I watched 21 Jump Street on an airplane during my business trip. I put the movie on just to fall asleep, but I ended up laughing my ass off throughout the movie while everyone else was sleeping.
I can watch Tropic Thunder forever and still laugh.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was one of the biggest ever, and was definitely not expected to do as well as it did. It turned out to be huge (making $107 million on a $15 million budget, 4 times what Friday made), launching Jim Carrey's career, spawning 2 sequels, and an animated series. How you didn't have that as at least an honorable mention, is beyond me.

This role was SUCH a departure for Tom Cruise. It's so surprising how good he was at it. I think he surprised himself with how much fun he had.
Tropic Thunder made me think Tom Cruise is pretty alright after all. Funny stuff.

Disappointingly, I saw some circulation of people being mad because RDJ did black face. The whole movie was a satire and RDJs character is supposed to show the extent some actors go through, obvi it’s an exaggeration but that’s what satire is about.
SJW's don't get satire. They are programmed to be offended as the first response to anything. There are social justice issues I believe in and stand against, but the SJW robo-tards are not prepared for any response but being offended by proxy, to everything.
I'm a black woman and I love Tropic Thunder. It always makes me facepalm when some idiot who never even saw the film tries to call RDJ problematic for doing blackface.
As a black man, I don't consider RDJ's performance as blackface. Traditional blackface mocked black people and portrayed us as laughable idiots. RDJ was mocking method actors and the lengths they will go to seem 'authentic' in a role. Huge difference!

I'm so glad no one had a issue with Tropic Thunder and Robert Downey Jr playing a black man. It was truly comedy and I wasn't offended at all.
Original Jumanji didn’t have a brother and sister sucked into a board game, they were friends.
And only one kid got sucked in. It was a brother and sister that freed him twenty-six years later. They found his friend and finished the game together.

The movie started with two friends playing and the boy was sucked into the game, then 30yrs later a brother and sister find the game and start playing, but this time aspects of the game spill over into the real world... including jungle animals, an obsessed hunter (played by the same actor who played the father of the lost boy from the start of the movie) and the lost boy who is now a grown adult Robin Williams...
I didn't expect anchorman to be good, but now it's one of my favourite movies ever.

My husband hated Will Ferrell before Anchorman. Now if he’s in anything my husband watches it.
I hated Will Ferrell’s comedy since his SNL days and still do, but Anchorman was fucking awesome. There is something about certain actors that bug me and he is one of them, but that movie is too good to let my hatred for his comedy get the better of me. Anchorman is great.

I was kind of surprised that the first Austin Powers movie wasn’t on this list. I remember seeing commercials for this movie on tv when it first came out. I kept thinking it was dirty toilet humor and only for immature boys. Once the second one came out everyone and their mothers went to see it. I went to see the second one and wasn’t sure if having basically boycotting the first one would be an issue and other than the first scene, the rest of the movie is it’s own thing. I was so glad I saw the second one and a short time later finally saw the first one and was so glad I did. However, IMO Austin Powers is one of those rare trilogies where the second movie is in many ways even better than the first.
The first one was funny, the second one was hilarious, the third one.......... a swing and a miss!

I was a teenager when I first saw the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure trailer and i thought it looked terrible. Its one of my all time favs now.

Um, where is There’s Something About Mary. A movie that only debuted at #4, but word of mouth catapulted it to #1 after 7 or 8 weeks or something like that.
That movie is the very definition of the basis of your list!!
I think you miss a point. Mary was a top line star cast, star Director, heavily promoted Internationally, and expected to be a success. - do you now understand what the above list is about?
@@cheapycheapy4689 100%, Stiller wasn’t a top star at the time and Diaz only had The Mask to her credit, The Farrelly brothers’ only hit at the time was Dumb and Dumber, it had a modest budget & release, and only had trailers to it’s promotion. It relied on word of mouth to become a hit, because, as you can see, only debuted at #4 for the weekend. I know all of this because I worked in the theater it was released in at the time. It didn’t get much attention, but grew from word of mouth, something foreign to modern audiences who only know things from hashtags and streaming.
Also, if Tropic Thunder can make this list, that MORE than exceeded all of the criteria that you just set forth. So, please, give me some more advice of something you seem to not have too much familiarity of first hand experience with. I love the unsolicited advice.

Hell, Ben Stiller was a bigger star around the time Tropic Thunder came out (along with other A listers Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughy, and Tom Cruise) than he was when Mary came out.
And, again, you're missing my point where the criteria you're applying actually apply to quite a few other movies that this list has. Hell, the #1 movie on this list had heavy international promotion and was expected to be a success.
I guarantee you, if you were to look up the weekend box office numbers from 1998 in boxofficeguru, you might get a better idea that no one, repeat NO ONE, expected Mary to do the business that it did. ESPECIALLY when a movie opens up at #4.

I would've put Mean Girls at #1. A bunch of my friends saw it without me when it came out b/c I didn't want to go. I didn't believe them afterwards that it was amazing so they went to see it a second time and insisted that I go with them. I obliged, and I was never so happy to be wrong. We started clapping so loud when the movie was over that I actually thought the entire theater was applauding along with us.
I suspect there are a lot of people who felt the same way about Clueless in the 90s.
My favorite comedy film of all time is hands down “Robin Hood: Men In Tights” with Mel Brooks

Now, Blazing Saddles on the other hand would be #1 in this category in my opinion. Mel Brooks wasn't famous when he made it and only he could have pulled it off. I am so glad that Bridemaids was included on this list. That movie is hilarious and it did such a good job combining so many different genres, that movie makes me laugh every time!

Nah, everyone expected Ace Ventura to to be good and it was, this list is for movies that people wouldn't expect to be good but were.
Oliver F. Ace Ventura was predicted by New York Times and other critics to just make up for its budget and at that time fans thought it was like a family friendly dramedy ,something like that but people laughed their asses off on first day
So it was an unexpected hit

Nacho libre, my exact same thought. Along with the movie "Hot Rod". Not at advertised enough, during there time, so not as commercially successful as they could have been, yet both were hidden little gems!
Also, I do think that Nacho Libre and Hot Rod, have that Napolean Dynamite sense of humor that not everyone is going to like. I belive you either love it or hate it. Luckily for me...I LOVE it all. 😁

This was a great list...it made me smile! Love it when a comedy surprises me - I remember seeing Ted in the movie theater absolutely dreading what my friend had chosen to watch. To this day I still text him and refer to him as my thunder-buddy and we laugh.
Not all comedies are great, but the one's that are usually stay with you🙂.

I would try to fit in Starksy and Hutch, Ben Still and Owen Wilson, and not sure if the Weeding Crashers was expected to be good but...cant have them all...so good work!

Super Troopers should be on this list. I never would have watched it if someone hadn't literally made me watch it with them, and now it's one of my favorite movies.
I like how they say that the $20 million Superbad budget was "minuscule", but Napoleon Dynamite's budget was $400 thousand.
John Cena didnt show up in Blockers. I can't find him in the movie. All I see is people talking to themselves and floating objects.

Bruh, Good Boys reminds me of myself when I was in 6th grade. It’ll be a classic within my heart.
Nice list, though there are a few I could remove to make room for Nice Guys, it was far better than an honorable mention for me. That film along with The 40 Year Old Virgin, Spy, Mean Girls and Game Night were all outstanding. Nice Guys and Game Night really stand out because I just watched them out of random curiosity on a lounging lazy Sunday in that "eh, nothing interesting catching my attention, never heard of what's on next, I'll just watch it" way, but struck entertainment gold.

When I watched Zombieland my first reaction was "how are people not talking about this movie?" What a genius movie!
I agree with most of the mentions from this list: Hot Tube, Tropic Thunder, 21 Jump, Game Night, and Nice Guys all incredibly surprised me. I would only include Pineapple Express in the list. I didn't expect anything from the movie and I almost pissed myself from laughing.
