From what I heard, there is a perfectly good reason why Daiei cast a caucasian child in the latter half of the series. AIP made a deal to help finance the movies in exchange for exclusive distribution rights for American television. The only stipulation was that there had to be a caucaisian child cast along with the Japanese child for all the movies. Because they thought kids would relate to an caucaisian child more or something. Which was BS as I watched shows like The Space Giants and Ultraman growing up with all Japanese casts and I had no problem relating to the kids in those shows.
War of the Monsters, the American cut of Gamera vs. Barugon, is 11 minutes shorter than the Japanese cut, and I think it's better for it. The pacing is a lot better. No matter which cut it is though, I love Gamera vs. Barugon, and it's easily my favorite one from the showa era.
Barugon and Viras are definitely my favorite films from the original series, Barugon being the best and Viras being the most fun. The 4 following films didn't live up to these at all, lmao. Somehow the Heisei trilogy managed to be the best Kaiju films ever though
I find it kinda odd that Gamera's 1st film is in black and white when it was around the time Toho had colorful Godzilla movies. I'm guessing Daiei had to copy the original Godzilla style to a T with the black and white. Edit: Fun fact, the actor in the Gamera suit is Teruo Aragaki, the same suit actor who portrayed monsters in the Ultraman series and Rodan in Destroy All Monsters.
I noticed that Gamera vs Viras started a tradition of pairing an American kid with a Japanese kid, and I always wondered how they shot them together. Did the American kids say their lines in English, and was dubbed over in Japanese and vice versa?
6:26 i mean it’s a good thing that shehio Tanaka directed the sequel because I think he didn’t like the idea that gamera was a good guy for no reason in the first film and he litterly turned this sequel into a serious film and make him(gamera) natural he’s not the friend of the children in this movie he just a natural kaiju on both sides and I love it I mean I love the first film but I don’t like the scenes with toshio because he’s annoying and had nothing to do with the plot about plan z he just doesn’t care about human rights and I wish he wasn’t in the movie at all.
The thing that gets me about Gamera is that he gets *mortally wounded* in almost every single one of his encounters, and yet he comes back over and over and over again. That last monster Viras plunges an enormous bomb-shaped b*tt-plug into his abdomen, stabbing him repeatedly, turning his eternal organs into mush, but he simply shakes it off and flies him up into the upper atmosphere where Viras freezes, as though he hoped that would happen all along. Gyaos shoots his beam repeatedly into Gamera's skull, turning his brain AND internal organs into mush, but that doesn't faze him much either. Even as a kid when I watched these I said, there is NO WAY any creature comes back after his vital organs have been shredded.
The showa movies are extremely boring, but I convinced myself to sit through them. I bought this collection that had every single movie of that damn turtle minus the 2005 one. I remember fading in and out of consciousness on jiger, guiron, and viras. God awful stuff. But man the heisei was great tho!
kinda pointless for the first film to end with Gamera being sent into space only for the second to have him immediately be broken out and back on Earth. Could have been interesting if Barugon caused so much destruction the humans went into space to get Gamera back and help them defeat Barugon
None of the cast are forgettable that's just one opinion of one person .because every time I see this movie I say to myself wow this is very nostalgic. Since Gamera is a poor mans. Godzilla they wanted the movie to be different from the king of the monsters Godzilla. This is why inn the opening you see the monster .They were competing against. Godzilla movies. Too And they did an okey job . At that. You have to understand what the film makers wanted to do with a movie .and the times.
The best way to actually enjoy watching Gamera movies is to watch them while Tom Servo, Crow, and Joel rip them to shreds. MST3K made movies like this watchable.
I want to see a gamera movie where him zigra, legion, and gyaos are friends and barugon is an enemy first then becomes gamera's friend later in the film. And i hope gyaos becomes a pterosaur instead of a bat. And guiron, viras, and jiger appear. And iris is the ultimate bad guy And gamera can't fly. And i hope the virisians dont appear and dont exist in that movie or universe. And i hope the monsters are as durable as the monsterverse titans
Next year will mark both the 50th anniversary of Goranger/Sentai and the 60th anniversary of the Gamera series. Also purple is a good color for the turtle. 👍🟣🎨🐢
1 and 2 are accteptable. The First is an ok Kaiju Flick for the Time. The Second is a great one. From Gyaos the Showa Series goes downhill fast. Some consider Gyaos as an ok Movie but the Kenny and Dumb and Dumber in this Movie are just too terrible to enjoy it. And Gamera is just nice now for NO FCK REASON.
i think vs viras made it go faster down hill than before until we got to space monster and it killed the franchise until we got the heisei that revived it
True the first two films are both masterpieces the rest of the sequels are tedious and shity and not worth watching Edit: I also loved gamera vs gyaos 1967
I personally think Gamera vs. Zigra was the worst and most boring Gamera film, it's no wonder you fell asleep during that one. Say what you will about Super Monster, but at least that one had a lot of monster battles in it. Still hate Super Monster too, but hate Zigra even more.
I think in my opinion all the later films from the Showa series from gyaos to super monster are the worst films ever made Edit: I changed my mind on gamera vs gyaos because it’s now one of my favorites in the Showa era but I didint changed my mind on the later films after vs gyaos like vs viras, vs guiron, vs jiger, vs zigra and super monster because all those films after vs gyaos are mediocre, boring and bullshit.
I thought that the reason was that the army got Barugon with artificial rain, which nullified his freezing vapor which was why he couldn't use it on Gamera a second time.
My 3 favorites are: 1. Gamera vs Monster X 2. Destroy All Planets 3. Attack of th Monsters 4. Return of the Giant Monster. Gaos 5. Gamera vs Baragon I really don’t like any of the others.
In the Japanese dub of Gamera Vs. Barugon, Barugon's weakness is stated to be FRESHwater, as opposed to water in general.
what is the diffrence
@@Algeriawindows69 Saltwater is safe for it.
Fresh isn't.
Same logic as if you put a saltwater fish in a freshwater tank. I guess?

Huge, the difference is fucking huge
Happy 55th anniversary gamera

I think the 90s trilogy are the only Gamera movies anyone should ever watch 🐢
Agreed, the second one is alright though
I like the earlier Gamera films. Some of them are pretty Hilarious.
And the 2006 one. That movie is pretty heartwarming
I love the design of Gamera and would like to see a new movie for him

True that movie is worth watching
Gamora vs virus was my first gamora movie and the impaling scene scarred me as a child
"Huge Swarm of Rats is a friend to children!"
Gamera vs. Barugon is my favorite film of the series mainly because it doesn't have any annoying kids.
Yep. No Kenny's
Great video and great reviews!
Barugon was one of my favorites. That is movie no 5 in my ranking
Barugon and Viras are definitely my favorite films from the original series, Barugon being the best and Viras being the most fun. The 4 following films didn't live up to these at all, lmao. Somehow the Heisei trilogy managed to be the best Kaiju films ever though
Gamera is that beast when it comes to fighting
I find it kinda odd that Gamera's 1st film is in black and white when it was around the time Toho had colorful Godzilla movies. I'm guessing Daiei had to copy the original Godzilla style to a T with the black and white.

Very late response, but I’m almost certain this would’ve been due to cost. Black and white film stock was way, way cheaper than colour at the time.
@@neonlightillusion ah ok
@@slendymann2647 Plus it was also probably done to disguise a number of the production’s shortcomings with the budget they have.

That background music was when he was talking about gamera vs gaos
Street fighter Blanka theme in background lol
I honestly like toshio, i can relate to him a lot.
And then there are the "Kennies" who make a good portion of the Showa Gamera movies unbearable to watch at times.
Which is also a percentage of why godzilla's revenge is a horrible movie
God bless Brandon
Great review.

I saw these films on MST3K
Correction Japan censors the shit out of blood

Because gamera is just that strong fr. It's not inconsistency he's just invincible.
Q: What would you be like if Gyoas exploded?

Great video.
Gamera vs. Barugon is the only Showa Gamera film that doesn't have children in it, and is more adult-based than the others save for Gamera.
Viruses weakness is freezing cold temperature why is he in space
I have always viewed Gamera as a cheaper alternative to Godzilla
except the heisei trilogy
the Gamera-Thon fan
*THE GAMER-A-THON ENJOYER*
You should do a Godzilla Marathon.
kinda pointless for the first film to end with Gamera being sent into space only for the second to have him immediately be broken out and back on Earth.

Gaos is my favorite.
" I like turtles."
Best meme ever lolol
In the original film, Gamera is basically a slightly more friendly Godzilla.
Gamers vs barragon is the first gamera movie ever watch to me
The best way to actually enjoy watching Gamera movies is to watch them while Tom Servo, Crow, and Joel rip them to shreds. MST3K made movies like this watchable.
They featured almost the entire Gamera Series on MST3K. Except for a couple of films.

Zigura what egg
Too bad they could have used pets now also they could have had gamera use his fire to counter narugon ice
Gamera vs gyaos is the best
Gamera saved me from the Gyoas!
The American actors in the American cut are a lot better than the ones in the Japanese cut, at least most of them.
