When you have a 7ft draft on your boat, there are just some places you should go…and Big Pass is one of those places. However, trying once wasn’t enough for this captain, and despite multiple suggestions to go up to Longboat Pass where he would have plenty of depth, he was determined to try going through Big Pass again, not once but two more times! After the third time ungrounding him, he finally decided to take my advice and take the admittedly very out-of-the-way route and go up to Longboat Pass. Grounding 3 times in 12hrs sets a new record for me and also ties him for the most ungroundings I’ve done for a single customer along with the 49ft Jeanneau and the 45ft Freedom. Although I know something about the future y’all don’t know yet and won't find out until the video next week…😉

You say that, but the membership cost hasn't gone up all that much over the years. If you want to save money, go to your local boat show and if towboat us is there, they usually have a $50 discount on renewals
@@CaptKenOYet still the coverage is well worth what you pay for it. Even if it it doubled at the highest plan. We do commercial towing, You'd SH*T a 🐈🐈🐈 if you saw what we charge to do a simple tow our winch out on empty/unloaded on a semi truck with 4-6 axles.
If anyone needs to invest in a swing keel it's this guy.
This right here is what keeps me in my 22' trailer sailor with a swing keel, kick up rudder and less than 12" of draft. I'm not running aground anywhere I can't walk home from.

Thats a J-111 which is 36.5ft. Draft is 7.2ft. Those are really nice racing sailboats.
So, this is sort of the sailing equivalent to rich guy in a Ferrari with no driving skills what so ever. 😂
If I grounded my sailboat myself bad enough to have to be towed I would have the sails down before the tug ever arrived.
If I were a tug operator when arriving to tug a sailboat and they didn’t grasp that the sails should be down….i don’t know. I probably would not be surprised to see them again within 24 hours..
Absolutely counts! 3 ungroundings! If you hook to them and unground them it counts! If they don’t listen to sound advice then that’s on them. Of course no tip! Typical sailor! Awesome job captain Ken. Keep the camera rolling.

Discovered your channel only this weekend. Enjoyed watching very much. I've a question, it seems as though the sailboats you rescue from grounding were apparently under sail when they grounded. Is that your observation as well? After all the videos, I have but on word:" charts". Read them. As as sailor, I'm cautious, very cautious over water depth and that other nasty variable-tide. I can sail down a channel but I wouldn't do it in water I did not know.

Most of the sailboats aren't actually under sail when the ground themselves...this guy did it once, but the 45ft freedom has done it every time🤦😂
J boats are made for racing, they are deep draft boats and the gulf has a lot of shallow sandbars, a bad combo if you don't know the area, you can get in trouble in a hurry even with good electronics, which I'm sure he had on that fairly new high dollar boat.
Yeah, definitely not a boat for this area. Maybe Tampa Bay where it's deeper, but a better East coast boat for sure

I live in Eastern North Carolina, and here a 7 ft. Draft sailboat is useless. This sounds like a blue water sailboat, and should be offshore. A must needs to be a depth sounder and very slow in and out of the harbor, or just keep it on a ball in deeper water.
There's deeper water in harbor...the problem is getting out the inlets to the gulf. Most of the ones around shoal in pretty good after a few years
Circa 2006 I brought a 30ft sailboat from Ft Lauderdale to Jensen Beach and ran aground about 5 times during that trip. In my defense, the boat had a 6ft draft, I had no charts, no local knowledge, and no gps or other electronics. So, I may just be the unfortunate record holder for the most groundings in a one week period.
Yeahhhhh, but I didn't have to come save you, so unfortunately that record doesn't count here 😕😂

It seems groundings is more ubiquitous than i was aware of.
What sucks is depth gauge readings when following a power vessel, they show errant readings from the wash.
4th should be a broadside and scuttling. Geez Louise.

You’d be surprised how much water some modern designs actually need. The trend is for high aspect foils (deep skinny keels and rudders) that make for a more maneuverable boat that goes to windward a bit better.
But 10’ on the gulf coast of FL no wonder he spends his days aground….
J Boats are performance boats and have deeper keels. I think he said 6’ although I’m pretty sure he actually draws 6.3’ which is pretty deep for the size boat.

Hahaha. Yeah. It was damaged in heavy seas a few months ago that bent the whole thing (it was a poor design from the beginning). It's since been hauled out and modified a bit for better rigidity

It's a performance race boat...both of those are great for pleasure boating, but would reduce performance even if only a bit

Yes, it would run counter to business, but these guys really need a ten minute lesson in navigation. Red, right, return. On the ICW Green buoys are on the Gulf side. Learn how to read a chart plotter. He has a chart plotter, right? I run my 19' CC boat out of Cortez, so a lot of your rescues are on familiar ground.
I'm not 10min would be enough to teach them what they'd need to know about navigating around this area...

Man just went thru this area in a sailboat, the water way is extremely narrow and tricky. But the fact that it’s narrow also makes it easy. Dude shouldn’t be on a boat like this.
In all fairness I bumped in the channel near the mangroves and the anchorages at long boat pass.
