I’m literally befuddled at the level of talent in this woman. She’s an absolute star. And I love the fact she conducts herself as such. What an amazing human being.
That’s as close as it gets to American royalty, except it wasn’t inherited, it was earned. Class act that has given so much back in addition to her music. Love you Dolly and as a 35 year old man, still would.
How many of us can say Ken Burns on PBS brought you here! I can !! Made me like Country Music all over again. Made me Happy! Dolly! You saaaaang & yodeled that song! Yodel YayHeeeeeeeeeehe hehehehehe Yeah !!
I will freely admit his documentary brought me to look up the footage. As the first night's credits rolled and this song/version played, I sat up and was awestruck!! Gives me goosebumps listening to it ever since...
ABSOLUTELY the Ken Burns PBS documentary brought me here. I'm 52 and use to HATE country music with a passion. Ken Burns and his meticulous research has made me PROUD. God bless Mr. Burns and his painstaking research to make this all possible. "Good morning to you sir!!"
That Yodel! Dolly, you never cease to amaze me with that voice that has laughter, sunshine and ease in it. I came here because of your singing in the closing credits of Ken Burns' film on country music. Much love!
I just watched Ken Burn's documentasry. Yes, it was great. I knew little about Jimmy Rogers but will seek him out more often since. What a talent and trailblazer. P.S. Yodelling ain't easy.
Her bashful expression during the faltered yodel cracked me up! Oh the perils of NOT lip-synching! On the subject of NOT lip-synching: she's amazing in concert. Total, powerful vocal control with the sweetest sound on record.
I'm here from Ken Burns also. I'm a songwriter and I'm embarassed to say I did not know Jimmy Rogers. Well, that's something that won't happen again! I think I need to cover a Jimmy Rogers song, if I can. Dolly has got such a voice on this, and the guitarist is tearing this up!
Had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jimmie Dale Court, Jimmie Rogers's grandson before he also passed. A very talented musician who relished his background and musical roots, Jimmie Dales carried on his grandfather's love of music, performance and song writing and he played at the various annual Jimmie Rogers festivals across the country and at the Kerrville Folk Festival here in Texas. I remember one time out at his Bee Creek studio while the band was rehearsing I was dancing with one of the musicians girlfriends on the basketball half court next to the studio and got a little too frisky and she farted on my hand. Only in Texas. That's true story.
she was actually born in cuba and smuggled to miami as a baba. i have the evidence. the journey was paid for in diamonds. rare austrian squirrel diamonds.
When I was a little black kid growing up in Philly, I lovvveeddd Hee Haw! Especially because they would sing these type of songs! Dolly i think was too big to be on Hee Haw by the time i started watching in the late 70s, I always wished she'd do thesr type of songs... So this is amazing!! If u haven't watched Country Music by Ken Burns, you're missing maybe the top 3 documentaries of all time! I don't even regularly listen to Country, and I loved every second of it!! And Dolly was hella cute, goodness lol
Steve Phil2010 I really miss the ‘70’s for that reason. The ‘60’s too. I was a little white kid in Australia, but back then colour didn’t matter, it was all about the music. And as a musician I owe sooo much to brilliant black artists, but back in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s we all worked together, and appreciated each other’s talents. I do miss that.
I am a country girl in japan. 😂and i love dolly! i wish i could sing like her. I love her coz she smiles like sun itself.! shinning always! Her blight smile makes me smile always! I can smile like her but can't sing like her. . yet. ! but i wanna try!
I would like to thank Country Music PBS and Ken Burns for introducing me to this and many other great songs. It's a wonderful documentary about country music I highly recommend. Dolly Parton is a national treasure.
Arthur Warnock Thanks!! I didn’t know anything about the documentary! Just LOVE Dolly’s music. Grew up watching these shows but didn’t really appreciate the amazing talent!
I've heard a lot of ppl sing this song, some of the most well known and respected ppl in the music business...but in MY opinion...NO ONE can sing this song like Dolly...she just NAILS it every time!
I think Dolly Parton is one of the most important women in the modern music era. Strong, beautiful, talented and honest. Hard to find those qualities these days. She is really underrated if you look at the span of her career and level of influence.
Hey Samm1909, you can't go wrong with the other renditions. The original works for sure, but Ms. Parton feminine touch and her flair does it for me personally. It's all a matter of what does it for the individual ear. They're all good and lyrics take you back to a time when folk worked and hard. Thanks again!
I watched the ‘Porter Waggoner Show’ every weekend with my grandparents in South Texas. I saw this live, I’m sure. Dolly was way more talented than he was. Incredible.
When I was in Elementary School, I rode the bus to school this song was broadcasted by the local country music radio station on the radio and the kids went crazy over Dolly Parton's singing voice.
Thank you Ken Burns! I’ve always loved Dolly, but I’m more familiar with her pop songs than the real country tunes. This is just great, and I really enjoyed learning more about the genre.
It was too late. Voting ballots had already been mailed out. So when she was voted in, Dolly graciously accepted. She had thought only rock stars were members. Once Dolly was told there were members who weren't rock either, it made her see the issue differently. Her friends Brenda Lee and Wanda Jackson were already members.
She had a powerful voice to go along with that genuine personality. One of the most likeable and relatable singers/songwriters/performers in country/popular music history.
I'm feeling very emotional right now, please forgive. I was raised in a household where classical was king. My father was an amazing classical pianist. We listened to Opera every Saturday....lol hated it with a passion but I always felt people who were 'classically trained' were superior, that was my upbringing. NOT SO. Music is music, no matter the vehicle, the instrument or the upbringing. When it's played, sung and performed from the soul, it's heaven sent.
This is my favorite version of the song. But it is hard to NOT like anything Dolly sings. From this song to I Will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors, Hard Candy Christmas, and Jolene.
I saw an interview with her, where she never thought she was pretty enough. God, is she adorable here. Look at the joy in her smile when she sings. Just beautiful.
Thank you Ken Burns for "Country Music" and introducing this 40s something guy covered in tattoos and that listens to hardcore punk to all this wonderful music encompasing Dolly's cover of Jimmie Rogers "Mule Skinner Blues". Damn I love this stuff!
Thanks to PBS I saw a fantastic documentary on the Carter Family and also the author of this song and how these songs came about- fantastic. Man was I surprised to see this version. Dolly- a living gift to the world.

as someone who is classically trained Im gonna say it GODDAMED that woman has technique ... WOW and a REAL pretty natural voice ... i aint no natural beauty like that voice i had to make mine
She is a real down to earth person and loves and respects all her fans. I have never been to any of her concerts. You were very fortunate to have spent so much time talking with her. Congratulations and thanks for your comment.
Had forgotten about this song until Ken Burns reminded me. Takes me back to my childhood. If you have not watched the PBS Ken Burns documentary on Country Music, I recommend you do. And if you have I recommend you watch his documentary on Jazz. You will fall in love with both genres plus learn so much American history.
I was looking for "Muleskinner Blues" by The Cramps, and stumbled across this version by Dolly instead. Now I can't get her version out my head. Not much of a country fan, but can appreciate anyone who can belt out a tune like she can!
I've liked this song for over 60 years but had never heard Dolly sing it. My new favorite! I started wondering what exactly the title meant, so I finally looked it up. So glad to find that it means mule driver, and nothing bad happens to the mule. Whew.
This woman is just ......well heck ....seeing her .....hearing her ....just saying her name puts happy pep in the steps of my heart ! 😊😍🤗.....how does she do that ? NATURALLY , of course That's how 😁. 😀🌹💖💖💖
"Mule Skinner Blues" is a country music classic, and a difficult song to sing i.e, hitting and sustaining the notes, the syncopation and the breath control required. Dolly does it justice!
I’m literally befuddled at the level of talent in this woman. She’s an absolute star. And I love the fact she conducts herself as such. What an amazing human being.
If you check out the word "star" in a dictionary, there should be a picture of Miss Parton.
Me too! Ridiculous talent...just natural born and stunning in every way
A little hard on the eyes tho
That’s as close as it gets to American royalty, except it wasn’t inherited, it was earned. Class act that has given so much back in addition to her music. Love you Dolly and as a 35 year old man, still would.
I just came acroos this on the Ken Burns County Music series...put a big smile on my face!!
Me too. My family used to sing this in the early 80's. They've all passed on now so this is a sentimental song for me ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I’m with you! The program was superb and Dolly Parton gave me chills singing Mule Skinner Blues.
Same! I can't get over how good so much of this music is and the people so bright and genuine.

LOL....I'm doing the exact same!! Am just amazed and in awe!!
Same here! Can’t go wrong with Dolly or Ken Burns specials.
I just watched Ken Burn's documentasry. Yes, it was great. I knew little about Jimmy Rogers but will seek him out more often since. What a talent and trailblazer.
P.S. Yodelling ain't easy.
+1
If I put that smile next a solar panel, our energy crisis will be solved
She is like the sunshine and goodness of God's spirit condensed into a petite woman. I love her so much
SOOOOO right Wissam! Can only she's as nice and sweet in private than she is on the outside!!!!!
Right !! I'm young bit this woman is absolute gold ✨
Good 1...
Amen!!!!!!!!!!!
What a difficult song to sing and she makes it look effortless! A tremendous talent and a beautiful soul!
A voice as smooth as honey, laughter that dances in your ears, and a smile that could melt an iceberg; she is incredible!
She's the whole package, looks, talent, and as beautiful inside as out.
They don't make em that anymore that's for sure ☺️
Her bashful expression during the faltered yodel cracked me up! Oh the perils of NOT lip-synching! On the subject of NOT lip-synching: she's amazing in concert. Total, powerful vocal control with the sweetest sound on record.
I never realized how much I liked country music until I watched Ken Burns new documentary. And Jimmie Rogers was deep. Long live Jimmie Rogers.
I've been watching too, really enjoy it
That's what great about America. How all people came together to create beauty. Jazz rhythm and blues folk bluegrass = country.
I loved it too, at least until the Elvis segment where they omitted the fact that he owed his success to Otis Blackwell!
Had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jimmie Dale Court, Jimmie Rogers's grandson before he also passed. hey hey 0:35 -I think the *laugh* is part of a *yodel* hee hee hee hee hee hee
That woman really has a beautiful voice.
This is why she is the queen of Tenessese. long live Miss Dolly.

The best Mule Skinner Blues done by Rhonda Vincent
@@garysorenson7138 great version but I much prefer the tony rice one
Don't hate me but who's Ken burns?
She's unspeakably great. The studio version of this song has to be one of the best in recorded music history, in any genre.

A mule?

Born natural. Gifted. All she has to do is just turn up and start singing and what follows is magic.
There's a reason She's a legend. I remember seeing this at My grandparent's house when it aired.
LOVE Dolly ! ! !
Thank you. Dolly is definitely a legend.
There's never going to be another DOLLY !!!!.I JUST LOVE HER. She is the sweetest woman I know.
Never my style of music but Dolly is tremendous. What a national - no, international treasure.
The song she's singing is Canadian, so appropriate
Hot Damn! Almost makes me wish I was a mule! Dolly is one of a kind...never imitated, never duplicated.
😂 Best comment! I'm a straight female, and have a total crush on Dolly. How can you not?
Always makes me feel like smiling and my feet tapping
Hello how are you doing today 😊😊
I think Dolly Parton is one of the most important women in the modern music era. Strong, beautiful, talented and honest. Hard to find those qualities these days. She is really underrated if you look at the span of her career and level of influence.
This song is scorching hot - Dolly rips this song like she owns it. Stunning!
That yodel sends chills up the spine. Dolly is a national treasure.
This is my favorite version of Mule Skinner Blues
Thanks for watching my video and also your comment. Dolly nails it pretty good.

I was looking for another version and this one popped up. Almost skipped over it, but glad I didn’t. What a voice.
She always makes it look so easy, so effortless. Amazing.
what a great song. Thats real country music. Everybody in country music should sing Jimmi Rogers songs.
A lot of them have.
It just don’t get much better than that.
I agree 100%. She makes it seem so natural and easy. She is a great talent.
She is one vibrant life.
A thing of the past. A REAL singer and performer. Almost forgot what they looked like.

They tried to induct her into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. She didn't think she'd earned that honor, and politely declined. INTEGRITY.
Ken Burns' Country Music was awesome! I've been a country music fan all my life and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ken Burns is a very gifted documentarist!
Hey how are you doing doing…?
one of the best live performances ive ever seen
I dont know many singers who could pull this song off as well as she does!
Was Dolly actually in an affair

I heard the Bill Monroe version recently. It was good, but you. Know what it needed? More Dolly.
Dolly does this song proud! And with a great big beautiful smile, just like she does everything :)
Kind of a country music hater, but there are some shining exceptions and Dolly is definitely one of them
First Dolly song I ever heard, back in 1978. I'll always appreciate it
I remember watching this with my mom and grandmother when it originally aired. Brings back such good memories. Love Dolly 💖
