. My truck never had a check engine light or any malfunction light, I just noticed a slight knock when I was under the hood changing out the battery. Had I not been outside of the vehicle with the hood open and motor running, I may not have heard the knocking, but I cought it early.
    My question is since I changed my oil with synthetic oil at no more than 5k miles what can I do to prevent the cam solenoid issue from reoccurring?

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 роки тому

      The main thing that changing your oil regularly will prevent is engine sludge. Was it setting any dtcs? Also is this a 3.5 or a 5.0? Most of the time the 5.0s don’t make any noise they just set a dtc. The 3.5 is the one that’s bad about rattling.

Still have a payment and no warranty so yes we need our family car. Pick truck up after 2 days of them working on it, cel came in leaving parking lot, rough idle,stalls at stop lights, stalls backing into my driveway. Take it back. Needs oil changed in told. Ok. Drive easy, keep under 3000rpm im told for first 100 miles. Ok.150 miles later cel back on. Take it back, it's my fault because i used aftermarket coils. Want $500 more for new motorcraft coils.No. i can get then cheaper myself. Nothing changed, cel still came in, rough idle,bad gas mileage. Take it back,oh you need some head work, cylinder 5 spark plug was not threaded in right. At this point i lost my patience with them and wanted a second opinion. Went to another mechanic recommended by a neighbor. Compression test, another set of spark plugs,oil change,and 2 vvt sensors.$1400.ran great for about a week. Just sad that VCT technology has been out so long that this is still a common issue for the 3.5 ford's. I agree tho change the oil every 5k no matter what the engine is. Great video! I appreciate the details you add to your explanation.
    One thing worth noting is that Ford's related bulletin (SSM 48423) calls for mechanics to only replace the VCT solenoid, and that's only after forcing the solenoid to cycle 10 or so times manually to try and "clear the blockage". In my opinion if you're having issues with solenoid sticking you're not going to fix it on any long term basis by repeatedly cycling the plunger. You might get it to go but soon enough you'll be back at it.
    The bulletin doesn't mention the phasers at all. I'm looking at a 2019 F-150 where the dealer is replacing the solenoid after getting a P0022 error code.
    Should I be asking them replace the phaser at the same time before I buy??

      Very informative. The only thing that i would disagree with is the oil changing. I have religiously changed my oil between 4-5k miles and still have got the issue and everytime was at a Ford service center with oem parts and oil and it started with me at 95000 miles

    I'm sorry but you are wrong. I drive over 50,000 miles a year and so I need my truck badly for a service. I usually change my oil about every 4,000 mi . At 75,000 The campaigns are started knocking. Got it fixed and now at 89,000 they're knocking again. Plus, every oil change was done by a Ford dealer
    However, I do like your channel and you are very informative. And I hope you guys do find out what the problem is because I really do love this Ford truck. For a full-size truck. I have never got such great gas mileage

    The built in oil change interval in the computer is set for 10 thousand mile oil change. It's like they planned it out carefully to make sure the customer is forced into a new truck or regular high cost service appointments. I run full synthetic 5w30 and set the oil life monitor to 50% which equals 5 thousand miles. Nothing but Motorcraft oil filters too.

    2016 5.0 F-150 here.
    I had a p0022 code pop on my truck. It would stall from the time to time at idle but no knocking.
    Replaced both VCT Solenoids on bank 2 and intake & exhaust camshaft position sensor.
    Truck is running better but now I’m getting a p0390 & p0394 code.
    Any advice?
    P.s.
    Keep up the work. Solid videos

    I was waiting for you to show step by step the procedure of changing all four solenoids vct I'm trying to get to the bottom of the noise I'm hearing in my coyote 84.000 miles on it, it's a 2013 f 150. I trust you to be a good mechanic because of your knowledge. Can you give a old back yard mechanic some help with information 🧰 who's turned wrenches for 40 years

    Just took my 2020 f150 3.5 to the Ford house to have the power train control module reprogrammed for phaser rattle. Just another recall to add to the very long list that it’s already had done to it. Only has 4000 miles on it.

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  3 роки тому

      Sad thing is it’s still probably going to need phasers put in it after the recall is done.

      @@FlyingWrenches13 My truck never rattled, never had a problem with it in over 20k miles since new. I had the recall done a month ago, had been sluggish, trans is shuttering, and looked this morning and had a new recall. Clicked the button and boom, cam phaser replacement. Sucks... they have to rip my motor that has less than 22k miles apart. :(

    What about doing the video on lash adjuster replacement and lifter replacement on a 5.0 without taking front cover off?

    Another UA-cam video suggested make sure the screen on the oil pickup tube is clean. He said poor oil flow is the root cause of the failure.

    Interesting you mention vtc phaser functions off oil pressure.
    F-150 when you first start the engine, has zero oil pressure for 2-5 seconds.
    So you can hear a rattle/pining on start. I saw another video where you can start the engine by putting gas paddle to floor, crank engine for about 3-5 second and oil pressure comes up, then let of gas.
    Might take awhile to make it a habit but perhaps this would stop damage to vtc phaser?

      That is true. You can hold accelerator pedal to WOT and that kills injectors so you can spin it to prime oil pressure. The thing is even then your still eventually going to have phaser issues. Besides that, you shouldn’t have to do all that to prevent noises. Just a bad design on ford.

    Phasers started messing up today on my 2018 V8. Sounded like a diesel, and it threw a code. Checked the oil, and it didn’t register on the dipstick. Sheesh. Changing the oil as we speak. I’ve heard of others getting noise in the phasers, and it being a sign their oil is low.

    I dont know if you ever watch South main Auto Eric O but he got a Ford F150 5.0 in with a stalling engine and he exercised the cam phaser solenoids using 12 volt leads connected to the battery and it freed the phaser up and the stalling went away.

    Great share, thanks. I hear about problems with both 5.4L Ford Triton engines AND the 3.5L Eco Boost. I am buying a used Expedition and trying to figure out if it is wiser to get a newer used Expedition with the 3.5L with direct and ported injection versus the 5.4L.

    I'm 3 yrs late to this but 5.0 just need a solenoids 95 % of the time. I've done 3 set of phasers on 5.0 the rest have been solenoids and I've been doing them for going on 10 yrs now. 3.5 2.7 3.0 st eco are the only ones with phaser issues.
