    I like the EVA's image more. It looks more organic and film like.

    seriously at 15:42 the noise from the C200 is jumping off my screen on my iMac 5k monitors. There's a party in the shadows next to the model's head. The eva-1 is much much cleaner. In general the noise in the shadows (especially color noise) has been truly underwhelming from the C200 and has been commented on many times since its release.
    I'd have to also say the additional magenta coming from the Canon is wreaking havoc on the skin tones. The eva-1 also looks a good deal more realistic in its color renditions. At 10:32 the foliage in the Canon looks really off whereas there's actual warmth and yellow in the foliage from the Panasonic as you'd expect. I will say that if you're not handling reds well (Canon), you can't possibly do great skin tones as red is a major components of proper skin tone.

      I agree. I liked the colors in the EVA more in a lot of the test and the C200 seemed much noisier on my screen.

      So confused here too! Everything they seem be saying feels like the opposite of what I'm seeing! As if they got the two sides mixed up!

      I'm curious how you guys are viewing this because I actually have a hard time seeing ANY noise after UA-cam has run it through their compression. Everything is just so damn muddy. Like I said above, our comments were accurate to what we saw in the offline files.

      1440p calibrated monitors on youtube. I see giant dancing blocks on the c200 while you guys are complimenting on how clean it is. Were they uploaded at the same mb/s compression settings?

    The EVA-1 Looks much more cinematic and the Canon Looks like a Video like footage which has been saturated alot

    Love the colors out of the EVA. Subtle but very pleasing.

  • @getfmlr

    These kinds of videos are great to come back to and watch many years later. Even though majority of the comments seem to have the EVA1 winning, the reality is that the c200 outsold the EVA by a lot.
    In the end its the consumer that determines a winner and I've seen so much content from the c200s vs the EVA. Yes, all c200 owners still hate the fact that Canon never implemented a 10bit codec but here we are in 2023 and I was able to pick up a used c200 for less than 2k CAD. Its an awesome camera just as its older brother the c100 is.

    I think cleanliness is not the main point of the dual native ISO, but dynamic range retention in low-light situations.

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 6 років тому +1

      That's probably a valid point, but I'm also wondering what low-light situations require a huge dynamic range? Concerts are the only ones that come to mind, but truthfully I would be nervous shooting a log profile in that kind of situation unless I were using an Arri. Most of these low-end cameras don't do well shooting log in low light.

    • @stevenbaileytv
      @stevenbaileytv 6 років тому

      Kenneth Merrill I can think of a couple, but the application is limited, you're right. It would be useful in narrative or doc situations where the main light source is fire, for instance - you could expose the face properly while keeping some detail in the flames that would otherwise be lost in other cameras where you'd have to ramp up ISO. Mainly retaining detail in shots where practicals are in frame.

    • @kennethcmerrill

      Ooh, flames are a really good one! Good point.

  • @gsherlock

    When not pushed to extremes and exposed properly I thought the image from the Eva was much more pleasing.

    Seems strange to say the Canon looked more true to life. Were your white balances off too? The Canon is not just magenta shifted, but cooler, while the EVA skin tones look natural and warm.

    • @dusanbartolovic1946
      @dusanbartolovic1946 3 роки тому

      Yea... they WB is off on both cameras... EVA is too warm while canon too cold magentish. They say they applied contrast on both of the cameras, i wonder if they used official log translation LUT-s or they did it manually (which is not correct way to do it)

    Thank you guys for taking the time to review the cameras. Very informative. Many are commenting on the color and noise and fact is, those two can be controlled almost 100% in post with color correction techniques and denoise software (unless you're shooting at ridiculously high ISO's). They both shoot in different LOGs so of course the images are going to look slightly different, even after a simple grade or LUT applied. While testing camera's, of course users want to make sure the image coming from the camera is quality. Both of these cameras deliver on that front. Each camera offers different options but bottom line, it comes down to how the shooter is going to USE the camera. Both camera's get the job done, however, for me, personally, I chose the C200 because of the DPAF (which once you use, you'll realize it's a true game changer!), touchscreen EVF (EVA doesn't even come with an EVF out of the box), ergonomics of the camera and the potential to be able to shoot cinema raw lite when needed. The C200 had more of the feature I felt are important and is a dream to shoot with. There will be people that will feel the same way about the EVA. Choices are great.

    Wow, can you guys say biased towards Canon? Many times the EVA-1 was cleaner, especially in the lowlight and over and under exposed tests. I️ was excited to see this review but I’m disappointed to see how biased their opinions were.

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 6 років тому +3

      Very true! Honestly I don't have any investment in either system. So, I don't really have a reason to prefer one over the other. I'm excited for any camera that works the way I like it too. If we seem hard on one or the other, it's because it doesn't fit our workflow, not because it's a bad camera. It's crazy how people feel loyal to one brand or another, to the point of confrontation. I've found most of the people who get combative about this stuff do so because they own the camera and feel like they need to justify their investment. Truth is, you don't need to justify anything. Use the tools you like.

    Okay, I don't own a Panasonic camera. I have joined multliple camera forums, however, because I'm trying to make a decision on my first foray into 4k camera territory. Basically, as far as this interview is concerned, I don't have a dog in the fight and am camera agnostic for the most part. ( I currently own a Sony F35 and Sony F3) But I have to say, when the gentlemen doing this test were somewhat fawning over the Canon image vs the Panasonic I was thinking...did they mix camera sides up or something? The C200's image looks noisier and the color doesn't look anywhere near as nice as the Panasonic's. I believe things can be somewhat subjective, but...yeah. Weird. Really weird.

    • @TheSlantedLens

      UA-cam also does some compression for the videos so it could be that as well.

    Honestly the colour issues you are getting with the Panasonic is down to the vlog.
    And the vlog LUT.
    If u didn’t use vlog the panny colours are MUCH better.
    But obviously you do then lose some DR so....
    But a better LUT may well fix the colour. (Official vlog rec 709 LUT is crap)

    • @michaelrempel9025
      @michaelrempel9025 6 років тому

      rec 709 itself is crap. We need a better standard but for now that is it. Almost nothing in consumer hardware exists that is that bad any more. but people gota keep with the tradition. I guess the internet will do away with it soon enough even if the traditional TV stations never upgrade.

    I had a C300 and experienced all sorts of problems with it. It is not a good field camera and is very sensitive to humidity, So when I had to get a 4K camera I had to choose between C200 and Eva1. Well, as good as the picture might be with the C200, I doubt it is stronger than the C300 so I opted for the Eva1. So far I don't regret it at all and I am waiting impatiently for the Version 2.0 Firmware Upgrade. They promised end of March, only one day left, what's going on Panasonic?

    Probably not the first person to say this, but when doing videos about cameras that shoot 4k, it'd be really nice to be able to see the footage IN 4k instead of 1080p. Especially now that so many people have 4k/5k monitors these days...but cool video!

    You can fly a C300mkII (with a light lens canon 50mm 1.4 or Contax 28 2.8 or canon 10-18) on the ronin-m. I don't think either of these will cause you a problem. I dont even need to use Cinemilled counter weights or the big battery. I hate the DJI plate so i have custom small wedge i have permanently on the QR mount. This allows me to use the default QR platform with Arca Swiss plates which are fast super fast with my Kessler QR plates. This also decreases the "footing" height of the camera :). Hope all this makes sense :).

    I guess its hard to make any comment here as I'm watching a compressed image..
    But to me the EVA-1 out performed in both the ISO test and the Dynamic range test. In the dynamic range test the c200 looked as though it got grainy far sooner than the EVA. I also prefer the slightly warmer tint on the EVA and found c200's cooler look less flattering. I agree that the c200 looked a little better at -4 stops. (But as you say, who would do that!? haha).
    In the ISO test, the EVA looked much sharper and cleaner. Could just be the compression, would you guys be able to make samples of the two files available for a real comparison?
    Cheers for the vid!

    Good tests guys. Being a c200 owner There are somethings you guys didn’t even mention till the end But saying the c200 doesn’t have 422 10bit at the start is kind of incorrect. It does 422 10bit and 12bit but only shooting Raw which looks amazing! Also the dualpixel AF is a pretty big deal. Would be curious how the autofocus is on the eva1? To bad it wasn’t in the test. Overall good comparison. Thanks for the samples.

      If only they had done raw like red or bm. So 4:1 Raw or 6:1 etc. The current data rate is just ridiculous. Also I can see horrible noise on her left elbow already at 1600 iso on the C200. The Eva is definitely cleaner unless there's some weird render setting bug or youtube compression issue.

    Holy cow, please do FULL disclosure on how you're grading this. are you testing the camera or your grading skills here? I did a color managed comparison (although unscientifically) and the eva won hands down. canon pushes its look on you a lot. the eva I can mix in with the alexa in a pinch.
    To the point of noise: Panasonic does not noise reduce internally, the c200 couldn't not noise reduce in the start (user base made them firmware in an actual off setting).
    Eva also has less artifacts, better sharpness, better DR and it gives you all DR in log and canon markets their stupid internal RAW by artificial limitations on the log and codec.

    Not a great comparison really, anyone who buys the C200 isn't going to use the 8 bit mp4 very much, you should be testing each camera at it's best...otherwise, what's the point?

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 6 років тому +3

      Really? I know a lot of people who plan to use the 8bit mp4. That's pretty much all I will ever use it for when I rent. Plenty of people will be using these cameras for corporate, doc, or event work, where RAW (or even the EVA1's upcoming 400mbps codec) is overkill and too workflow intensive.
      The C200 raw workflow is a hassle (unless you do everything in Resolve and have a SERIOUS editing rig). If I want raw, I'll rent a Red. R3D is so much more friendly.

    I enjoyed this and I get why someone might want to compare compressed codecs, but I'd think most of the audience is more interested in seeing the very best each camera can do, which would mean shooting RAW on the C200. I mean doing over/under tests and not using the recording mode that is literally designed to to be pushed and pulled seems like maybe not showing the C200 the best it can be (and was the C200 black balanced)?
    PS - re: magenta push, you have the option of adjusting the green/magenta axis when you dial in your WB (check the "CC" option next to your kelvin value).

    Did not shot in raw? Haha, why? And you say canon has only 8bit 420? This is simply not true. It has internal RAW! No one has a better format (besides of BM).
    How did you grade the footages? Color primaries of the color spaces need to be adjusted properly (lutcalc or aces to help).

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 6 років тому

      We already did a review of the C200 where we shot raw. We designed this test to compare the compressed codecs of the two cameras.
      C200 footage was graded by hand with lumetri in PP, and EVA-1 implemented Panasonic's Vlog to 709 LUT after primary exposure adjustments. I'm not a colorist, and we only have a few hours to shoot these things so it's very quick and dirty. Would love to see any test results you have!

    Just want to throw out that I'm seeing the same problem with the C200 under-exposure test that everyone is talking about. Huge, awful, videoy, chunks at -1, -3, and -4 EV. At minus -3 and 4, this would start to make sense considering the codec, but it's really weird how it seems to clear up at -2EV after having looked awful at -1EV. The EVA1 looked much better throughout the test in my opinion, until they both looked unusable.
    In the end though, I think you came to a similar conclusion that I did. Ergonomically and tool wise, Canon has a slight upper hand. The screen is better (although not a huge fan of the design), the different AF features are brilliant as usual, the rosette mount for the handle means you can use all different 3rd party accessories, and the controls are a bit more responsive in my opinion. I do like how light the EVA1 is, means much easier to shoot handheld which is huge for me. While it doesn't have an EVF, I know some people find this beneficial especially when you're mounting it on a gimbal. Just having the ability to completely strip it down is quite nice. Glad you mentioned the menu system, besides the GH series, I've always thought Pana made the worst menus to use. While this is a little better when compared to the DVX200, Canon is much simpler to work with.
    But then it comes down to the codecs and I think you hitting on that is really important. Without a good middle codec, I think I'm going to find myself wanting to turn to the EVA1 much more. The RAW on the C200 is incredible, 12bit, beautiful color, HUGE file size. Any type of fast workflow will not be able to accommodate this unless if Canon really pushes NLE integration on all fronts, 256GB CFast cards stop costing $700, and storage gets just a tiny bit easier and cheaper for more people (although we might already be there for that one, it's just a hassle to make work). Sure the MP4 isn't awful, but wouldn't I go with codec that is just the same size, but I can get even more out of it? If you're going to give us a mid range camera, you've got to give us a mid range format to shoot in.
    Also, thanks for chiming in with more thoughts Kenneth, really appreciating your responses.

    Hello Jay P... I think that you are missing the real deal with one of the best Canon Cinema camera ever... Cinema Raw Light. You can get 2-bit at 29.97P/23.98P/25P/24P or 10 bit at 59.94P/50P. Please.. next time ask us for the Cfast memory card.

      We already shot a review of the C200 where we talk about Canon Raw Lite. This test was designed to compare the lower quality codecs of each camera. A lot of people won't be shooting raw all the time.

    I would love to see the side by side color grade 'to each other', as in grade to make c200 look like eva and vise versa. You did no color adjustments at all, and that tells a bigger story. If you graded shots toward some extremes to copy a few cinematic looks that would reveal more as well. To me the center of a 'normal' shot is not exactly discriminating territory, while grading outside the box is more informative.

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 6 років тому

      I can kind of see what you're saying, but then the methodology gets very difficult to follow for viewers. I think do zero color adjustments helps people see what they will have to deal with, and it highlights the differences in color science between cameras. If you're trying, you can make any two cameras match--I don't think it's a very useful demonstration unless you've seen the starting point for each camera. Unfortunately we just don't have a lot of time for these things so we just do the basics. Thanks for the input though.

    I’m surprised you made no mention of the chromatic aberration. Especially in the 120fps footage - the green fringe seemed way more pronounced and saturated in the C200 footage.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  6 років тому

      Hi James, chromatic aberration is apparent in all footage when you're shooting at that fps on these types of cameras. The best way to avoid it is to not shoot the camera's max slow-motion setting or making sure you have A LOT of light. Hope that helps!

    For me it is unfair dance of Canon around EVA1. Nobody makes fair comparison. Example: Take
    Gamma Scientific NVG-4040 and old but good PMS Electro-optics LHGR-0050 with LPS-115 power supply. An you will see C-200 far behind EVA-1
    All 3 filters ( or more)of this Radiometer gives you distance color temperature field of view Automatic gain control Manual zoom Internal calibration source
    and portability . All in military format A,B,C by NVG filters
    If you are able to get this equipment ( around 2k I believe or less) you can make good money on it and deliver new standard of measurement and comparison .At the end it is your money spend. And you do not have to rely only on " professionally paid" comparisons any longer. .
    No more : to flat, to green, to dark, to high ISO Too much noise.
    Just numbers, no guessing .
    I think there is also less expensive way to do the test people will find credible.
    Interesting is that checking in addition to all of the above comparing lenses F 1.4 vs 1.8 or T2.2 is no longer individual experience. Just numbers, no guessing .
    Happy 2018

      do thank you too. I did that test and that is why I have EVA1 not C200. Both are nice cameras but Oh boy....... I'm lucky I did not buy Canon. I do understand business life dependencies as well. You guys deliver good time well spend. Do I agree with everything you say? As long as it does not crisscross an area heavily occupied by physics you are excellent team.
      Think about similar means of measurement I have mentioned to you.
      Once you have it, plenty of new subscribers will find you unique, and your expertise will make manufacturers and distributors to give you not only their gears for free, but plenty of money in different deals all around. Best of all it is not only cameras but lenses as well .
      Nobody did it as of yet .
      There is no single video in entire UA-cam showing such form of testing.
      I hope Canon will be interested with paying for no tests of this kind to be made.( joke) :)
      Gamma Scientific NVG-4040 new is very expensive, but used one shows quite few times per year on Ebay and is sold with "lightning speed." Check Ebay -for today there is none. You may try alternative methods as well.
      I wish you the best and do thank you very much ,for your work.

    U used a similar 150Mbps codec on both, but not identical.... u say @ 8:47.
    So Canon C200 would be MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Resolution: 3840x2160 Bit Rate: 150 Mbps Color Sampling: YCC 4:2:0 8 bit (if it's not raw).
    What about Panasonic EVA 1 ? It's not clear yet.
    MOV : 4:2:2 (10 bits).... or 4:2:0 (8 bits) ???
    MOV: 4:2:2 (10 bits) 422LongGOP 150M is not exactly the same than MOV: 4:2:0 (8 bits) 420LongGOP 150M.

    The "Slanted Lens"...people...the ones who made this video is biased towards Canon..
    .. For (1).....they are both hypocritical....and flawed in their argument.... Heres how..
    ......... In the opening comments... They mention EVA doesn't have a proper EVF and that the LCD you rely on.. is soft to begin with..so even addidng a loupe, is adding problems to problems that are already their".... This is what they said.... ..WHICH IS ALL TRUE in that regards....Only, a camera is not defined by an EVF ALONE!!!!
    Lets continue.. Furthermore..because of this FLAW with EVA.. They say ...."Its not even a real conparison, that ...the price point of EVA is skewed because the Canon C200 has an EVF"....... ..
    ..... Well. First off.. The FLAW in saying this.....is ......you dont judge or compare cameras...... on one spec, and then.... decide that....thats the spec that makes up a price point in a camera..... In other words...should I say...."That Canon's price point is skewed, because it does not have broadcast codecs.. When EVA does? .. Nor 10 bit 4.22"???? "That Canon should not even be in this price point." SHOULD I EVEN MAKE THAT SILLY COMMENT? Of course not!!!!...See what I mean? ........ARE YOU LISTENING Slanted Lens??? ...
    ....Not to mention.... should I also say ......"Its not even a fair comparison that Canons price point is also skewed, because it does not have dual native ISO. ......240 fps..etc?".
    So the comment of Slanted Lens when saying...."This is not a fair comparison in price point because EVA does not have a proper EVF.".... IS A SILLY COMMENT AND IS NOW DEBUNKED!!
    Now.......... they are hypocrites....insofar.....because they know this and even (SAY)..... "No camera is perfect and every camera has thier issues." They actually say that....admiting Canon's flaws.....So to say that........
    .......and in this same video...also say....and point out that Eva's LCD or lack of EVF..........Now, .becomes a moote point and is hypocritical!.
    NOW, ..... I can go on.... about Evas color science....even looking better and more true to life.. Just look at the lady's red top..etc.. Eva clearly wins.. Bit I wont go on...So... This is truly a flawed video..as well as made by canon fanboys.as you can clearly see the flaws in this video.. .. There you have it..

  • @albertcurielx

    Through and through though, the canons c200 has in my opinion the most severe flaws: recording format and output. There is absolutely nothing you can do to get both quality and practicality out of it. With Canon it's "either or" and nothing in the middle. Though the 200mbs update will be available in the future, but no solid confirmation on the bit depth yet, it's hardly a step above everyone else's 150mbs codec. You can't even do a decent 4k 10bit 422 external recording. Eva1 on the other hand will at least offer raw to an external at some point and time to an external recorder and will have 400mbs internally. It's as though Canon has their game rules rigged for immediate failure or immediate success and Panasonic has a fair game but makes an effort to help have it all if you're willing to put in a little more effort. If that makes sense.
