- Ronnie James Dio as Froggy sings at the Butterfly Ball. Original promo cartoon based on Alan Aldridge drawings. It's a pity that there's no clip like this one for the others tracks.
This was so good, that it even made it through the Iron Curtain on occupied Georgia's 1st TV channel in 80ies. Imagine how blown my mind was - a combination of cartoon, Dio's voice (even though I was told by my uncle it was Roger Glover, for some reason) and sudden change from rock music to violins was not something we, Soviet kids, were used to.
The project was actually Roger Glover's project (which is probably what your uncle was eluding to). Roger Glover produced the music and recruited amazing musicians to perform the songs (Ronnie James Dio, Glenn Hughes, David Coverfield, etc.). This was such a unique, amazing album!
RJD has been my favorite vocalist for a LOOONNGGG time, and I never knew he did this. Thank you, Bruce Dickinson, for mentioning this in an interview!
Same! Thank you Mr. Maiden for blowing my mind when I thought I've already heard it all from Dio. Amazing!
Same !!
Same, needed to see this, i was 12ish when i saw Dio first time live
Ronnie AND the red caps
FUCKIN AY!! Thx Brucey!
This was the gap filler on the ABC in the 80's between Monkey Magic and Astroboy, love it so much and takes 30 years off me...;)
Me too. Do you remember the other songs used in the same way on the ABC? I remember Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, The Romantics - What I like about you. There were others I think
@@scottimc72 in the 80's ABC rotated this during kids tv hour with Several Mike Oldfield songs including: Portsmouth, Incantations pt 4, also Fleetwood Mac: Tusk.
Yep, loved those days.
Wow. I remember loving this as a little kid watching it as it came up randomly on the ABC.
Omg saaaaaame!!! I thought I'd been imagining it for years! Tried searching for it - but I thought it wasThe Beetles , all you need is love.
I've asked so many people lol, no one ever knew what I was on about. Thank you 😀 ❤🙏🙆🏼♀️🦊🐸🐛🦋🍄
Me too, Awesome years for growing up.
Same!!! It seemed to be the go to gap filer between programs, especially in the afternoon. So so so good!
Same. As a little kid I thought this was cool. Turns out I’ve been a Dio fan since 3yo!
Me too !!!
I just heard about this and it. Is. AMAZING! RIP Dio.
I really enjoy watching your reactions and learning about voices! Thank you.
Lol, was just looking this up to recommend it to you and your'e already top comment. Fair play. :D
Lizzie- I'm here bc of your interview with Arjen Lucassen mentioning this song. I love Dio and I've never heard this before!
thanks Bruce for this
haha same here mate
I thought he said Dio "Butterball" and found this. Tops.
The irreplaceable, wonderful voice of the late, great Ronnie James Dio. RIP, brother.
Dio's voice is all.
I remember tripping on magic-mushrooms in 1980 and seeing this by chance on TV. It blew my mind. 41 years later, now, I see it again and the whole trip floods back!
Lucky you!
Could say you were tripping balls
Really???🤔🙄
My god... F***ing Ronnie James Dio was blessed with an unbelievable voice. Nailing high notes with depth underneath them. Only the top dogs can do that. What a gift.
🌞\m/💝
I'm lost for words, this is so delightful in so many different ways and of course Ronnie James Dio's voice, power, range, texture and tone is incomparable.!!!

I'm 47. This clip would play during commercial breaks from pinwheel on nickelodian. I thought i fever dreamed this frog singing with a guitar and searched for years to find it. Thank to the internet I finally found it and was absolutely blown away to find the singer was ronnie james dio. I thought it was a mix and not really him, but it was. Now this has more meaning to me, not only as childhood nostalgia, but the fact that Dio is one of my favs.
If you were a Australian kid in the early 80s who watched the ABC for Cartoons this song and video was played everyday for years ! I grew up to be a HUGE metal head and I had no idea Ronnie James Dio sang this song , I just remember as a kid thinking " Wow , that frog can sing ! ".
Same, until I saw him interviewed on Sounds in 1986 the day he played in Sydney (which I went to) and Donnie Sutherland revealed this fact. I was absolutely gobsmacked.
I used to see it on the Great Space Coaster & Pinwheel. Kermit must be green with envy.
I remember my Grade 6 teacher playing it on our dodgy classroom TV in 1980, and it has stayed with me ever since. I was 12.
I am 46 and I saw this as a kid on Nickelodeon (I think?) Many, many years later (I think it was the 2000s) I had it in my head but could never find it. Years past, then I finally found it. Now I will never forget that it is "Butterfly's Ball" and just searched for it... thanks for the copy.
Dio's voice, man...
A song we can all sing to. Such an uplifting tune. Been a favorite of my family's for years. I love Ronnie's powerful voice as it cuts thru!
I never knew I needed Dio animated as a frog in my life 😂
I can vividly remember being 10 years old in the early 70's and this would come on telly between afternoon programs. Loved it then and love it now...!
I caught this cartoon on USA's NIGHT FLIGHT program way back in the late 1980s and for the longest time I was never able to find out who sang and was the voice of the guitar-playing frog. That is, until I heard the very same song in 2021 in a new Cartier commercial! And a few clicks later the name the song is "Love Is All", sung by the late Ronnie James Dio (RIP) and co-written by Deep Purple bass player Roger Glove, along with Ronnie James Dio and Tim Hardin. And the name of the cartoon is THE BUTTERFLY'S BALL. Outstanding!!!!!!
Glover
Thank you Bruce for bringing Froggys Song to the attention of younger maiden fans…these are truly hidden gems….by the late great RjD. Love is all….
They used to play this on TV all the time when I was a kid!
Took me ages to find this song. It used to play in my head sometimes. It used to be a fill in song between shows on the ABC when I was a kid. Ah the good ole days.
Thanks Bruce, I never knew this existed! I have always loved Ronnie! RIP
There was a ‘video’ show on TVO (TV Ontario) in Canada in the 70’s and I think it was called LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED. This song and video were used as the opening credits. This program played pre-MTV film promo clips of bands and I was a Kiss-obsessed kid who watched it religiously, to see the videos for CMON AND LOVE ME and ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT. I’m talking 1977-78. And I just learned today, in 2023, that Dio sang this song…and that it was written and produced by Roger Glover. Mind blown.
~And then there is the Black Magick SS Mystery version of this~
FKN LOVE the animation and of course the vocalist x
How could anyone forget this beauty its a true classic unlike some of which gets labelled as classics.
this used to play on the ABC from recollection in the 80's (and perhaps 70's as well.) like an ad break.
Yep. I remember it too
Thanks Bruce that is a song I never heard from DIO ☺️
Love is all - my youth indeed. the whole concept album was on rotation whilst studying for uni, so lovely to hear it agai. Must dig out my vinyls it may stll be there.
It's a mystery, A GODDAMN MYSTERY.
,,,, this song is much more uplifting with a great voice of Ronnie then some other crap on radio today,,,,,
Saw this on Nickelodeon as a kid in the early 80's. RJD. Just amazing
This video is a whole collection of rainbows in the dark.
Such a great song and video - haven't seen that for decades 🙂
THIS is AN Excellent MARKED IMPROVEMENT.. WELL DONE.. GOOD EFFORT
Dio, the best singer of the universe
Besides the Real One - the Absolute. The One whose Note upholds the Universe into manifestation. Beside THAT One, Dio is the best, no question... :-)
A great childhood memory watching the ABC in the early 1980's in Australia then I spent half my adult life searching for it.
I came from Bruce Dickinson interview, this is amazing. Now yo listen Ronnie dio AND the red caps
This is the first song I remember as a very young child, I absolutely loved it then and still do, I’ve had it on my playlist for years. Every now and then I watch it here ❤
Oh man! Ronnie singing flower power music? Just imagine if he were in the Beatles! I absolutely adore Ronnie, and I thought I had heard all of his stuff, including the late 50's early 60's stuff, with Ronnie and the Red Caps, Prophets etc. This is a rea, all be it strange, but excellent treat to hear! Rock and Roll Heaven!🤘😝🤘
Omg, this is a dream like memory from childhood that I'd forgotten.
So I was reading a post on Facebook about the documentary Dio: Dreamers Never Die, and someone mentioned The Butterfly Ball. After some research, I found this vid. I can see why everyone here has fond memories of this whereas I just learned of its existence.
Nice animation too.
I haven't heard this in forever...Long Live Ronnie James Dio!! 😎🤘🦋✌
OMG! This is Dio!!! I'm going to pass out!!!!!
Who wrote this
@@romy4858 If you mean the song, it was co-written by Roger Glover (Deep Purple), Ronnie Dio & Tim Hardin. Most of the songs on the rest of the album were written by Roger Glover & feature pretty much the cream of 70s British rock players. Eddie Jobson of Roxy Music plays that violin solo...
@@justinbrandis700 Wow. Thank you so much for that.
9 yrs old back then. Thanks old mate for your guidance, an more to the future with the talent of many. YOU KEEP MY HEART ALIVE. Living on.
All those years ago...I remember this would come on during the daytime ads in the late 70's-early 80's. I can only listen to it once for now, cos I'm welling up. Silly..but.
This song has sprung into my mind every few years so I was driven to look it up now. Here it is preserved perfectly.
Wow, as an 8 year old, it was freaky. As a 48 year old, it washes over me as if I am a 8 years old.
Indeed Peter, watery eyes for sure brother.
@@ohm1945 Just reading you reply nearly set me off! lol In these uncertain times we can gain strength from these golden memories, and somehow move forward with great hope.
Omg! Childhood memories come flooding back!
The song was written by Roger Glover from Deep purple
Nostalgia overwhelms me .
Never knew of this til RJDs book. This is awesome! To think I may have watched / heard this as a kid blows my mind. Reminds me of an animated show featuring Heart that I do distinctly remember.
Been looking for the name of this for ages - finally found it
The voice! Great song.
Yes, indeed, a pity that there's no clip like this for the other tracks. But bear in mind the cost of making an animated short in the 1970s. However, that should not stop CGI videos for the other tracks being made in the 2020s.
Wonderfuly Delightfuly Resplendent
MAGNIFICENT :-)
Fantastic!
Love is all you need - what a statement of fact! Let’s give it a shot.
L&P,
JaneR
I first saw this on a VHS tape compilation of animation that I rented from Blockbuster Video back in the '80s.
We had it in the UK wen i was a kid in the 70s, like a stocking filler, they usually showed it in the school holidays ! Yrs later I had the great pleasure of seeing Ronnie, twice with Dio n once on the Heaven and Hell tour, but he never sang it tho 😉 Such a big voice from such a humble man, sadly missed RIP Ronnie
Tbph. An Outstanding & Liberating Hit.🏞️💖🌌
They indeed paid homage to "love is all" : same lyrics theme, same rich orchestration with classic-like part, similar ending... They claim this inspiration.
Every time I hear this (or watch the animation) I'm suddenly a kid, transfixed as this was played almost every single afternoon on ABC TV in Australia for years. Time travel is real and this is a key.
Anyway, Roger Glover wrote The Butterfly Ball as part of a concept album. Ronnie James Dio sang. Everything in this is weird, magical and naive and yet perfect.
And he doesn’t mention Rainbows, Thunder, or Children!
😆
To be fair, meh didnt write it either…Roger Glover did. That said, if RJD HAD of co-wrote it, you KNOW that Butterfly Ball would be over a rainbow!
All you need is love and understanding
I never knew Ronnie James Dio was involved with something like this. RIP RJD.
Back when Nickelodeon was first starting out, they had a show on the week days, morning. Kind of an alternative sesame Street. But whereas sesame St was on maybe two days a week, an hour each pinwheel was on five days a week, five hours a day. One of the segments was this. Never knew until yrs later that that was Ronnie James Dio.
This takes me way back! This single was played loads on UK radio but failed to chart
I'm so old that i forget how old i was when i first heard this song but i have never forgotten it😊
Makes you feel happy ❤
I remember this grom years ago, Ronny, great vocals. Rip
This video was used for a music video show in the 70's called "Pop.Rock and Soul"
Love it
That frog has an amazing voice.
Thank you Bruce Dickinson!
A kid who adored this on random abc tv in the early 80s. I see clearly now how this was used to condition very young minds
Showtime network use to show this between movies when I was a kid.
I'm here dancing by myself 💕
Here you see the legendary singer Ronnie Frog Dio.
Ribbet James Dio
First time I heard RJD (pre Rainbow). Good find Roger Glover
How have I not heard about this?
Un titre qui laisse un plaisir immense.
his voice in this is amaizing
Freddy Mercury sounds like Dio sometimes.
I thought the same
I never put that together before, but I think you're on to it...
Metal AF 🤘
REMEMBER THIS ON ABC
Same
This is goofy as fuck but Ronnie sounds awesome
It's a good song
Roger Glover beautiful
RJD, to me the best rock singer that ever lived.

grapig man!
Love is all then there's a evil demon under your bed and you're gonna dieeeeeeee!!!!! RIP RJD
🤣🤣🤣
I first saw this on Nickelodeon's Pinwheel
I am number 300 for the likes👍😃
Bruce brought me here
So very, very, very, very reminiscent of Sergeant Pepper in sound and concept.
So much so that I spent the better part of forty years not realizing that it wasn't a Beatles song!
@@Ensign_Cthulhu : Always thought Sir Paul McCartney wrote it.
