  • “TURN FOOT! TURN HIP!”
Some people mistake these movements as a consequence of each other. You end up either focusing too much on trying to twist your hip into target, or rubbing the balls of your foot raw forcing it to pivot. The more power you try to exert, the stiffer your body becomes. Nothing depletes your energy tank as quickly as a stiffened body.
As an instructor, I’ve seen all kinds of bad habits you guys do trying to deliver a powerful kick. Some people bend their back to bring the leg up. These are the kicks that don’t “turn in” to the opponent’s body, and can easily be caught. Some others turn hip before pivoting on the standing foot. These are kicks that could result in strained knee joints. You are supposed to turn your hip and pivot on your foot AT THE SAME TIME.
The most beautiful Muay Thai fighters to watch are the ones who can look completely relaxed, and yet explode suddenly into a powerful roundhouse kick. The secret to that kind of raw power is in being relaxed. Sounds ironic?
Here’s a simple practice you can do at home to help you discover this “relaxed power”.
Imagine yourselves walking. Most people don’t give much thought about how your hands and legs coordinate. They just do. As your right leg steps forward, your right hand naturally swings backward to counter balance.
It is the same theory in the roundhouse kick. You don’t just bring your leg/twist your hip into the target. This movement is not isolated. You need to engage the WHOLE body - your core muscles, your arms - to work together.
Practice walking. Take 3 slow steps - left, right, left. And just as the heel of your left (front) leg lifts off the ground, use the forward momentum to bring the right (back) leg up into a kick as you swing your right hand down naturally. The momentum and your arm swing will help your standing (left) foot to pivot easily, as your drive your kicking leg into the target.
Go slowly, no power at first. Power will come later once your movement is efficient. Be natural. Go with the flow. This is how to practice beautiful Muay Thai.
