  • This is a quick comparison video of two great lenses. Sony 50mm F1.4 GM vs Sony 50mm F1.2 GM. Pure night street photography. Can you tell the difference? Is it worth spending an additional $400-500 for the F1.2 version?

    Would love to know what you think of the new Sigma 50mm f1.2 DG DN and how it compares to these?

      I will be testing this lens starting tomorrow, so you can expect at least two new videos coming soon.

    Great idea to compare these two lenses. However, with a faster shutter speed than 1/80s you would rule out any difference because of camera shake (handholding away from your body😉). Also: there is a third of a stop difference between your shots. That was to be expected, but it makes the comparison much harder. I would be interested if f1.2 was throwing the background much more out of focus than f1.4. And: what about detail at f1.4 on both lenses? I mean it is nice to open up really wide but if that results in images that are not quite as sharp in the area of focus, that would be regrettable.

      Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate your input. My main idea was to compare the specificity of F1.2 and F1.4 because it is one of the main factors for which we pay more. And I wanted to do it in the evening/night time. But thanks to your comment, I know what I can improve in the next video. All the best!

      @@eastbanger I apologise for sounding negative. I really appreciate you doing the video and hope you do more. I was just commenting from a professional user's perspective, wondering if I should spend any money at all for a 50mm lens given that I already have the 55/1.8 which is quite fine (and small, too)
      Lots of gear doesn't really add much to a final image. I am a full time professional event and portrait photographer. And I am getting along quite well with my Sony A9II cameras and two lowly Tamron 28-75 and 70-180mm lenses for my events (and GM 35/1,4, 55/1,8 and 85/1.8 lenses for portraits)
      While I always salviate at new toys (A9III, GM lenses) I am a bit sceptical whether new tech really improves my images much. Whenever I ask myself if a better camera/lens would have helped me to produce better images at an event / portrait shoot, I tend to be sceptical. The global shutter of a A9III might help me to get rid of that last bit of banding that I get from some bad LED-spots on a stage. And it might help me to do flash work outside at noon at f1.8. Will I notice? Yes, maybe a bit. Will my clients notice: most won't. They are mainly interested how they "look" in the picture. Will they pay me more money for my images because of my fancy gear? No, certainly not.
      The camera industry will experience difficult times. The "old" cameras already are "good enough" for almost all situations. The new frontier will be cell-phone integration.
      I really want to be able to quickly select images on my camera (high-res OLED screen on the back) and send them out to my client, do a basic touch-screen RAW-conversion (up/down for brightness, right/left for color temperature) and press just one button to send that image to a pre-defined e-mail or online-gallery.

      @@franknurnberger1102 no need to apologise, I wasn't offended or anything like that. Your comment just made me thinking about future videos of this or similar type. And there is a lot to improve.
      So, the 55/1.8 is like a top quality glass when it comes to image quality. I assumed this is the Zeiss we're talking about. I'd keep it. No need to spend money for additional 5mm, slightly improved AF, and some minor image rendering fixes - easy to manage in post-production. It would be better to get a prime - 135mm, which is great for portraits. The newest Viltrox 135/1.8 is coming soon.
      And about your thoughts regarding new gear. I'm in the same place where the A7RV and A7SIII are enough for me. A few lenses from the GM series and a few Sigma lenses are already fully sufficient. Of course, I can try to lose weight and buy everything new because it's lighter. But why? I even got used to 105/1.4 and I no longer feel the weight like I did at the beginning. I think it's a matter of personal approach.
      I got my 50/1.2 only because it was my first 50mm, and there was no 1.4 at that time :) Now, I'd take 50/1.4.

      I have thought of buying/trying the 105/1.4 but was put off by the weight/size so far. But maybe I will give it a go at some point. Lot of them available at Ebay. Can’t lose much, if it turns out not to work out for me. Might be an interesting addition to my 70-180 Tamron, just for some special effect shots.

      @@franknurnberger1102 I totally recommend 105/1.4 when it comes to portraits. Not sure about the events. I guess it depends on how long the event is and how much space you have there :) Or if you have a store that allows that, you could borrow one for a day or two and test.

    You seem to prefer the 50mm f1.2 images consistently over the f1.4 but at the end of the video the weight and cost savings seem to bring you back to the F1.4 lens.

    • @eastbanger
      @eastbanger  2 місяці тому +1

      Nah. It's definitely less than "prefer". I use F1.2 on a daily basis. And when I took the F1.4 version into my hands, I saw practically the same lens. The differences are marginal. Therefore, in the end, I encourage you to consider it, taking into account the price and weight. If I were buying now, I would buy F1.4.
