    Fun Fact: In an interview, Questlove recalls watching the Grammy awards with his father as a child. It was the year in which one of the legendary Marsalis brothers did exceptionally well winning in multiple categories. I can't recall who it was but they ended their acceptance speech by saying, "and last but not least, I'd like to thank my father for making me practice playing my instrument for 5 hours a day." Questlove said his dad turned around, looked at him and said, "go downstairs and practice playing the drums." This constant practice his father made him undertake was apparently a little upsetting to a young Questlove because he, and I quote, "sure wanted to watch some (80's sitcom) "Different Strokes." lol.

  • @matthewsmith5374

    Compare Nards early interviews with Punk bands and his later hip hop interviews with Pharrel and Quest here and snoop of course. What a difference between the two interviewees and How the hip hop individuals react with such joy and genuine excitement to his crazy references and research and in turn how much they treat him with respect and get into the interview. Compared to the punk guys who treat him like shit and just want to leave. I can't help but think the genre has a big part in that difference. Hip hop being all about searching through the past, through the crate, for old records and old sounds and making them new and your own and it's so self referential, it's like they see what Nards is trying to do and they respect him for it. He's digging through the crates too and it turns into this awesome history lesson.

    • @jcramberry
      @jcramberry 7 років тому +74

      that's actually a pretty interesting point. i've always been big into hip hop and black music and always took a lot of the focus on history and culture for granted. for these fellas not just the roots, but a lot of the local, esoteric music communities are an essential part their experience, constantly passing down the knowledge and mulling over different ideas, washing across clubs and underground societies, bringing in fresh content. i guess because rock tends to be less about stylistics and familiarity as much as content/the avant-garde, it's ironically a more narcissistic genre than hip hop music. Kanye West is kind of an incorrigible cunt in hip hop, but i wonder if he's just another self-absorbed messianic figure in rock.

    • @Cat-vr8fj
      @Cat-vr8fj 7 років тому +118

      I don't think that has anything to do with it. The later indie and punk bands he interviews are more respectful because they know who's interviewing them as opposed to the bands and artists that aren't familiar with Nard's work. Take the indie and punk bands which I specifically mention, you will be pressed to find more pretentious students of music than the guys that spend all their time listening to indie records. Watch his Nirvana interview, Cobain fancies his taste in music very openly and many bands have those same kind of people. They "dig into the crates" too and are kind of stereotyped for being that way. I think it comes down to their personalities and a lot of bands take themselves way too fucking seriously, but I could say the same about some of the rappers Nard has interviewed that try to be tough on camera. The younger guys are much more chill, goes for bands or artists of any genre period

      I think a big part of it is that a lot of punk bands, particularly back when punk/pop-punk had become mainstream, were on the back foot in a lot of interviews (especially ones conducted by random independent guys).
      I think a lot of punk bands, upon hearing this guy pull up a bunch of older artists, and even the members of said band's older, more obscure work, would immediately jump to the conclusion that the next few questions would be grilling them on not being really punk, or having sold out - which is where a lot of those types of interviews would end up going.
      Then there's the fact that a lot of punk bands back in the day didn't want to do interviews in the first place - partially because of what I just said, partially because some seemed to view it as music industry bullshit that their managers talked them into (see: Henry Rollins intimidating that Maximum Rock N' Roll kid and then saying "I think this is selling out. I think doing interviews is selling out").
      There's very little stigma in hip hop regarding self-promotion, being successful, and showing genuine enthusiasm for all types of music (not just the /right/ kind of music), so it means a lot of the artists are far more open in interviews.
      Now that punk is less mainstream, and it no longer matters what's cool in the scene (because the scene isn't cool anymore) - punk bands tend to be far more chill about that sort of thing.

    I cannot even express how much joy I feel when I see artists surprised by Nardwuar. He is able to facilitate an experience for these artists that connects them to some original and authentic passion for what they do. Then he films it and let’s us all share in the joy of the artist’s inspiration. Thank you Nardwuar from the bottom of my heart. You are a legend.

    I keep coming to this episode over and over again.. Perhaps my favorite of all nard interviews. Few musicians really know music at such depths as those two. Considering their chemistry shrines off with positivity, discussing stuff that allures both of those individuals is eagerly exciting to watch and hear. I guess, it is the reason where the hell 46 minutes went, went like seconds, tbh. Need more of these.
