      Great video, but I think the younger people watching this video will live to see the first commercial fusion reactor come online. In general I think the pace of advancement will be much faster, AI, real AI will be a make or break point for humans.

      Very unlikely future, but I'm glad you understand the central role of energy, and that technology is useless without it. Wonder if you have addressed peak oil and EROEI in past videos.

    Great video as always. This is how I've imagined the route that humanity would progress through if we're given the chance throughout time. Thank you for the time and effort that's spent creating these videos for us. They've helped expand any thoughts that I've had regarding some of the subjects as well as give new thoughts for subjects I haven't considered as of yet.
    Please keep up the work. :)

    Would I take the opportunity to upload my consciousnesses? Sure.
    If I were to find out tomorrow that I was merely a computer program, I'd probably , at first, be extremely confused, maybe a bit stressed out. But then I'd just continue my life as I always had.
    It all sounds fantastical, very complex. But all we can experience is what we experience. How we experience these experiences shouldnt really matter, I dont think. If that makes sense.

    Really great video Sharkee. Like this new format.
    As someone else already mentioned, I think this is the one of the better ways for humans to go.
    But it sure gets you thinking. If you would be one of those children created by the A.I with no real body, wouldn't you feel trapped?
    Also, if you can be anything you want, wouldn't you miss the feeling of accomplishment? But on the other hand, as you're only a peace of code I guess that part could easily be rewritten.
    Shit just goes weird after a certain point... and that's why we love science :D

      @maggieml931 8 років тому +3

      More places you can get energy

    • @lovehatefear1
      @lovehatefear1 8 років тому

      Eventually you would exhaust the energy on a planet or in a system, or the Sun would die, and then you would have to move. It makes more sense to be better prepared and move people in a timely way that we could then decide and agree upon. Thus we would ever be moving outward and never ending, conquering many systems and the galaxy after many millions of years. This would result in a fractured and evolutionary different species, but across all time and cultures, humans tend to display the same directive everywhere. Never stop.

    Wow, I wish that A.I. World came within my life :D

  • @ManintheArmor
    @ManintheArmor 7 років тому +1

    Exurb1a had a similar outlook on the future, one in which humanity replaced flesh with electronics and settled more with simulated experiences than physically living in reality. In this of course, not only do humans and A.I. merge (much like in that one 1995 Ghost in the Shell film), but humanity entirely merges into a singular entity that expands outwards into space to convert all mass to energy, and eventually meet other post-biological civilizations.
    Much like in the Last Question, it seems everything will eventually fade to black as the seemingly eternal dream comes to a close.
    I wonder though, if there are other energy sources beyond what we know, energies not just including nuclear fusion, black holes, and matter conversion, but perhaps energies that'd only exist in dimensions beyond our own, perhaps accessing timelines, universes, and the things between universes.

  • @Shockszzbyyous
    @Shockszzbyyous 7 років тому +2

    that is pretty scary. I think i'd rather go explore the galaxy with my human body then with a machine body. although i'd not be opposed to enhancements for my body. as long as they doing touch my brain. but we might already be moving to a scociety living in a virtual world (cell phones vr glasses)

  • @NarutoSSj6
    @NarutoSSj6 8 років тому +2

    If we evolved beyond our physical bodies, and reach intellectuality beyond our limitation to figure more about the world. Could it be possible to find free energy by an unknown phenomenon, that able us to reach unknown layers or reality. Ultimately reaching a dimension with infinite time, mass and energy to sustain and assure our propagation. Then even more unknown knowledge and heights beyond that of a assured heat death, we could have presence in the realm of gods, letting us create new universes and abstract world's in all infinity!

    • @egonzalez4294
      @egonzalez4294 8 років тому

      It's pointless to live infinitely always getting up new data; technically you'll store infinite data and will be infinitely bored at some point, and entire universes could happen inside that infinite data. It's like not existing at all.
      You need to restart to give it sense.
      I hope our actual universe works like that, since we know shit about conciousness maybe it's just recycled.

    Excellent video, Sharkee. Isaac Asimov wrote a short story in 1956 (The Last Question) that followed your scenario fairly closely. However, as the universe is dying the virtual human/computer/entity, who by now occupies the entire universe, declares "LET THERE BE LIGHT!" & the Big Bang occurs, creating an entire new universe. Thus, Asimov elevates human consciousness to godlike status.
    I love your videos & hope you get many, many more subscribers.

    just woah. This would preferably be a good way for humans to go. Though we could prevent the global warming stuff a little better. But this story seems quite likely. Thanks for sharing.
    Still trying to figure out which videos i prefer. The sci-fi or the science/maths ones.
    Sci-fi is a roller coaster of emotions, I get hyped, then happy, then deppressed as i realise it isnt real(yet maybe).
    Science and maths ones are awesome for about halfway, then you lose me, then i rewatch, eventually after about an hour of internet searches i understand it.
    But both always brings up some philosophical issues that i continue to ponder for weeks to come, and this video was no exception. So thanks sharkee and keep it up.

    Beautiful. I am not nearly as smart as this videos host, but I believe humanities singularity event will occur much, much sooner than the 1000ish yrs estimated in this sci-fi vid. Also, I find comfort in my lil brain that as our universe's stars dim and fade, an alternate universe is being born in another dimension.

    How does scientific research work in these virtual worlds? I mean, these worlds are simulated based on the knowledge humen had at this time, so the simulation is limited to this knowledge. Research must be done outside this virtual reality. But if every single human was part of this virtual reality, does scientific progress come to an end? I hope scientific progress will never come to an end, the universe is too beautiful to not be explored.

      Well you could argue that some of those servers could be used as supercomputers and "people" could still be inter5eseted in research, since curiosity is probably a basic human trait. So maybe we will create sensors from inside the simulations and share new discoveries through the network. I think, if anything, such a shared consciessness would greatly expand scientific knowledge.

    heres my problem with transferring consciousness to a computer, wouldnt it just be a copy of your current consciousness, sort of like a new instance of your consciousness, to that new instance now on the server it will feel like its you and will remember everything, the the original you would be gone. Imagine it this way, say they create a body clone of you, and it just needs your consciousness, when they copy it to the new clone body, both you and the clone will feel like they are YOU, but you are the original, so if you die, you die like normal, but to everyone else their will be nothing strange about the clone as it is the exact same as you, just a new instance

    • @sanjaymatsuda4504
      @sanjaymatsuda4504 8 років тому

      Not necessarily. It depends on how you define "copy".
      If you replace the wheels of a car, and later replace the engine, then the chassis, the seats, the bodywork, and the interior, is it still the same car? Is it a copy?
      It might be possible to do a similar process with the brain, gradually replacing neurons with electronic components.

  • @MusaM8

    Finally somone that thinks like I do, one of the answers as to why we have not seen any signs of extraterrastrial life could be that all civilizations capable of travelling between star systems eventually create a perfect virtual reality and simply loses interest in the "real" world.

      Reggie_thoughts I think it is, since there a technical limits for Transistors and everything else in PCs. I mean, for basics you need an alternating current and I guess the speed of alternation is somewhat limited, also if we build smaller processors, we have to think about Quantum mechanics which can be very weird at times.
      But I'm not an expert neither on Quantum physics nor computer processing, so don't take my word for granted. I just think there will always be limits.
      On a side not, I think there also will always be "purists" that don't want to be poart of the simulation. I mean- the idea is fascinating, but I somehow enjoy a sometimes shitty reality, than a perfect lie. But well... If given the chance I might just go into the Matrix. It's actually a hard question, I understand both sides on that.

      +akrybion By that point, transistors won't even exist. Quantum computers will also be the norm, which would speed up processes many hundred times compared to conventional "2-state" processors we have today.

      Freqxii True that, but there are still limits. How would you determine how many "people" there could be? What about crime in those worlds? And animals? Would you simulate their conciessness too?
      This is such interesting topic tbh.

    It makes me smile that 7 years ago we were wondering about fusion energy and AI in the centuries to come.
    And now, in the middle of 2024, we already had the first 1:1 fusion reaction and we are actively living with AIs.
    Only 7 years. Not centuries. That's brilliant.
    Maybe I'm stretching what we accomplished and yet, here we are.

    Nihilistic much? I know this is just a story , but what the hey...
    1. After the Paris accords which two countries which are expected to add most dirty energy sources India and China ratified, I would see more countries move towards the german approach towards renewable energy, even the economics of renewable energy is working out.
    2. I personally believe that ITER would release a working fusion reactor within the next 40-60 years
    3. Advent of self aware AI algorithms are 20-35 years away according to the guys who are tracking the progress google deepmind is making.
    Please note that it is not my intention to point errors in your story, its just a story. Just comparing it to what I believe is happening is all.

    On one hand I would love this to happen, since this shared network seems like a pure Utopia for everyone, but then again it's kind of sad, thjat we cann 100% predict, that everytrhing we build, everything we have, is finite. Maybe we will discover a way to "recycle" stars, but I guess it's unlikely and against a couple of physical laws, so... Shows how important it is to use the time we have and makes one realize just how insignificant we are and we will always be. No matter, how much we progress, we will end one day and there will not even be someone to remember us. Everything we build will crumble and we will be forgotten, just a blink.
    Loved that video.

    That was awesome to think about! Immortality has always been a dream of humanity, but I think it's silly to fear death. Even if we can "download our consciousness", it's selfish to live on aimlessly because there is no such thing as eternity for us. We need to move on and make room for the next batch of young minds. Ambition, love, heartbreak, anger, fear... this is what makes us humans and this is what fuels innovation and keeps us "human". Only the future can tell, but I'm happy I have only 60-80 years left because I'm going to make the best of it.

    This reminds me of "The Last Question" by Isaac Azimov. My absolute favorite bit of fiction ever written, along with "The Last Answer".
    I also think that the future will probably look a lot like this. Probably slightly changed time scales and minor details, but I think a lot of it will look just like this. Even the "no longer interested in the outside Universe" portion, as I think in deep time, if we realize there is nothing like hyperspace or extra dimensions or what have you to explore, then we will just lose interest in explore something else. We know we can only get so far in the Universe, before we simply can't reach anything else because we can't go fast enough, our descendants would probably just explore logic or what have you until local heat death makes the whole thing moot.
    Great video. Glad I subbed a little while ago so I could watch this.

    Your videos are enjoyable but the time progression seems really accelerated in relation to technological advancement in your stories, 700 years of research until nuclear fusion seems like an extremely elongated time span, the rate of human advancement in all fields is following a path of exponential growth. That said, this is the only major flaw in your video, and I found it very well made, and equally enjoyable (repeating myself right here aren't I? :D), keep up the good work.

    "The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov. 1956, really short story
    Your stuff is awesome, but not this time, maybe just because i followed this train of thoughts in science fiction books few times too many. But even most of Sheckley books perceived as banal in this age. I bet you can just explore some of concepts more deeply, connecting human brain to computer is more real than ever, we will see streams of data broadcasting to our brains in a lifetime, maybe sooner, we already have fast reading techniques like Spritz and a lot of people listen to podcasts with double speed. But books of my childhood explored ideas of singularity much more deeply, Stanislaw Lem, Robert Heinlein, Azimov did it better 50 years ago, and current SciFi books taking steps beyond that. I am sorry you not one of them, i binged all your videos few days ago when i just discovered your content. But this is really simple and banal for you.

    Honestly, Sharkee, that was creepy af. The willing and unnecessary removal of natural limbs, and especially organs. I wish you hadn't made me consider that.
    Not impossible, and the vid certainly kept my attention. It's just so depressingly possible...it certainly sounds like a direction our society could go in as far as our addiction to instant and constant gratification.

    Shouldn't an AI intelligence explosion occur much sooner than the timescale presented in this video? If we were to hook an ASI up to the proper experimental equipment, I daresay it could figure out exactly how the universe works. We will have perfect knowledge of physics, then biology, and so on. The AI would also design usable products using this knowledge. All we need to do is create a computer with the ability to improve its own hardware and software. We would need a revolution in nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, both of which have already started.

  • @urgentlyDuck

    I just thought about if we where living in a matrix what if the humans that created the matrix would also live in one. Like a bubble in a bubble. It could be a fermi paradox kinda thing. Like why hasn't (probably) intelligent life colonized all universe yet? Because it always ends up creating its own and therefore staying in its home galaxy. Also nuclear fusion isn't the last thing to be used for energy. You could for example try to work with smaller particles that protons. That would bring a exponential amount of more energy. Because smaller parts have a higher binding energy to mass relation. Imagine we could at one point just stop the time or break out of the universe after a certain level of energy production.

Since people might live another planet or star system without this trend reaching their mindset or point of view.

    I can see this happening in one form or another. I defiantly liked the "if we can't travel faster" idea more though. Seeing biological evolution take place over the vastness of space is so much more interesting then assimilating ourselves into the machine. Larry Niven in his Ring-world series wrote about a species that would "meld" there minds together to create a large single consciousness. Stephen Baxter also wrote about a super computer AI made up of six different human consciousness's called Earthshine in the Proxima series. I guess my point is I don't think we would maintain our identity if we do transcend. A video on the details of the idea location for home would be interesting to watch.

    i like this probability.. but u jump too much in time.. 3200+ and u are conscious in ur VR.. after the conolization, the humanity consciousness dies out cuz no energy (trillion years passed).. dont u think that in trillion years humanity has developed so much that it is not in need of outer energy?

    This doesn't seem to be a likely outcome to me. Last I read we will reach singularity by 2040. And I don't think VR has as much potential as AR. I am not convinced that we are so far off from fusion power either. Also we cannot predict the future climate even 1 week ahead beyond broad strokes. We don't know what it will be like in 100 years.

    I think he got the exponential growth of technology a little bit wrong. We went from airplane to moonlanding in about 65 years, but according to this video it then took us hundreds of years to get from the laptops we have now, to A.I.
    Plus, also according to this video, in that time before the "Holm" we never colonized other planets. Apparently we did it afterwards. Which is interesting, but probably not how it would play out.

  • @recrystal
    @recrystal 8 років тому

    I think this is a too "linear" prediction, I think (and hope!) that convenient controlled fusion reaction will happen much earlier. You are not even considering AI life spreading and evolving much faster than humans at some point in the future, and going to unpredictable ways that are probably not understandable for us right now. Furthermore, I think that global warming won't be an issue for long time, we will probably figure it out how to stop it and maybe reverse it.
    I agree about post-humans uploaded in a virtual world but this leads us to the fundamental question: are we already living in a simulated universe? I believe that whatever will expect us in the future will be much more crazy and mind blowing that we can ever imagine with our still limited minds.
