I just given a anti-fungal and anti- bacterial bath to four female guinea pigs for they are loosing some hair loss and weight fluctuation. I saw one of your videos I believe, that mentioned if you see skin at the end of the hair that it could indicate possible mite etc... It had no idea but remembered seeing this in the past and now I check for it. I also gave them some critical care with vitamin C. I will take their weight and check the hair loss next week.
I remember when my Harley started to bite his back the second day I know that something was wrong and this was my first time going to the veterinarian and was so very lucky she was a guinea pig veterinarian she took one look at him and know what was wrong with him the mights that so she gave him and my two piggies at home reslaloison the same thing that that you give them to kill the mights I’m so glad that I that I took Harley in when I did because I saved them from having to go through all the pain and suffering that they would have went through
My son recently got two guinea pigs, has not been keeping the pen very clean in my opinion. One of the guinea pigs has been showing signs of weight loss and hair problems, today I asked to examine the guinea pig, it seems to have thick skin and its back side… It’s clearly itchy. I watched it in gentle running warm water and a soft toothbrush for brushing the fur that was falling out. This poor little guy must be miserable. Thanks for your video seems like mites is what’s going on. I fed it some orange slices, and will be overseeing the treatment. I sent a $4.99 thank you. It’s not much in reference to the gratitude that I have for your video, I’m not even sure how I will do the vet bill yet but I will make sure that he gets in asap. Blessings to you and thank you for a well done video! Heidi E Tacoma WA
Hi Adeele no, they are species specific so they will not affect you. If you are here in Sydney we have health checks available just reach out on admin@guineapigstuff.com or alternately just reach out if you have questions.
Do you know if skinny pigs can get mites? Mine had a seizure tonight and hes recovering in my arms. Can't say I see scratches, I mean he scratches but nothing crazy....
Can mites cause a pig to tilt their head to one side if that is the area effected? My piggie just today has started to tilt her head to one side and then shake her head and then she brings her head to a normal position.
Hi Rebecca I am happy to give you my thoughts. Hop onto the cavy central facebook page and you can PM me. Send through a video or we can face time about it.
You can use the topical as oral but you need to ensure you know the weight and measurements necessary. Better to give topically where you can as it won't interfere with gut.
Okay but what about lice? 😭 I got my 3 week old guinea girl from a breeder, and she has little white lice crawling near the base of her fur- I have no idea what to do. My mom got it for me for Christmas and I can't afford to take her to a vet, and if I can't figure out how to get rid of them my mom's going to make me return her- please help!
Hi Pastel this can be treated. If you are in Sydney reach out on admin@guineapigstuff.com for an appointment and we will correct this. However if not please follow these vidoes. ua-cam.com/video/iz8_K6vadOE/v-deo.html
I didn't realize I had watched this one before a year ago. Definitely got to be careful for sure. In the future I will just you the liquid ivermectin topically on their ears. I don't feel comfortable with the ivermectin paste anymore.
@@nat-it3sq The paste is meant for a one time use on a horse and the ivermectin is not evenly distributed through out the paste so one time you might give them a dose that has very little ivermectin to next time giving the a pea sized dose that has a ton of ivermectin in it. My pigs got sick and wouldn't eat after the paste treatment so I took them to the vet. The vet told me it was the paste that made them sick and advised me never to give them the paste. The recommend a drop behind the ears of it is the best safest way to do it, they actually recommend something called revolution, it's a similar de-wormer paste but designed for dogs and cats, but can be used on guinea pigs,. You just put a tiny drop on the ears like you would ivermectin. You can use the ivermectin liquid and just put a drop on the ears once every 3 months. But I would never recommend the paste after what happened to me. that's just my opinion and what my vet told me
Hi Bharti no it isn't. Come join us in the facebook group and you can post about it and I can help with what I see. facebook.com/groups/CavySavvyGuineaPigCommunity
Thank you for this. It's always good to hear different advice and different perspectives on guinea pigs regarding mites and other parasites.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for taking the time to do your videos I love them.
Thanks Cathy

Great to see you MsZoomy. Thanks for being here.
Lots if good info - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you use a tube per pig? Or just a dot? :)
My dr. Said I had ring worm from my pig
I saw your post. Sometimes she itchy is it mites or ring worm. I bought medicine and rub her coat
Oh lord I just inherited two guineas and they are infested with lice. It was disturbing. Thank you for sharing
I am glad you found this and hope you have it all in hand. They are species specific but just awful for them and very treatable.
My guinea pig has mites. My question is can my guinea pig give me mites as well.

I have a mini pig pretty sure she has mites now my arms have little bumps! Do I have mites now?!
Hi no they are species specific.
Sounds like you might be allergic to their coat or hay?
Can mites cause a pig to tilt their head to one side if that is the area effected? My piggie just today has started to tilt her head to one side and then shake her head and then she brings her head to a normal position.

is durvet ivermectin pour on (5mg/ml, blue liquid) safe to apply topically in guinea pigs?
The blue is the cattle version. The 5mg you can use topically on guinea pigs
Where do you get oral ivermectin? I use the topical ivermectin on the ears as prevention every 2 months. However, I do worry they might lick that.
You can use the topical as oral but you need to ensure you know the weight and measurements necessary. Better to give topically where you can as it won't interfere with gut.
@@GuineaPigStuff That makes sense. I guess if it can be used orally there's no harm in them licking a bit off the ear anyway.

Can you use ivermectrin on a pregnant sow?
Yes you can but I would do it by absorption rather than orally.
