Manhattan Jazz Orchestra - OVER THE RAINBOW

- David Matthews and Friends. This fantastic trio take on the well loved movie classic from the Wizard of Oz. Featuring Carolyn Leonhart Vocals, Bill Mays Piano, Eddie Gomez Bass.
On UA-cam, you can find a lot of jazzy or bluesy covers of this song. The great majority of them feature overwrought performances: vocal theatrics, excessive facial expression or body language. That's why it was a pleasure to find this simple but beautifully sung petfienance.
tell'em Toto
Yup, narcissistic airheads who desire everyone to always be looking at them, there's the artist and there's the internet culture of today
I always see Carolyn as a backup vocalist on live Steely Dan videos but hearing this is wonderful. Outstanding performance by all!
Carolyn is just beautiful :)
Somewhere over the rainbow
way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once
once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds
are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Oh way above the chimney tops
that's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then oh why can't I?
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Oh way above the chimney tops
that's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why oh why can't I?
Why oh why can't I?
Why why can't I?
Shuch A Beautiful Voice.
Great! Another one I like is from Eva Cassidy. Find her on YT singing live with just a guitar.
Nice rendition. This might not be nice to say but Carolyn just lacks that last say, 20% of talent that separates her from the elite singers. I always enjoy but am never mesmerized by her performances.
I wish I could play piano like Bill Mays. He's awesome.
Eddie Gomez...one of the top bass players on the planet. Very nice.
Eddie is that you?
Nice job Carolyn what a great voice
Maybe the best jazz rendition of the song I've ever heard. Superb vocal style and quality! This gal should do some big band standards.
Simply a PEACH of a performance from ALL. Sublime!
WOW!!! Very good singer!!!
Nice to hear this song done without busting a gut. Love this singer.
Thanks for the post.
Carolyn Leonhart plays her instrument perfectly, and well accompanied.
One of my all time favorite songs, sung by one of my all time favorite singers!
She sings like Prez plays. Easy on the eyes, too.
OVER THE RAINBOW, AUTORES HAROLD ARLEN E YIP HARBURG, MÁGICO DE OZ 1939, JUDY GARLAND ATRIZ E INTERPRÉTE, GRANDE OBRA MUSICAL, LINDA INTERPRETAÇÃO E APRESENTAÇÃO. PARABENIZO A TODOS. ABRAÇOS CORDIAIS.
Effortless excellence from Carolyn.
Less is more. The best rendition I have heard in quite a while.
A young Carolyn Leonhart, pre Steely Dan, with a nice rendition of Yip Harburg's classic.
A marvelous version of this beautiful song that was almost cut from "The Wizard of Oz".
Lyrics, soft voice both amazing^^
As I listened to this, I could not help but thinking of the recording of the Hawaiian guy that everybody and their uncle got their panties in a wad over. The guy didn't sing the words, he didn't know the melody, he just made up crap and the unwashed sang his praises. You make a statement to that effect and they attack you like you had something against Mother Teresa. Now this was good. In fact it was excellent. Why don't people have just a little class?
Gutpile Charlie That fat guy is dead.
And Richard your point is?
Eva Cassidy owns this song, but Bill Mays is the greatest. He sure looks like Leonard Bernstein.
Ella, Sarah, Billy, Carmen, Dinah, Cleo, Lina, Nina...never read lyrics while performing...
I love most everything that Carolyn sings - she demonstrates musical prowess and vocal purity. However, this one does not work real well for me...a bit too much restraint and caution. Most anyone who enjoys CL's voice knows a good performance when heard. I find myself enjoying the MJH more than CL's vocal interpretation. All that said, Carolyn has a genuine gift of soft elegance - extreme accuracy, and sleek style. (Have a listen to Eva Cassidy's performance of this on the Live at Blues Alley.... just superb.)
Roger Roger Topical female M1 singer, they’re a dime a dozen. No great feat of accomplishment here, at least she doesn’t overuse vibrato, which wouldn’t really matter, it would actually make it more interesting for some ppl.
Hello, I'm from Brazil, where I can find more videos of this woman singing

Eddie never did get his intonation right.
I was just thinking that, while not great, it was better here than his average performance. Later Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Gary Peacock- these are guys I love but playing in tune was not their (no pun intended) forte. Double bass is a formidable instrument, for sure. Just weird to be top-tier players and not have complete technical mastery of their instrument.
