Nathaniel is so right when he said that your relationships and experiences will be richer for knowing the language. I’m a French teacher and I tell my students that there are certain concepts that are better explained in French than in English. You can connect with the people and their way of living so much better. Congratulations on your achievement!
I really love how you kept the part of how vulnerable and frustrated you felt before your exams. It truly shows that no one is perfect. And with that said I would like to share my own experience. I'm a Swede, and found love in a frenchman. So I moved down to the French country side where no-one speaks even a word of English. And now 3 years later I am fluent and I got 2 jobs. I didn't go to school or anything but I learned because I had no other choice. I have a friend that is Spanish and a workcolluege that is Turkish that both struggle with talking French and they always asks me how it was possible for me to become fluent so fast because they feel so awkward and insecure when they try to speak. My biggest advice is to accept the fact that you not gonna speak perfectly when you do. You are gonna use the wrong words, the wrong order of words and the wrong pronunciations ALL.THE.TIME. And that is okay, most importantly is too accept it and try to do better next time. People can hear on my accent that I am not French so they already understand if I say something the wrong way, and even if I don't have say something 100% correctly, who cares if they understood what I tried to say? That's the most important thing, if people understood what you wanted to say, then that is all that matters. The details comes later 😊

I can never comprehend how you can move somewhere and not learn the language as an immigrant myself. The difference is that when you're not a "western expat' but just a poor immigrant you don't usually get a choice. It's nice seeing someone showing the actual hardships of what actually living abroad is.

@Energy&Healing I agree with you. I'm American and speak English but we were forced to learn Spanish in school despite English being our native language. If we can learn everybody else's languages, they can at least learn ours and it's free to learn here.
Loved they way you have showed the whole process. Being able to record through those raw emotional movements must have been challenging. Congrats on passing the test! Please make more videos, love watching them. :)
@@mariadebake5483 It's actually far more arrogant for Dutch people to demand people learn Dutch after the Netherlands colonized huge swaths of our planet and imposed their language on hundreds of thousands. The irony is almost too much.
@@theaccount4841 If you plan on staying in a country for a longer time, you should feel motivated to learn its language instead of expecting its people to speak your language!
As a native Belgian that speaks Dutch (Flemish), I must say that your speaking abilities are AMAZING! I went through the same stages learning British as I moved to Liverpool for an exchange program. I struggled a LOT with the language in the first days, but once I only spoke English during the day, my language proficiency went uphill! As a Dutch and English language teacher, I loved the fact that you made this kind of video. It really shows the importance of a language. Have a lot of fun with learning Dutch, it's a very fun language!
YES!!!! The exchange is what matters!! I've been learning Chinese for a loooong time (10yrs) and when I let go of how I felt and just focused on being understood/understanding with what I know I was able to communicate with anyone. It would take time but people appreciate the effort and the care it shows when you try to communicate in their language. It opened my world and I can't wait to get back to my second home! This video is so real with those emotions and the highs and lows of language learning...took me back for sure! (Who are we kidding...I'm still there!) I feel like it's a humbling experience that can only add to your life. So amazing the support you had! It makes ALL the difference! Keep up the amazing work!
I’m feeling this way as well when it comes to Arabic. I feel this is my sign to keep going. Thank you for being so raw and open about your whole process, it’s inspiring and congrats on passing everything.
An idea for submerging yourself in language: put on the radio (preferably the talk/news radio station) and try to folow. This really helps, because it is so fast. It helped me tremendously in France, when learning to speak (and listen to) french. Good luck, and keep up the work you've already done!
I personally hate listening to the Icelandic radio talk shows. I can hold a conversation and understand pretty much in Icelandic but when it comes to the radio.... I'm lost and frustrated 😁
Oh dear Sadia. Watching this beautiful video made ma cry every time you walked out of that building with a smile on your face. I know the exact feeling. I've been living in Australia for the past 10 years and the requirement for each visa application was to sit that language competency test. In English, it's pretty much the same structure; consisting of speaking, reading, writing and listening. Oh boi, it is an understatement to say the test is nerve-wracking! Even tough my English is quite proficient, sitting the test made me feel incompetent. Watching your video made me feel so happy! Knowing that I'm not the only one who felt this way prior the test is comforting! Groeten van Perth, WA!!
I love how authentic you are in all of your videos, but this one especially! Showing the struggle and all those embarrassing, frustrating moments of learning a language was really ‘real’ - very different from the romanticized language learning videos we are used to seeing. Thank you for this!
That hit me so hard when she started crying. It happens to me a lot too. I get so frustrated learning new languages and yet I continue. Nathaniel is my legit favorite UA-camr. So glad to see him here.

You're so lucky or powerful that you could create your English bubble. I came here 15 years ago NO ONE spoke English to me. I was working in Amsterdam, living 60km away. No one even bothered to understand my English. I gave myself a year to learn it or go home. I learnt it. 5 months later I bought a house and spoke only Dutch to everyone. They've corrected me and I became fluent in 2 years. I adore your support system, Robin, Kathleen and friends. Very grateful for that, not many of us is so fortunate. Chapeau you did very well on your exams! I love your PUL vids, I love this honest, vulnerable one much much more. Thank YOU, Sadia ❤️
This was a really provocative account of an experience that many of us have lived through in different ways. Really inspiring story facing a significant climb that ended up being an important step. I hope this experience brought you and Robin closer and that you will follow this up with another video a few months out that reflects on how things changed for the two of you because of your experience. Keep going, Sadia. My wife and I are continually inspired by your journey.
I’m sat here crying because I feel so proud of you 😂❤️ Also I think this hits home pretty hard because I have a boyfriend that moved from England to live with me in Sweden and he is trying so hard to learn Swedish and it’s beautiful to see someone trying to embrace your culture as their own, as I’m sure Robin feels about you too! Thank you for sharing this video and for showing your vounarability and struggle, it only makes you human! ❤️
i am living in mexico learning spanish now. and i really related to and felt all of this. i got here to mexico in the middle of everything with covid, and i have been in class after class and learned a lot about the structure but i haven’t had a ton of opportunities to just sit and have conversations and when i did get the opportunity the embarrassment of doing it was overwhelming. i know how to communicate i know how to talk and express myself, just not in this language. It makes you feel like a toddler. but i wouldn’t trade the experience. what i really love about it too is the compassion i now have for people who are not native english speakers and who are trying to speak and learn the language.
I know learning a language isn't easy 1years back I couldn't even speak English language but now I speak fluently with accent now I communicate with American, British, all over the world this language change my life ❤️❤️

Really great you went for it. Thank you for sharing your courage:-)
Yay! You did it. I love learning new languages. I just started learning Dutch in Duolingo for the first time like an hour earlier. And now I got the notification of this video. What a coincidence! It's cool to see Nathaniel in your video too. I've watched the videos of him having conversations with his grandmother multiple times and I'm always so impressed.
the german bees say zoom zoom (summ summ) too 😂 you should really keep up the learning, your pronounciation sounds great! even though the dutch speak english so well every language is an investment in yourself, you will notice your personality is a bit different in every language and also you will be able to pick up new languages much faster in the future
My brother-in-law is Colombian and he and my brother live in my homecountry of Belgium. His Dutch improved the most when he spent more time with my family, because my dad does not speak English and my mom isn't great at it either. We make a concious effort to speak to him in Dutch first, then repeat in English when he doesn't understand. Ask your friends and Robin's family to do the same! I also really like the idea of a "no-English day". Stick with it, and you'll be happy with the results!
Dutch is quite a diffy language but I love it. I love the phonetics, the accent etc. For five to six years my Dutch friend teaches me the basics and I , teach him Greek, another difficult language. We're slowly getting there after many years considering we are in our 60's lol. Good luck Samia, goedenavong xx
I live in The Netherlands now, and I really hope one day randomly running into Sadya. haha, you are wonderful. and your video has just inspired me to do the impossible
I have learned Dutch through music and talking to kids. I even read children’s books at the start. I took the nt2 II exam with just learning it by myself. Yes, immerse yourself and don’t be afraid to speak it in public because you will learn a lot more. Gefeliciteerd!

Thank you for sharing also the downsides if this journey. I've recently reached level C1 of German after two years and a half of courses. It was a very intense journey
Wow C1! That's incredible! For these exams luckily we only needed to the end of A2, so nothing too complex. You should be proud, from everything I've heard German is incredibly complex 🤓
So proud of you! You made incredible progress in these few days and even without prior experience learning a language. I'm in Paris right now for three days (I'm dutch myself) and you're motivating me to keep practicing french. I've already challenged myself to speak French as much as possible but it's been giving me a lot of anxiety and some awkward moments, but I think in the end nobody cares and everybody is happy you're learning their language. Also, best collab ever!!
Oh my goodness, Sadia crying about feeling stupid to her partner sums up the first few months of my time moving to France with my partner 😂 Great video- learning a language is one of the most humbling and worthwhile experiences I have had in my life ❤️
Oh mine! You go girl. Got subscribed to you cos my endless love to plants, and didn’t even know you live in my favorite country so far. The supportive atmosphere you’ve got there is amazing. I wish I had the same with Estonian. The discomfort of looking like a fool is always there when speaking a foreign language. Good news: your mind has plasticity to adjust and figure out the things you haven’t learnt yet. Another good news: it gets better (with every new language or with every step in your current one). Bad news: it’s always there. Another good news: you can not let it stop you ✊🏻🌿
What a neat story from a fellow Canadian! Thank you for sharing your journey. I loved hearing Dutch speak and I think there is so much value in learning new languages.
Hey Sadia! I’m Dutch myself and it’s so funny when you speak Dutch, you sound very friendly and kind hahaha I speak Dutch and English fluently and I’ve been learning French for about 5 years and i totally get you because i still find it so uncomfortable to talk in French. Maar ja, ik wens je veel succes in de toekomst en ik hoop dat je ooit helemaal vloeiend Nederlands kan spreken!
Learning a new language will enable you to respect those who speak your language as second language speakers. Many people take their own language for granted for example English, but they're afraid to pick up another language because they do not want to sound foreign to other people who speak the language they want to learn. Props to you to take a leap!
You were a complete perfectionist and controlfreak, but then you got the understanding to go back to be a baby, learn basics, get a family and love and care around you and now look at you beautiful...you make my country so beautiful, ingeburgerde mevrouw. LOVED this video!! It was great to see you less scripted and being vulnerable. I of course love your other videos too but this seemed like a glimpse into your actual personality and was more relatable. Thanks for sharing and great job!! 👏🏼
My heart broke when Sadia was crying and saying that she felt stupid in Dutch, because I have similiar break downs everytime I meet my German boyfriends parents. They don't really speak English and every single time we visit I just sit quietly at the dinner table and try to follow their conversation until I'm totally exhausted. I haven't been able to bond with them and I just feel like it's my fault. At least they stopped saying that in a few years I'll be almost fluent (we've been together 4 years haha). Learning languages is hard and I wish people would understand that the advice to "just speak and learn from your mistakes" is not really helpful for everyone.
I am Dutch and if what you learned is actually mostly just from these few days I gotta say, it is actually really incredible what you pulled off!! "Gefeliciteerd met de uitslagen" 😁

@@MCaraPlays it’s HelloTalk
5 years without speaking Dutch when living there is like what most people judge in all the refugees coming to Germany often not learning German
yeah but the difference is she isn't a refugee..
I can never comprehend how you can move somewhere and not learn the language as an immigrant myself. The difference is that when you're not a "western expat' but just a poor immigrant you don't usually get a choice. It's nice seeing someone showing the actual hardships of what actually living abroad is.
@@TetiH it’s always difficult to learn a new language, yet part of the process when living abroad
@@energyhealing11 yeah but it sounds like you are shaming refugees as if they even have a good education foundation prior to coming. Which enables them to learn the language.
I just love how supportive your man is.
“who needs this language anyway, every Dutch person speaks English” 🤣🤣🤣
Says every Dutch person, always hahaha
@@suusvooijs6866 Foreigners often say this. It's a terriby arrogant attitude
@@mariadebake5483 It's actually far more arrogant for Dutch people to demand people learn Dutch after the Netherlands colonized huge swaths of our planet and imposed their language on hundreds of thousands. The irony is almost too much.
@@theaccount4841 Be happy with that opinion then. Good day to you
@@theaccount4841 If you plan on staying in a country for a longer time, you should feel motivated to learn its language instead of expecting its people to speak your language!
✌
"Who needs this language anyway " i screem it every time i do german exercises
Einfach machen! Du packst das!
Verständlich, aber alles wird gut! 😆
Haha einverstanden. Du schaffst das!
@@cocococonut8650did you mean to say ‘Agreed! You can do it!’ Then einverstanden doesn’t work here. You could say ‘ich stimme zu‘ ;)
@@xiakexin yes exactly haha Dankeschön!
OMG! Arabic is so difficult! What is your mother tong?
You should learn Egyptian arabic dialect
An idea for submerging yourself in language: put on the radio (preferably the talk/news radio station) and try to folow. This really helps, because it is so fast. It helped me tremendously in France, when learning to speak (and listen to) french. Good luck, and keep up the work you've already done!
I personally hate listening to the Icelandic radio talk shows. I can hold a conversation and understand pretty much in Icelandic but when it comes to the radio.... I'm lost and frustrated 😁
Picking up Dutch may not be as easy as picking up limes, but as a dutchie myself I really think you did a great job, gefeliciteerd!
Lol underrated comment
I love this type of real week in the life style vlog from your channel!!!!

That’s amazing! Never easy to learn a language, especially under that tight of a deadline!!! Félicitations 🥳
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader
I LOVE these kind of videos, I’m sooo up for this
This was a really provocative account of an experience that many of us have lived through in different ways.
I know learning a language isn't easy 1years back I couldn't even speak English language but now I speak fluently with accent now I communicate with American, British, all over the world this language change my life ❤️❤️
what is your native language?
Assamese
Yay🤙🏻
Can you tell me how you've learnt with "American accent"
Any tips??@failures union of comedy kings
@@anita6499 I had a lot of conversation with American teachers
I’m also learning Dutch living in Amsterdam, I could totally relate to what you were going through- yes it makes me feel stupid not to be able to express what I want and it’s been a very slow process for me to learn this language..but people here are so generous, patient and understanding-With this video, you kicked my bud!
Love the realness of this video and the depth of Robin's support and encouragement,
Everyone learning a language needs a partner like Robin for sure .. you gays are adorable
the german bees say zoom zoom (summ summ) too 😂 you should really keep up the learning, your pronounciation sounds great! even though the dutch speak english so well every language is an investment in yourself, you will notice your personality is a bit different in every language and also you will be able to pick up new languages much faster in the future
Beautifully said, Regina, thank you for this 🙏
My brother-in-law is Colombian and he and my brother live in my homecountry of Belgium.
The movement when Sadia cry 🥺🥺 !! I also feels like crying 😭😭😭
Canadian girl shoots the lights out! Of course! Wild applause from the sunny, warm Okanagan!
I live in The Netherlands now, and I really hope one day randomly running into Sadya. haha, you are wonderful. and your video has just inspired me to do the impossible
This video was so stunning on all levels ❤️ Thanks for the vulnerability, truth and humour, and congratulations!!
I have learned Dutch through music and talking to kids. I even read children’s books at the start. I took the nt2 II exam with just learning it by myself. Yes, immerse yourself and don’t be afraid to speak it in public because you will learn a lot more. Gefeliciteerd!
Thank you for so honesty sharing behind the scene. Sada as always is so nice to watch her energy that she spread arround her fantastic and Robin well they make perfect pair. Such a uplifting video
Oh my goodness, Sadia crying about feeling stupid to her partner sums up the first few months of my time moving to France with my partner 😂
Great video- learning a language is one of the most humbling and worthwhile experiences I have had in my life ❤️
Sadia always seems to have it all together and perfect. I couldn't even ever imagine her crying!
I'm a few minutes in, but OMG THE EDITING is already insanely perfect.
Hey Sadia! I’m Dutch myself and it’s so funny when you speak Dutch, you sound very friendly and kind hahaha
I speak Dutch and English fluently and I’ve been learning French for about 5 years and i totally get you because i still find it so uncomfortable to talk in French. Maar ja, ik wens je veel succes in de toekomst en ik hoop dat je ooit helemaal vloeiend Nederlands kan spreken!
Het lijkt wel een beetje Vlaams vind je niet? Inderdaad echt heel mooi en lief
Dank u wel voor uw overhéérlijke receptenvideos ❤️
Thank you for your vulnerability. As someone who is learning a second language, it is nice to see that I am not alone.
Trust me any foreign language learner can relate to the situation.
Love from India...❤️
I know this feeling! My husband always smile when I watch your videos because I said once that my goal is to speak English as beautifully you do. ❤
Found your channel looking for nutrition content since I was an undergrad nutrition student back then, and you became my inspiration to improve my English. Easily one of my fav videos of this channel. Congrats! 👏
As a person speaking 5 languages, I feel your pain. It's all about the brain elasticity.
CONGRATS! I'm so happy for you. 💙
10:51 🥺🥺💜 Robin and You are so beautiful together 😩
Learning languages is hard and I wish people would understand that the advice to "just speak and learn from your mistakes" is not really helpful for everyone.
me too!! But then in Danish. I have EXACTLY this experience
Love you and your videos, you inspired me to the point of creating my own channel, keep up the good work from Iran ❤
I am Dutch and if what you learned is actually mostly just from these few days I gotta say, it is actually really incredible what you pulled off!! "Gefeliciteerd met de uitslagen" 😁
Your house is BEAUTIFUL 🥰 love that I don’t feel alone when it comes to not learning quickly enough. I need to learn Português before I go in December :)
Boa sorte! ;)
Do you know Duolingo? It definitely helped me with learning more Spanish vocabulary!
Thanks for introducing us to Nathaniel.
Would LOVE to see more vlog content from you, too!
My most favourite video of PUL!! We would love to see this side of you!!! Raw & Natural ❤️❤️❤️
Ok seeing you crying made me cry 😰 soo proud of you 🎉🎉🎉
Well that was really good to know the other side of yours 😊👌. Really... Keep posting like this 👍
