We had to call an ambulence for my mother because she drank almost 6 liters of water in a day, cause she was sick and wanted to 'sweat it out'. This was extremly dangerous, she had a serious risk of dying, if we wouldn't have brought her to the hospital in time.
Yeah, too much of anything could kill someone. Being sick makes us all do ridiculous/dangerous things, thinking just isn't clear, hope she's doing better.
You can drown in any liquid though, not just water. The safest thing to do is not drink anything at all! Or, if you have to, make sure you're drinking solids.
Sasha The MMD Potato Same! I keep telling her that you don't need to drink 8 cups of water everyday, just because you read something off it on the internet.
People who live in a desert screaming... Like in arizona you most consume aprox 52 oz of water. Fun fact though is you also gain water when you eat various types of food.
Salt is lost in sweat, and a lack of salt can decrease the rate at which neurons fire, as electrolytes, such as salt, conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Slower neurons can lower reaction speed, ability to strategize, and ability to communicate. The sugar in sports drinks provide an immediate and easily accessed form of energy. The water is the least important part of sports drinks, besides needing something to suspend the particles in so it's not dust.
I have SIADH type c and chronic hyponatremia. I drink a lot because I have bad kidneys that make me thirsty all the time. I also drink a lot because I have anxiety and drinking reflex calms me down.
@@Majestic469 actually normal water also has a taste because your tongue gets used to the amount of salt that is in your saliva or water that's why you don't taste your saliva because your body is used to it. Even though water doesn't have a taste it still tastes different than your spit so you can taste it.
No it's drowning not the substance itself it's like car crashes when your drunk arnt considers fatalities by ahchohal it's death in coral action with the substance
Side note: Heat Stroke is something that often times can feel unnoticeable on an individual. In southwestern Arizona, the most dangerous thing you can die from during July is attending Fourth of July events and not remembering to sit in the shade every once in a while. Fire crews are always on duty during 4th of July events for reasons *other than fires caused by fireworks.* EMT's are always on active duty and, in July, are called in on heat strokes far too often. But, Adam is right. Drink when you're thirsty. If you live in an area where July temperatures reach over 120 degrees (Fahrenheit (because your pool would be over the point of boiling if it were Celcius)), remember to take frequent breaks in the shade and cool yourself down. Nothing sucks more than the *bill* of being transported to the ER with IV's stick in you. And believe me, you would prefer the IV's over the hospital bill. Especially if your insurance doesn't cover it.
Not completely related but my I went a a field trip where we had to stay outside for about 4 hours. Our teacher said don’t worry, you won’t get heat stroke. Then one of my friends got heatstroke and went to the hospital.
It’s called water intoxication and it pulls away the sodium needed to keep your nerves working, thats why you need electrolytes so drink gatoraid every now and then.
There was an event in my city called "hold your wee for a wii" where you would drink a ton of water for a free wii. Someone ended up dying because of overhydration.
Ironically for the video, the death could have been prevented if they drank something with sodium and potassium in it, like a sports drink. The point stands that it's dumb to drink that much in the first place though.
How much water you should drink varies from person to person. Age, activity, weight, metabolism... they all play a part. I'll say this though, it's better to be hydrated than dehydrated.
Lorenzo Chacon I don't mean to drink water like there's no tomorrow, but the body literally runs on water. If you have too much in the system, you pass it out.
The point of the video was that marketing and false studies make people think they should drink more than they should, and that it is best to just drink when you're thirsty.
It's almost impossible to get over hydrated since you have to actually put in effort to do so. Not saying getting dehydrating happens out of nowhere but it is way more common.
Did you know water contains dihydrogen monoxide? That's why we're so addicted to it! And that's not all - the addiction became so bad, that if you don't consume dihydrogen monoxide - you'll die! Overdosing on it will cause you to die aswell!
I actually go by a certain rule that not many people have come to follow: TOO MUCH OF *ANYTHING* is BAD! Think about it for a moment..I'm actually curious to see if there's something to disprove it..
Odd. Back when I wrestled our coach got all pissy if we stopped practicing for even 5 seconds to get a sip of water outside of our 1 minute water break every 20 minutes or so
Yeah, I don't feel thirsty when I'm dehydrated too. I didn't give it importance until my kidneys started hurting and now I'm constantly checking if I can salivate, if I can't then I have to drink. And I have to drink at least a liter of water when I'm exercising.
So then just eat when youre starving, only follow basic health guidelines when youre sick, and only shower/wash your hands when people start avoiding you
I once experienced severe dehydration. It didn't happen because I wasn't drinking enough, it happened because I was incredibly sick and spent two days shitting, pissing, and vomiting out every ounce of water I put into my body. I could barely walk, I was mostly crawling around the house, and at one point I passed out in the kitchen and I was only okay because my dad was around. It was probably the worst experience of my life. The fact that people think that they're going to have an experience like that, that happened during THE WORST SICKNESS OF MY LIFE, simply by not guzzling down as much water as they physically can, is insane.
DE Climax Exactly! I am a very stupid and forgetful person, so I forgot to drink anything for four days. I didn't feel or even think about being dehydrated until I began vomiting while moving into my new apartment. I kept telling my mom that I couldn't walk or move stuff without the literal gut-wrenching feeling, but she dismissed it. I was hospitalized, for I couldn't keep any shit down. Did you know a f*cking IV bag (just the bag, not the solution) is $250? I'm still freaked out about the whole visit; I usually just drink around a liter a day. Hate being sick, I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I'm sure you had it worse than me, I don't know why I'm "sharing my experience" here. Have a super great day!
dude same. i had gallstones last year and by the time i went to the ER they had to stick me 5 times before the iv went in i was so dehydrated. i was vomiting even though i hadn't eaten anything in at least 9 hours. not quite as bad of dehydration as you had, but the level of dehydration i had, combined with literally the worst pain ive ever had in my entire life, sustained for 48 hours, was the most awful experience i can remember. when they finally decided i needed surgery i wasnt even scared because it was either i die from surgery or they take out the problem, either way the pain would stop. dehydration is not something that happens in the absence of existing health conditions or illness unless you fail to listen to your body.
Dont listen to this in general. All depends on where you live and what you do. If you live in a hot area you should definitely drink more then just when you are thirsty.
I'm McChicken , and this is my McDonalds. I work here with my old man and my son , Big Mac. Everything here has a story and a value. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know WHAT is gonna come through that McChicken.
A very recent study from Harvard suggests 4-6 8oz (1 cup) glasses of water a day. Of course drinking when you’re thirsty is the right way to go for most people, but for anyone with mental illnesses or developmental disorders that make it difficult to sense and correctly interpret the signals your body sends (autism and adhd are both examples of this), or if executive function problems make you forget to act on those signals (major depression is an example) it’s very easy to not REALIZE you’re thirsty, or to forget to get up and get a drink when you are. So, in that case it could be helpful to count glasses and if it’s been a few hours since you had water, have another cup.
I'll tell you more, most people wouldn't feel thirsty just because of all the stress we receive constantly. I might just be overwhelmed with all the things I have to do, so I wouldn't really notice I didn't eat or didn't drink or even go to the bathroom. The problem isn't dehydration, the problem are long distance problems, such as blood clogs, high pressure because blood isn't fluent enough, heart diseases as a consequence. 8 glasses of water throughout a day wouldn't ever cause u a problem. Cases Adam described here happened because athletes were drinking more than 8 glasses and in shorter span of time. And yes, it should be water, a simple water, not gatorade, coffee, tea or what have u.
"A recent study from Harvard" *doesn't provide the study* Sit down unless you've got that study bud, because the ones found on Google say to drink when thirsty.
As an exercise physiologist, yes your research and statements are correct. However, people are much more likely to suffer from kidney stones, heat exhaustion, or even worst heat stroke than they are from over drinking. So this myth debunk can be very dangerous...
Finally, someone with some sense! This is why I refuse my kids water. I only let them drink Dr. Pepper. It is especially good for their teeth, and also, when they are loaded up on The Pepper, they don't need as much food, if any some days. I am a smart consumer.

“Just drink when you’re thirsty.” I don’t feel thirsty most of the time. I’ve gone through whole days not feeling thirsty and not drinking much all day. (I know that’s a tad bad)
If you don’t get thirsty enough, you should probably drink every couple hours anyway. People make dehydration a bigger deal than it is but if you don’t drink for an entire day than that’s just not good at all
I don't feel thirsty ever. As a child I twice ended up severly ill due to not drinking for days at a time. My parents 'solved' this by allowing me to become addicted to cola. As an adult I drink a lot of tea and check the colour of my urine. So if I followed the 'drink when you're thirsty' advice I'd just die.
Gatorade is just high fructose corn syrup and only 1% of you daily value of potassium. I work at convince store and sell way too much of this sugary Windex.
Yep. My undergraduate human anatomy teacher (the guy essentially screening students for medical school) would always go on rants about what was in beverages. He would say that sports drinks are primarily sugar water with just a touch of salts. The salts are actually lower in concentration than they are in a healthy body, so you're diluting all the excess sodium from your diet. The problem is that you don't get the other salts you need like potassium. That's why I alter my own drinks at home. I make big pitchers of Mio and add in pink himalayan salt and salt substitute which is just potassium salt. It tastes a tad salty, but if I get thirsty I can just drink regular water.
yeah people make sugar/salt water at home. if you add the right amounts, it tastes sweet enough but gives your body salt and sugar, both of which it needs
Why not ruin dieting? (example: Diet Sodas are JUST as bad for you as the regular sodas, potentially even worse in some cases, the sugar substitutes are worse than actual sugars. This is why i stopped drinking Soda and just stuck to water instead.)
Another example is how gluten-free foods aren't healthy for the average person, and were only intended to be substitutes for foods with gluten for the people with Celiac Disease.
diet soda is good for diabetics to avoid elevated blood sugar levels, it is bad for diabetics because it triggers the body to think there is sugar, leading to low sugar levels and feelings of hunger, causing them to eat more and put on more weight.
Yeah there are a lot of situations where this doesn't count. You have people who are constantly thirsty and should thus drink like 3x the amount compared to other people and people who rarely feel thirst but should really not forgot to drink water (elderly and some individuals). Some people (myself included) need to regularily drink water against migraines/headaches even if you're not feeling thirsty at that time because you'll regret it if you don't.
Thank you! This. Exactly. I have a medical condition where I have to drink a lot more water than people ever think is healthy when I tell them how much I need to just function. If my primary care and specialist doctors never complained about my water intake...why would I care about what others have to say, people n*not* in charge of my care? Especially when most people I know don't drink water on a regular basis.
@@CLJlovesmal There are medical conditions where people should not go out into public spaces because they could die. General advice like this is nullified when talking about conditions
XXscrublordXXX na alcohol itself does not directly affect the color of your urine. The color, whether it's dark or clear, depends on how hydrated or dehydrated your body is.
Two important things from someone in Arizona: - You will absolutely have to drink more water in the Arizona desert than you had to in colder climates even if you don't go outside much, because it's just that much drier here. It's kind of a brutal adjustment for someone used to any other climate. Your thirst response will need to adapt for the first couple days. - Important though it is, more water won't save you from heatstroke if you're out in the sun all day, and heatstroke can absolutely be deadly. Stay in the shade whenever possible.
@@Haiesta my comment was more to the point: it's warm you drink more. Happens every summer in temperate climates. In the desert / extreme hot climates? Well you better have a lot to drink on hand... Or you're ficked
A protein shake BEFORE a workout full of BCAAs will actually help you more as protein takes about an hour per 10g to absorb. Now, BCAAs, or Base Chain Amino Acids get sucked up quick. A post workout shake helps your body with Protein Synthesis and recover faster because Whey Protein is the fastest protein your body can absorb, the only thing faster is straight up amino acids. I have both a pre and post workout shake cause I lift heavy and very often following a golden age bodybuilding style routine of two body parts a day: Chest and back, Legs, arms and shoulder. I do this six days a week and train to near failure, you might not train as hard or often so the best thing I can recommend that'll save you money is have a good shake prior, or do what I do and have both prior and after, or mix some BCAAs into your water 30 minutes beforehand to get them in your system quick. Oh, and you do wanna drink water if you're a very active person or train hard cause you will get cramps, I've had them, not fun when using a leg press machine with 8 45s and still have 5 more reps to go. Hope this helps my friend. Of course like they said, don't over hydrate, but do drink cause oxygen in your muscles while training is very VERY good.
You do know a lot of the information out there about fitness is just wrong and is normally just rumors spread through gyms/misinformation/VERY little actual study on it. You can just apply supplements to this video instead of water and it works exactly the same, the whole point is to make you believe they work and waste your money on them.
Rangaros It's different per person, if your goal is muscle growth and development then supplementing with BCAAs and Protein is a must, no matter how much chicken you eat the body just won't absorb the protein as fast as say Whey Protein Isolate, and Amino Acids get sucked up really quick, so while a post work shake is a good thing, a pre workout shake will help, cause it takes time for your body to absorb the Amino Acids and proteins, and taking it before means that you'll get those Proteins and Amino Acids right when you need them most. You can search all this up this isn't bro science it's fact, as well as years working out and finding out what works and what doesn't.
My mom: HONEY DRINK MORE WATER YOU GOING TO BECOME DEHYDRATED Me: ACTUALLY ( says everything Adam says) Mom: DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET Me: YOU LEARNED TO KEEP DRINKING WATER ON THE INTERNET
I know right- My mom reads something on the internet and thinks it's true. And then I look at actual science, research, and actual facts to see if it's true. *Most of the time it's not-*
On the flip side alot of people ignore thirst when they are busy and get dehydrated leading to hospitalization. Example heatstroke becomes more probable when you dont drink enough water for your body to cool itself. This video can be dangerous. Most of us in a desert environment are not drinking enough for our bodies to properly function. It wont kill us but increases the chance of other health issues.
I always heard that by the time you’re thirsty you’re already somewhat dehydrated. I also heard that if you’re craving something salty, that means you’re thirsty. 🤔
Being thirsty is the natural, biological way your body alerts you that you need to drink something. The idea that you should drink enough to never be thirsty is just nonsense invented by drinks companies, with no scientific basis whatsoever.
Really, anyone who had at least a biology class in high school should understand the importance of drinking enough water, not gatorade... Too little water intake while eating processed and salty foods most people eat these days will cause deposits to accumulate and cause kidney stones.
and anyone who had at least common sense knows the body isn't stupid its a very sensible piece of equipment that can measure what it needs, you know normal well functioning bodies experiment a phenomenon called "thirst" that tells you "hey moron im kind of dry" so how much water you need? maybe as much as your body(yeah that old thing that has been since the dawn of the man to keep you alive) tells you, in the case your body isnt working correctly filling with so much water can damage it too, i mean you took biology class so im sure you know what happens to your cells if you go too crazy on your H2O
Obviously over consumption of water is a whole different game ,however dehydration occurs way more frequently then over hydration in the real world, Why or how you may ask ? Because the body mistakes the signal of being thirsty with being hungry and most cases people will eat instead of drinking a glass of water because they think they feel hungry. By the time you're thirsty you''re already lacking fluids. There's quite a difference between surviving like our ancestors did and being healthy. The average life expectancy from those days isn't even comparable to today's and we have much more diseases and antibiotic resistant bacteria.
ibanez1403 you can always eat watermelons or soup :V, problem is ppl eat hot dogs, chips and other dry stuffs, but if you eat what you should eat you get a lot from food too
cortster12 guy's calm down, please.I really doubt that i have diabetes, it was just a joke about me drinking alot of water; i don't ACTUALLY drink that much.
Remember the woman who died who died because of a radio contest to see who could drink the most water without peeing. She won the car but lost her life 😭
I'm a runner and a heavy sweater. I've lost 8-9 pounds on long runs, even though I had plenty to drink. On my first marathon, I dehydrated and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Second marathon, I was a lot more diligent about hydrating in the days leading up to the race, and everything was great. I'm not shooting for a set number of glasses per day. Essentially, I'm drinking when I'm thirsty. However, it seems like drinking more causes me to be more thirsty.
+Robot404 so water intoxication is where the stomach, unable to process any more water (I think the threshold is about 8L), starts offloading pure water into the bloodstream, to get more space to process the water. When this occurs in high amounts the now water rich blood in the brain swells brain cells, therefor causing the tissue to swell. This swelling against the hard skull casing bruises the brain causing hemorrhaging, as well as a brutally painful death with immense pressure on the skull. It is widely considered one of the worst deaths possible, contrasted to drowning, one of the more pleasant.
I summer camp I went to had a mandatory 2 litres of water a day rule But it was for good reason, the year before they put that rule in place, over 20 girls were admitted to the health unit for dehydration, one of them even went to the hospital. It’s a pretty hard core camp
Therein we have a problem. JUST DRINK WHEN THIRSTY. We're living in a culture that demands results & by default orders us to power through the pain & orders isolation.
Yeah, but i think this video is mostly targeted to people who live in country's not made out of sand. I come from Morroco. Which desert do you live in?
While there is some truth to this, I have to say overall it's a very bad video. Some people are far more prone to dehydration such as myself. To send people the message to only drink when you feel thirsty is totally dangerous. In my opinion you should be actively thinking about your hydration, no need to overdo it but it's silly to think it will always take care of itself when so many people have passed out/died from dehydration
"What about the advice to drink 8 glasses a day? Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day." That's about 1.9 liters, which isn't that different from the Institute of Medicine recommendations. Although the "8 by 8" rule isn't supported by hard evidence, it remains popular because it's easy to remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be reframed as: "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," because all fluids count toward the daily total. Intense exercise. During long bouts of intense exercise, it's best to use a sports drink that contains sodium, as this will help replace sodium lost in sweat and reduce the chances of developing hyponatremia, which can be life-threatening" www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256?pg=2 Elderly people lose often their sense of hunger and thirst. Their kidneys also lose their effectiveness in dilution and in concentration. Providing an optimal hydration helps the kidney work at its best. "Drinking enough fluid is the most important thing a person can do to prevent kidney stones" It's really easy to end up drinking too little, to the point of harm, while drinking so much water that it hurts your body is more than quite difficult.
If you are not thirsty then your body is hydrated. Not sure how you missed this point or maybe you suck at being human. Your body can survive three days without water. I feel like you plugged your ears during the video.
+blackice7317 I listened to the video with and OPEN MIND, and I can say that it does more harm than good in terms of the education it provides. I have gotten badly dehydrated very suddenly when I was not thirsty all morning and had in fact been drinking non caffenated tea in the morning. I passed out there times just trying too get a glass of water, so I know first hand that 'drink only when thirsty' is BS and a dangerous thing to tell any young athlete, or anyone for that matter
Paul Stergios There's even a "I didn't know I was pregnant!" show XD and they think you can trust thirst and hunger? When was the last time someone felt hungry for fibers and healthy fats?
I'm a doctor. I disagree with the conclusion of the movie. My current job concerns patients with stroke. In many cases dehydration is the essence of the problem and iv fluids are the main cure. That is cause dehydration leads to low brain transfusion and gives the same symptoms and signs as stroke. Of course children, that have access to water on call will not dehydrate during sports. But if the are in diarrhea or high fever with sweating they might. Also long time on sun without access to water on demand can lead to unnecessary hospitalization just to rehydrate a child. In adults diuretics taken against hypertension are next problem. Also working long hours in the fields on sunny day. In old people You should also ad low thirst. The part of the brain responsible for electrolyte and water homeostasis is old or educated not to drink. Some people with heart, kidney or liver failure have trouble with water balance. Usually 2 or more of above lead to severe status. I've never seen any patient with symptomatic hyponatremia that wouldn't be caused by drugs, vomiting or diarrhea. I heard abut the sports diselectrolytemia, but it is rare. Mostly during summer marathon in Śrem we get many dehydrated patients who fainted during run. Organized, pro sports should be secured by access to as water as electrolytes. I don't suggest using industrially produced rehydrates (gatorade, isostar and so on). Specially in children. Normal water on demand is the best drink to rehydrate and kitchen salt and sugar in standard food covers the basic electrolyte call. If You are not a pro sportsman, nothing ales is needed. If You are a pro You should trust you're health advisers or change them to ones You trust. This is serious issue. In my opinion cramps have nothing to do with the water or electrolyte balance. I tried to treat with potassium, sodium, magnesium and so one. Cramps is just something that comes from forced body position or forced recurrent movement. Overstrain, hunger or surfeit are the favoring agents. Also passive congestion or ischemia often lead to cramps. 6
I notice none of the drones here commenting on your informed, educated opinion. This is a field where my engineering degree is a pile of useless, but as someone that stays fit, active, and has been involved with sports my whole life I agree. Water is 100 percent of my hydration needs and yes Gatorade and other mass produced "sports" drinks are just as bad for you as a soda pop. You keep fighting the ignorance Doc
+Dies1r4e his comment is less than an hour old, so give it time. His disagreement is for people with underlying medical issues, the video isn't geared towards that crowd. The video format is short and doesn't include the caveats for people with medical issues but those people should already have talked to their doctors about the subject. It's similar watching a video on how much sugar the average person can eat then disagreeing with the whole video because they didn't specify that diabetics shouldn't consume that much sugar. The advice to drink when your body tells you to(and not drink excessive amounts of water or force your athletes to) works for the vast majority of healthy people.
well, i don't disagree with you, however, this video is directed to a majority, which are healthy, normal people who only need to remember to drink some water a day, and make sure they pay attention to their thirst levels. obviously, people with health problems will have other concerns in mind, and they need to listen to their doctors. it's foolish to say that this video is saying " no one needs to drink water unless they're thirsty".
AndreinneLawrence This video is set to a sports background. So I am going to assume it is not directed at the average joe sitting in his office chair. It will be perceived by people to mean that there kids, involved in athletics don't need to hydrate.
Dies1r4e well....yeah, that's a good point. the setting of the video could lead people to the wrong conclusion about what the video is actually literally saying. they could see the setting, as you said, and forget everything the guy said and simply assume that " oh, he said that kids in sports don't need to drink water", even though the guy literally said "make sure they have a water source and let them drink when they're thirsty." so, you're right.
I agree with a lot of what he said, but living in Texas, and playing soccer all throughout the summer, I can tell you tell you that you can get light headed BEFORE you get thirsy. I've seen people pass out then saying they weren't even thirsty. So just know it's possible to have bad symptoms before you feel the need to drink water.
Agreed. Seen cases of dehydration and heat stroke in the hospital where they said they didn't feel thirsty at all. So they didn't drink any water. Elderly pts also lose some of their ability to tell thirst. This makes drinking a set amount of water every day important. 2 liters is a little unfounded but that's are baseline at present in the medical field.
Heat sickness will actually remove the thirst you’re feeling, and dehydration kicks in really quickly in high heat or high humidity environments. The key phrase the doctor said is that drinking when thirsty is fine when you have access to water. That isn’t always the case, which is why it’s good to stay properly hydrated. I suffered from dehydration twice and heatstroke twice while overseas. Dehydration feels absolutely terrible but easily fixed. The heatstroke will kill ya ded.
I really think this doesn’t take into consideration various medical conditions. I’m pregnant. And I’m rarely thirsty but I rarely drink water. And let me tell you. I pay for it. Excess Braxton Hicks, lightheadedness, etc. all sorts of problems. I stay hydrated and those things go away. I don’t always agree with all of these videos because they tend to be over generalized.
I'm not saying I fear death or worry too much over dehydration, but, when I went biking this one time, I almost passed out because I didn't prehydrate. So out of Experience, I say if you drink when thirsty and excercising hard, you're off to a bad start.
I sweat a lot. Last year I went to our local fan convention which is in a cement building with ten tonnes of people. I got an extreme headache because I didn't pre-hydrate either - it's a ton of walking in extreme heat. I went with a bottle of gatorade the next day and felt much more human after that.
In terms of those who don't vigorously exercise, then this is all correct. However, people like me who run in excess of 5+ miles a day, from straight runs to split repeats at race pace, 8 glasses should be a minimum by 2pm.
This video also doesn't apply in some cases if you're using drinks that "dehydrate" you such as coffee and soda. I've gone to the ER due to Vision/Hearing loss caused by dehydration after a day of only eating very salty potato chips and coffee. Thirst is only so accurate and there's ways you can fool it.
So you're telling us you drink stuff before knowing beforehand it's a dehydrating drink? That's like saying, this first aid kit only applies in some cases. I used this rust covered bandage i found on the ground somewhere and now i got a huge infection. Also i find it hard to believe you had to go to the ER after "a day" of eating chips and drinking coffee. Seems to me you just live an unhealthy lifestyle in general and that one day just pushed it over the edge.
But often i find that drinking more leads to myself just feeling better overall. It's some days around 8 cups, but the amount of times i go to the toilet tells me that's probably a littlr much. It's better for the kidneys because they have more liquid to filter particles into urine, decreasing risk of kidney stones. When taking creatine and working out, it is important as more is being used for your muscles. Drinking more decreases appetite, decreasing the challenge of weight gain. There are benefits to drinking more. Just don't overdo it.
It' also helps with weight loss. I need to lose a LOT of weight and i was struggling with eating less but i now have an alarm that goes off every hour from 9am to 9pm and i don't eat hardly any snacks any more and the same meal that that i would have eaten a week prior to starting and still feeling a bit hungry now fills me half way through it.
A very informative video, but something to consider is that some people (such as those with mental health issues or disorders) can have difficulty discerning when they are thirsty or hungry. Telling someone to drink more water can be necessary, it all depends on the individual and their needs.
"Homo erectus were the first of the hominins to emigrate from Africa, and, from 1.8 to 1.3 million years ago, this species spread through Africa, Asia, and Europe. One population of H. erectus, also sometimes classified as a separate species Homo ergaster, remained in Africa and evolved into Homo sapiens." Google that shit
Good one, this is a misleading video and gives misinformation. Maybe we have reached the idiocracy era. According to this video er might as well ditch water and start drinking brawndo. What will they say next smh
The correct conclusion is that it's subjective. It depends on the person, the enviorment, and the activities of a person, but you are correct that it's ridiculous to set a threshold for every single person
It really depends on your environment, exercise and what other foods or drinks you have. When I moved to a humid climate I wasn't used to drinking more water so I used to pass out, my aunt told me to drink more water and it fixed it.
I hate those kids who have PTA soccer moms for parents and have them enrolled in half a dozen sports and they come back talking shit when they have half a brain
But rugby and international footballs is fine? Per player more people get concussions and serious injuries more often in both of those sports than American Football. The issue with American Football isn't concussions, it's repeated minor trauma to the head over time, which is why the cornerstone of any good program is safety over aggression. The only issue with that is crazy programs in Socal and Texas, they are fucking nuts down there.
It's worse when you can't feel thirst or if you feel it in a really limited way, which is my case. If I don't excersise and just go about my day as usually, I can say that my thirst level is always the same and it's like really low. I know I'm chronically 'dehydrated' (not to an extreme level, but I know that I drink too little), but don't really feel it. So I guess the 8 glasses thing would work for me if I weren't so forgetful.
Drinking when you're "thirsty" seems a bit farfetched in some occasions. Seriously, if I lived by that I wouldn't really drink anything at all, it's only because I've experienced being severely dehydrated rather often and the symptoms suck so much that I've had to make drinking water to my meals a habit - I even like the taste of water! I just forget to hydrate in general...
Yeah, "drink when you're thirsty" fails some people for the same reasons "eat when you're hungry" does -- some people's response to that kind of thing just doesn't work reliably enough for that to be sufficient.
I get what you’re saying. Today at dinner I realized it was the first time I drank anything at all today, at 6:00. Why? Because I wasn’t thirsty. I skipped breakfast, so no liquids either. Surprisingly I didn’t drink anything at lunch. And I never felt thirsty at all until dinner. You don’t need eight glasses a day, but just try to make a habit of staying hydrated.
@@nothanks9980 I've seen people eating dry food only and not feeling an inch of thirst, the best thing to do is drinking 120 ml a day (half of a little bottle) and you'll be fine if it's not summer and you live in a hot area of your country
monky clicking a link and reading through an entire article would take considerably longer than just adding "within X years" at the end of a sentence. I mean i'm just saying.
By the way, I tend to explain myself at the end, so don’t stop at the middle :3 Stick by the rule of 3 You can survive: 3 minutes without oxygen 3 hours in extreme weather with no protection 3 days without water 3 weeks without food (If there is anything else I forgot) Over hydration is dangerous hue to excess water in the cells, most dangerously in the brain where there isn’t any room to swell, meaning *extreme* [emphasis on extreme] over hydration can cause brain damage :3
The writers of this have never done an hours sport in their life. When you're playing a sustained period of time without stoppage such as in Soccer or Rugby, you don't get to choose when your next water break is, as it could be 45 mins away :/ So you preemptively drink water at any stoppage even if you're not thirsty, to prevent that dry throat 10 mins down the line when you need to make several big tackles in a row or a run.
Agreed. I generally wait until I'm thirsty to drink during the day, but with as much as I sweat, if I don't chug a couple bottles' worth of water before I start then I feel like I'm having to play catch up when I start lifting or jogging, which inhibits my performance until I get enough water in my system.
I think the writers of this videos don't disagree and don't say otherwise. Of course you can foresee when you will be thirsty know that you won't be able to drink, so you drink in advance. I think their aim was kinda to challenge the prejudiced idea that we have to drink a lot, on average. They don't say "drink when you're thristy and ONLY when you are".
+Lucas Leroy yeah but those adverts they were mocking were for sports drinks for sports people, and the key point of the video was aimed at a football coach. No ones telling fat terry the couch potato to drink 8 glasses of water a day
you're right. and more water in general improves your overall health. when I drink a crazy amount of water, I don't need medicine when I'm sick. it takes about a day and a half then I'm back to feeling better. more water helps with weight loss. football players hydrate a ridiculous amount and still suffer cramps often.
I hardly ever exercise but I'm not fat, I'm naturally skinny. My body is really weird because the more I eat the more I lose weight for some reason. Like I once ate a 5 pound 4 foot long chocolate bar in less than 3 days and I lost 10 pounds.
your body gains weight moreso when you eat the right foods. Your piss, snot, shit, etc are all trash thrown out by your body. You put trash in, it will throw it out. It doesn't need it. So that chocolate bar just got pushed right out. Burgers, blah blah blah. Sure, at some point you'll get fat if you stay on a steady diet of burgers and all that but by the mechanics of the body, after a while it feels the need to hold onto something to help you live. Burgers are unhealthy in the sense of being too much healthy additions of grease sauce etc. But the meat itself contains nutrition. And the pickles etc. Eating all junk and some healthy stuff won't give you healthy weight. Either you won't gain for a while, still being unhealthy. Skinny people are unhealthy as well. Or your body will hold onto it and don't want to let go because you're starving it of what it really needs. So overly fat people and really unhealthy skinny people are equal. Neither one looks good or is better.
That's funny because I eat only junk food and I'm 140 pounds. Was 120 pounds till I started working out. I had about 5 doughnuts today. And I shit every 2 weeks. That's just how I am I don't know why.
It IS true that if you consume a load of salty foods ex: french fries, burgers, more stuff DRINKING A LITTLE MORE WATER levels out your sodium levels, reducing heart attack probability.
Safir here’s an alternative Don’t eat a bunch of salty crap in the first place. So many people in America (including me sometimes) eat a bunch of salt and it is not good for you. So drink more water if you eat fast food everyday
Carson Morris Yeah when I eat a meal 2000 miligrams of salt is the absolute max. I can eat that amount but I feel thirsty after & I drink a couple glasses
Also I hate it when people say junk food is bad because it is only bad if you have a limited diet! If you only eat junk food, then yeah, it’s pretty bad, but just eat some rice or peanut butter or fruits or veggies or literally anything else and you will feel better.
While there is no medical reason to drink *exactly 8 glasses* of water a day, the rule is just there *to remind people to drink water daily* and *to give a simple estimate* of how much water one should take daily. There are medical reasons to drink water, like to *alleviate and/or prevent constipation and kidney stones* . Staying hydrated is important for your health. Some people need more than that 8 glasses, some people need less. A lot of factors determine how much fluid intake your body needs, like sickness, environmental temperature, and physical activity, amongst others. And remember, you can also eat your water by consuming foods with a high water content like watermelon. Also, overhydration poses health risks (it leads to water intoxication which can be life-threatening), as does dehydration (also has life-threatening complications). So it's important to drink just enough water, not too much water and not too little. And, since calculating exactly how much gets a little bit complicated, even doctors and scientists will tell you to go by the 8 glasses (medium-sized glasses), unless there is a specific reason otherwise, because while *drink when you're thirsty* may work, some people's thirst mechanism may be inhibited for one reason or another. But people do overdo it because they forget that coffees and sodas and such count as fluids, as do foods high in water content.
Yvonne Wabai just because watermelon, coffee, and soda are liquids doesnt mean they count as water intake. In fact the high sugar, sodium, and caffeine make you even thirstier, so to make up for that you have to drink even more water
Yung Dice True - but are you sure about the watermelon? I don't think it's high enough in sugar to dehydrate. But yeah, I definitely get thirsty after coffee, soda and refined sugar.
For some reason, this video made me pretty thirsty.

We don’t drink Gatorade because it’s “Rehydrating” we drink it because it’s sweet
It's salty more than sweet. Salt makes you thirsty. So it makes you drink more.
SirDistic no it helps u retain water
It's just drinkable sweat. It restores electrolytes. Not really for thirst.
The electrolytes in it quench you're thrust in the moment but make you're thirst worse later on

Side note:
Heat Stroke is something that often times can feel unnoticeable on an individual.
Something I learned during medical training is if you drink when you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

Ironically for the video, the death could have been prevented if they drank something with sodium and potassium in it, like a sports drink. The point stands that it's dumb to drink that much in the first place though.
There should have been a condition: if someone dies for holding their pee, there's no wii for anyone. That'll make them care for themselves XD

Drinking a lot is good (not too much) but you dont have to.
How much water you should drink varies from person to person. Age, activity, weight, metabolism... they all play a part. I'll say this though, it's better to be hydrated than dehydrated.
kennedy m. It's better to be dehydrated than over hydrated as when you're dehydrated you know that it's time to drink
Lorenzo Chacon I don't mean to drink water like there's no tomorrow, but the body literally runs on water. If you have too much in the system, you pass it out.
The point of the video was that marketing and false studies make people think they should drink more than they should, and that it is best to just drink when you're thirsty.
Bob Birdsong I get that. But I'm also making the point that it's safer to be hydrated than to not be.
It's almost impossible to get over hydrated since you have to actually put in effort to do so. Not saying getting dehydrating happens out of nowhere but it is way more common.
To be fair, if you’re at freaking football practice, you ARE going to feel thirsty every 20 minutes or so.

DE Climax your condition was dysentery lmfao
That sounds horrible. I started feeling tipsy when I read this, and I'm lying in bed...
I think that was cholera
dude same. i had gallstones last year and by the time i went to the ER they had to stick me 5 times before the iv went in i was so dehydrated. i was vomiting even though i hadn't eaten anything in at least 9 hours. not quite as bad of dehydration as you had, but the level of dehydration i had, combined with literally the worst pain ive ever had in my entire life, sustained for 48 hours, was the most awful experience i can remember. when they finally decided i needed surgery i wasnt even scared because it was either i die from surgery or they take out the problem, either way the pain would stop. dehydration is not something that happens in the absence of existing health conditions or illness unless you fail to listen to your body.
But if you have irritable bowel syndrome don’t listen to this, you need water to stay healthy with that condition
Or IBD I have Ulcerative Colitis but 8 glasses might be extreme unless you have a flare.
Dont listen to this in general. All depends on where you live and what you do. If you live in a hot area you should definitely drink more then just when you are thirsty.

+JaxfirebusIsBack1 dieting is completely fine (otherwise, how would people lose weight?) but sure, diet drinks can be worse than the sugar versions.
JaxfirebusIsBack1 diet soda actually makes you wanna eat more!
Diet soda is good for diabetics though :)

Two important things from someone in Arizona:
- You will absolutely have to drink more water in the Arizona desert than you had to in colder climates even if you don't go outside much, because it's just that much drier here.
People in temperate climes know this effect as "summer". It's hotter and you drink more because you sweat more and get thirsty more^^

Adam please do an Episode on protein shakes and workout love the show
A protein shake BEFORE a workout full of BCAAs will actually help you more as protein takes about an hour per 10g to absorb.

OMG THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST LIKES IVE GOT THANK YOU SO MUCH
I thought I had the only parents like this
I always heard that by the time you’re thirsty you’re already somewhat dehydrated.
Well the video didn't say that you shouldn't drink water. Both under consumption and over consumption are bad for the kidneys (and the whole body) .
and anyone who had at least common sense knows the body isn't stupid its a very sensible piece of equipment that can measure what it needs, you know normal well functioning bodies experiment a phenomenon called "thirst" that tells you "hey moron im kind of dry" so how much water you need? maybe as much as your body(yeah that old thing that has been since the dawn of the man to keep you alive) tells you, in the case your body isnt working correctly filling with so much water can damage it too, i mean you took biology class so im sure you know what happens to your cells if you go too crazy on your H2O
The average life expectancy from those days isn't even comparable to today's and we have much more diseases and antibiotic resistant bacteria.
ibanez1403
you can always eat watermelons or soup :V, problem is ppl eat hot dogs, chips and other dry stuffs, but if you eat what you should eat you get a lot from food too

Yeah, it's incredibly fucking difficult to die from water intoxication.
So ... drowning?
That's not so much the water killing you, but the lack of air to breathe.
TheOneLichemperor Oh, so it's not murderer that strangles you and kills you, it is the lack of air to breathe.
Try that one out in court... =P

Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a
day." That's about 1.9 liters, which isn't that different from the
Institute of Medicine recommendations. Although the "8 by 8" rule isn't
supported by hard evidence, it remains popular because it's easy to
remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be reframed as: "Drink
eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," because all fluids count toward
the daily total.
Intense exercise. During long bouts of intense

Providing an optimal hydration helps the kidney work at its best.
"Drinking enough fluid is the most important thing a person can do to prevent kidney stones"
It's really easy to end up drinking too little, to the point of harm, while drinking so much water that it hurts your body is more than quite difficult.

Paul Stergios
There's even a "I didn't know I was pregnant!" show XD and they think you can trust thirst and hunger?
Dies1r4e well....yeah, that's a good point. the setting of the video could lead people to the wrong conclusion about what the video is actually literally saying. they could see the setting, as you said, and forget everything the guy said and simply assume that " oh, he said that kids in sports don't need to drink water", even though the guy literally said "make sure they have a water source and let them drink when they're thirsty."
so, you're right.
I agree with a lot of what he said, but living in Texas, and playing soccer all throughout the summer, I can tell you tell you that you can get light headed BEFORE you get thirsy. I've seen people pass out then saying they weren't even thirsty. So just know it's possible to have bad symptoms before you feel the need to drink water.
same in australia
Is it not possible that they passed out from hyperthermia, and not dehydration. Those are two distinct conditions.
'drink when you get thirsty' is stupid advice. I will get a headace from not drinking enough before i realize i haven't had anything to drink all day

No. At best, you can make that claim about yourself. Even then, how do you know lack of "prehydration" was the cause of you almost fainting?
+astrangeone did you have access water when you needed it? if it costs, you might deny your thirst to skip paying
Maybe you should drink during the bike ride. Even bike racers hydrate during the race.
agree it has happened to me too.
As a cross country runner, I can assure you that having anything less than 60oz of water on an active day, especially a meet day is absolute death...
In terms of those who don't vigorously exercise, then this is all correct. However, people like me who run in excess of 5+ miles a day, from straight runs to split repeats at race pace, 8 glasses should be a minimum by 2pm.
Yes people who exercise should be drinking upwards of a gallon a day
This video also doesn't apply in some cases if you're using drinks that "dehydrate" you such as coffee and soda.

It’s ‘Adam *fixes* everything’ to me
I'm thirsty after this video. May I drink now?
I'm feeling wanna go to pee now
No
"Take a lap"
"I would never make it all around"

"That's how humans have done it for millions of years" The human species is only 200,000 years old lol.
Is this Neil DeGrasse Tyson's alt account?
your stupid
very very stupid or just trolling
+CollegeHumor no this is logic.
+Donte Fusion you're*
HA! I DRINK A LOT ANYWAY AND DON'T EXERCISE! I NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS! ALL I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT is being fat :(
Same ;-;
I hardly ever exercise but I'm not fat, I'm naturally skinny. My body is really weird because the more I eat the more I lose weight for some reason. Like I once ate a 5 pound 4 foot long chocolate bar in less than 3 days and I lost 10 pounds.
+BulletHell13 It's probably my metabolism.
your body gains weight moreso when you eat the right foods.

“Adam Ruins Breathing! Why you don’t need to breath!”
I know this is a joke but this can actually be a real episode. Oxygen can actually be dangerous
@@yartastic Yeah it can kill people with only 0g of it
Air is made of more nytrogen than oxygen so...
100% of people who breathe die and
100% of people who don't breathe are probably already dead
Ok is there something safe
3:49 The kid on the left got wiped from existence
It IS true that if you consume a load of salty foods ex: french fries, burgers, more stuff DRINKING A LITTLE MORE WATER levels out your sodium levels, reducing heart attack probability.
Safir here’s an alternative
Don’t eat a bunch of salty crap in the first place. So many people in America (including me sometimes) eat a bunch of salt and it is not good for you. So drink more water if you eat fast food everyday
Carson Morris
Yeah when I eat a meal 2000 miligrams of salt is the absolute max.
I can eat that amount but I feel thirsty after & I drink a couple glasses
I have orthostatic problems so I have to eat a lot of salt and drink a lot of water
Salt. Makes. You. THIRSTYYYYYY!!!! Drink when you are thirsty.
Also I hate it when people say junk food is bad because it is only bad if you have a limited diet! If you only eat junk food, then yeah, it’s pretty bad, but just eat some rice or peanut butter or fruits or veggies or literally anything else and you will feel better.
So the truth is
Everything comes down to money and greed
Doesnt everything
Ye, that about sums it up
Except photons
wait a moment, i need to find surprise... oh wait, i'm all out
Yes
Instead of Adam ruins everything it should be Yvonne Wabai ruins everything
Yvonne Wabai just because watermelon, coffee, and soda are liquids doesnt mean they count as water intake. In fact the high sugar, sodium, and caffeine make you even thirstier, so to make up for that you have to drink even more water
Yung Dice True - but are you sure about the watermelon? I don't think it's high enough in sugar to dehydrate. But yeah, I definitely get thirsty after coffee, soda and refined sugar.
Yep
