    Just a suggestion from someone that uses Elderberry and Ginger for asthma. Cook in water approximately 30 minutes, then pour into colander to strain. When room temperature, add couple cups Raw honey to sweeten. Stir Stir Stir. Enjoy

    Awesome video, my wife and I pick elderberries here in California, amazing how many people are unaware of the use of elderberry. We freeze the berries in 1 gallon zip locks to make it easier to de-stem. Wife makes jelly and cobbler with them and I use them to make elderberry moonshine.

    I've known about elderberries for years but only discovered some growing locally in central Ontario. I'm experimenting with them this first year. I made what you described as juice with brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, ginger. I was going to add honey to make a syrup but I think I'll leave it as juice. In future, I'd like to try making gummies (jelly poured into candy molds, I think). Thank you for this video!

    Man, I've had elderberries I think only once in my whole life, and that was back in 6th Grade Camp during one of our hikes. I've always thought it was cool to be able to just pick something I can eat and eat it, like wild blackberries while white water rafting, or something like that. I STILL miss being able to go up to a stream and just cup and drink the water right from there, something else I've only done once! I like that tip about drinking a few ounces a day as a first defense kind of thing.
    We have Elliot's here in Sacramento where I can buy different extracts to add to water and I think they have elderberry, too. I'll have to go and buy some! Besides, if I can make my own jelly out of those extracts by using the pectin I bought at Green Acres, I could have a FIELD DAY with that!

    • @FlannelAcres

      Ah, yes, I think most of us are "wired" with the desire to eat and drink from the natural resources we are blessed with. It's a real treat. :-) I have seen elderberry concentrate from health food stores, but it can be pretty pricey. It still works well, though. I'm not sure what the cost comparison would be with dried elderberries, which can be purchased online, but it's worth checking into. Elderberry jelly is a great idea!

      Nonewhere Listens A smaller batch is a good idea. Not sure on fridge shelf life, maybe a week or two? Once we open a sealed jar, we try to use it up in that time. You could also freeze in an ice cube tray and take out as needed. It would keep for months (at least) in the freezer. :-)

    • @FlannelAcres

      Boiling it kills the bacteria, but it will only stay sterile and shelf stable if it's boiled in the jars, which seal as they cool. This way, it can be stored without refrigeration for months or years. Great question, thanks!

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  5 років тому

      The toxicity of elderberries depends on the variety. I believe the ones we have are American Elderberry, and we have used them in tea, pie, juice, etc without anyone becoming ill. I think in all of these cases, the berries have been cooked to at least boiling temp (210F or higher). I'm sorry if I'm not much help. I always thought the berries were harmless, but the stems poisonous. Please do some research to be sure of the variety you have and the safety of consumption. :-)

      Let's keep the 'Highlighted reply' going here; people need to SEE THIS! The white SUGAR you are using is the worst! Period! Rather than a juice why not a syrup? It's made with elderberries, purified water, and a quality raw unfiltered HONEY. Not SUGAR. It's so easy to make. Here I'll help with this very simple recipe.
      3/4 cup elderberries (dry)
      3 cups purified water
      Cook 45 minutes to 1 hour.
      strain berries by squeezing the juice and set aside to cool
      Add 3/4 cup HONEY and blend
      Place in refrigerator
      1 tblsp daily for maintenance
      2-3 tblsp daily if sick
      HONEY has far more benefits than what white table sugar ever will. Are you truly aware of just how bad white sugar is for us??? If you did, you would stay away from it. Some of the readers are using honey not sugar...they know better.
      Hope this finds you well.
      I'm DONE with this white sugar benefits you claim.

    • @FlannelAcres
      @FlannelAcres  4 роки тому +4

      @@pamelasue9252 I do agree that honey is better than white sugar, and I appreciate you sharing your recipe for those interested. A couple things for you to consider are that this juice I made was never intended to be consumed daily by the jarfull, rather by the tablespoon/ounce for a couple days to help fight a cold a couple times per year. It works for some people, and that small amount of sugar is not going to cause harm. Moderation is key. Thanks!
