@@joejug162 No, but 17 year olds like to think that they do, just like 14 year olds do. Odds are a person is a lot better at making decisions of this magnitude, and with such shitty consequences, when they're older and are down right unsuited to make them at that young age.
In Sweden you can loan about 7000 dollar each semester. And that’s just to cover living expenses. (Since tuition is 0 dollars). And the interest rate on student loans is 0,16%. This is what I gladly pay taxes for.
I think the interest is a little too low, it should be exactly the same as the inflation rate. In this case the government is giving you free money. Don't get me wrong: getting free money is good, but I think it should be used to finance other things Sweden probably already has.
Pah, what a waste.. those tax dollars could pay so much more useful things than the education of your future doctors and engineers. Tax cuts for corporations, golf trips for presidents, bailouts for the gambling debts of banks..
I think this that is a bad system. now I do agree college can be a waste of money in the states spending but tax money on other people’s colleges is a waste of money.
Aron Huinink This is why student loans are a great way to get money. People that are able to take the loan, and invest the money. You have to pass 75% of your classes you borrow for though or you have to pay it back.
That's just a meme and depends on the field you go into. If you go into a heavily saturated field or one that's declining, no one is going to want a fresh employee with no real world experience because they have a huge pool of veterans to pull from. That's on you.
When I was 18 I argued with my parents for weeks about not going to college (I wanted to join the army so I could get the government to pay for my education, have a job, while serving my country) after I got chronic pancreatitis and the army wouldn't take me, (didn't make it past the medical physical), I was out if ideas but still didn't want the debt. My parents thought I was just being lazy. 50k in debt later my dad apologized to me for forcing me to go to college. I'm 28 the best job I got pays 16$ an hour, which I work while doing my masters part time. I know friends from highschool who make almost twice as much driving a truck, or just working up their corporate ladders from entry level positions. We really underestimate experience in our society. It's just as valuable, and you get paid to get it. Ya, I'm happy to be educated, I had some great experiences, learned a new language, lived abroad for 2 years after college working as an English teacher in Asia (which adjusted for cost of living is the most money I ever made), overall I could have done this all independently for WAY less. So if your kids don't want to go to college, don't assume it's cause they are lazy and hate school right away. Find out why they don't want to go. I wasn't lazy, but I knew the loans were not worth the piece if paper I got. My dad was the first to go to college in our family, but he was able to pay off his loans with a summer job, you can't do that today. I'm 3 classes from my MS now, and luckily I had the good sense to do community college during the summer to take as many transfer credits as possible, in combination with a swimming and academic scholarship for 2 years of regular undergrad, college is still only barely affordable. The crazy thing is my bachelor's degree cost 3x my Masters degree.
It's important to know that this is anecdote, my friends who didn't go to college all work minimum wage jobs and I make twice the national average. College works out more than it doesn't, even with the hellscape of loans Oh yeah I'm never going to pay my loans off, they're basically just a bill that comes out of my check like health insurance, forever
If you where to do the army for 4 years it still might not be able to actually cover everything when you get out. Sucks that happened though but it's good that you're in better shape now.
Fun part: if you're drafted to fight in a war while in the army, there's a chance that you'll die, and then you won't have to worry about loans and other bullshit this modern society of ours has. So don't hate people who rejoice over the death of others, because chances are they don't really hate them, they're just very happy for them.
To meter this opinion, there is one thing that is assumed that changes DRAMATICALLY the need to go to college, and that is opportunity. I would love to work my way up a corporate ladder, prove to people my worth, and work hard to end up at a great place in life. That being the case my area is so over-blown with non-skilled workers that I will never see that day. When there is competition for the lowest position available, the chance of getting a job with growth opportunities without having close connections with someone by sheer luck? Just about impossible. It took me about 6 years just to land a job that TECHNICALLY counts as accounting experience to eek my way into the lowest rung of an office position, and it will take me another 2 years at a job that pays close to the minimum in my region before I would even be considered still. If I had had the money or circumstances that allowed me to go to college before now I DEFINITELY would have, even despite the debt, because in the long term I wouldn't still be looking at another 4-5 years to be able to negotiate a salary I'm even a little happy with if I had. Now, all of that is my personal circumstance and reflective of my region that, while not unique, isn't going to be the case for everyone. My personal advice though is that you shouldn't go to college until you determine that you NEED to go to college to get where you want to be in life. If opportunities exist that might get you there without it, then try them out first. They likely aren't going to stick you with a lifetime of debt, and you can always try College out later if it's more beneficial to you.
Unfortunately college loans have been getting bigger and not too long ago college was deemed as necessary thing for almost anything. They are in fact more important than they were before, but it’s important to note that it’s not the best thing for everybody. It’s a very risky thing to go to college when you are unsure what you want to do and unfortunately most people don’t know. Not to mention a lot of people don’t realize the necessity of some college courses. There are jobs in engineering that pay well enough to end student debt and can be legitimately helpful to have degrees in, but then there’s stuff like English writing. People tend to ignore that degrees can be helpful in some circumstances, but there are a lot of areas of study where college probably isn’t the best option.
you can't kill me if I am already dead! but who is stupider? the man trying to kill himself? or the person trying to kill the person trying to kill themselves?
Unfortunately so many people still don't see how inescapable taking the student loan route can be when they're blinded by the appeal of a prestigious university. So, though the facts should be common knowledge, high school seniors in the US are still either ignorant or "forget" these potential consequences when it's their time.
What makes it extra insane is they're 18 year old kids? How is a kid barely out of high school supposed to make a decision like this that will effect the rest of their lives? It's truly scummy. It's basically a government backed scam.
How college got so evil: liberal snowflakes took over and tried to ruin everything that they deem politically incorrect, which is pretty much everything to do with white straight men, or Christianity, or European traditions. If you want your kids to grow up right, never send a kid to college.
Ben Richards I don't know. Ask the libtarded transsexuals that popped up out of nowhere in the past two years what it's like to be princesses. Where was this problem with gender fluid children being bullied 100 years ago? Or 10 years ago? Having an interesting name for something doesn't just make it Scientific fact. But you will never hear Adam ruin that.
Empathy Lessons And the reason why cars cost so much, and why homes cost so much, and why phone prices are at nearly 1000 for phones marketed to an "average" user. Financing should just be straight up illegal. It causes prices to go up, then politicians argue about how to pay the higher prices, without thinking about how it got so fucking expensive.
smokyp3nguin No because due to the fact that government backs up student loans and promises to pay all it to the college the colleges have no reason to keep prices low. If government is paying for it out of a seemingly infinite pot then why keep prices down?
Adequate Panda "If government is paying for it out of a seemingly infinite pot then why keep prices down?" Because you have empathy for other human beings and want to contribute to the betterment of society rather than leech off the system at the expense of impoverished young adults. They made a choice to exploit people. You can't burglarize someone's home and then tell them it was their fault for having breakable windows. You still broke the window. You made the choice.
smokyp3nguin That's a lovely idea but it's not how the world works. If the cost to you will be backed up forever you have no monetary incentive in keeping costs down. For example if government started offering loans to cover all of the cost of the car or a house you would expect the same price hike to happen as you are at a tangible disadvantage if you dont do it and the debts are now owable to the federal government.
I always amazes me when people say they were tricked into going to college and getting loans. Surely high school math classes would tell you how compounding interest works and research papers would have taught you how to estimate expected salaries for your major.
@@saiyjin98 Sorry, but those chapters which teach you how to calculate money were exactly what I hated because I found it very confusing. I'm not the type to haggle for price or bargain. You tell me a price, if it's anywhere near reasonable, I'll pay.
@@mercentperrault I guess you should hire a financial planner to do the math for you then. It's really important to use math to plan for your future or you may find out too late that you can't retire.
@@saiyjin98 High school literally teaches you nothing about personal finance or how loans and debt work. Also just to get an entry level job now you need a bachelors degree.
B T I agree with your point, but want to add that corporations are supposed to be greedy. That’s why they exist. The government is the enabler here and therefore the villain in the story. Same goes for the government and the fed which enabled the housing crisis.
You’re half right. Because the government cut education spending, public colleges and universities responded by raising tuition rates forcing kids to take out more private loans.
Mystic Shadow OK sorry I misscalculated I forgot it said $42 million not not $42,000. What I should have said was $31,000 per person, but instead of insulting me you should have just corrected me. That is if you even knew the answer or did you just guess I had the wrong answer and you couldn't figure out the right one yourself.
Hey Adam you also forgot that multiple colleges including state colleges and especially ITT technical institute loved illegally or unknowingly taking out loans on behalf of their students they weren't informed of. So on top of your regular tuition you may randomly end up owing additional $50,000 for nothing. And as it's student loan debt you can't get rid of it even if it's fraudulent.
here in Australia i was paid to get my mechanic qualification. The government throws money at people getting trades its awesome. Australia has much better government oversight and less "free market" stuff.
@Santiago Colla "supply and demand"?! Here in Germany, when more people _demand_ an university degree in any specific field than we can reasonably offer, we ask for especially good grades instead of rising the prices. This way.. smart/hard working people can study instead of rich ones. Hmm.. maybe that's the reason you rarely hear "Oh, that car is a great piece of American engineering"
America has two kinds of loans: public and private (sallie mae). Sallie Mae offers no protections and will destroy your life. Public loans have a bunch of programs to pay them off easier - I have income based repayment, I make about 60k a year and pay $230 a month on my federal loans. It's not so bad. Oh the interest is about $250 a month, so I'll be paying forever, but whatcha gonna do - nobody cares or they woulda voted for Bernie Sanders
Forgot to mention how when giving these loans to people who couldn't afford them, they basically let colleges charge however much they wanted. Resulting in gross overspending on unnecessary facilities and the cost of college to skyrocket.
Both my parents are still paying off their student loans, they got them when they were around 20 and now they're reaching 50. Our lives are a constant struggle and there marriage is getting rough. The whole student loan idea was good until they started to take advantage of us. I hope to get a scholarship, but I know I have to work my ass off if I want one.
Vynnyal Wower yeah the reason why the middle class and the bottom class stays lower is because of loans for wants instead obtaining loans for things that can make u money. Picture this a mom with a salary of 100,000 per yr. she buys a house with her husband and 2 kids. She pays off her house but than she wants a more luxurious life style so she buys a new house that she has to put a loan on. But oh her car is 6 yrs old outdated she puts another loan on a new car. She pays off her new house and car 15 yrs later. Then she gets a raise and decides she wants more.Thats the thing with people they always want more things that will provide no extra income for them but yet they still put them selves in debt and blames the government. REMEMBER PEOPLE GET LOANS FOR THINGS THAT WILL GET U MONEY INSTEAD OF THINGS THAT WILL SIT IN UR DRIVEWAY. Thats the reason why the rich get richer they are financially smart
Soooo... if a college education is supposedly necessary to get a job (at least a good one) then why hasn't the public school system upped it's game to meet this new standard?
Daniel Smerdel they have.... they now offer early college education... so that when students graduate, they already have an associates degree and this education is offered as a free alternative... this shortens the time they with spend at a university and possibly lower their chances of needing a loan
The liberal unions took over build there nest in your pocket . You pay for the life style the lazy liberal. Its like vacation time 5 months a year with out work. No weekends short work days. Great retirement & Ins. All you have to do is show up. So they don't learn nothing who cares just pass them. Will take your dues out of your paycheck.
Student loans are a choice, and you can work at a minimum wage job to pay off your tuition at a community college to get your associate’s, or you can go to an expensive ass private college for four years by taking out loans with interest rates up the wahzoo.
That's why I'm going to a community college and why I took 2 1/2 dual credit classes in high school. I'll still have to pay a lot of tuition (especially once i transfer to a university) but sometimes the little things help. Also apply for scholarships and take a summer job if possible. And stay close to home so you don't have to move away from your parents, therefore not have to pay for dorms and all of that. And don't take liberal arts unless you're going into teaching liberal arts. And if you're into theater, art, or music, take all of those classes in high school instead of spending thousands of dollars on going to an art school. It's not like you have to have a degree in art to publish your work or something, right?

how does your extremely racist answer have anything to do with college fees? I am German myself and my personal Life hasn't been affected in any negative way by Refugees. It has, however, been affected by constantly hearing false and uninformed "arguments" why we should all fear for our lives. There is even a Village in Saxony (the part of Germany with the most voters for the racist AfD Party) where far right protests were held before some refugees were brought there in 2015. The mayor was interviewed a few months ago and he had to admit that none of their fears has become a reality. Im not dellusional, there are some criminals in the millions of people, but the number of neo nazi violent crimes is far higher. And at least I don't have to fear to get shot on a concert.
Here's an advice: Go to community college for two years. You might not have to pay a dime. In that time get a part time job, save your money and maybe pay off a used car. You can transfer all your credits to a 4 year University, after two years. You already saved 30k, and there are way more advantages depending on your situation.
I did all that and wasn't able to save anything from my 8/hr part time job because I was paying other bills, including my used car (which I did eventually pay off), and now I have a BA and MFA and $80K in debt!
Do it! I am about to graduate with a general associates and transfer to ETSU. I have 28k saved + paid off truck worth maybe 5k now. I might be able to get through college without any debt
You forgot the *** ***2 year transfer only valid if you're getting a 3.8 or higher in those two years or if that community college isn't overflowing with people. I have friends still waiting for that sweet, sweet transfer after close to a decade later. Between life and work, it gets harder and harder to make school a priority
Even here in Tanzania (East Africa) we have: Public health care available for $35 a year (family plans are cheaper), Free public primary & secondary education in public schools, And we have merit-based loans for College/University. Our GDP is just $47 billion and USA's is like $19 trillion. Why do you think is the cause? Military spending?
Many kids aren't even 18 when they start university. If you're born from sept-dec, you usually START university at 17 (the year after you graduated high school), meaning that you weren't even a legal adult before you signed yourself up for all that debt
Some european: Laughs way harder coz the country with the most gun violent is America. So chances of getting killed in America is way higher than in EU. My college fee for 1 year: 100 euro's
Have you noticed each time a basic human need in America is privatized 'to increase competition and hence better service for lower prices' it ends up with service (of a basic human NEED) being denied unless you pay through your nose? In any other civilized country this would be considered extortion, but in America it's marketed as 'freedom.'
Actually Sabrina makes a good point. This higher education isn't actually needed and it isn't for everybody but schools, teachers, parents, etc. They all shove the idea that higher education is needed down everybody's throats. They say that if you don't go to college, you'll be a failure. Which is not true in the slightest.
I mean, sure, it's helpful. But also, you don't necessarily need college to do it either. I'm in the military currently, and even if I don't go to college (which I probably won't), if I continue with my line of work in the civilian world, then I'll easily be able to make plenty above the poverty line, probably more than most who will take on tens of thousands of dollars of student debt. There are always workarounds if you're smart enough to figure them out.
Psychedelic hallucinogenic relic of reality Hey! No wait a minute! I'm smoking whole heartedly. Lol but seriously it's stupid expensive. I was going to be a psych major but I'm going for mechanical engineering because of the student loans. It's no joke, make sure you get a degree cause dreams usually don't put food on the table
mdb45424 Exactly. Took 6 years, but I had far less debt than all my peers who didn't work. I expect things are even worse for kids now, 10 years later.
In my opinion, money doesn't matter if you're in the top 5% and can get into a great college. If you get accepted into a really well known and competitive college, then go there. If you pick the right majors and things that you enjoy, then you can pay off the loan and be successful. Also don't be lazy once you get into college, you always have to be proactive.
Thats retarded. Choices should always be college degree or go to employment to gain that experience. Online doesn't have better quality education at all...suggesting that is sad.
Online education is actually pretty good these days. There's plenty of ways to learn a field you are interested in all for free. There was this one website where random professionals can make a course and you can watch any amount of them for like $10/month. And there's hundreds or thousands of videos. It's basically a Netflix but for learning. I unfortunately forget the name though. But decide what you want to do first and choose the best option for you. Can't go wrong with welding.
I have a staff member that has a masters in computer science and a MBA in international business, she owes over 300k in loans (even w/her GI bill), and she can’t get a job anywhere in either field because she owes too much.
This is why I’m glad my parents instilled a knowledge of financial stability. Graduated from college five years ago with 20k in debt. Five years later, I have 3k left.
This is a video that old curmudgeons need to see - you know the type of individual who thinks this generation consists of a bunch of "whiners". Previous generations love to wax on and on about how they "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps", and worked hard and "paid their own way through college". The insinuation of all this boasting is that this generation is just indolent in comparison to theirs, and this generation just wants handouts. Nothing could be further from the truth. All one has to do is compare the average income of middle class familes in the 80s and 90s, in relation to how much an average university cost in the 80s and 90s, and then compare the average income of a family today and the average cost of college tuition today. In short, the cost of an average college tuition has far outpaced average household income, thus making the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" admonishment misguided. If, for example, you were to compare the tuition cost of my old alma mater, when I graduated, to what my alma mater charges now, the tuition has gone up by 10 fold - and that is within a span of 17 years.
Drake Santiago and the reason the tuition rate has increased is because the of the gov giving away grants to any person with a pulse. It's artificial demand that is to blame, not bankers.
You actually argued against your initial point. Pulling yourself up by your boot straps in 2017 doesn't mean paying for your own college. It means figuring out if that is the correct path for you. It means possibly not going to college and just getting a job that is economically viable. Paying for your own college is like saying I'm going to save money and buy my own home without a loan. It's a ridiculous statement because it's not viable in this crazy out of control world. We have a government that doesn't act in the interests of it's people, who only tackle one side of an issue (at best). It then protects bad business from it's own failures and says it's helping people. We have a culture of people who think the only good way to make money is sign away 30 years of their life so people can follow degrees they think are "cool" but not economically viable. This video just blames capitalism for the huge cost of loans and blames none of the other responsible parties. So, the video isn't for "old curmudgeons", it's to tell today's youth their anger is justified, which it's not actually.
"Paying for your own college is like saying I'm going to save money and buy my own home without a loan. It's a ridiculous statement because it's not viable in this crazy out of control world." Bullshit. I am currently buying a home without a loan using money I earned from a great job I didn't need "higher education" for. You're right about the rest of it though.
Fun fact: in the UK loans to go to university are payed back in increments after you earn over s certain amount AND if you don't pay it back in 30 years it gets wiped No one pays off their loans for uni IT'S GREAT

If by entry level job, you mean working as a crew member at McDonalds, it's not hard at all. Just putting together a half-decent student resume and not blowing an interview will land you a position at a fast-food restaurant, and from there, it's just climbing a ladder. Anyone can be qualified for an entry level job. They just have to have the right mentality and present themselves well.
I presume he means an entry level job in a certain line of work. I hardly doubt you can become a lawyer by starting out at McDonalds (even with the right degree).
Look into attending a Community College or Trade School and fill out a FAFSA to see what grants and scholarships you might be eligible for as neither have to be payed back.
Various suggestions, organized by category. If you want to get through college without worrying about your debt until afterward, you need to do things while you are in school that will help you acquire a job that pays well enough to pay the loan off on time: - Get a part time job for summers, alternate working and school, or volunteer. Even if you don't make enough to do anything substantial with the income, you will make contacts, get experience, and build your resume. - Get engaged with companies you might be interested in later, such as at job fairs, industry conferences, and LinkedIn. - Work on projects related to the industry you want to be in. For example, I work in software development, so part of my portfolio is mini pet projects that I do in my spare time. If you want to minimize the amount of loans you take out: - Alternate school with a job. Some people can work a full job and go to college at the same time, some can't. You will have to figure out what works for you. I recommend trying to alternate first, because you're much less likely to fail that way, and it will give you more time to adjust to the difference between college and high school. You can also make more money if you are working full time, even if it is a 6 month contract or temporary job. - Work on scholarships, even if they are small. Do short contract work for little projects if you can and put the money directly toward your classes and books so you don't have to take loans out for them. - Find alternate sources of resources, such as books, your residence, etc. Minimize your cost of living. Ask your parents for help with this, use Google, and talk with other people with similar preferences to your own. - Be very careful about who you take loans from and the details of the loans. If you don't understand what the loan details mean, ASK. Don't agree to anything you don't understand, ever. Don't assume your parents understand either. If you have an account with a credit union, talk with them and they will likely be able to give you sound, objective advice. Plan for problems: - Don't expect to have solid employment at the salary you desire. This probably sounds weird, but realistically you will likely have various gaps in employment after you graduate. Talk to your parents about this, and make a plan for what you will do if you need their help with a payment or two. - Don't expect things to go the way you think they will. They won't, I promise you. You, or a family member will get sick. Your apartment will flood. Your car will break down. The further ahead you are in any loans you do have, the better. Always pay ahead if you can, but make sure to ask your lender to apply the over-payments to principle, otherwise it will go to interest in most cases. Even if you are just paying $30 extra each month, it adds up and will give you a bit of breathing room when something happens. It also helps establish you as serious about paying off the loan to the lender, and they may be more likely to cooperate with you if you need to delay a payment, or need another loan later. Consider work first, school later: Work for a year or two before going to college. You might have a better idea of what you want to major in, and you might have a more solid handle on life in general, too. Really think about all of the different potential arrangements and order of things, and see which one fits you, your resources, and your career goals the best.
It's really easy to not go into debt while in college. Go to a community college for the first 4 semesters. Then move to a state college. Get a job. Save money for each semester. If you haven't saved up enough, skip a semester. Sure, you'll be 27 when you graduate. But then when you get your higher paying job from your degree, you'll be debt free. Sounds like a good trade off to me.

I could be wrong but that sounds like a horrible idea. Those who do well and contribute have to pay back. Those who do bad and don't put in also don't have to pay back.
That's stupid, everybody probably asks their employers not to promote them until the 10 year period is up (unless they would get more then interest rates)
If it makes you students feel any better, Cary Katz, who founded the College Loan Corporation, used the money students paid him in interest to become a professional poker player. The company was the seventh largest student loan company in the United States providing $19 billion in loans. Katz then continued playing professional poker with the money he made from your student loans. Winning over 18 million dollars since 2005.
Cant drink alcohol drinks at age 18 (only till 21) but can sign a paper that can put you in a huge debt for the rest of your life and cant be avoided even by bankrupcy...also can go to war at 18! WHAT A COUNTRY MAN!
He said garnish up to 15% of wages. Try 30% of my check gone every week. Such a scam for a piece of paper that don't mean shit. Up like if you have 10k or more student loan debt. I'm at 100k and climbing.
I still play along with 300 people in my whatsapp that I met. Its not that people don't play, its that the people that stopped playing encouraged the internet to say everyone quit.
So here's what you do. You take out credit cards. You pay off your student loans with those credit cards. COMPLETELY. Then you file bankruptcy. It's no longer student loans and it's done. Your credit score takes a plummet but you'll survive at least.
I would talk to a bankruptcy attorney first. Explain the plan and then pay everything with your debit card. It's going to go majorly red but then filing for bankruptcy afterwards should give you something to work with.
And here I live in a country with 32-35% tax on my salary to pay for healthcare, infrastructure, defence, and education, with no attendance cost to attend any school, collage, or university... and I happily continue to pay my taxes so my fellow countrymen will be educated and healthy.
When the most comforting thought you have after college is, "Well, at least if I die my debt will die with me," you have only just begun to tap into what form modern slavery has taken.
I'm honestly glad I have a good financial aid officer. I am going to college in the fall and the first thing she told me after they went through my FAFSA was "I will only reccomend you to get student loans if I feel like you need one. And by the looks of it, you dont need one. Not until years down the line." My cousins all told me about loan stories when they were in college so I'm glad I wasnt pressured into getting one by my person.
Gangstabob716 smart! People like u should make blogs or videos on how to manage money and deal with college. It's highly desired, cuz lots of idiots come out of school and get easily tricked into doing stupid shit. Unprepared gullible people vetted scamed left and right.
thanks man, i had no desire to take out a loan since i know id be paying interest for like the next decade. Its all about knowing what you're getting into and careful budgeting for a few years. After that, you can spend on whatever you like (house, car etc)
Spagin but you do pay for school it is just in the form of high taxes. Professors and buildings cost money. The problem is if scholol doesn't costing you anything you have little incentive to graduate or go into your field.
I didn't go to college. Didn't want to go in debt. Got a union job. Pays well. Bought and paid for 5 cars (owned one at a time) and a house. Paid them off early. Live debt free today and ready to retire at 55. Glad I stayed out of that mess.
Your comment sounds very inspiring. Im about to go to college next year, but I hate it, I just hate being there, in the classroom, the smugness of the students, the professors who think are gods above all, and all the shitshow with the loans, it's just not an environment I'd like to spend another 4 years in.
Even without union pay the trades (nearly all of them) are in high demand and require very little school (many will pay for you to learn) and many times pay more then college degree jobs while being way more employable.
Nintendo did not do anything for the game.. sorry niantic rather. Poor management for a poor game that was not worth it being called Pokémon. If at least the fights would have been classic Pokémon battles
Whell it's much more complicated than that. Loans get more expensive because college is more expensive. And government was only losing money when it loaned out so when it was privatized it started to make more but without a competitor it became a monopoly. Not to mention government handouts to universities that prioritize more spending cause an increases to intuition. If we cut goverment funding and creat a competitive enviroment for colleges we can cut tuition by massive amounts.
Why is college more expensive? Why can other countries with less money afford to pay for college but we can't? Why do businesses expect people to pay for job training before they start working with no guarantee of employment? Why do people think that for profit enterprise is rational, why do people who play ball games make millions of dollars but teachers can't afford to live in the neighborhoods they teach in? Why are banks allowed to engage in fractional reserve lending? Why do they also get to keep so much of the profit the make from loaning out other people's money? Why do people keep saying we privatize things to make them competitive when corporations have an established record of being of being horrible and only interested in profit? They dont compete to save customers money they compete to make as much money as possible and then shaft their employees and not pay taxes, they do spend money on lobbying though.

College works out more than it doesn't, even with the hellscape of loans
Oh yeah I'm never going to pay my loans off, they're basically just a bill that comes out of my check like health insurance, forever

No, colleges are the reason colleges charge ridiculous prices.
smokyp3nguin No because due to the fact that government backs up student loans and promises to pay all it to the college the colleges have no reason to keep prices low. If government is paying for it out of a seemingly infinite pot then why keep prices down?
Adequate Panda "If government is paying for it out of a seemingly infinite pot then why keep prices down?"
Because you have empathy for other human beings and want to contribute to the betterment of society rather than leech off the system at the expense of impoverished young adults.
Being in debt your whole life for something 12 years of school should have taught you.
I always amazes me when people say they were tricked into going to college and getting loans. Surely high school math classes would tell you how compounding interest works and research papers would have taught you how to estimate expected salaries for your major.
They do it’s just that the people who don’t take the risks into account and strategise their decisions are the ones who get “tricked”

Here in Germany, when more people _demand_ an university degree in any specific field than we can reasonably offer, we ask for especially good grades instead of rising the prices. This way.. smart/hard working people can study instead of rich ones.

how does your extremely racist answer have anything to do with college fees?

You already saved 30k, and there are way more advantages depending on your situation.
zozo coco Agreed. That saves a lot of money. You don't need university education for an associate's degree.
That doesn't work. I tried.
You forgot the ***
***2 year transfer only valid if you're getting a 3.8 or higher in those two years or if that community college isn't overflowing with people.
I have friends still waiting for that sweet, sweet transfer after close to a decade later. Between life and work, it gets harder and harder to make school a priority
Even here in Tanzania (East Africa) we have:
Public health care available for $35 a year (family plans are cheaper),
Free public primary & secondary education in public schools,
And we have merit-based loans for College/University.

Have you noticed each time a basic human need in America is privatized 'to increase competition and hence better service for lower prices' it ends up with service (of a basic human NEED) being denied unless you pay through your nose? In any other civilized country this would be considered extortion, but in America it's marketed as 'freedom.'
your free to be extorted lol
yeah but it's almost like higher education isn't a basic human need
Sabrina Schott it is if you want to live above the poverty line and make more than minimum wage
What has me worried, is how much longer can this country last when so much corruption and greed are slowly eating away at America's people?
I don't know if I want to go to college...

I was going to be a psych major but I'm going for mechanical engineering because of the student loans. It's no joke, make sure you get a degree cause dreams usually don't put food on the table
a community college is much cheaper. if you take your time and have a job you wont need to take a loan.
mdb45424 Exactly.
So what should I do then if I don't go to college?

Online education is actually pretty good these days. There's plenty of ways to learn a field you are interested in all for free. There was this one website where random professionals can make a course and you can watch any amount of them for like $10/month. And there's hundreds or thousands of videos. FINALLY COLLEGE HUMOR POSTS SOMETHING ABOUT COLLEGE
Deane Marks, I completely agree.
It's a ridiculous statement because it's not viable in this crazy out of control world."
Bullshit. I am currently buying a home without a loan using money I earned from a great job I didn't need "higher education" for.
You're right about the rest of it though.

So *WHAT CAN I DO TO COUNTER THAT*
Look into attending a Community College or Trade School and fill out a FAFSA to see what grants and scholarships you might be eligible for as neither have to be payed back.
Various suggestions, organized by category.
If you want to get through college without worrying about your debt until afterward, you need to do things while you are in school that will help you acquire a job that pays well enough to pay the loan off on time:
- Get a part time job for summers, alternate working and school, or volunteer.
If you want to minimize the amount of loans you take out:
- Alternate school with a job.
Plan for problems:
- Don't expect to have solid employment at the salary you desire.
Consider work first, school later:
Work for a year or two before going to college.

So here's what you do. You take out credit cards. You pay off your student loans with those credit cards. COMPLETELY. Then you file bankruptcy. It's no longer student loans and it's done. Your credit score takes a plummet but you'll survive at least.
Too bad the loan payment website doesn't allow me to pay with a credit card...I have to pay through my debit account.
I would talk to a bankruptcy attorney first. Explain the plan and then pay everything with your debit card. It's going to go majorly red but then filing for bankruptcy afterwards should give you something to work with.
Well it sounds like you have a plan. I wish you tons of luck with it!
