I turn 60 in a few months and have recently returned to Aikido for fitness. Never too old to prep. Better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.
I’m 60 and retired, 2nd Dan instructor in Cape Town but I never left Aikido. I have an overland vehical, fully packed and ready to go at 5 min notice. 1 x 5 week trip a year into the African bush (often wild camping in game parks) and at least a weekend a month to keep the skills up.
I'm 62-year-old female. I'm the prepper in my family. I'm also the healthiest in the family. Love my vitamixes I walk on my treadmill. I walk at the park. I'm very physically active and I don't feel 62 at all. I'm much rather be prepared for anything then not be prepared. The worst that'll happen is I have a lot of food . Lot of long shelf life food We can eat one day.
I don't use gym . Set of kettle bells, heaviest is 7kg and my own body weight. Use money I save on gym to buy what preps I need. Walk a lot and use stairs whenever. The thing is the 'doing' as regards exercising. If you can't do 10 or 20 press-ups, then break it down into smaller chunks throughout the day ie 2 press-ups then another 2 later on. When It was a Christmas/New Year several years ago I set myself the challenge of being able to do 100 squats and 100 press-ups without a break before I reached my next birthday, I was 64 at the time and managed to achieve the goal in under 5 months. Heard of a guy in his eighties who did 300 press-ups every day. He worked as Cowboy on a ranch some where in the USA.
Never too old to prep. I'm 56 and suffer on and off with a VERY bad back. I still work at the moment and prep as best I can. Long term goals are all health dependent.... but who knows what the future holds.
I am 59 and walk, cycle, nordic walking and use the outdoor gym. I am car free this makes me exercise a lot more. I don't want a car when I am old but will prefer to use a bus pass. I do go to the Park run but I do nordic walking, my knees aren't that great
Roughly same age as you , best thing about resistance training is it is good for the mind , staves off stress , you will try eat better and get feel good chemicals - all those plus i feel less achey generally , i aim to train most muscles about twice per week/ish , i keep sessions under 45 mins . i also use pre workouts and need my own music or wont happen .
I’m 55 I also have a gym membership. I used to pretty much only use the treadmill and stair master. To keep in shape for my hill walks. But now I have started to use the weight machines as I have a bad back and it takes me some time in the morning to sort myself out. I have Really noticed a difference in my back since using the other equipment. Resistance training is definitely a benefit to me. Obviously we are all different and need to train at our individual level and not over do it. Strains and injuries just slow down our development and tax motivation.
I agree and I always find back pain and related issues go away when I resistance train. I imagine that without building muscle, the atrophy that starts around 40+ would really take its toll by 70. Thanks for the comment 👍
You are blessed to have a partner in life I am a solo female wild camper whenever I can get out not because it’s fun it’s actually hard work for me it’s to teach myself how to live with nothing in the Australian bush after a trip I come back and ponder on my success and failures to do better next time and adjust gear try and test gear and again I still working plan is to do hiking trips like a nomadic I don’t have any family one day I have to have thoughts on my last years of life maybe I end up in some remote rural town where they might wrap me in linen and bury my bones I see a lot of older women these days living out of their vehicles the way the world is going they will take away peoples vehicles for one reason like you can’t register that vehicle without a fixed address so what happens to those who have no fixed address and live out of a vehicle???
You are making decisions as a young man. We no longer have that luxury. Build on what you have now and dont lose it with procrastination. That's lethal at our age.
Hi Steve. I turn 65 in 2 weeks, but never worry about health and fitness these days. My garden gives me my daily work out. I grow all our fruit, nuts and vegetables so it's a constant fitness regime. My advice to anyone who's getting on a bit is - if you need elective surgery for anything (for me it was 2 x hip replacements), get it done now while you're still working and have access to funds. I was almost crippled but am now back to climbing ladders, digging the garden, chopping firewood etc. Have not felt this good for years! Same goes for any dental work - get it done now before the SHTF.
Hello from Australia. I am 68 female with osteoarthritis. I work out every day for an hour and walk the dogs for an hour twice a day. I am my brothers full-time carer. I'm in better physical shape than most of the 20 and 30 years old people around here. I've been prepping since I was 16, and didn't even know it 😅 Thank you.
I do agree the older generation these days are encouraged to just sit in the chair watch tv and take meds. Going back a few year but some of our parents/grandparents were natural preppers. Fresh in their memories was the war and rationing. My grandfather decades after ww2 and until he died well into his 80's, a miner most of his life but still found the time and energy to run a large allotment filled with produce. When he retired he took on a second allotment he filled with produce. Most weeks during growing season each of his four daughters would be given a box of mixed veg to feed their(our) families. Huge veg as well better than the shops or markets. Needless to say their pantry was always chock full of tins too along with more tins in the spare room. Even into his 80's he was down that allotment digging. No need for gyms then. Certainly most folks have lost those survival skills in recent decades.
I'm 44 and have just recently partially slipped a disc in my lower back, (there's a term for it, which i can't remember) I have disc degeneration in my neck and lower back anyway. I'm usually fine on my day to day need, but I feel like everytime i try to get back to fitness, ( i used to be very much into kickboxing) i injure myself. I thought, I'll join a gym then did this, albeit not at the gym, i was just walking to pick my car up after its MOT. I do a mixture of work, could be either up and down like a brides nightie, or sat for longer periods than I'd like. I prefer to be on my feet, it stops me from seizing up. So yeah long story short, i joined the gym, and only been 4 times in the past month. I'd really like to go back to kickboxing, as it's a good all-rounder, but it feels like the universe is against me.. so I'm going to look into doing some yoga, and take it from there. Although the thought of it is off-putting, not really my thing, but I guess you need to build strong foundations in order to stop the house from falling down.
Older people can stock up on food over the year, so when it is snowy etc, they will have food. I find it off that people think old people are starving when there is a short term disaster, old people are more wise and organised.
Love your humor! As a 66 year old I see the picture staying working here but I hope you have a license for those chickens!! I might have to drop a line to keir!! Any way good video all the best English bloke living in Arizona USA.
65 year old man here in the USA. Home owner with a 17 year old kid here at home. Single father. I have a home gym, basically. Instead of using my cable machine and dumbells so much, I've added kettle bells. Continue to use the heavy punching bag, slam balls and stationary bike. Knees are shot. Earned my Black Belt at 41, after 8 years of training/competition and instruction. Still teach some. Can't build muscle in the gym alone. Much of it happens at the supper table. I do 200 grams or protein a day, 10 grams of creatine, a bunch of other supplements including collagen. I do intermittent fasting several days a week. (16/8). Work out fasted during those days.
I'm 50 and think the last 20 years went quick and also think the same about how quickly I'll be 70. I still felt young into my early mid 40s. But at 50 I'm now thinking old age is fast approaching and you're right, you really have to take care of yourself as you get older, otherwise your body will really let you know..
Im 66 steve , ive got the age related pain but still go tabbing with a ruck on my back , one thing made a massive difference a carnivore diet a lot of my aches just went , but everybody's different that worked for me
As a recent retiree, I've spent the last year getting in shape, including a couple of orthopedic repairs. I was always in fairly decent shape, but getting back to the condition I want was a struggle. Weights three times per week, bike or walk everyday, an hour of stretching. Every year past 50, the time it takes to get in shape significantly notches up. So there is really good reason to maintain yourself throughout life.
I believe that the majority of preppers neglect physical fitness in favour of cool kit and food stocks. People say its never to late but i believe thats wrong. I see it in my older family. Some are now unable to walk just a few yards due to a stagnant life and poor diet choices. They can get fitter, but they will now never be fit. If it all goes wrong over night and your out of shape then I'm afraid it is too late.
Some people I work with in their late 70s have the money to retire, but I think they just want to mainly stay active and occupied. They are still very healthy and fit.
Find something you enjoy. Get variety of activity into your life. Train longer but easier on cardio (55-65% HRR) to start until you feel confident your body can handle a higher intensity. Sets of 15-30 with a lighter weight to near failure can give ~ equal results and your body a chance to remember heavier resistance training. Start by cutting out snacks, then do some Intermittent Fasting, then a 24hr and so on. Listen to when your body tells you to stop fasting, you'll just "know"... ex PT over 2 decades. All the best.
6 months to a year and you can start power lifting. UA-cam channels with them well into 70s lifting over 150kg the men. No jokes. There is hope if you want to earn it.
Keep fit , light weights , and cardio , dont overdo it. As we age we have to adapt training to whatever our ailments dictate. As my old boxer uncle once said to me ' dont train so hard that you cant do your everyday tasks'. I'm well over 60 and still training albeit not like i did when i was in my younger years. Great channel by the way.👍
I’m 52 with a 5 year old daughter and a 8 year old son and I don’t get any rest lol, im still running around like a maniac every day and I will be prepping forever cause I really enjoy it as a hobby as well as something that may one day save our lives or just get us through a bad patch( and it’s a great excuse to buy lots of boys toys lol ).
