  • Recumbent trikes make a great exercise for everyone from experienced calorie burners to people with disabilities. Join us on a lovely Saturday afternoon in Winter Garden, FL for a leisurely exercise discovery!
FYI - the recumbent trike tested was a Catrike Villager - a wonderful ride in many ways. However, don’t “lay down” like we did - that was just an experiment. You should definitely get properly fitted to ensure the best ride and safety.

Great video -- totally enjoy seeing people getting excited about recumbent trikes. Prior to retiring to Florida in September 2018 from Stuttgart, Germany, I knew nothing about them. I had ridden my regular bike on the Withlacoochee Trail and noticed all the recumbent trikes. That is when I decided I needed to try one out. My first was the Catrike 5.5.9. I was immediately bit by the recumbent bug; couldn't get enough either. I ended up buying the Catrike Dumont even though I thought that the suspension on the two front wheels could have been better. I LOVE MY TRIKE and have written it about 320 miles in 1.5 month on the Withlacoochee. My longest rides were only 26 miles, but I regularly ride 22 miles. It is so nice to have the butt, hand, neck, arm pain a thing of the past. I just love the trike because I can sit back and observe nature while riding so much more than on a bicycle. I ride with my seat leaned back as far as it will go. I'm 6'4" and required an extra long boom. Anyway, I hope you guys decide for recumbent trikes and ride frequently together. Hope to see you on the Withlacoochee sometime! Mark

We thoroughly enjoy looking at nature as well, it’s nice to have a trike that doesn’t cause pain or discomfort, we were less motivated to ride regular bikes because of that.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the recumbent trike! We hope we can join the club soon.

Hi I am very seriously considering a trike and a Dumont also. Are you pleased with the Dumont after many miles on it? I am also just under 6'4" with a 34 inseam. Being taller like I am has the Dumont been a good choice? Could you explain your thoughts on the front suspension? Did you test ride the HP Scorpion FS before deciding on the Dumont? Unfortunately the closest trike dealer for me is 3 hours away so it is not easy to just swing by and test out different models and brands. Funny I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale for 30 years and now live out West I hope you are enjoying FL. Any advice would be appreciated.

I just bought a Sunseeker CXS Fat tad Trike in July. I'm 5'1. They cut the boom down to fit me. Feels so good to be able to ride a bike after knee replacement surgeries last year. I did get electric assist. I'm sure this is helping me build my leg strength! So much fun too!

My wife and i both ride Catrikes. The "modification " needed for shorter riders is really no big deal. The dealer we bought ours from has a shortened boom on hand to test ride with. She was able to ride one perfectly fitted to her before we purchased. They did the modification for free on hers when we bought it. No big deal and we absolutely love them!!

I’m almost 78 and got the Trike bug. I ordered a Terra Trike Rambler and five months passed by before delivery. For just under three weeks now, I have been hitting the trails here in Texas. I’m totally addicted.

I just wanted to thank you for making these videos on your journey to check out trikes. I learned a lot from you and it definitely taught me to test ride them because like you, I test rode them and found out they fit and perform differently. I bought a full suspension ICE Adventure (not the HD model) and absolutely love it. It felt perfect from the first moment I sat down. I am 5’2” and found many of the trikes were to long in the boom. I did not want to buy a trike that requires modification outside manufacture specifications (cutting the boom). Plus, cutting the boom would make it hard to resale. I am curious, did you guys buy trikes?

For sure about the saddle soreness. What is scarier is taking a mirror and looking at between you legs and seeing the horrible bruising that you get from any 2 wheel bikes.
I being a Diabetic, Blood Pressure issues (having to take blood thinning medication), older age (72) even younger people have balance issues, and just wanting to take my time and enjoy Nature the Trike does that.

Recumbent trikes are great. This is an older video, but if you haven't looked into it more, I would say that they should be able to adjust the boom and move the seat to achieve a good fit for your height. Different brands of trike have different adjustments, so if Cat Trike doesn't fit try a Terra Trike or an Azub (my preferred trike)

IF you are still searching for a trike check out HP Velotechnik. When I tried several brands out at The Bicycleman in Alfred Station, NY I realized that HP has indirect steering which I much prefer. I got an fs26 Scorpion and enjoy a ride every day now after three years. Sooo comfortable, and a great workout. It folds up to fit in a small SUV so you can go to different places to ride. The thing is a blast!

Thanks for the suggestion! Funny you should say this because we found a great place in Tampa called Bent Revolution that has HP and other brands to test. I was actually able to ride on a fs26! And I have to say that I personally agree with you about the indirect steering! We’re actually covering our testing process in some upcoming videos! I can’t wait to make a final decision!

Trikes are nice in the flat land for sure. Little harder for the hilly parts of the country but yet very doable once you have some basic fitness under your belt. For some that have limiting health issues on their fitness they are a godsend.(back issues for sure or those who suffer from balance issues) Keep up the nice work on your videos. Maybe talk a little more about the technical advantages and benefits of trikes for those with limiting health issues. Cheers!

Did you all finally buy a recumbent trike? I just purchased my very first after turning 50. I want to stay healthy and I’ve always wanted one. I found a used one that needed repairs and was in bad shape so I did the repairs myself: upgraded the rear tire from 20 inches to 26, added rear suspension (it had none) \. The original seating was homemade out of wood and I managed to use parts from two bikes and a weight bench to finish it up. -!: now I’m enjoying it.

Just an FYI, laying down in a trike like you did is a bad idea. You have less “push” power and can cause yourself back and knee pain. You need to be properly fitted for a trike. The villager you were riding has a minimum x-seam of 39 inches. Their pocket model has a minimum of 36 inches and might fit you without any modification. All recumbent trikes also have a maximum x-seam and for really tall riders most companies offer an extended boom. There are a number of good brands available with different models to meet different riders needs. I am a big fan of catrike and have been riding one for almost 10 years. I would never go back to two wheels, trikes are just too much fun and so much more comfortable and a great way to get and stay active! Thanks for the video.

    • @funfitnessrocks7842
      @funfitnessrocks7842  5 років тому

Thanks! We completely agree! We certainly didn’t intend to suggest that one should lay down on a trike (like our experiment in the video). We are looking at the options - the “pocket” Catrike looks to be a perfect model for a shorter person. Thanks again for the info - very much appreciated!

Why is it that so many trike riders start out all eager and end up fading rapidly away? Because trikes are a crappy ride. So many limitations compared with a bicycle that they just aren't worth driving around unless you have to.
