Whenever I watch these retro playthroughs, it beings me back to a time my dad and I would play video games like this into the wee hours of the night. I am also amazed we were able to finish some of them, as there are steps to be done that don't really make sense or you are not instructed to do.
This one was a Nintendo Power classic, by which I mean I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after seeing it in an issue, but couldn't ever get as far as it was covered because of it's high degree of challenge. Revisiting and conquering it later on in life it's one of those games that at one time felt endless but is actually quite short. Love those earth tones!
Faxanadu and the Batman soundtrack by Prince on cassette were my main presents for Christmas of 1989! I sequestered myself to my bedroom for days and played both non-stop until it was time to go back to school. To this day I always think of the song "Scandalous" anytime I see the World of Mist area in Faxanadu!
Great to see one of the all time classics again. Played this so much. It's my pet peeve to think that develoeprs from this game ended up working on Elden Ring and used this as an inspiration. Also...the amulet damage reduction bug..we found that out as kids before there was internet...It became a sort of challenge mode for us to make it more difficult...but the first time finding it was quite the setback...
That's how I treat the amulet, too. Nowadays I play the game via emulator and there's a patched ROM which fixes the bug, but I prefer to leave it unfixed and get the amulet during playthroughs. Kind of puts the game into 'hard mode'☺️
Ah, Faxanadu. Didn’t come around to it until emulation became a thing, but for the one experience I had with it, I was drawn into its simple premise and very realized (at the time) world. Something about the game draws you in and doesn’t let go until finished. Nice walkthrough, Alex. 👍🏼
One of my favorites. And it's not a true Faxanadu game without the text saying "NELLO" & "SNIELD". The rerelease/Revision 1/Virtual Console versions are the same but lacked that bold font we know and love. Even Zophar(yes, THEE Zophar of Zophar's Domain from the famous website from our youth and currently a retro streamer) approves of this glorious gem of the Xanadu/Dragon Slayer series.

One of those games I put under the "childhood frustrations" like another game in the supposed Dragon Slayer series.
Oh man, did you get really far, only to realize that you didn't have the right key and needed to backtrack through half the game world to buy one? I've been there.
Probably THE most accurately and appropriately rated NES game in it's entire library. An extremely conspicuous gem what's regard can be described as perfectly legal.

This is one of my favorite NES games, this and Crystalis. I bought both of them when they were first released. And ended up selling them after I beat them but regretted selling them and ended up buying used copies of both games later on. I was mostly into Sega games and consoles and have tons of games for the Genesis, Sega Cd, Saturn, and Dreamcast. And still have a lot games for all of them I ended up buying but never had enough time to even finish a lot of them. And the same with the Nintendo consoles I purchased over the years: Nes, Snes, N64, Game Cube, and Wii was the last Nintendo console I bought. So I have a lot of games for all of them that I bought way back when, and all of those games are stored away in boxes too with a lot of them as well I never had the time to play through most of them.
@@stevenrobinson9856 I don't plan on selling any more games. I plan on playing Faxanadu again sometime this winter. I've already played through Crystalis twice over the years. And when I find the time I plan on working through some of the other games I've had for years but never got to yet.
Love these Metroidvanias before we even came up with such a term. Have you ever considered giving Chester Field a go? It's anoter adventure type. Exclusive to Famicom yet has a playable fan translation. It's a little more clunky compared with this. But it offers more for those looking beyond our favorite classics.
There's a revised version? Did this one do away with the excessive blinking and get the mouth to move a little faster (I always feel as if a byte was reversed or something)?
I'm not sure if they moistened everyone's eyes in the update. This is the one I have a physical copy of, so it's the version I've played the most over the years. I also like how the font in this one makes it look like shopkeepers are saying "Nello" when they greet you.
famicom xanadu is pretty awesome. Gets stupidly hard later and that inertia building to make a jump really pissed me off, but beyond that it's a great game that i am glad we recieved. Given I am a fan of Zelda II and Battle of Olympus. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed those..just be warned it gets HARD later. the game will troll you "You're trying hard, that's cute...HAVE SOME OVERLY POWERED FIREBALLS TO THE FACE!" ugh...bitter memories.
also for some trivia. This is side story to the Dragon Slayer series of "Xanadu" hence the name Faxanadu (Famicom Xanadu) and we got another...that was brutal. you know it as "Legacy of the wizard"(Dragon Slayer IV : Drasile Family) composed by yuzo koshiro but such a cryptic bs game... I'll never beat it. If you enjoy Xanadu there are new ones that are pretty good "Xanadu Next" and "Tokyo Xanadu". personally. I think if Dragon Slayer IV was redone in a way that wasn't cryptic, more people would like like and still don't understand why we never got Sorcerian for the dreamcast! that was my favorite version of the game! it's japan only -_-
Faxanadu is secretly an allegory of the exorbitant cost of healthcare, leaving uninsured adventurers to seek home remedies like dried meats for the treatment of workplace injuries instead of seeing qualified professionals.
This game could use some kind of remaster. Better controls and platforming, the levels you gain ACTUALLY matter (wing boots GAIN duration rather then lose it, you get extra HP/MP each level, etc.).

Faxanadu is a classic NES-exclusive action-RPG that's well worth playing, especially for anyone who loves Zelda 2 or Simon's Quest.

Love this game, though was never much of a fan of Zelda 2 (maybe because I prefer top down Zelda).
This is one of my favorite games that I never got around beating as a kid... I might get at it again. 😊

Such a great game, well ahead of it's time. From the soundtrack to the layout of the game, it's quite a gem that's still enjoyable today.

I always liked this game. Especially learning the different monster names from the strategy wiki. Faxanadu is my favorite of the NES Games.
