4k color grading makes it look like an actual Tim Burton movie now
Whoever did the colour grading for the initial Blu-ray release went overboard with saturation, particularly reds and greens.
Because Blu-ray was in its infancy, still in 2008, catalog titles were deemed necessary to have a little more punch than their DVD counterparts to sell this new mrdia. So they amped up the colours, and in the process obliterated accuracy, and detail too.
This 4K of Beetlejuice look fantastic.
Great video. Thanks.
I don't know what happened but I have the 2008 bluray and it doesn't look like that. My colors aren't that over saturated.
I don't know if the editing software did it or youtube did it but that's not what the bluray looks like.
I can post screenshots if you want.
@@JohnSmith-qn3ob Actually, I never got around to buying the Blu-ray myself, but have ordered the 4K. So I have never witnessed the disc first-hand. Maybe it is the capture technology used, because the guy who runs the site seems like a pretty fastidious guy when it comes to accuracy, etc.
Sometimes I'm shocked by comparison videos where the Blu-ray appears to show noisy, less-than-black blacks, and I think to myself "How could they look at this and deem it ready for release", yet I myself had watched the same disc and not noticed the noisy, less-than-black blacks in normal viewing situations. Nearly all these examples are corrected in the 4K/HDR release though, even though I had never noticed those particular problems when viewing the disc in motion.
I don't know what to say about this. I don't doubt what you say and I assume that your screen is calibrated, so it's a mystery for sure.
This isn't true at all. The issue was that the 2008 release was made from an HD master that was created in 2002-2003 or so for HDTV broadcast, using older equipment and video technology. By the time 2008 came around, the master looked dated, but because Blu-ray was still a niche format, they likely opted to use the older master to save money from having a new scan done. There was no mandate to add "punch" to videos, it was just a side-effect of many early Blu-ray releases made using older HD masters from the early days of digital HD.
@@IAmNeomic Whether it was from a dated transfer intended for HDTV broadcast or my assertion that more "punch" was added on this occasion is not really important.
What is important is that the 4K disc is superior in most every way.
I never implied a mandate by studios to add more "punch" to older catalog titles, but I do maintain that when preparing masters for HDTV broadcast or physical media release, there is nearly always some changes made to contrast or colour during the process.
The movie industry should have learnt the lesson the music industry did during the 80s when they prepared releases of older albums for compact disc. Instead of preparing new masters for the CD's they used the already existing masters that were intended for the original vinyl releases. Some early CD's were shocking, often adding unnecessary equalisation in an attempt to add aural "punch". This was done to rush as much content on the new medium out the door as soon as possible. I actually believe they knew at the time that it would eventually be necessary to re-release much of this music in new, remastered formats in the future. Re-releasing both music and movies in restored, remastered, and remixed editions are huge industries at this point.
If I love an album or a movie, I will nearly always re-buy in the hope of some perceived improvement in sound or vision. The studios know me very well, it seems.
I literally just got done watching it. I bought the Best Buy exclusive 4k steelbook and just got done watching it. It looks amazing.
Thank God I have a PS5 to get the 4K version. I was very close of getting the Bluray version thinking it would just be an up resolution since now I saw it in sale in Amazon for $16 since I cant wait for the sequel in September.
4K looks very dull. the blu-ray looks better in most scenes IMO. Know when you go to Bestbuy and they show TVs on display and compare the more “vibrant colors” that HDR has vs a non HDR display, well the blu-ray version of this reminded me of the HDR and the 4K version reminded me more of a blu-ray. Kind of went backwards if you ask me
I was sold halfway through. Looks amazing!
Thanks for demonstrating it!! 👍
My copy is coming in the mail. Waiting to see what it looks like on my Sony X900F. Your comparison video makes it look very promising. Colors in the 4K presentation look very natural as opposed to the oversaturated colors of the Blu-ray. Resolution is far greater in the 4K presentation also.
It looks like the HDR applied makes it look more of a natural presentation over the blu ray but iam struggling to see any extra detail highlights
Agreed
Now if only the person who did this could work on "Honeymoon in Vegas" my life would be complete.
Thanks for these videos. They've been helping my purchase decisions
My pleasure !
Awesome 4k quality!!
The 4k is a definite improvement, better than the batman 89 4k imo!
Beautiful comparison🥰🥰🥰
It seems that image is a little bit more cropped in the 4k version... Thank you!
It is !!
Not sure how I feel about the 4k. It is clearer at times, but this movie is already rather dark and reducing the saturation kind of dulls it down, especially the skin tone.
I don’t know but I like the 2008 Blu-ray better yeah it’s over saturated but a quick adjustment in settings.
10:00 is like the perfect example between the two. blu ray its so over saturated you lose all detail in the hair compared to the 4k with its original colors
I like the brighter colors in the Blu Ray, not sure what’s wrong with me 😂 but the 4K lacks life. If I was watching it at the movies I would prefer the 4K film look, but at home I want more pop.
This 4k only looks a lot more dull, if that’s what people wanna see them I guess this is a good restoration. For me personally, I’m a little underwhelmed. It’s more an alternate version than an upgrade. Imo
I’m actually gonna disagree with the majority here but, personally, I’m not the biggest fan of this remaster. I agree that on the 2008 Blu Ray that they went a bit over the top with the saturation but every character in this film literally, and ironically, looks dead. Everyone looks insanely pale.
Going from this video I agree with you.
4K has more natural colours for sure.
Where can one get the music that you used? It’s wonderful!
It’s on UA-cam library !
@@Mymoonization Thank you! I’ll look it up. I was searching on Amazon for a CD release. It reminds me of some family comedies from the 90s.
@@harrisoncastleberry458 Ha ha !!!!!
I don't know why I started watching this on my shitty phone.
The 4K looks like it is in 1.85:1, the original BD was 1.78:1
Standard Blu-ray looks red and warm. 4K looks blue and cold.
Please video of goonies 4K vs bluray
This music makes it look more like BABE: PIG THE IN CITY! Not the best choice for a comedy-gothic-horror, but still - thanks for the video as always!
I prefer the blu ray colors, for the 4k just over saturates them, but the resolution on 4k is much crisper
Many of the indoor scenes get a little too dark and blue while improving skin color. The 2008 one is so saturated that it almost looks like an old dvd. Both seem to lack the film grade that older films have.
Why does the 4k look duller and less color saturation in these comparisons? No joking thats what I see
Both versions look good, but now I do prefer the 4k release
The goonies 4K vs blu ray plz
Looks like to me that they didn't go back to the original film negatives and then digitally re-composite all of the elements.
Colors are taken out! Unlike StarWars 4k editions, blue replaces red. What else??
2008 Bluray = Over Saturated Color
4K = No Color
Love the music of your video, what is it?
The 4k has perfect colors

My moonization Thanks!
The haunted mansion and hocus pocus Batman forever on 4k blue ray vs old blue ray read my comments on UA-cam
@@goodsuc81 it needs a bit more color it still looks good tho
Beetlejuice out on 4k in 3 days comparison on 4k and.. sherlock holmes 1 and 2 also on 4k out 1 week not yet 4k comparison way wait so long 😔
lack of red
The Blu-ray looks absolutely terrible! 4K ULTRA HD for the win! Hands down!
Ugh...looks too pale and muted for me....pass
