** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Ah! Sweet release! Actually, the only reason I wanted you to feature Singleton on the channel was that it was one of the first whiskies I tried and could afford, and wanted to hear some tasting notes from someone with a more refined palate so I would know what to look for. Revisiting the Dufftown 12 a couple of months ago I didn't find any more than you guys did, but thought hey, maybe there was some magical thing I wasn't seeing. My massive chub for the singleton is close to non-existent sadly, as I've quickly migrated to the smokier side of whisky, (my favourite being Lagavulin) and honestly, I had kind of forgotten about those comments I made, which, come to think of it were kind of excessive, quantity wise. Sorry about that! Cheers!
heheh, no worries. thanks for the reply! 👍
I would add a dank gif meme in here if I could
This was my second whisky! Right after Jack (I live 30 miles from Lynchburg).
Haven't tried the 18 yet, but I've had some non-Islay I loved, like the Highland Park 12 or Oban 14. Still, I'd have to agree with you.
My girlfriends dad introduced me to Singleton alongside Highland Park and I still have a soft spot for them. Having tried more expensive and exclusive Whisky, I still keep at least one bottle each at home, just because it is so nice to keep introducing people to Single Malt Whisky or heck, even Whisky in general. And nobody ever complained about the Singleton Dufftown 12yo. That's what I like about it, it's just such a good entry point to the Whisky-world!
Much love from Germany :)
Daniel, I know there's no Advent Calendar for January but you should continue making similar videos. I found them incredibly informative and fun.
I was gonna send you guys a bottle of this this weekend! I got it as a joke gift for my brother in law (my last name is Singleton) and recently got a bottle of 18 for myself. Honestly i really enjoy it, i mostly taste chocolate above anything else in it
I was gifted a bottle of this by my brother. I keep returning to it. Love it. Smooth stuff. I now am a Scotch woman. It's affordable (usually around 30 euros here) and better than Jack or Johnny who retail at similar prices here.
Similar story here, if in EU I would recommend trying their other releases. I've tried 'Spey Cascade' and 'Sunray' and loved both 😎
Hey gents! I'm a big whiskey fan who's now come across your channel and love it too! One recommendation I have to make is your pronunciation of "Dufftown". At 2:22, you pronounce it "Duff-town", which is absolutely how my wife and I pronounced it when we stayed there during a Scotch-tasting tour a few years back. I was quickly corrected by the locals and informed that it's actually pronounced "Duff-ton", Not to be nit-picky, but thought you might like to know. Cheers, fellas!
Would you say this is a good introduction to scotch single malts? I'm a beginner and just tried it 5 min ago. Loved it.
Picked up a bottle of Singleton 12 for $35 today! Purely on the bottle and packaging. Glad to see it reviewed, maybe I'd secretly seen this title in the queue and was tempted subconsciously
I have watched like 3 videos and now I have 400$ worth of whiskey. What the Hell just happened?
clinical_being you didn’t learn from Rex, that’s what happened. Gotta mooch.
But whenever a mooch is born, a Daniel rises somewhere - it's the great circle of life that keeps us all in balance with the water of life.
What happened? You have been reborn 😎
The exact same thing happened to me. I started watching like two weeks ago, and now I have like 12 bottles in my collection. (Price total for me: ~$520.) Not sure what happened or how it did, all I know is I don't regret it.
Don't worry, you'll be well over $1000 soon enough :D
That cigar lighter joke was so gooood!
Finally! The Talisker has been noticed!
You should also get those frosted bottles, you’ve featured one here before
I've got a bottle of the 18 chilling behind me and man do I love the stuff :D
I got one today, and after I made a glass of it, here I am looking for it on UA-cam,
Holy Smokes! What is that sweet scent coming off from Ardbeg 10 after blowing through the glass???
The Singleton of Glen Ord. You can purchase it at the distillery or in Asia. It's located near Inverness. It's amazing and I wish I would have purchased more.
You can achieve what you’re looking for using a bottle wrap. It would change the color of a clear bottle to any color that you wish. it is relatively inexpensive and can protect your bottles from UV rays. It also could add texture similar to what you see with Bullet Bourbon bottles, but in the cooler way. Just a thought.
I just found this channel. And I have to say... I think i have a new favourite channel!
Keep up the good work! You guys are funny, educational and have a great vibe together.
I subscribed and have a few hours of video to watch!
We're glad you're here!
Enjoying the channel so far! Looking forward to the next steps for you guys! I recently got myself some whiskey glasses and have grown my whisk(e)y collection by a multitude; Monkey Shoulder, Michter's Unblended, and have my eyes on a nice Islay in my future. Cheers to you both and all those who enjoy this helpful and entertaining channel.
If you want to try a nice single malt for budget price try the Loch Lomond single malt in the aerstone sea cast a little dearer but very yummy
Awesome ive been waiting for this one. Its simple but a great intro to speysides/highlands. Atleast to me.
I was curious about Singleton, because it's i guess most abundant single malt in Poland (even in some small shops). Unfortunately it's Dufftown
I love the singleton single malt scotch malt masters selection dufftown give that a try you won't be disappointed
Hey guys! Really interested in getting your thoughts on the Aultmore range from Dewars. Halfway through a bottle of their 12 year old and fallen in love with the stuff. Ok not the most challenging dram but a wonderfully crafted Speyside, worthy of scrutiny. Great channel by the way, I find myself dropping by whenever I have a spare half hour. Drink in hand and comparing tastings, there’s worst ways to spend dreary January evenings in South Wales! 🏴
YES!!!! Stealth dad joke! Rex was owned.
You're welcome.
Rex was soooooo not amused....
Deanston Virgin Oak is what I'm drinking and it's right behind Daniel, beckoning to be reviewed. Please?
could you review John Barr and has to be my new favorite blended whiskey
Daniel and Rex,
Love you guys and the channel! Knowing that you are both, dare I say, disciples of Ralfy and have loads of great whisky wisdom and recommendations to share with us all, your tastes in whisky are pretty damn reliable. I do admit that I probably liked this bottle of Scotch more than either of you did. HOWEVER, I don't think you were exposed to the REAL merit of this whisky, which is how well it pairs with some damn fine BBQ. Since you're at the epicenter of BBQ (Texas: Let the meat speak for itself), I think you both would actually appreciate Singleton 12 more if you poured yourselves a dram while tucking into some brisket, ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, etc. It's malty, honey and vanilla finish pairs quite succinctly with the smoke and sweet spice of Texan BBQ.
On that same note, I would not only love it if you both tried Singleton 12 again with some BBQ on your own time, but if you would consider doing a whisky and food pairing video once a month, somewhat a kin to your Rare Whisky Friday videos. This could also be a great plug for you guys recommending some of your favorite local restaurants from Austin and the surrounding area.
Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!
Went into my local total wine to get my first bottle of Highland Park 18 when I noticed the Dark Origins price slashed to 55$ and bought the two remaining bottles of that instead. Did I make the right call?
YES!
So after eating trail mix I have a bizarre question. When I ate a large amount of one specific nut or fruit I noticed some flavors disappear within the whiskey I was drinking. Does that therefore mean it could be a part of the whiskey's flavor profile? Or is it that regardless of profile certain foods are going to change your palette? Because in certain bourbons I definitely get a dried banana or apricot note.
It can be both!
Daniel,
When Scottish/Irish distilleries buy used American oak barrels from the US, do they specify toast and char for the barrel, what distillery it comes from, or anything else in regards to the barrel specifications?
I think that if big distilleries, such as Midleton, didn't have some sort of control or specifications in line in regards to the barrels they are buying that it would be EXTREMELY hard to get the exact flavor profile of their products. Blending seems like a huge headache of a task.
They do! In fact, they get so much into the control of it, that several Scottish distilleries actually own lumber companies, make the barrels themselves in the US, and lease them to bourbon distilleries before they bring them to Scotland.
I've heard this is a component of Johnnie blue? Is this true to your knowledge?
My favorite whiskey! Thanks for the review :)
Where do you locate so many unique whiskys? Here in PA, our state store selection is very limited and ordering from overseas is much too expensive to ship.
Luckily we have a great selection in Texas
Hi guys!!! normaly i drink 1 bottle per weekend and after try a couple of cask strenght single malts i found that jhonnie walker blue is very watery to my. am i a bad taster?!?
no, I have the same experience with most Johnnie Walker Blends
I am having trouble pricing this unopened bottle of Canadian Club from 1959 that I have. Any help?
Daniel, can you comment on the effects different storage materials have on whiskey? I'm trying to find a lightweight container that I can store whiskey in for backpacking, but I'm worried that putting alcohol in a plastic container will change the taste/give me cancer.
I've read that the nalgene flasks are pretty neutral, but I haven't had a chance to test the one I bought recently yet. I don't do backpacking, but I camp off a motorcycle, so the storage/space requirements are similar.
I have some glass 5 oz bottles that I use to give friends samples, and I've contemplated using a couple or 3 of those for a trip, but I can't think of a super safe way to pack them and be absolutely sure they won't get broken in the bag without taking up a huge amount of space.
Kevin nailed it!
Oh but a steel flask definitely does interact with the whiskey. Go glass lined or pewter (white metal) and your good to go.
Stainless steel reacts less with the alcohol than the tin alloy known as pewter. Glass is the best material to store alcohol, and plastic is the worst. I’ve always used a stainless steel flask to transport whiskies while camping and backpacking. I always empty the flask when I get back home and rinse and dry the flask out. I will not use polycarbonate anymore, even for water. The bisphenol hazard is too great even in BPA-free plastics. BPA-free plastics still contain bisphenol (bisphenol-F, etc) and that bisphenol is still leachable and a hazard. BPA-free is still a potential risk.
Here in singapore i do have a singleton of glen ord 12 years and i love it so much .
which country has the worst music,,sing--a-poor
You were right Rex...the sweet release for me was the cigar lighter!
65,000 subs! won't be long till you hit 100K!
S. Korea here. We used to get Glen Ord but now we only get Dufftown
You're welcome Rex. First dad joke read in a video for a while.
Just found out a friend is holding on to a bottle of glenfiddich snow phoenix.i was wondering if you have ever tried this
not yet!
Huzzah for the return of Dad Jokes!
I'm very new to these concepts! The only whiskey ive ever had was a bottle of original jack. That being said...it had a taste of alcoholic smokey charcoal pieces. Not that pleasant in my opinion...are they actually whiskeys that taste delicious??
Rabbit Hole Dareringer is liquid candy, aged in sherry wine casks. But it will run you $70. It is the tastiest bourbon I've had and a dessert bourbon in my book.
hey, Guys!
Those the cork does something? Is it fundamental for good whisky?
no, just tradition.
What of the 15 or 18yr?
Got to love those dad jokes, right?
Took me about as long as it took Rex to figure it out..
Ryan Whiskey Wine Dane lol a cigar lighter
Doesn't Rex get a whiskey of choice as price for a dad joke?
I have mooched gloriously today, oh great mooch king, but it came at a price.
Long story short, I just got paid and went to my local liquor store and had bought some Monkey Shoulder and Buffalo Trace to try with my roommate. I know the people who own the store well, having went to their store for years, and I was able to mooch from them a bottle of Compass Box Hedonism. However, this mooching was, in a way, in exchange for information to help them expand their whisk(e)y selection. Do I gain any mooch levels for this, and if so, how many?
Took me about 4 minutes to figure out that Cigar lighter joke :D
Wow, you're fast! I actually had to Google it :( ... found explanation on the Reddit. Shame on me! (well, english isn't my native language, so may be there is still a hope for me, after all)
The smelling is like the similar concept as Robert Patterson. From the Dalmore when you are smelling whiskey.
Have you guys ever had Danish Whisky?
One of my budget faves.
Dumb question but how do u send whiskey through the mail. Thought you can send alcohol in the mail. Or are people just sending and "empty" bottle
Gifts are legal to send as long as it's through UPS or FedEx:

Hey guys! Big fan, been binging old episodes since finding this channel. Long time booze drinker, only recently got into Scotch after a month in Scotland, with a major soft spot for big peaty Islays. I want to introduce my Dad into whisk(e)y, and not sure where to start. He's a huge red wine fan, specifically for big, full-bodied, spicy Cabs and Zins, not to so much subtle Pinot Noirs. Where should I start with him in the whisk(e)y world? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Gracias!
maybe Sherried scotch? Glendronach, Aberlour, etc
I don’t always tell dad jokes, but when I do, he laughs
The dad jokes #gotem
Why not do : top 10 interesting tastebud whisky? Challenging for advance drinkers? Also whats the difference between cognac and whiskey? Review any cognac?
You no longer cave in to repeated demands?!! How can you not appreciate the enormous effort that goes into daily commenting, its almost like a full time job. Furthermore, you've already set a precedent. So im sure the tribe shall not abide by this inconsistency. All foolishness aside. I love the show, even though you guys are responsible of the massive increase in my whiskey collection. Keep it up with the video's! Proost!
I started watching about a few weeks ago and have bought at least 2 bottles a week. I need help pls
Lol daniel totally read that comment about putting that talisker 10 out of its misery....
Hey Daniel. The other day I was with my friends drinking whisky and we had a discussion about scotch. Is it possible for a whisky to be called Scotch even if it was not made in Scotland? because I have seen some Indian whiskys print scotch on the labels. I did do some research which said that scotch is a whisky made using Scottish technique. Not necessarily distilled or made in Scotland. I may be wrong. So I would like you to enlighten me.
No it's not! And the SWA (Scottish Whisky Association). The SWA and Diageo have aggressively gone to war trying to shut down Indian malts from saying "scotch" or even having "scotch sounding distillery names". It's an ongoing thing.
As of yesterday, 5/2/18, it is on clearance for 5.99 and my local grocery store.
channel idea.
Solera bottles (at least a few so that you can split up peat and other dominate flavors) ! start some solar bottles with some leftovers each episode...or every now and then when you find something that you think would be good in one of the bottles add it. then every month or so you could try them.
When are you going to do famous grouse... Since it's the most popular whisky in Scotland you might have an opinion on it
I did naked grouse for the advent calendar. Love it. We'll do more later
Lol I didn't notice the extent of the accent in my comment haha guess it shows and yeah that makes sense but it would be cool to see the progression from start to finish but you must make a whiskey mixtape now that you made the phrase
Hi guys, I'm new to the channel, really enjoying it, always really loved whiskey which my friends find wierd at uni cuz I'm 18, I'm on quite a small budget but given saving can occasionally afford some whisky and make it last, I'm a kind of black coffee and olives guy and was wondering what your thoughts on best peaty/smoky whisky for the money, I've heard Laphroaig is good, but was wondering on black grouse ect.., I apologize if this question has already been answered and if someone could point me in the right direction, thanks
for the money and seriously smoky, definitely head to Laphroaig first
thanks
Finally! My house whisk
If ye don't succeed try, try again!
Got a present of a bottle of the Singleton from a Scotsman who was trying to get me to swing away a bit more from the Irish whiskey's. At first I hated it. By the time I got a 1/4 of the way through I was confused, couldn't decide if I liked it or not. By the time I was half way through I seriously loved it and got the deep fruity malty flavors - which brings be back to my initial comment ;)
I will explain the big deal with The Singleton 12 Glendullen... This whiskey blossoms in the bottle as you keep it. It's nothing too special until your bottle reaches
#CHADWEEK2018 One week to rule them all!
Whoa, Whoa, Whoa... did I just watch a review that only one bottle was brought out? That is inconceivable, especially since there was a blatant Dad joke and according to the Vault by-laws to wit: if a dad joke is uttered within the vault due to a reading by the humble and Magnificent Bastard Rex, he shall get to sample a Whiskey of his own choosing. Well done Hobbit the beatings of the Dad Jokes has finally crushed the spirits of our dear most sensitive mooch.
How about a ceramic bottle.
Templeton Rye video yet?
Can you use bottles from Canada?
As long as we can purchase them from a supplier, yes!
I URGE you to try the Benromach 15. it is unique and wonderful. really unique! I would send you a bottle if I could - but until I can afford it, please try and get it. You will not be sorry. I live on the other side of the world and I cannot get it here. I would need to travel to Scotland again. not that I mind... :) I will do - but until that time it would be LOVELY to reminisce watching you two Wonders having a dram. I had just discovered your channel and these days my favourite thing to do is sit in front of the computer screen, knitting, and watch your videos and pretend I can taste it with you. Slàinte!
Glad you're here!
Oh man, that joke killed rex
Funny how you guys didn't taste a whole lot but I found pepper vanilla slight honey and pear with my inexperienced pallet maybe you guys have burnt your taste buds off drinking so much barrel proof hahaha
This sounds like it might be similar to the now discontinued Scapa 16yo. Which I loved, but was a pain to get get since it wasn't distributed to the state I live in (ID). The closest thing I've found so far is Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt, which I love even more than the Scapa, but also isn't distributed here, . . . . hmmmmm, maybe I should just @#$%^&! move! . . .
The dad jokes are back hell yeah
Commenting all the damn time DOES work. Don’t make me tenacious again Som.
Not the most informative reviews but every time I watch another whiskey review I get bored after 30 seconds and stop watching. You guys are the Top Gear (Grand Tour) of whisky reviews!
They really dig that middle buldge.
This smells like Glenfiddich 12 for me. I'd probably mistake one for the other.
I love,it when you hate a whisky I hate, more than when you love a whiskey I love
That dad joke!!!!
Phuc ton of raisins is what I'm getting here boys
what happened to the "for every dad joke, Rex gets to pick a whiskey" rule?
shhhhhhh
I’m going to keep this short (like Daniel) and post my obligatory #Chadweek comment. Ps. Today’s episode...meh.. I’ve seen you guys do better. Still funny I’m just disappointed we only got one whisky, also dad joke and no penalty whiskey from the shelf. What’s going on Rex what kind of mooch are you?
tell rex, that if his hardon lasts for more than 4 hrs, he needs the doc.
i disagree with your grading ! its up there with lots of brand name single malt specially with the 12 years old and better than big names in this category , and its cheaper by at least by 30% by me it scores high .....
Master Mooch would you please not interrupt the Somm when he's trying to tell some wonderful facts about whisky.... They help me at my job at the bottle store. Just a request :)
So mesquite barrel finish for the sick and demented whisk(e)y you are making, or maybe use some old Islay scotch barrel finish ... also dad jokes are best jokes, one day the Master of Moochiness will learn that. #dadjokesforlife #cigarlighter
Ipa and project xxx
I prefer the NAS over the 12.
Singleton is my surname!
#chadweek
Thanks lol
No more Rex get pick for dad joke?
i had a bottle of this and tried it and pushed it to the back of my bar where it stayed for months.I repeated the process a few times and the only way i finished this bottle was to mix a five to one ratio of Laphroaig quarter cask to it .Then it was at least drinkable. BTW I really enjoy your reviews
If we send you our empty Talisker, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, etc bottles, can we get them returned filled with your whiskey? ;)
oh man, this would be awesome if it wasn't so illegal
Could you potentially sign them as souvenirs?
Rex, is this another 1 of your accounts? The Mooch has his schemes in place.
I might be encouraged to allow him to mooch my account... But I'm really too thirsty to think about it... /looks significantly at empty Glencairn
I'm sure I've seen someone more disgusted than Rex was after reading that DadJoke™, but it wasn't much more...
