    I've thought about this song a lot. I wonder how much of Odysseus' views of the gods was influenced by his relationship with Athena. Most mortals had no direct interaction with the gods. There was a reason they'd sacrifice to the gods. Then there's Odysseus, who had Athena as a mentor for much of his life. She never did him any harm & he saw her as a friend. She helped him so much. I just can't help but wonder how much of those interactions colored Odysseus' views. The gods were powerful beings & they were owed a lot of respect, yes, but they were never directly malicious or antagonistic in his life.

      Add on how Zeus warned him about what Astynax would become if he were allowed to grow up. Of course, he asked Odysseus to do something horrible to prevent it, but he offered a warning. Overall, the gods have looked out for Odysseus and helped him look out for those dear to him, so of course he'd ask another god for help. He has yet to see the most glaring example of a god wanting something bad to happen to him.

      Well, I'd argue that all the divine meddling in the Trojan War would count as being antagonistic to him, but afaik he never faces any direct opposition from the gods during the war, unlike Paris, Achilles, Hector, and more, so your point still stands, but he definitely saw comrades killed by Zeus' storms or Ares fighting in the crowd or Apollo guiding archers.

      Odysseus asked for a good word from Tyndareus so he could marry Penelope, in return Odysseus came up with a plan on how Helen's marriage could be protected. His solution was that all the suitors had to go kill whomever didn't respect the marriage. This led to the Trojan war because even though it had been a decade or so all suitors where still on the hook to defend Helen's marriage when Paris took her.

    Something I quite liked about how Odysseus handled this was he wasn't saying I don't want to hear your opinions and council he was saying if you want to talk about something then bring it back to me and then we'll talk about it instead of bringing it up in front of the entire crew and causing discourse
    Because disagreeing is fine when planning in a private button high tense situation like this the majority need a clear voice giving directions, and having discourse out in the open in front of everybody who's looking for guidance shakes their confidence in their leadership whereas if he had brought that to him they could have talked about that had a clear direction given to the crew

Odysseus trying to bring his men back to optimism (like a good leader should) but Eurylocus being a "negative nancy" the whole time is portrayed so well in the music and the animation. Then Ody has to take him aside (good leadership move again) and get more firm, both in orders and in the sharpness of his voice. What a great way to tell the story through music!

    You've already noticed how some characters have an instrument that symbolises them, like the different kinds of guitar for Odysseus and the piano for Athena, but what's very interesting is that Eurylochus's "instrument" is the chorus of the soldiers! So from a storytelling perspective, he kind of symbolises the entirety of Odysseus's crew, he's their spokesperson.

  • @SylviaDragon

    i think one of the cool things about how they do Eurylucus is that since he is basically the voice of the crew, he dose not have a "normal" instrument like all the other characters. instead the crew's vocals are his instrument. Going along with my coward comment: Eurylochus also constantly questions Ody in the Odyssey. Which isn't a bad thing in a second in command (especially when you make a risky choice) but a *good* second does exactly what Ody brings up here: takes the captain aside and brings up his opinion in private... especially when your Captain (and *King*) hasn't really made any mistakes that you can know yet. At the end of the day Poly did real damage but Ody saw most of them through that struggle and that was really the only 'mistake' Ody had made... but as far as anyone knows RIGHT now, he "fixed" it. Discord invites chaos and death, invite it only when necessary.
    Fun fact: Eurylochus's "instrument" is the rest of the crew.
    Fun Fact 2: You never get over Polites.

      Yeahh, I do understand it. Eurylochus was voicing doubts in front of the crew and sowing uncertainty. But I always take Eurylochus as the voice of the crew, also. They're all shaken from the cyclops encounter, and worry that their previously great leader might not be able to handle these new unknowns as well as they thought. I think Eurylochus, as the second in command, is bringing to Odysseus the conflicted, worried feelings of the crew, which a good captain should take into account. There's already some uncertainty, even distrust, mixed in there, which does lead into the next song's happenings, in my opinion 🤷

      @skyrimsnipr3605 5 місяців тому +10

      @@elieli2893 i get it, but starting that argument in front of the crew did nothing but make it worse. like another commenter said, that is the kinda thing leaders do in private so they can talk out their options and decide what to do next together without worrying the crew. Also odysseus is their King, so publicly being like "that sounds dumb what are you thinking" when he decides on a plan , especially after 10 years of constant war where he led them to victory without a single loss is seriously not ok. that is 'make an example' levels of not ok to do to your king. Eury could have just pulled him aside and been like, "you sure about that, what if something goes wrong?" and Odysseus probably wouldn't have had a problem with it.

    Odysseus is actually being _very_ manipulative here
    He has his plan & is unwilling to compromise/divert from it, he's unwilling to listen
    He goes for connection/warmth "where is this coming from, my friend"
    But when Eurylochus doesnt immediately soften/relent, he becomes indignant "And suddenly you doubt that i could figure this out?"
    When he addresses the crew, he's turning on the charm to placate their doubts AND reasserting his success rate at the same time, but he is _NOT_ listening to their concerns. He does not take them in mind at all
    THEN he pulls Eurylochus aside & tells him to shut up & get in line (again, does not _actually_ hear him out or consider anything he brings up)
    Man of many faces INDEED
    Like, is it any wonder Eurylochus' concerns/doubts only grow thanks to Odysseus' dismissive/defensive behavior?

      He doesn't change his plan because his plan is right. If his crew hadn't betrayed him in the next song, they would have gotten home just fine.
      Just because someone disagrees with your plan, doesn't mean it's wrong, and Odyseeus is both the leader and the only one with actual experience with a god.

    • @BeyondTrash-xe1vs
      @BeyondTrash-xe1vs 3 місяці тому

      Also Eurylochus isn't making much of an argument. They're trapped by a storm, and if they do nothing it will eventually ruin their boat. Meeting the wind god is the natural act to do, and Odyseeus as their king and leader is the only one who can truly do it.
      He also heard out and responded to Eurylochus throughout the song, there was nothing more to discuss in private.
      He is the leader, he doesn't have to deviate from what he believes is (and we see truly is) a good decision just because his second command disagrees.
      SPOILERS:
      If you carry that logic, then Odyseeus shouldn't have tried to stop Eurylochus and the crew from eating the Sun God's cow because they disagreed with him. He shouldn't have to go against his own judgements because his crew is a little anxious.

He's too much of a caution and violence first -kind of dude, he wants the most straightforward approach to everything, but the thing is, he's always the voice of the crew and puts their well-being first. He's also trying to keep Odysseus from pulling his crazy stunts and to be cautious. In this song, I find his point of view absolutely valid. Odysseus wants to run to the nearest god for help when the gods don't give a crap about humans' well-being and are able to destroy whole armies with a breath if they so wish. Yes, Odysseus' crew is a bunch of idiots and Eurylockus is not excluded from that, but Odysseus is also a very flawed human being who needs someone to at least try and speak common sense to him sometimes. Eurylockus' approach is consistently overly negative, but I mean, with a captain like Odysseus, I would also try to push the brakes a little.
      Also, the way Odysseus shuts him down at the end of the song is harsh and annoying to me, yes, this is not only a captain, it's a king, and you're not supposed to question his authority - but the man is his second in command, he's *supposed* to bring the crew's grievances for the captain to hear - and the captain is supposed to *listen* and modify his approach so that there won't be discord which will encourage mutiny.

      @@elieli2893 I agree with pretty much everything you said here, but I'd like to say one thing. While Odysseus was harsh at the end of the song, it was also the proper thing to do. As the second in command Eurylochus should have pulled him aside to have the conversation privately. By basically going "Hey, you're gonna get us all killed. Right guys, don't you think he's going to get us all killed?" he sowed distrust among the crew and doubt in their leader, which encourages a mutiny. Odysseus did the correct thing of acknowledging his concerns in public, then dressing him down in private. He had every right to go "Don't do that again. If you have a problem come to me privately instead of airing out your grievances in front of the whole crew."

      @@jlablue3401 That's true, I do agree with that, but I got more "shut up and follow me" than "tell me in private" from the end of their convo 😅
