How Many Times Will I Have to Save This Guy? | Grounding 45ft Freedom

- We have a contender for the most ungroundings I’ve done with one customer. This guy is now tied at 3 apiece with a boat I dealt with in Venice (although that guy was 3x in a week), and with the 49ft Jeanneau. Based on the directions he gave me to get back into his marina, I’m starting to think he’s navigating around Sarasota Bay by dead reckoning…which is not very precise and would explain why he keeps running aground. What do you think? Leave your comments down below!

Welcome back to the channel, sailors! Today, we're diving into some epic grounding tales that'll make you rethink your navigation strategies. This time, we've got a contender for the most ungroundings ever with a single customer. Can you believe it?
This adventurous soul is now neck and neck with a boat I once dealt with in the winding canals of Venice. And get this, the Venetian boat managed to ground itself three times in just one week! But our current protagonist isn't far behind, matching each mishap with resilience and determination.
But here's the kicker - based on the directions he's been giving me to navigate back into his marina, I'm starting to suspect he's relying on dead reckoning to traverse Sarasota Bay. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with dead reckoning, let's just say it's not the most precise method, especially for navigating tricky waters like these.
Could this be the reason behind his repeated groundings? Is he simply charting his course based on a wing and a prayer? Share your thoughts in the comments below! And if you've got your own grounding stories to tell, don't hesitate to share - after all, we're all in this seafaring adventure together.
Stay tuned for more tales from the high seas, and until next time, fair winds and following seas, sailors! ⚓🌊 - Авто та транспорт
Love that Cap is still holding the wheel while he sit's rock solid but all sail's up
Yep 🤦
Maybe it's time for a RV
I don't know if it's a good idea for this guy to be on the road with anything bigger than a golf cart. I can totally see this guy wedging an RV under a low bridge or taking out a covered awning at an ATM or something. He's clearly got the same IQ as a coffee table.
As an RVer who loves boats but does not have one, No stay off the roads!
😊
He’d probably get it stuck under a bridge or in a drive-thru 😂
These comments are great! 🤣
Capt Ken you have the patience of a Saint…Well done Sir.
Hahaha. Thanks lowrider! 😇
He knows where he is going. It’s the bottom that keeps moving.
Keep up the great work!
Lmao 😂
Charts?! Who needs charts! That guy is just kinda doing it own thing out there, obvious to the rest of the world.
They might help keep him off the sandbars...but then who would I rescue? 🤣
Thank you Cap for share your work and experience!!! We really enjoy your videos!! Thank you sir
Thank you Robert for watching these videos! 😁
Wow - amazing. Your patience is strong.
Hahaha. Thanks Mick!
Great job Captain!!!
Thanks Jay!
Ain't got time for the helm, gotta call my deckhand on the walkie tallkie phone ...
So, I guess his motor was not working. Most of the time you can sail off a ground with some heel, but it looks like little to no wind that day. 5 foot draft is pretty short for a 45' sailboat. Interesting to see a 45' sailboat with a hank on jib. You could heel that boat pretty far and the boat would just pop right back up. The entire tow back to the marina, they could have been tidying up the sails. Did he want you to tow them in to save gas? That cap wasn't kind at all. If you have seen him thrice, how many times has he gotten grounded and made it out with his sails on his own? His keel must be tired and worn by now.
It's awing keel, so you can't heel it over too much when it's aground like that. That's also why it's such a small draft for a big boat
@@CaptKenO Yeah, makes sense.
Love your videos! Consider him job security.
Hahaha. Thanks Lynn! Definitely with this guy around!
I'm wondering about the synthetic ropes they are using for auto recovery and winches, and whether or not they make any sense on boat recovery?
The lines we use are synthetic material too, just heavier duty and designed to float
How does this gentleman manage to keep running his vessel aground? Charts are so accurate these days that you would almost need to be doing it on purpose.
He's clearly got the same IQ as a coffee table, that's how lol
I'm pretty sure he doesn't have one...and if he did, I'm not sure he'd know how to use it
How are you liking the two-stroke torque vs the four-stroke?
I can't say the torque is any better, but the whaler with the 2 strokes is just propped perfectly for that engine/boat combo...but I hate running the 2 strokes, so even if they are/were better, I'd take the 4 strokes
Hey Ken, do you just get what ever boat each day, I've seen three different setups, but two 200 smoke em's has to be the best sounding :)
Great question. So we have 1 dedicated boat per location, and 2 reserve boats in storage. The prokat and the worldcat are the 2 primary boats I run and they get swapped out about every hundred hour for maintenance. The whaler is the backup boat for the other location, but it comes down here when both of my boats are out for service. It doesn't happen often (thankfully), but sometimes one of my boats is out for major service and the other needs it's regular servicing
@@CaptKenO Cool, Ken, thanks for the explanation :)
At idle they sound like a top fuel dragster.
They're annoying as hell. It reminds me of working in Venice on the diesel boat and not being able to hear what the customer is saying (except the diesel sounded way better!)
Repeat customers are good right...lol. Interesting Cap on the sailboat...
They sure are! 😁
👍
Didn’t you have to tell him last time to bring in his sails also. Does he get the frequent flyer discount 😂
Yes. All 3 times I've had to tell him to bring in his sails. No discount for him...although he has a membership, so it's technically free anyway 🤷
My old marina glad I’m not there with this guy bouncing around the marina 😂😂😂
Lol 😂 How long ago were you there?
We lived on my 52’ Sea Ray during Covid we got stuck there 2019 we stayed and built a house and sold the big boat 2 years ago now boat out of palcida on a 25’ Sea Ray.
OK. Cool! Do you miss the big boat or do you prefer the ease of the smaller one?
I really miss operating the big boat but the small one is easier for maint etc and sandbar cruising. She did take us from Boston, around Fla and the Bahamas so we did build some fantastic memories.
Once they toss your line off. are you free to leave?
Depends on the situation, but generally yes
No wonder the guy keeps running aground. He doesn't pay attention worth a sheet!
4’11 draft on a boat that size?
That's the beauty of technology...a wing keel let's you have a shallow draft for a big boat!
Gotta love the repeat customers! The ones that get every cent out of their membership-if they are members. Typical of the type- “the wind is free everything else should be” TIP YOUR CAPTAIN! And don’t tell them how to do their job, “answer your phone” how about steer your boat and get off your phone! Just unloading a lil here….
Sounds like you have dealt with some of the same type of customers there capt...🤔 😂
@@CaptKenO yes indeed! Keep the videos coming brother!
Sailboat captain … grounded with both the foresail and main up, having to be told to lower his sails, then not steering his boat correctly … Wow. Stupid is as stupid does!
And I bet he drives too! Yikes!
Probably...
Welcome to my life/job 🙄
Some really bad seamanship there, I bet his dock neighbors have some stories too
He docked the boat OK, so maybe it's just under sail he has issues...
🤣Some boaters are camera hogs
Trying to sail harder into what got them stuck. Does this guy realize boats float in water, not sand, mud or rocks?
Clearly not 🤣
👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Finally i do
You do what?
I draw 6'8"
He's got a wing keel
Hello, I like your videos I'm new to sailing but want to try it out. So my question is don't they know the depth with depth finder? I absolutely don't want to be like this guy so what's the solution? Thanks so much, like your professionalism 🫡
Thanks Josh! Depth finders generally only read the depth directly under you and not what's in front...so you have to know where you're going and keep an eye on the depth and know when it's getting shallow, and then either be very careful, or back out
Guys like this should not have a boat. Or a car. Or a bike.
So 3 x in a yr, he should be done on the membership tows untll 2025, should put her on the hard till then
I've been told you're allowed 5x/year before they won't renew it
Wouldn't have much of a job if nothing ever went wrong.
They don’t belong on the water.
He's not hurting anyone...yet.
He needs a catamaran
That would just give him a wider boat to hit the sandbars with...😁
Shouldn’t skipper a Canoe.
lazy crew
Why could he not motor himself after you u ground him?
He had some sort of engine issue and then was able to get it working again 🤷
Does he have a chart plotter and depth sounder? This is getting ridiculous! He needs to buy something with a swing-keel or start sailing a dinghy. 🤦🏻♂️
Hahaha. Depth finder, yes. Chart plotter...I don't think so.
Just like some old people need not drive these people need not sail AT ALL........!!!!!!! At what point do you take that right away from the STUPID....... How many times do you have to help them at the same spot........!!!!!!!!
As many times as needed! As long as he isn't hurting anyone, what's the harm?
Some people should not own boats
Does this guy even have a clue? He needs to stay on land.
If you read the other comments, people don't want him there either 🤣
So third go around, still doesn’t know to steer for the stern, still had all plain sail flying by the time you got there, during the whole tow left his sails in a fouled mess, not to mention whatever the hell is going on with his sail cover…
I don’t think this is a fellow who should be sailing which is saying something coming from me… I’m typically of the opinion that it’s better to educate than to shame but there’s got to be a limit some where
I 100% agree...but if he wants to keep running aground without hurting people...I'll be happy to keep pulling him back to deeper water! 😂
Get off the damn phone and pay attention to your helm, this dude needs a RV instead of a vessel. Time for a new hobby there sailer. He’s grounded and still has all his sheets up…….wth ?
NO! I do not want this guy driving the roads in a big RV!! 😵💫
Lol 😂
I love how many people said they don't want him on the road either! 🤣
This is what happens when you mix rum, coke and clown suits 🙄
Pretty much 🤦♂️
