This was from a wonderful 1978 TV special "Fifty Years of Country Music", which was co-hosted by Dolly, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell, and which featured nearly every major country music artist from the 1940s through the '70s who was still alive and performing as of '78. I wish they'd release it on DVD. Many veteran artists, including Monroe, Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb and the Carter Family (featuring what may well have been the final TV appearance of Mother Maybelle) appeared alongside then-current artists, and it really was a wonderful time capsule of country music, old and new.
Dolly has a way of being alive in all of her performances. Even if she’s repeating herself, she does it slightly different single time and this keeps it fresh. Each performance is always brand new. She is always in the moment, that’s what makes her timeless.
Your dad had a good ear (and eye)... That was one of the best videos I've ever seen. Dolly is like a bottle of champagne and Bill Monroe's voice is unreal.
Cheers then! Love the music and the people, yes I'm from Quebec, come and visit sometime I'll buy you a drink if you don't throw any bottles at me and talk about that fantastic bluegrass music! And we've been here as long as you have, check out Louisiana Cajun and Creol music if you have the time :)
I love how respectful Dolly is when singing duets. She tones her voice down a bit to harmonize with her partner. Her solo on this is a bit bigger. Bill Monroe is an icon, but Dolly seems to get him to crack a hint of a smile.
I love this classic. My grandma used to have cable and I'd love to visit so I could watch like 4 Dolly shows in a row from this era. It was awesome! She was my favorite then and she's still my favorite now…
Bucket list: Build a Time machine and travel to see Bill Monroe and Dolly at it this venue!! Released on November 9, 1970, by RCA Victor. The album features Parton's biggest hits up to that point, along with a few non-single album tracks. The album included two previously unreleased tracks; the single, "Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel No. 8)", for which Parton earned her first Grammy nomination.
Dude...Jimmie Rodgers wrote that song, and recorded it long before there was a Bill Monroe or Dolly Parton. Without Jimmy Rodgers, this video wouldn't exist!
@@retroeddie but Dolly kills it. Love the yodeling ... especially when she & Bill yodel in unison. Do you think a female mule skinner would be a lady? I should know: "That's no lady, that's my wife!"
Love that he kept in the Good morning shiiiiiiine part. Surprised the cry baby history monitors haven't thrown a fit yet. Best live version of this classic I've heard
👍👌👏 Maaaan! Every time great Dolly Parton laughs I'm completely done! I definitely can't understand why Monroe won't even smile just a little bit! Good grief!
Well, he's smiling more here with Dolly than I've ever seen him before with anyone Else. Bill was REAL serious about most things. He'd make John Lennon look like Steve Martin.
I have been singing my heart out all over the United States since I was knee high to a grass hopper. I loved Dolly since I was 10 years old and my mother gave me a poster from an album she bought with a piece of straw hanging out of her mouth in a barn with Daisy duke shorts on (okay..so MAYBE it wast the MUSIC that got my attention) but as the years went on and life tossed me many curves...I grew to know and love the "HEART" of DOLLY and if you listen to her talk or sing..then you KNOW without a blink that Dolly is the REAL deal. Her spirit dwells within me daily. I just love her. I was framed last year in a Presidential assassination plot by a crazy politician from Tupelo, Ms named James Everette Dutschke. The Feds jumped the gun and arrested me falsely and held me without bond for a week telling me I would never see my children again. I thought, "IF/WHEN I get out of THIS...Surely, Dolly will call me and say "hey let's record a duet together and donate all the money to the WRONGFULLY ACCUSED" in this world" but no call yet. I am KC...I LOVE DOLLY and I approve this message
Bill was know for liking the ladies and the ladies liked Bill. Like Bobby Osborne said when he asked Bill about it and he said”You got to know all the answers boy” I guess he knew.
I agree with John hard to find artists like this anymore. Yodel is almost gone in 2022 on record labels. And the Great MON Bill Monroe is total the best ever in his field, however some have tried thanks to his teaching.
I love both of 'em but Bill Monroe is almost completely immune to Dolly Parton. He doesn't give a shit, he just does what he's gonna do. I couldn't be immune to Dolly Parton now, let alone then. One of the prettiest women ever, singing her tits off (and that's a lot of singin'), on your song, right up on you, and you manage to not seem to give a shit...
That's probably the time it was uploaded to UA-cam that's why it was definitely not a year ago because it had been aired before I never seen it aired because I am 12 but I reshode my grandma and she remembers.
She let him sing first so the shine part can get in there cause she usually change it. Water boy too she got her Tennessee thing in there but no greasy spoon cafe additions.

Those little grins escaping from Monroe's typically serious visage are priceless😂
Dolly got away with things no one else on Earth ever could have❤❤❤
Dolly threw him a little with her cute little girl personality. She got a little smile out of him!
You know that was the first time Bill's people ever saw him smile.
Dolly is really cool!
Give just a wee kitty bit of your love, your time your 💚🐝✌️👋🎶🌎✝️♎️💡🔫🪓🌅⛵️🥰🚢🏖🏝
I agree Dolly Parton is cute with her smile
The marriage of Dolly’s energy and Bills stoicism is incredible

As a matter of fact, it is available on DVD in the form of the two-volume set Country's Greatest Stars Live (volumes I and II).
Hi mar
Thanks!
Was Townes ever on?
Dolly has a way of being alive in all of her performances. Even if she’s repeating herself, she does it slightly different single time and this keeps it fresh. Each performance is always brand new. She is always in the moment, that’s what makes her timeless.
Bill was my daddy's hero and Dolly his crush. Watching this in his memory today, on what would have been my dad's 83rd birthday.
Happy birthday pappy in heaven 👍
Your dad had a good ear (and eye)... That was one of the best videos I've ever seen. Dolly is like a bottle of champagne and Bill Monroe's voice is unreal.
kenny on that fiddle...
They are both national treasures
Wow! Bill Monroe and Dolly Parton! I love it! Awesome!
This is the Ultimate, Alpha Omega, blue grass song. It will keep you up at night and make your day go away.
Two voices handed down from above. What a privilege to hear both together
I don't listen to country music but I must say I like this one it got soul to it
Dolly is potent ! BEAUTIFUL AND POTENT - she almost scares me - :)
Dire straits
Dolly got to sing with the OG of Bluegrass.
Love Dolly. She's a bright light.
Dolly is just timeless ❤❤❤❤
Hi Roxanne
I just love Dolly! Her little cute laugh is my
Kryptonite!
Yeah,I love her laugh and her smile
Wish they had done the entire song. Loved it and watched this dozens of times.
I love this song, this is one of the best bluegrass songs ever
Only Dolly could bring that much fun in the place... really these bluegrass guys are so serious...
Two facts: Bill Monroe is seriously the greatest. You are confused.
Jean-François Joubert they’re concentrating. Lots of notes to execute
have you ever tried to play any instrument that fast lol
@@jfjoubertquebec What does Creole music got to do with Quebec 😂😂
This makes me smile! Dolly having so much fun vs. Bill straight and serious as always.
Wow, fantastic, Bill and Dolly so cool. I wish they had time for a banjo break....
Bill Monroe... ONE of a kind. Never be another.
She looks like an ANGEL 😇👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑❤️❤️❤️💕
I love how respectful Dolly is when singing duets. She tones her voice down a bit to harmonize with her partner. Her solo on this is a bit bigger. Bill Monroe is an icon, but Dolly seems to get him to crack a hint of a smile.
Really! Old! Good! Country Music!
Its not that old, time is relevant
Hello beautiful 🌹❤️🎃🎃🙏🎵🎶🎼🇺🇲💋💋😘🥰. Dolly. Love your. Show. Thank you so much. Dolly.
Dolly's an Angel.

You've gotta be real good to steal the show offa Bill that's for sure.

Watch ***** and Bill Monroe perform a rendition of the Jimmie Rodgers classic "Mule Skinner Blues"!
She let him sing first so the shine part can get in there cause she usually change it. Water boy too she got her Tennessee thing in there but no greasy spoon cafe additions.
Bill Monroe don't know how to act with Dolly. She's a bright shining star.
He is very old school like my dad was!
Kenny Baker sure had a good back-up band.
Dolly was the Miley of the 70s.
Dolly official page? Cheeeehoooo!
Never have liked Dolly but I love Mr Bill Monroe

Get out Carl, I can't even believe that this is what happens to our family OR her career..... oO Lucifer ( listening )
Best thing about it all, Dolly never forgot how to have fun.
Otherwise it gets so damned serious the britches fall off and that's pretty brittle.
