No, this is not "the new format" of commodoreHUSTLE, just a fun episode playing on the yonkoma style. We play around sometimes :) (also we consider these segments different from Crapshots... we'll have to talk about this in Loading Time)
I was sad how it took me over halfway through to realize it was done as a bunch of Yonkomas, but then looking at the comments apparently I was not as slow to figure it out as I thought.
First, impressed with the Magic Card title gag. Second, even more impressed with Ian's consistent running pace over that distance...with toast no less!
As Ian passed by the camera I thought 'that's where I would have been completely tired'. That running action though - like the T-1000 chasing after a car with John Connor in the back.
I like how the implication is that everything from 1:36-7:03 is the third panel of the "main" 4-koma, wherein that third panel consists of a bunch of smaller 4-koma. For reference, the "main" 4-koma is: 1. [Setup] Beej asks Graham if he can open the Weeb Crate 2. [Development] Graham and Kathleen find Beej passed out having eaten Japanese snacks and read the 4-koma 3. [Climax/Turn] Beej's fever dream of various 4-koma 4. [Punchline] Kathleen is just bussing with Beej
Also, to those commenting that this feels more like a Crapshot compilation, 4-koma and Crapshots have a slightly different cadence to their setup and delivery. It's subtle, but it's akin to the musical difference from 4/4 measure to 3/4 measure.
I just want to know how out of breath he was by the time he reached his destination, and I was going to ask if an ambulance was involved but then I got to the end of the video and that question was answered.
It's honestly astonishing how many people in the comments here have seemingly never seen a sitcom before. Departing wildly from and then returning to your own format at the end of a single episode (in pursuit of referencing a different medium) is a very traditional thing for a sitcom to do, and indeed something that this one has done before. Have youse all never seen a musical episode? Or a christmas special, for instance, in the style of another specific work? Being unfamiliar with what's being referenced is going to be par for the course for a lot of western viewers here (me included, for given definitions of "familiar") but freaking out at the mere concept of an episode that experiments with format is... odd.
I really don't watch any TV shows at all, and I was confused at first when I saw the second intro and then the third, but even so I agree it becomes obvious this is a special episode, even if (like me) you have never heard of whatever this is imitating.
People who see one episode in a different style and assume it's the new format going forward are overreacting. The "one take" Friday Nights episode (Commandeered IIRC) was well received for its creative exploration, despite Magic players liking to complain. To go even further and quote Maro: "If you have something that everybody likes but nobody loves, it's doomed to fail." Sure this wasn't 100% my thing, but I'm really glad LRR decided to try something different with cH this time around.
I really liked this episode. I'm a big fan of this style of show, so it was really fun to watch you guys take a crack at it. If you'd be into doing it again, I'd be very down to watch it.
I feel like the only reason I don’t watch every crapshot is that it takes so much work to click on a short video and it ends before you can find another one. If they were in this style or maybe if they released compilations of them monthly I would watch them.
I live in Japan and I have seen that anime trope of the girl running off to school with the toast in her mouth only once... but that means it does happen!
Ah those snippets. Reminds me a of Pitagora Suichi (Pythagora Switch) doing the Rube Goldberg machines for theirs. Nice Japanese show feel/homage guys. I'm enjoying how the show has become your experimental show in regards to different filming types, or filmed in a similar manner to a show or movie. Looking forward to what's next.
Coming back to this 6 years later on a CH rewatch and this is quite possibly my favourite episode so far, just the sheer quality of jokes that had me chuckling plus being a fun yonkoma style episode, just an amazing job well done by everyone involved
this is seriously one of my most favorite HUSTLEs, i hope you guys do another yon-koma or parody style HUSTLE like this when the Everything settles down 🙇♂️🙇♂️
Okay. This was amazing. Thanks for spelling out what the hell Yon-Coma is right at the beginning, btw. That helped a lot. It took me a while to realize that we were witnessing Beej's stream-of-consciousness style coma, and even longer to figure out that it was the video equivalent of a series of LRR four-panel comics, but once it landed, my mind was blown. And I was delighted to see my interpretation confirmed in the final shot. This was your actual goddamned art for the year. Well done.
I know this is an old comment but to watch the moon base battlegrounds video. At one point Ian runs full-tilt down the hall chasing after someone. No gag, he's just trying to catch them so he can shoot them. He runs the same way. I think Ian just runs that way.
Halfway through I was like, this all Beej's bad mochi fever dream and then Kathleen confirmed it! Also, I'm impressed with Ian's commitment in the literal running gag, he was going flat out and didn't slow down at all.
turbo1431 You should check out "rapidfire" it's a series of sketches LRR did way back. Every episode is a bunch of very short stories. It has a very similar feel to this one.
It took me a while to get what you were doing, but once I got it, WOW! Brilliant idea. Now I need to re-watch it in the right mental context. I enjoyed this a lot as a one-off concept piece. :D
This was a delight to watch. I had no idea what was going to happen next. I loved the range you gave yourselves in between the funny and surreal. I did not want the video to end. Thanks for making it.
Everyone needs a friend like Beej in their life. Some who, when they think they've been asked to get you lunch with extra human effluence on it, doesn't ask for confirmation and just gets to work.
I didn't "get" the Yonkoma thing live (because you broke it up in LRL and I just forgot about it), but this reminded me of your old RapidFire sketches. I loved it. Great as an experimentation with Hustle.
That first joke at 0:25 forced me to stop the video because I couldn't pay attention and was going to pass out due to laughing too hard. Comedy is a serious business.
Personally for me Paul had the best lines, joke delivery, acting, and was my favorite over all. Also the Bald guy is weird but he seems like a fun guy IRL so i don't want to give him to much shit. Production quality was top notch. Not enough Graham, but that's ok his Vlogs are great so i get my fill of Graham via that. Commodore Hustle has changed so much over its life and i look forward to every episode, thank you.
I think this might just be my favorite cH in awhile. Honestly, it feels less like Crapshots and more like your old Rapidfire sketches, which were, in turn, old favorites of mine. Well done!
I feel like there are 2 kinds of commenters here. Those who know Pop Team Epic and the rest. This whole ep is such a homage, but a lot of people have no idea what's going on.
I actually don't know what they are referencing but I did pick up on the fever dream, and knowing beej's character was just sort of along for the ride expecting a lot of weeb jokes that go over my head but are still funny on levels that are accessible to me. That said, if this were every episode I'd probably not tune in to commodore hustle as i'm not the target audience in that case.
I see so many people who think this is a lazy crapshots collection, not noticing recurring themes or deliberate structure, despite explaining it at the start
That was amazing and reminded me a lot of old school TV show intros. Was amazing and laughing constantly. Keep doing what you are doing and some more of these would be awesome. One for every person possibly??
I like this, I think it's a good homage and I like it when you do things to break up the format of cH, especially when it gives you more freedom to do fun things.
~~~PSA~~~ 1. This is a collection of yonkoma (a Japanese style of 4-panel comedy comics), not Crapshots. 2. This is not the new format of cH. Everything was done as yonkoma as the joke for the episode. 3. No, this is not just a Pop Team Epic parody. There are other (and IMO better) yonkoma out there. Go read Azumanga Daioh or something, you uncultured swines. 4. Yonkoma is serious business.
1. Internet people create content on a cultural trend they enjoy 2. Most fans misunderstand their intentions 3. Other fans correct them in comments in a clever way 4. Inception or Deathception ?
All these different kind of Hustle logo's, awesome ! Furthermore there is a boomstick in the side mirror of a car that Ian comes across while running to....
I like it when you guys get experimental with the scripted stuff! Not enough of that in recent years. This plus the single-take shot in Friday Nights recently really pushed the ol' LRR boundaries!
Gotta admit, I was not expecting a Pop Team Epic parody
Nice
It's shit (as in good)
The only problem with this, is you have crap-shots witch are usually already in Yokohama style.
I liked it, something different to watch on a lazy Sunday morning 👍🏻
I'm still waiting on the 3rd installment of Battle Royale Moonbase.
First, impressed with the Magic Card title gag. Second, even more impressed with Ian's consistent running pace over that distance...with toast no less!
TheNovusSpes I was just waiting the whole time for Ian to get shoulder tackled. Maybe by Cory, who would then shout "meet cute mother f@#ker!".
And with the perfectly-timed bird flyby at the beginning of the shot.
221b I had to go back and look for the bird. Thanks for pointing it out.
I was just waiting for the camera to cut away but no... he just kept on being the Toast Terminator all the way...
What a guy.
Here's what all the cards are: Cold-Water Snapper, On Serra's Wings, Mesa Unicorn, Mammoth Spider, Opt, D'Avenant Trapper, Orcish Vandal, Rampaging Cyclops, Elfhame Druid, Healing Grace, Urza's Tome, Skittering Surveyor, Triumph of Gerrard, Llanowar Elves, and Eviscerate.
Now we just need the exact episode over again, but with different voice actors.
Rytel In Japanese
ENDLESS 8 HUSTLE
Man Ian has great cardio.
As Ian passed by the camera I thought 'that's where I would have been completely tired'. That running action though - like the T-1000 chasing after a car with John Connor in the back.
Hats off to the man... that was a long run with no slowing down!!!
And rhythm!
@@velvetisis And reduced breathing to keep that bread in place.
Some say he is still running to this very day.
I like how the implication is that everything from 1:36-7:03 is the third panel of the "main" 4-koma, wherein that third panel consists of a bunch of smaller 4-koma.
Perhaps they truly have gone "too meta"
IT WAS ALL A DREAM!
No such thing as too meta.
Your just helped me really appreciate this episode. Thank you
'BRANDON!'
'Who?'
Okay, I'm dead now and it's all your fault.
Dammit, who let Beej and Ian into the writer's office?
I can't die a happy (okay, content) man without knowing _what Ian was late for!_
It was his first day at a new school, if the format holds
And how was he late if the alarm had just gone off. I guess maybe he'd hit snooze a few times. I don't know.
I just want to know how out of breath he was by the time he reached his destination, and I was going to ask if an ambulance was involved but then I got to the end of the video and that question was answered.
I assumed he was late for the "Toast in Mouth" 5k race.
He was late to the Light Music club
I'm going to be honest, this is amazing. I love when you guys branch out into new styles.
I like to think this is just how Beej thinks normally.
Oh my god. After rewatching this for the Nth time, I got Kathleen's "I was thinking about Loss" joke. I understand. Well played.
It's honestly astonishing how many people in the comments here have seemingly never seen a sitcom before. "The one where everything was a Crapshot"
HeraldBFC yah is this the new Commodore hustle?
Billy Hall no, it's inspired by the anime / manga they were talking about. Just like that one episode heavily inspired by persona
I feel like the only reason I don’t watch every crapshot is that it takes so much work to click on a short video and it ends before you can find another one. If they were in this style or maybe if they released compilations of them monthly I would watch them.
Playlist?
Can't wait to see the loading time for this, it's fantastic, I love it! The bento box skat sure was "surreal and vulgar", a wild ride!
Hats off to whoever made the interstitials - they were phenomenal.
There's many things in life you don't expect. A Yon-Koma/Pop Team Epic style Commodore Hustle episode is certainly one of those...
I still enjoyed it.
I live in Japan and I have seen that anime trope of the girl running off to school with the toast in her mouth only once... but that means it does happen!
Za-an koku no tenshiiii no yo no niiiiiiiiiii
Guys, this was great, seriously. If you've done nothing else, you introduced me to Hellshake Yano and I will be forever grateful.
Thank you for typing this so I could look up what that joke is! I think that's the only deep cut here I missed
Maybe I'm just overthinking this, but it's supposed to imitate the short comedy like yonkoma? If that's correct, then this is brilliant.
To a molecular level my friend. Segments can be separated easily into 4 panels
Ah those snippets. Reminds me a of Pitagora Suichi (Pythagora Switch) doing the Rube Goldberg machines for theirs. Nice Japanese show feel/homage guys. I'm enjoying how the show has become your experimental show in regards to different filming types, or filmed in a similar manner to a show or movie. Looking forward to what's next.
That was amazing 😂 though as soon as Beej mentioned the yonkoma at the start I knew how this was going to play out.. marvellous editing work!!!
I don't know why but pachelbel's cannon in the key of ass made me laugh way too much
I kinda cant believe you guys went and did a pop team epic episode, my hat is off to ya.
this is seriously one of my most favorite HUSTLEs, i hope you guys do another yon-koma or parody style HUSTLE like this when the Everything settles down 🙇♂️🙇♂️
And I was delighted to see my interpretation confirmed in the final shot. This was your actual goddamned art for the year. Well done.
Well this was surreal.
So does Ian canonically do the T-1000 run, or was that just part of the hallucination?
both
I know this is an old comment but to watch the moon base battlegrounds video. At one point Ian runs full-tilt down the hall chasing after someone. No gag, he's just trying to catch them so he can shoot them. He runs the same way. I think Ian just runs that way.
Halfway through I was like, this all Beej's bad mochi fever dream and then Kathleen confirmed it!
Also, I'm impressed with Ian's commitment in the literal running gag, he was going flat out and didn't slow down at all.
I'm some random guy on the internet and this is my favorite commodore hustle episode.
I enjoyed this greatly. Ignore other commenters and do it again. Also, I NEED to see the Loading Time for this.
turbo1431 You should check out "rapidfire" it's a series of sketches LRR did way back. Every episode is a bunch of very short stories. It has a very similar feel to this one.
yeah, I feel if they had titled this as a rapidfire instead of cH, it would be getting much better reception.
This was a very good episode and I loved every second.
It took me a while to get what you were doing, but once I got it, WOW! Brilliant idea. Now I need to re-watch it in the right mental context.
I enjoyed this a lot as a one-off concept piece. :D
I was REALLY slow to get the idea. But then I laughed. Well done playing 4 panel comics on film.
It took me a minute to realize what you were doing, but it was super clever. Great episode!
New favorite cH episode (out of the new format. the longer, plot heavy episodes are a separate category), because Poptepipic is so my jam.
Ian: I'm late. *grabs toast, stuffs it in his mouth, and begins running like an A B S O L U T E U N I T*
Me: Understandable, have a nice day.
After the first few, I was wondering if Pop Team Epic was part of the brainstorming. Turns out I was right on time with another prediction.
Never stop being you, LRR.
The shout out to Bill in LRBR was heartwarming.
I’ve never really appreciated how fucking good this is until now
This was a delight to watch. I had no idea what was going to happen next. I loved the range you gave yourselves in between the funny and surreal. I did not want the video to end. Thanks for making it.
Oh my gosh! Cori's corpsing at 2.29 was hilarious! I don't care if it was intentional or not. it was excellent.
Everyone needs a friend like Beej in their life. Some who, when they think they've been asked to get you lunch with extra human effluence on it, doesn't ask for confirmation and just gets to work.
I didn't "get" the Yonkoma thing live (because you broke it up in LRL and I just forgot about it), but this reminded me of your old RapidFire sketches. I loved it. Great as an experimentation with Hustle.
Would you say that Ian being late was a running gag?
That first joke at 0:25 forced me to stop the video because I couldn't pay attention and was going to pass out due to laughing too hard. Comedy is a serious business.
Really enjoyed the meta on this one and wow all those opening titles!
Personally for me Paul had the best lines, joke delivery, acting, and was my favorite over all. Also the Bald guy is weird but he seems like a fun guy IRL so i don't want to give him to much shit. Production quality was top notch. Not enough Graham, but that's ok his Vlogs are great so i get my fill of Graham via that. Commodore Hustle has changed so much over its life and i look forward to every episode, thank you.
the interesting/sad thing about Ian's late bit, is that he never ran into the one person to change his world.
I really liked this video. I'm glad you're trying new stuff. Had a lot of fun trying to separate the panels. The PUBG one was especially good to me.
I appreciate all of this episode, a refreshing experiment with something different and very well executed. Thanks Drs LRR! :)
So late to saying this, but I envy Ian’s form for running. And his cardio. And his friend circle...
I think this might just be my favorite cH in awhile. Honestly, it feels less like Crapshots and more like your old Rapidfire sketches, which were, in turn, old favorites of mine. Well done!
Excellent idea, amazing execution. I loved it!
"I wrote 'a solo performance of Pachelbel's Canon in Ass' and laughed so hard I passed out." And I nearly did the same.
"Brendan!" "Who?" *_welp there i go_*
Holy crap, Ian went to the Tom Cruise school of on camera running. That guy can really move.
I love when you guys go super high-concept. This might be my favorite cH yet.
Kathleen''s arms are at an extremely aesthetically pleasing angle in the post-credit scene. Love how they match up to each other.
I feel like there are 2 kinds of commenters here. Those who know Pop Team Epic and the rest. This whole ep is such a homage, but a lot of people have no idea what's going on.
Or just people familiar with 4koma manga in general.
I actually don't know what they are referencing but I did pick up on the fever dream, and knowing beej's character was just sort of along for the ride expecting a lot of weeb jokes that go over my head but are still funny on levels that are accessible to me. I see so many people who think this is a lazy crapshots collection, not noticing recurring themes or deliberate structure, despite explaining it at the start
It was almost too meta for me, but still very enjoyable.
I did not know how much I needed this until I watched it. This is fantastic!
Why did this feel like a fever dream, but was simultaneously the best thing I’ve ever watched?
I need to exercise so I can run like Ian, congratulations you are my new "goals'.
Ian running at the camera filled me with fear
Do you think they even came *close* to explaining to that pensioner what was going on when Ian sprinted by with toast in his mouth?
I see PopTeamEpic is popular with LRR
I wouldn't do this specific thing again but I want more surrealish humor like this
That was amazing and reminded me a lot of old school TV show intros. Was amazing and laughing constantly. Keep doing what you are doing and some more of these would be awesome. One for every person possibly??
A format buck for every person might be interesting, but the Yonkoma thing is Beej-specific. You could say Kathleen's was the Persona episode.
I like this, I think it's a good homage and I like it when you do things to break up the format of cH, especially when it gives you more freedom to do fun things.
I really loved this episode, but I kept waiting for a second act reairing with dubbed voice overs or recasting.
Okay, but who would dub over Beej in the repeat
Geminias Beej dubs them all, except Beej who is either dubbed by Cory, or just by the Beej-drop everytime he opens his mouth.
I loved this as a change to the format (and an extended Pop Team Epic reference)!
~~~PSA~~~
1. This is a collection of yonkoma (a Japanese style of 4-panel comedy comics), not Crapshots.

2. Most fans misunderstand their intentions
3. Other fans correct them in comments in a clever way
4. Inception or Deathception ?
All these different kind of Hustle logo's, awesome !
Furthermore there is a boomstick in the side mirror of a car that Ian comes across while running to....
This was pretty awesome. My favorite CH in a long while, actually.
After a while I started to feel "we get it, you're a weeb!" to both Ian and Beej
The entire episode took place in Beej's head.
.... yes?
I like it when you guys get experimental with the scripted stuff! Not enough of that in recent years. This plus the single-take shot in Friday Nights recently really pushed the ol' LRR boundaries!
This. Was. Brilliant.
And so confusing.
Some say that Ian is still running to this day
Ian definitely has good cardio
Dat commitment to the bit by Ian!!!
I never thought "Live Action Yon-Comas" was a thing I would see, but here we are.
B R I L L I A N T
I get it, each little scetch is a little comic style thing. Absolutely brilliant
Not gonna lie, these tiny hustles were exactly what I needed today.
Omg I get it this whole episode was taking place in beiges mind as food poisoning sets in
And the legends say that Horner-san is still running to this day.
That ice shave bit was great
Ignore everyone dissing this. They are entitled to their opinions but to me this is beautiful.
This hustle felt like an episode of Pop Team Epic.
This is delightful. Wait... is this a cry for help? Does that make me a bad person for loving it?
I enjoyed this, don't do it again.
This. This is the correct comment
this is basically how I feel as well.
Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I did really like this, but I don't actually want more of it.
Well, this all went over my head, but kudos for trying something new...
Everyone's going on about Crapshots, and I'm just over here having some Rapid Fire nostalgia.
After more than 2 YEARS I FINALLY understand the title!!! Man I'm slow and I'm mad at myself! 🐢😠😂
The toast-in-the-mouth run was peak weeb.
I absolutely love this.
I spent way too much brainpower looking for loss in these sketches...
That was something new. I laughed quite a lot. Great work!
So is this just Pop Team Epic: LRR Edition?
