- The opening chorus 'Herr, unser Herrscher' from St John Passion, performed by the Nederlands Bach Society for All of Bach. The St John Passion was the first Passion Bach had written as cantor in Leipzig. The Passion story as told in the Gospel of John is different from that told by the other three evangelists - Matthew, Luke and Mark. John’s version places the emphasis on Christ’s divine origin. Throughout his suffering, this divine origin still plays a role and nowhere is Jesus as human as in the other gospels.
For this performance, we selected a cast of singers under the age of 35. Apart from the leaders, all the orchestra members are also younger than 35. The concert series was preceded by a course of auditions and masterclasses.

Most people have no idea how revolutionary this was in Bach's time. Those opening strained harmonies are more like something from the Romantic era, not the Baroque.

@@margaretharypkema9290 That amazing dissonance in the opening. After Bach, you don't hear harmony like that for almost 75 years.
I know right! The amount of emotion is staggering, Bach really knew how to use his music to stir the feelings of his audience. I get chills listening to it now, I can only imagine how a group of baroque listeners would react to this.

So spot on! Nobody did tension like J.S. e.g. the last 1 minute and 10 seconds of the toccata and fuge in D minor are off the hook tense. So much so that he makes a minor chord feel like a major resolve @ the end. We so miss those diminished chords in modern music. So blessed he was a human. Miss you forever Johann. ❤️

I don't think there will ever be another Bach. He must have been from another planet where the beauty was so exquisite and the only way he knew how to express it was through music. Calling this a masterpiece is an understatement, it's a miracle of sound, harmony and emotion.
While I am not really a classical fan, I have to agree.
Part of it is to realise that the beauty of our planet is that magnificent! As above, so below. Bach seems to have had his mind OPEN!
History is long and our greatest hope is another bach someday.
Herr, herr , herr-- one of the most powerful words i have ever heard in my life. This rendition is just perfect. There is no one who guarantee that this is not bach preferred. In every aspect human emotions one can perceive, this is the one, the honoured rendition the honoured perfection that we deserve. These people are just perfect. Thank you soooo much Netherlands bach society. I don’t have words to thank you enough.

Bach wasn't ahead of his time. He was timeless. Music like this wouldn't be around again until deep Romanticism, and still, with the constant bass moving and implied percussion due to the persistent rhythm in the strings, this is as proper in the 20th Century as Jazz or heavy metal is. Bach is the Alpha and the Omega of music.
He is a gift and a measure unit. Maybe we have more complex options today, but few speak to the soul the way his work does. His pieces never miss the aim.

@@alfredvikingelegant9156 - That was probably (uncharacteristic) modesty by Newton. There were prominent scientists before Newton but he exceeded all of them. And probably all that have come after him. The same with Bach.

I think I've heard this piece over 100 times. And I am always left in awe, especially with those incredible chromatic dissonances at the very beginning. They remind me so much of thorns, sticking right into your conscience. How did this man hear these sounds all by himself, with practically no influence upon his thought processes, so early on? This was written in the year before 1724 or so, precisely 300 years ago. Bach is truly without peer in Western music for having concocted these marvelous, aching sounds from whole cloth. A true genius among geniuses.
What astonishes me is that CPE Bach said that Bach would compose from his head, then play the work on a keyboard. So he heard all of this intricate contrapuntal texture in his head first. Mindblowing. Sure, his extensive musical education was the primer for such genius, but when you get to works like The Art of the Fugue and The Musical Offering, it's still incredible.

I still have no idea how, at any time in history, let alone 300 years ago, someone was able not only to conceive these sounds in their head, but transcribe them so that they could be recreated by musicians.

Oh and the theology that goes with this music is just as deep.

How many Gospel writters would even think of writting something so profound in their music? Truly, Bach was a man who knew his Saviour well.
This must be one of the most moving and dramatic choruses in all of music...and such a wonderful performance with period instruments. The constant beat, the discords, the way it rises to a climax and then falls away and builds again is magnificent...thank you!
I know of nothing like the moment when the chorus enters with "Herr!" Have listened to this piece endlessly and it's shocking every time.
You should watch “Mirror” (1975). The director makes great use of Bach’s music, and it’s breathtaking

I wonder if Bach was moved when he heard this in his head for the first time? There is so much longing and melancholy being driven along by that throbbing beat. Dissonances playing off each other. Rising and falling. Just stunning. And beautifully performed. What a genius this man was!

@@bobmcgahey1280 people forget about this or chose to ignore it, but that denies the whole purpose of his creations. Bach served God, all his work was an offering. I believe that is why he holds the spot he does in the history of humanity, since all other great composers looked up to him. You don't get that position and hold it for centuries without being contested. And nobody does it...

This opening Chorus from “Johannes-Pasion” and alto Aria “Erbarme dich mein Gott” from “Matthäus-Pasion” are the pinnacles of Western sacred choral music - they transcend time, truly eternal masterpieces created by Bach’s genius!👌🏻👏🏻

The Calcium Kid I have seen it, of course, as Tarkovsky is one of my favourite ‘intellectual’ film directors (the other ones are Kubrick and (selectively) Mallick). Though I didn’t like ‘The Sacrifice’ - my favourite of Tarkovsky films is «Зеркало»/‘The Mirror’.

Verherrlicht is better translated as "Glorified"
.
Here is the ultimate contrast with the Niedrigkeit (humiliation) which immediately precedes Verherrlicht. And to emphasise this Bach places "forte" between the two.
This is the stupendous contradiction of Christ's passion. It was the deepest imaginable humiliation, yet at the same time he was glorified above all, as very God of very God (John 13:31-32).

I went to a concert with my friend. I had never heard this music before. I was enthralled by the opening, before the chorus comes in and then, POW!, or should I say "HERR"! I felt my very spirit heading up to heaven. My whole body was trembling! What music! And here, I love seeing the singers faces. They all express the deepest feelings............great performance!

What an ominous hair raising opening chorus! So full of dread and foreboding. 300th Anniversary of this Great Work!
The thing that amazes me most is, how do they get such a full sound from such a relatively small ensemble? Its amazing!!!!
I imagine supreme amounts of skill and good acoustics.
It's easy to answer: the tuning in those times was lower, and the strings made in gut, so the instruments were less brilliant but more resonant, even those doscret "continuo" tiorbas and other plucked instruments have a lot of bass open strings who resonate plenty. Also, as the music is tonal, the triad is always doubled in several instruments, adding strength to the whole, which does not happen, for example, in Webern, where there are no doubling. Also, the music was conceived for small, resonant spaces, like churches, and is in a church that this performance, as it should, is taking place.
Venue size and acoustics. Live string instruments are actually very loud, even a quartet will sound rich in a smaller setting.
I must admit that the most laudable feature in this rendition is clarity of meanings. For instance, if you listen to other renditions of this introduction, you wouldn't perceive the realization of the third HERR as more contemplative in contrast with the other first realizations which are euphoric and dramatic, which undoubtedly changes the semantics of this passage. Again, bravo!
Yes, I noted that. The three "Herr" are articulated in a very subtle way.
I've been listening to cclassical music fot the last 54 years. I think this opening chorus and the final chorale in St John's Passion are among the best pieces I have ever heard.
With my mother's funeral service in 1969, the church organist played the melody of that final chorale (which my father had selected) very softly, as if in mourning, My father considered that rendering INAPPROPRIATE. I agreed, and still agree (having become a widower six weeks ago) as it ought to be played loud.

I gotta admit, this type of music gives me mixed emotions. Some happy some sad and some chaotic type emotions. This music is pure art in audio.
A miracle of music! At a time when music was blue, red and yellow Bach introduced for the first time a whole pallet of colors and textures. Sadly his employer didn’t understand Bach. The Passion was reworked a few times and the definitive version had to be canceled when the city council decided not to perform it a third time leave Bach with partial scores of this final version.

Beethoven I love. Mozart I love. Bach is absolutely divine. Mozart achieves sometimes the same tension and build but not as often as Bach does.

I have listened to this several times over. It's a masterpiece. I have goosebumps-- and this is just the beginning! Van Veldhoven has balanced all the parts well here, and this choir is great!
Sometimes I literally can't watch this because the goosebumps are just constant...

Je suis fana de la musique médiévale, surtout celle de Guillaume de Machaut. Mais je retourne toujours aux oeuvres de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Il représente le sommet de la musique occidentale, même la civilisation occidentale. C'était l'avis de Franz Liszt en ce qui concerne la grande messe de Bach, la messe en si mineur.

@@margaretharypkema9290 Even if most of Bachs output was written with god in mind, chalking this amazing feat of art up to divinity instead of the ingenuity of humanity is a disservice to humanity. God may have provided the inspiration, but Bach still executed it. Bach's immaculate musicality and revolutionary mind enabled him to accomplish this, not god.

Notice the always present pulsating base tempo (the fire amber) from start to the end... and the voices are the flames and sometimes one spikes higher than the rest of the flames(the soprano)

I grew up on the Karl Richter performance, but this is quite good, the creepy dissonance capturing the flavor of Christian mysticism.
