    I still remember her lines in The Simpsons. "I wasn't a freak, I was in the audio/visual club". The duality of that statement is hilarious. D'Arcy has always been an influence on my bass playing, despite not recording most of the first two albums, her live playing is epic.

      The Pumpkins are NOT the Smashing Pumpkins without her....Period. I wish there was some way to make peace with the past, but I think she has had to let that all go and move forward with her life. There is a time when the "return window" closes and you just can't go back no matter what.

      I'm also gonna go against GenXers comment here and say I'm glad social media wasn't a thing during her tenure. That would make things even worse. She doesn't need validation from us to know how much she brought to the table during her tenure with the band.

      @@majeliomontenegro1 don't think that describes grunge. Grunge was like baggy, utilitarian, some vintage 70s...it was sort of darker or more muted colored, flannel, sweaters...but it all sort of matched and appeared intentional. It was like the look of rainy fall days, which sort of was the mood of grunge.

    • @majeliomontenegro1
      @majeliomontenegro1 11 місяців тому +2

      @@ld2588 I was in my teens and early 20's in the heyday of the hair bands and in my mid 20's when the Seattle bands became big. I recall getting sick of the hair bands and thinking they were unimaginative, shallow and dumb as early as 1981 and 1982. The hair bands wrote safe, apolitical ballads, rock anthems and paeans to hedonism--sex, drugs and rock and roll. In interviews, they came across as unserious and dumb. They talked about their musical techniques and influences, if asked, but otherwise they talked about having sex and partying. Their personas and formula were getting old fast. Other than their fans, everyone was getting sick of them.
      Everything the alternative and grunge bands did, seemed to be a reaction against everything the hair bands did and stood for. Instead of wearing black leather or colorful spandex and having big, teased-up hair, they wore Doc Martens, jeans, flannel shirts or sweaters or thrift store clothes. Instead of using expensive Jackson or Charvel superstrats, they used cheap, junky guitars that they got from pawn shops. And instead of talking about sex and partying, they wrote serious, pessimistic songs and came off as humorless and politically correct in interviews.
      You don't need to tell me anything about the grunge era. I was from Cobain's generation. I was a grownup when those bands started taking off and I remember what it was like. When you say they wore vintage clothes from the 70's, that's what I meant when I said they wore clothes that they got from thrift stores--old clothes from the 70's that ended up in vintage and thrift stores because no one wanted them. The same with their Danelectro, Hagstrom and Guild guitars.

    It's so sad. She's so pretty, smart and talented. IT ALways seemed she had a "Daddy Issue" amongst other psych issues. Then, to have destiny land her with Corgan, was a double edged sword. It's not hard to see Corgans Ego and controlling nature. In all fairness to Corgan, he truly was the driving force which gifted, the "Smashing Pumpkins" to music fans round the globe. Then, adding rocket fuel "youth and success" to all that? Kaboom! As smart as they were/are. IDK,Hindsight is 20/20: It's too bad they didn't think of having group sessions with a psychologist, or something.

      Tbh, she was not a bystander to Billy and her input influenced the music, and you can tell which albums had no James and/or D’Arcy later. The sound is different. But well, also she and Billy had a weird relationship, we all know how Billy is but she wasn’t shy when it came back to saying stuff to him, to the point it seemed like she made him insecure about some things (at least in his perspective). I honestly feel like it’s better for them to be apart even if I’d love to see her back
